Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2781: Julia-Louis Dreyfus, Rolling Stone and Flirting - Body Language of Attraction (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Julia Louis Dreyfus appears on the 24 April 2014 edition of "Rolling Stone". Among other things, she is shown with a portion of the U.S. Constitution penned in a temporary tattoo on her back.

The very accomplished and hilarious comedian and actor made a bit of a splash because she appears nude - but also because a copy of John Hancock's signature is on the small of her back. Of course, Hancock did not sign the Constitution - rather he signed the Declaration of Independence.

The nonverbal cluster that Rolling Stone chose for their cover is a particularly provocative pose which projects an abundance of sexual energy. Few men can resist this highly flirtatious body language configuration - which sends strong signals. The classic cluster - which is mostly, yet not fully expressed here includes: looking backwards over a raised shoulder with the head tilted down - so that the eyes gaze upward with a partial sincere (Duchenne) eye smile (not shown here) and a partially suppressed mouth smile (mild mixed with false surprise here).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2357:
Why is this Image so Sexy?
Body Language of "Hide & Seek"

In this posed picture a beautiful woman is looking at "us" through the mane of a horse sculpture. Most people will find this to be a particularly sexy image. And while she is certainly attractive to begin with, several nonverbals increase her appeal. In particular, this partial view of her face somewhat emulates the peek-a-boo games we all played as children. This same behavior is ubiquitously carried over into teenage years and adulthood and is a routine component in the process of flirtation and romance. A slight shift in positioning by either party will "cover" her eyes - only to be "uncovered" once more with another small adjustment. A similar effect is also achieved with the brim of a hat, via hair hanging down in front of one or both eyes, etc.

During such flirtations, care should be taken not to look too long, where it becomes a stare. As long as eye contact is made and held for a second or two, then is broken and re-established for another brief moment the message usually gets through. During the second eye contact it is also very helpful to display a smile - either sincere one or a good "social smile".

Additional mysteriousness and thus allure is added in this photo because a good share of this beauty's face is covered by sculpture or by shadow. It is natural to want to know what we cannot see. This spurs our curiosity and her attractiveness.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2302:
Why Taller Women with Shorter Men Rarely Works Out -
Body Language of Height Disparity

When romance is "in the air", there are many factors which contribute to attraction. Anthropologist Boguslaw Pawlowski, Ph.D. has studied this phenomenon and when it comes to height, he's determined that there is a "magic ratio". This attraction ratio is 1 to 1.09 (female to male). Said another way, when the man is 9% taller than his female partner (or the woman is 91.7% of the man's height) attraction is optimal.

Moreover and more importantly, the longevity of relationships is influenced by this ratio. Statistically, marriages, partnerships and even dating endure longer the closer the couple resembles this height ratio. Certainly we can all think of exceptions to this nonverbal tendency - however it's some interesting body language to think about this Valentine's Day.

Body Language Analysis No. 1916: Katie Holmes & Tom Cruise are getting a Divorce - What Body Language Metric could have Predicted this - When They Were Dating?

When it comes to dating and romance are you aware that you your significant other's height statistically plays a key roll in whether it will just be a date or two - or if last as a couple
Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise are getting a divorce after a five year marriage.

Boguslaw Pawlowski, Ph.D., a Polish Anthropologist has noticed an interesting body language predictor of relationship longevity (it also predicts male-female & female-male attraction) - height ratio. When the man is 9% taller (1.09 times taller or the woman being 0.917 the height of the man) - Boguslaw found that this is the optimal ratio for longevity of a relationship. He found that the further a couple is from this height-proportion, the shorter the relationship tends to last. Like all statistics, this tendency describes large numbers of people (also disease behavior, sports stats, economics, etc.) and we can place too much emphasis when we look at small numbers or individual cases - but one can't help but wonder if this nonverbal quality had some influence on Katie and Tom - for she is 5'9" and he is 5'7" (a male to female ratio of only 0.97! - or said another way she is 3% taller than he, see below).

By the way - Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward (married for 50 years) ratio was exactly 1.09 and Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick (married 24 years) ratio is very close, 1.085!

Romance and Dating Secret # 203: Parallel Legs

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, actress, singer and wife of France's President Sarkozy, is shown here in a configuration known as "Parallel Legs". When sitting, 85% of men feel this is the most attractive posture a woman can assume. It is a pose often taught in modeling classes. The contour formed when the legs press against each accentuates muscle tone and thus gives a more youthful appearance.
