Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3607: Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, Dating Rumors and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

It was revealed on Thursday that Mika Brzezinski has managed to recently complete a divorce in a rather under-the-radar fashion. Her Morning Joe co-host, Joe Scarborough, went through a divorce three years earlier. It's also been rumored the two are dating.

Along these lines, there is a very obvious and classic nonverbal display exampled in the video segment above. And while it's not definitive for a clandestine relationship, it is strongly suggestive of it.

Duping delight is a nonverbal behavior wherein a sincere smile (aka a Duchenne smile) is displayed - yet partially suppressed (to a varying degree).  One way this occurs is via a partial hand covering. This is response to the joy some people feel when it is believed they have perpetrated a successful deception. What is seen here is a variation on this theme. Joe Scarborough smiles sincerely - but also partially during the following dialog:

Mika Brzezinski: "Can I get to the lead story now?"

Joe Scarborough: [over-talking] "By the way, there's, there's, there are a lot of lead stories today but why don't we start with the Trump lead story."

Mika: [over-talking]: "I will finish your sentence and start with politics."

The two hosts were fairly specifically poking fun at the rumors that they were dating. Mika did a better job at suppressing her smile than did Joe. If their relationship were only platonic, and they were simply exercising self-deprecating humor, there would be much less impetus to suppress a smile. The fact that Scarborough felt the need to bring a glass to his mouth - (a classic example of a MAP surrogate [Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier]) - in order to assist in the direct suppression of his smile, strongly suggests that the romantic rumors are true.

If there were nothing to drink and Scarborough instead put his hand to his mouth in an otherwise similar manner, what would you think such a gesture would indicate?

The act of putting a glass/cup to one's mouth and drinking will give the person camouflage, time and a direct mechanical interruption so that the smile/laugh cycle can be partially or completely broken. 

It's also a red flag that the "lead story" the two jokingly allude to - is their alleged love-relationship, rather than her divorce (for among other things, with regard to what the public KNOWS to be true - her divorce is fact, while their affair is still speculation). Moreover, Scarborough can't offer condolences to Brzezinski if he has been a catalyst or a cause for the break-up of her marriage.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3488: Donald Trump Brags about the size of penis - but His Body Language Indicates Anxiety/Deception (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

As if out of an episode of The Twilight Zone, last night during the U.S. Republican Presidential debate in Detroit - Donald Trump bragged about the size of his penis. This was in defense against an earlier implication not to his liking by Senator Marco Rubio.

"Look at those hands. Are they small hands? [pause, audience laughter] And, he referred to my hands, 'If they're small - something else must be small'. I guarantee you there's no problem. I guarantee it. All right."

During 0:09 - 0:10 as he says, "... tee you there's no problem ...", Trump adjusts his microphone. This is what is termed as a MAP surrogate (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier).

Most politicians are pretty good liars - Trump however is a very skilled liar. Upon studying his behavior in detail, one characteristic you'll notice is that, unlike most people he commits very little self-touching (most of these displays are considered MAPs) - even during blatant lies which can be very readily fact-checked. This is highly unusual. Either Trump has, over the years, become very good at not committing self-touching, or, telling lies doesn't bother his psyche. It's extremely common for a person to touch some place on their body during a lie.

The example highlighted here is somewhat of an exception. While the microphone is not part of his body (or clothes) - it acts as an extension - a surrogate. Examples of MAP surrogates include biting or cleaning eye glasses, fidgeting with a pen/pencil or smoking. The microphone needs no adjusting. This behavior is a manifestation of Trump's very significant anxiety.

Of course, it would be a difficult fact to cross-check Donald Trump's assertion. And while anxiety during a declarative statement is not 100% indicative of deception - at multiple times past, when Donald Trump has lied (fact-checked), he displays this same particular anxiety tell. Thus for him, this body language display is very correlative.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3384: Donald Trump Repeats Controversial 9/11 Claims - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Donald Trump is making several claims regarding the events of 9/11 and what he alleges he witnessed that day. One of his assertions is examined below.

Beginning at 0:15 in the above video, Trump says, "... I have a window in my apartment - that specifically was aimed at the World Trade Center because of the beauty of the whole downtown Manhattan. And I watched as people jumped and I watched the second plane come in."

During 0:27 - 0:28 Donald Trump adjusts the microphone stem.

Starting again at 0:38, Trump continues, "Many people jumped and I witnessed it. I watched that."

During 0:39 - 0:40 he again adjusts the microphone stem








As with most politicians, Donald Trump is a very skilled liar. One example of his nonverbal behavior which supports this - is that he rarely displays a self-touching tell, more specifically a MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) when he lies - yet here he commits a MAP surrogate. He adjusts the microphone in lieu of touching his face or another part of his body. The microphone of course DOES NOT need adjusting. Watch for this in the future - for it's one of Donald's Deception Displays.

Trump is either very good at suppressing these anxiety/deception tells - or more likely, he does not feel very much anxiety when he is lying.

Although this body language signal stands on its own (anxiety associated with a high likelihood of deception), it's interesting to also note what CNN's Sara Murray points out  - that Trumps apartment is about 4 miles from where the World Trade Center stood. Of course it's possible from that distance a person could watch the events through a telescope or binoculars - however if he had used his unaided eyes, it would have been impossible. This would have required visual acuity 5 times better than 20/20 - and no human being has ever come close to that level of vision. Moreover this would be only the acuity required to discriminate what would have be perceived as a tiny black spots. The vision required to differentiate a human being from the other debris at that distance would have to be much greater.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3191: Prince Charles and Sinn Féin Leader Gerry Adams Shake Hands - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier today Prince Charles shook hands and met with Gerry Adams. Adams is an Irish Republican Politician and President of Sinn Féin. He is the first member of the British Royal Family to meet with leadership of Sinn Féin while in the Republic of Ireland.

This image captures Prince Charles as he is approaching Mr. Adams. While it may very well have been tea time and the Prince may have desired some caffeine - here his hands should have absolutely not been holding anything. This moment was most certainly highly choreographed - however on the chance that Mr. Adams was standing in an unanticipated location, Prince Charles should have immediately handed the cup and saucer off - so that both hands were empty upon initiating any greeting or handshake. Holding any object in front of the chest or abdomen upon meeting another person is an example of a MAP surrogate (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) - and indicates a low degree of emotional comfort. The drink and its container act as an insulator/blocking agent from that which gives the Prince anxiety. Moreover it also telegraphs disrespect and a low priority nature to the meeting.

Gerry Adams is displaying body language known as a "Fig Leaf" or "Genital Guarding". In this context it is indicative of either lower emotional comfort - or respect shown to a recognized alpha by a self-acknowledged beta (e.g. a former U.S. president would also stand similarly next to a current president during a speech - or me, if I were also meeting Prince Charles). Thus on occasion (a small minority of the time) the fig leaf is an example deliberate, conscious etiquette behavior. What other nonverbal displayed here by Mr. Adam tells us which of these two is correct in this moment?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2808: Andrew Garfield, The Spider Man Theme Song and Anxiety - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Andrew Garfield was recently on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon" plugging his recent film, "The Amazing Spider Man 2". Jimmy surprised Andrew with a guitar and then asked him to play a song. Emma Stone's boyfriend responded with a pretty fair rendition of the Spider Man Theme.

There are several nonverbal anxiety tells in this short video displayed by the 30 year-old actor. Very early (during 0:05 - 0:07, Note: Unfortunately, since the original writing of this post, the source video has since been deleted from YouTube) - Garfield picked a piece of lint off his shirt and discarded it (preening) while Fallon looks on. In this scenario, this MAP/MAP surrogate nonverbal (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) is highly indicative of anxiety (In other situations clustered with nonverbals - it can have a completely different meaning).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2521: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jimmy Kimmel and the Tie Stroke Mumford and Sons, Groupie Behavior and Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Jake Gyllenhaal was recently on Jimmy Kimmel to promote his recent movie, "Prisoners". During the interview he spoke about his recent travels with English folk-rock band "Mumford and Sons" around the Southwest United States on a train as they toured.

Gyllenhaal shows us a common MAP-surrogate (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) known as a "Tie Stroke" at the beginning of this video. A tie stroke is a form of substituted self-touching where the long portion of the tie is lifted, adjusted and/or caressed during moments of heightened anxiety - rather than touching a body part.

Kimmel: "I think it was about a year and a half ago, you were with, you ah, went to see 'Mumford and Sons' the band."
Gyllenhaal: "Yes."
Kimmel: "And, a, a, you wound up going on tour with the band, True?"
Gyllenhaal: "Yes. True."
Kimmel: "How did that occur... and why?"
Gyllenhaal: "[a two second "Tie Stroke" begins, 0:17 - 0:19] Ah, Well, I cou, I count ah luckily in, in, ah this blessed life that I feel like I live, I count ‘Mumford and sons’ as, as a close friends I, I, I, I have a lot of friends from England. I’m not really sure why that happened but it did. And ah, and ah, they ah, I happened to meet them years ago before …."

Gyllenhaal feels anxiety that his groupie-like behavior is being discussed in such a public forum.

His multiple examples of stuttering are further (paralanguage) and congruent examples of his nervousness in discussing this subject.

There are multiple other body language tells of anxiety in the few seconds surrounding this moment. Did you see them all?

The tie stroke is usually downwardly vectored. The false tie-knot adjust (see below for this another similar signals) is a more obvious nonverbal consistent with even higher levels of anxiety.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2401: Toronto Mayor Rob Ford Denies Crack Cocaine Allegations Is He Telling the Truth? His Body Language says ....

Although it has not yet surfaced yet, a phone video of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford allegedly smoking crack cocaine exists. Staff of the Toronto Star has purportedly viewed it and feel it is authentic. The person possessing the video reportedly wants tens of thousands of dollars in exchange for the video.

The video above shows Mayor Rob Ford denying the allegations. Regardless of whatever words the "script" or "memo" he is holding contains, no innocent man needs a script to declare his innocence. Deception needs to memorize. Truth speaks from the heart. From a nonverbal standpoint, his memo serves much the same function as a young child's blanket. It is a MAP surrogate (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) and is a strong signal of high anxiety in this context. MAP surrogates are slightly more refined forms of self-touching.

His body language also betrays the lie as evidenced by the Mayor's relative lack of eye contact. Both in extended looking at his memo and prolonged looking down at noise on the floor provide subconscious excuses for looking away - and down - from his audience. We don't need to see the video. Rob Ford is guilty of smoking crack cocaine.

What other nonverbal signals demonstrate Mr. Ford is lying? Asking for forgiveness? Frightened?
