Body Language Analysis No. 4368: Donald's and Melania's Kiss in Iraq - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Donald Trump and Melania visited the Al Asad Air Base in Iraq on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2018. It was the President's first visit to a military base in a war zone. While there, the President and First Lady shared a rare public kiss. What follows is a nonverbal analysis of that kiss as captured in the accompanying photograph (and the cropped close-up below).

Most children can probably tell you that Donald's and Melania's kiss-embrace does not look to be at all affectionate.

Note how Donald Trump is leaning quite far into the kiss. He is leaning forward 20º - 25º, while Melania is leaning in only about 5º.

Whenever affection is lacking or diminished - and one still feels socially obligated to kiss or hug another person - one or both people will virtually always lean forward. The President is a fair amount taller than his wife (His true height is about 6' 0.5" [add another 1" with his shoes], while Melania's actual height is about 5' 6" [and with about 2.5 inches more in her boot heels]). Thus, although both can lean-into a kiss, with all other factors being equal (which may or may not be), the taller person typically leans further into a kiss or hug.

Notice too, the angle of their heads and necks - each of their heads are tilted backward, away from each other. Moreover, affectionate embraces will have very frequently exhibit contact of the forehead, temple, and/or region around the eye with these same regions on the other person's face/head.

You may have also noticed that Donald Trump's torso is twisted a bit toward the audience. While Melania's torso and stomach are pointed directly at her husband, his are rotated to his left. Full body pointing is a signal of affection and/or respect - while not doing so indicates a lack of thereof.

Full body pointing (eyes, face, chest, stomach, pelvis, etc.), of course, also includes the feet. And, while we can't see them directly (and therefore, cannot discern where they're pointed), we can infer with fairly high accuracy, that her feet are directly beneath her center of mass - while his left foot is considerably further back compared with his body.

Leaning into a hug or kiss allows the lower body to be further away from the other person - insulating them from intimacy. In such pseudo displays of affection - the further two people's feet are from their hugger, the less affection is present.

Note that Donald's and Melania's pelvic regions and chests are far apart. Holding each other's upper arms, as they each are doing, ensures such body distancing.

It's interesting to notice that both of their hands are not relaxed. His grip appears to be relatively tight - and this is, in part, due to his center-of-mass being considerably forward (he's a bit off-balance). Sometimes gripping another person's arm in the midst of a hug or kiss is not at all affectionate and can be even a signal the presence of objectifying and/or narcissistic personality traits. There is not enough information in this one image to draw those conclusions, however.

The First Lady's fingers and thumb are all quite widely splayed. This finger position signals a high adrenaline state - and while, kissing on camera with all the world watching (albeit, tape-delayed) is not the perfect environment for intimacy, the First Lady's fingers are not what we would, at all, expect to see amidst even a mild affection display. Her fingers betray her anxiety.

Thus, while his hand-fingers are contracted - hers are widely extended and splayed. Neither of their hands are relaxed - but configured oppositely. Fascinatingly, when one's hands are tense, the face - particularly the mouth - is almost always tense too.

Kissing styles (whether a peck, a longer lips-only kiss, a French kiss, etc.), vary from person to person, but it's also quite true that, like the leaning-in of the body, the further the lips protrude forward, the less affection exists.

Another obvious (nay, glaring) characteristic of this kiss's lack of affection is Melania's turned cheek. This kiss is not even a lip peck. Between spouses, this simply screams. This nonverbal signal is so overt and ingrained in our culture that this dynamic is a millennia-old metaphor for dissing, distancing, disrespect - signaling an absence of affection.

The President's eyes (eyelids) appear to be slightly open - his lower eyelids are relaxed which strongly suggests such lack of closure. Melania's right eye may also be a bit open, although given her head rotation, this is impossible to tell. When affection is present, there is a strong tendency toward eyelid closure - although, in such public settings, many will also keep their peepers partially open.

SUMMARY: Donald Trump's and Melania's recent kiss-embrace in Iraq is profoundly lacking in affection. And although very few us will ever kiss with the world watching, this display was light-years away from what one would expect of loving and affectionate spouses.

Body Language Analysis No. 4287: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle - Why Do We Kiss with Our Eyes' Closed (most of the time) - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

You may be surprise to know that a healthy person's sensory input is 90% visual. The remaining 10% is essentially "shared" by the other four senses - touch, taste, hearing, and smell. Moreover - 40% of the mass of the human brain is dedicated to vision.

When we close our eyes, a momentary slight re-adjustment of neurologic activity and blood flow occurs - with a bit less in the visual areas of the brain - and a little more in the other regions. This subtle blood flow dynamic brings with it a significant relative shift in oxygen, nutrients, and further increased neurological activity to the remaining 60% of the brain. It follows then, that the other four senses experience an up-regulation of sensitivity. Think about this phenomenon for a moment. We close our eyes when we taste chocolate cake - when we smell a flower - when we are straining to listen to a faint sound. And when in dim light - our tactile sensitivity immediately increase.

But not only do these other four senses become more perceptive - our cognitive focus also increases - and our emotions become more intense.

When sincere affection is present, the vast majority of the time, when we kiss or hug another person (or even when we kiss or hug an animal) - we close our eyes.

SUMMARY: Closing our eyes temporarily amplifies our other senses, our cognition - and in the case of a kiss or hug, our feelings. This facilitates us to more fully drink-in every ounce of emotion - and be entirely in the moment. Thus, closing one's eyes in these scenarios facilitates a natural form of positive biofeedback.

Congratulations to Meghan and Harry - may you have many years of joy, health, and love.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3414: Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Affection - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Jennifer Lawrence was recently a guest on Watch What Happens Live. When Andy Cohen asked her whether she kissed Liam Hemsworth off-camera, we repeatedly see her look down to her right as well as tilting her head while looking down to her right.

Cohen: It has recently been rumored that you and Liam Hemsworth had some PDA at the Waverly Inn. Have you two ever kissed when the cameras weren't rolling?

Lawrence: Liam and I grew up together. Liam's real hot.

Cohen: I, I agree.

Lawrence:  What would you have done? [Laughing]

Cohen: [overtalking] I would guess.

Lawrence: [continues laughing]

Cohen: I would say yes.

Lawrence: Yeah.

Cohen: Very good.

Lawrence [inaudible]

Cohen: Very good. Ahhhh, I mean, I'd pick Gale over Peeta any day.

Lawrence: I did.

Cohen: Yes, Okay.

Lawrence: [overtaking, laughing] I did at one point.

It's extremely common for a person to look down to their right when they're feeling strong emotions of love, affection, grief, empathy and post-fiero states. Kinesthetic thought-feelings of high intensity (re-living a memory with a significant physical component) also are associated with this same type of eye movement. While by no means a 100% type-phenomena, in this specific example of eye/head/neck movement, it very strongly suggests Jennifer Lawrence had and continues to have sincere affection for Liam Hemsworth.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2885: 15-year-old American citizen Tariq Khdeir is Beaten - His Reunion with His Mother - Body Language Tells (PHOTOS)

Recently a 15-year-old American citizen, Tariq Khdeir, was allegedly beaten by Israeli law enforcement. The U.S. State Department stated that it was "profoundly troubled by reports that he was severely beaten while in police custody and strongly condemn any excessive use of force", and called for "a speedy, transparent and credible investigation and full accountability for any excessive use of force".

The photo above shows captures a moment shortly after Tariq's reunion with his mother. Two nonverbal signals here are particularly important when evaluating for sincere affection. If true affection is felt for another - head touching - especially when it involves either person's eye or forehead - is indicative of a high level of affection. Many animals display identical behavior. It is in fact, significantly more correlative with affection than a kiss on or near the mouth.

Note also that Tariq's mother's eyes are closed. Forty percent of the mass of the human brain and ninety percent of our sensory input is dedicated to the visual system. When we close our eyes a bit more blood flow and a little more neuro-chemical activity is directed toward the other sixty percent of the brain - including of course the other four senses as well as the brain's cognitive and emotional centers. Thus when we close our eyes during an embrace or a kiss - our psyches are trying to drink in and capture every last drop of affection from the moment.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2779: Rep. Vance McAllister Caught on Camera Kissing Staffer - Affection vs. Lust - What their Body Language says (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

U.S. House of Representative, Vance McAllister was recently caught in an embarrassing a potentially career-ending scenario when a video of him embracing and kissing one of his staffers was leaked (Melissa Anne Hixon Peacock). The Louisiana Congressman is not a stranger to controversy as he drew fire earlier this year when he personally invited Willie Robertson (Phil's son) of Duck Dynasty fame to attend the 2014 State of the Union Address. Representative McAllister's office has issued a statement of apology - however to date, no apology has been given by the congressman publicly.

It is impossible to discern any amount of sincerity via a letter drafted on McAllister's (or anyone's) behalf. Apologies, if they are sincere and if they are to be believed must be given directly - in front of a live audience. Apologies must also never be read from a script. Never. This is true whether one is seeking damage control, apologizing from the heart and/or looking for forgiveness.

Note how the positions of the lower half of Peacock's and McAllister's bodies are oriented at ninety degrees. What's more is the Congressman's right foot is pointed away from Peacock. We point our feet, abdomen, torso, face and eyes towards those we love, have affection for and/or respect. This is particularly true when kissing such a person. And while one hip of each is touching, their other hips' are rotated out at right angles.

This was a kiss and an embrace of lust - and has a very low affection quotient.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2722: Charles Hamelin & Marianne St-Gelias's Kiss after his Gold Medal - A Paramount Body Language Signal of Affection (PHOTO, VIDEO)

Canadian Short Track Speed Skater Charles Hamelin is seen here kissing his girlfriend and fellow skater, Marianne St-Gelais at the Sochi Winter Olympics. Hamelin has just won a Gold Medal in the 1500 Meter. While their bodies are certainly not in the optimum position for kissing or most displays of affection, one nonverbal in particular is very telling.

Forty percent of the mass of the brain is dedicated to the visual system and ninety percent of all sensory input is dedicated to sight. Hearing, touch, taste and smell - collectively account for only ten percent of incoming sensory data. When the eyes are shut, a slight redistribution of blood flow and electro-chemical activity of the brain is redirected to these other four (non-visual) senses - as well as cognitive and EMOTIONAL centers of the brain. We close our eyes during kissing, hugging and other affectionate displays because we want to drink in every last drop of emotion. As feeling creatures this is a natural and normal process when the emotion is SINCERE (most mammals do so as well). When there is a lack of sincerity - the eyes remain open - for there is no desire to amplify the sensory or emotional experience (ergo a relative state of apathy). The opposite is happening here however. In this moment Hamelin and St-Gelais are human beings in love first .... and Olympians second.

Body Language Analysis No. 2678: French President François Hollande, Valerie Trierweiler and Julie Gayet - Of Affairs, Affection and Nonverbal Tells (PHOTOS)

It has been recently reported that French President François Hollande is having an affair with actress Julie Gayet. Hollande's longtime partner Valerie Trierweiler has been hospitalized - which some have attributed to stress associated with this news.

In this image, Trierweiler is kissing Hollande - yet he is not reciprocating.
How many signals of affection disparity do you see here?

The most obvious one is the lack of lip pucker consistent with a kiss of mutual affection. Perhaps François Hollande's lips are just caught off guard? Hmmm.

What about the lack of Hollande's head or neck tilt? Valerie Trierweiler's head is tilted and rotated toward her partner. However the French President's head is straight up and only slightly turned. Tilting of head and necks in the midst of a kiss are affection amplifiers. Moreover Valerie's entire body is leaning into the kiss. In distinction François is not leaning toward his partner.

Another very important nonverbal sign of lack of affection are Hollande's open eyes. A kiss that is being anywhere near fully experienced requires eyelid closure.

French President François Hollande is not engaged in this kiss. His body language is not affectionate nor is it sincere. His mind is elsewhere. And so is his heart.

Here, Julie Gayet is pictured with Hollande in late 2011. What body language signs do you see here?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2649: How a Kiss can Change the World - Body Language of Affection (PHOTO)

This is an incredible photo examples an incredible scenario of human emotion and the body language which accompanies it. The woman is protesting a high-speed train line in Susa, Italy. She is lifting the face-shield of a police officer to kiss him as a peace offering. Note that both of their eyes are closed. At moments of high affection (such as a kiss) and other affectionate, close head-touching scenarios (e.g. sincere hugs), the eyes will close. The emotional brain wants to drink in" and experience every little bit of the emotion of the moment - and such emotion is heightened by eyelid closure. Forty percent of the mass of the brain is visual. Ninety percent of all sensory input is also visual. Thus when the eyelids are closed there is a transient and subtle blood flow and neurochemical downshift in the visual portions of the central nervous system, while the other senses (taste, touch, smell and hearing) grow temporarily more sensitive - and the cognitive and emotional centers of the brain will also up-regulate. This is natural when tasting a chocolate desert, or often when a singer performs, during intense concentration, at the height of sexual orgasm, etc.

Perhaps the police officer and the woman knew each other prior to the protest. Perhaps not. We do not know his specific orders either. While this would seem to be contrary to law enforcement protocol, it seems she has, by her affectionate display, changed his World-view.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2108:
Rihanna's and Chris Brown's Kiss and Hug
What are they REALLY feeling?

At the 0:04 mark in the above video, Rihanna and Chris Brown can be seen hugging at the MTV Video Music Awards. This was the first public display of affection since Chris Brown plead guilty to one count of felony-assault for beating Rihanna in 2009. Careful attention to their hug gives us a glimpse into their emotions towards each other.

The video is low resolution so we cannot see if Rihanna's eyes close. When eyes close during a hug it is a strong body language signal of affection. We cannot see Brown's eyes as well, since we only have this one angle. This particular affection-display can also of course be seen in platonic relationships, between siblings as well as between parents and children (adult or children/infant).

Notice that Chris "leans into the hug". The further the lean, the less body contact there is and the less affection is being felt. The less leaning the more contact - and thus more affection. Notice the considerably greater body "leaning-in" during Rihanna's next hug.

Chris Brown also hugs his former lover with only one arm - again a signal of less affection. This is in strong distinction to Rihanna - who reciprocates with two arms - a nonverbal sign of a relatively higher level of affection. Rihanna also clearly has both of the palms of her hands touching Chris - a signal of true and sincere affection. Lack of palmar touch is a beacon of low affection. Notice also there is no patting of Rihanna's hands during the hug. Patting of one's hands during a hug is a common non-affectionate body language display - or that the hug has gone on "long enough" and it's time for it to end.

Chris Brown's also head tilts away from Rihanna during the hug, while her's does not exhibit this distancing phenomenon.

In conclusion, while they did kiss (polite peck), Rihanna feels considerably more affection towards Chris Brown than he feels towards her.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 1855:
Sincere Kisses & Closed Eyes

In this image Gunner's Mate, Steven Joyce kisses the hand of his wife (Damara) just prior to his ship, the USS Carr, is deployed to the Persian Gulf. During hugs and kissing, if there is true and focused affection present, the eyes naturally close. Both Steve and Damara are displaying strong body language of sincerity with their eyes closed. Ninety percent of our sensory input is visual - and forty percent of the mass of the human brain is dedicated to vision. When we close our eyes, we don't need as much blood, oxygen, neural processing, etc. - to the visual portions of our brains - and thus we can dedicate a bit more of these limited resources to the other four senses (taste, smell, touch and hearing) as well as the cognitive and the emotional centers of our brains. It's as if were trying to temporarily amplify the emotions and squeeze every bit of feeling from these special moments. When we (naturally) close our eyes - we can drink in more emotion.
