Body Language Analysis No. 3399 (REPOSTING): Donald Trump, a Bald Eagle, and Fear - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The latest Donald Trump video is obviously not to his liking - and understandably so. Although far from Daniel Day-Lewis, the businessman-turned-politician normally has a somewhat better control of his facial expressions compared with most candidates. This video, however, shows us a very candid exception.

In August 2015, when the Republican was posing with a bald eagle (named "Uncle Sam") for a Time magazine cover, Trump demonstrated several key, but non-flattering nonverbal faux pas.

In this split second, we can see Trump invading the personal (intimate) space of Uncle Sam. Yet the raptor, it seems, is much quicker than the republican.




Animals, of course, are no different than people when it comes to proxemic principles - if they don't know you well AND if you don't share a good rapport - they will NOT welcome you into their intimate space.

This morning during a phone interview on "Fox & Friends", Steve Doocy asked Mr. Trump, "Were you a little frightened by that bird?". Trump replied, "No, not really."

Note the expression on Mr. Trump - particularly his mouth. His sudden, tightening and lateral vectoring (with down-turned corners) of his mouth is a classic "mouth of fear".

A split second later we see Trump's "fear mouth" become even more extreme.










Body Language take-home points:

1. Only enter the personal/intimate space of another if:

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3524: Paddleboarder's Encounter with Spinner Shark - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

As luck and the internet would have it, this new viral video stands in dramatic contrast to yesterday's post where the fictional great white shark of Jaws required acting fearful - and it fell short. In this video, we see Maximo Trinidad paddleboarding off the coast of Jupiter, Florida where he had a close encounter with a (real) spinner shark.

During 0:16 we see Mr. Trinidad's eyes (eyelids) opened very widely, his central forehead contracted and elevated along with his inner (medial) eyebrows.

In this close up image of the same moment, Maximo's mid-face is tensed with dramatic nasal flaring and the corners of his mouth pulled out (laterally) and slightly downward.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3356: Anna Faris and Chris Pratt are Dressing their Son Up as a Dinosaur for Halloween - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Anna Faris was recently a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live. During her appearance she spoke with significant trepidation regarding her son's costume for Halloween. The three year-old got to pick his costume this year and he chose a T-Rex. This of course is not surprising for most young boys except for one thing. Faris' husband and the boy's father is Chris Pratt - who was the male lead in the recent Jurassic World film. Faris fears some may see her son's costume as her and her husband's attempt at using their child's trick-or-treat experience as a marketing ploy.

Deep inhalation (with hissing) in conjunction with a mouth of fear and neck of fear

This is indicative of lower levels of fear and social fear rather than true physical fear. People who display this combination of nonverbal signals tend to have significantly higher empathy quotients.

R2E2 or the Rationalization Rapport Empathy Expression

Commonly displayed when a person is trying to win another person to their way of thinking - and attempting to get others to  co-rationalize and see their point-of-view.

Bilateral Hair Adjust with fear mouth. This is a truncated variation of the Hair Adjust Behind Ears. In this shortened version, Faris' fingers do not extend to the back of her ears. Her psyche is attempting to be more assertive - yet (together with another fear display of the face - primarily her mouth), Anna Faris's is not feeling very confident about the ramifications of her son's costume choice.  Intriguingly, when (in other scenarios) the fingers move the hair around to the backs of the ear(s) - the remainder of the facial expression and body language signals - and the emotional mind are all much more confident.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3330: Vladimir Putin on 60 Minutes - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last Sunday Charlie Rose's interview of Vladimir Putin was shown on 60 Minutes. It was conducted a few days earlier near Moscow - and just prior to Mr. Putin's United Nations speech and  his meeting with President Obama.

In the beginning of this video excerpt Charlie Rose says, "So you would like to join the United States in the fight against ISIS - that's part of why you're there [loose forward lip purse at 0:14]. Others think [microexpresssion of fear at 0:16] that while that may be part of your goal, you're trying to save the Assad Administration because they've been losing, ah, ground - and the War has not been going well for them - and you're there to rescue them."

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of Mr. Putin.

During 0:14 (above image) we see a "Loose Forward Lip Purse" exhibited by President Putin (versus a tight forward lip purse or a lateral lip purse). A forward lip purse is an indication of clandestine disagreement or clandestine plans. It's a nonverbal display only made by a relative alpha person/scenario in the midst of communication with a perceived beta personality/situation. In addition, those who configure their lips in this fashion believe they have a good chance of both executing and subsequent success of their plans (thus it speaks to their confidence).

When you see a loose forward lip purse you should know that although the person making this expression may be voicing a small disagreement (or none) - their true disagreement is much larger. Alternatively, their true plans are very disparate from those they disclose to you.

Two seconds later, captured below (during 0:16) we see Vladimir Putin displaying a microexpression of fear (specifically a mouth of fear and neck of fear). Juxtaposed so closely after the loose forward lip purse, this nonverbal tells us that - despite his relative confidence in his plan, it still has at least one component for which Mr. Putin feels significant trepidation.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3282: Zac Efron Swam with a Wild Tiger Shark and Avoided an Attack by using Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Zac Efron was a guest on the Tonight Show last night. Many people have gained a considerably higher level of respect for the actor after his encounter with a tiger shark in the wild. Not only did he keep his cool and follow the recommendations of shark experts - but he also held onto the shark's dorsal fin and hitched a ride back to his boat.

From a body language perspective, as with many interactions, this interview includes a multitude of nonverbal displays - some of which are alpha, some beta and some hybrids. A few of these are described below. Intriguingly (and courageously), Mr. Efron also uses body language to avoid a shark attack.

Mr. Efron displays a "false tie-adjust"

This common nonverbal display is indicative of anxiety. Even though he's an accomplished actor and is quite used to being in front of a camera - here he's NOT method acting - he's human and he's just being Zac. Efron does this again at 0:50 as well as at the 2:12 mark.

Here we see the palms partially turned down at about a 45 degree angle. This is one of many  ALPHA-beta hybrids (here with the alpha being greater than beta).

This more complete palm down gesture is significant of a higher dominance level.

Had his fingers been positioned tightly together (here there is space between them) and his arm been extended - this would have conveyed an even greater alpha level. His partial (suppressed) sincere smile also helps to make this a bit less dominant.

This palm-down gesture is more dominant than that displayed above (at 1:00) - for Efron's arm is held further away from his body with his elbow more extended. He also does not have a smile at this moment in addition to having a contracted forehead. However his fingers remain separated - thus leaving some dominance unclaimed.

Although we can't see this MAP fully (manipulator, adaptor, pacifier), if you watch the video, you can tell Efron adjusts the lower part of his tie. This is a common gesture for men in moments where they are attempting to up-regulate their alpha emotions. This body language is better appreciated in the dynamic context of the video rather than a static image.

2:42

Zac Efron displays a conventional low steeple. The conventional steeple is a considerably high-alpha display and is only recommended for very brief duration (he uses it for about 5 seconds here) during very selective moments (photos of U.S. Presidents using a conventional steeple are exceedingly rare).

When a guy is describing how he survived a stare-down with a 14 foot tiger shark, he's certainly has greater social-latitude to use this nonverbal swagger.

I don't pretend to be a shark expert and thus I can't at this time can't validate Efron's advice, yet here (based on the teachings of his mentors) he describes how he used his clear wits and body language to avoid a possibly fatal shark attack.

"What you're supposed to do is slow down your heart rate and just sort stay calm."

"I held my breath, I sorta crossed my arms and let the shark know I wasn't prey."

Efron describes staring directly into the eyes of the shark - implying that his body was turned toward the shark as well (e.g., "I'm not afraid of you and I'm not swimming away - but my hands are not in an aggressive configuration either, so this is a truce Mr. Tiger Shark, okay?").

Just as Jimmy Fallon holds up a picture of Zac with the Tiger Shark - he displays a subtle fear mouth (in a moment of partially reliving the encounter). The camera cuts away before his trepidation is perhaps more fully expressed.

Don't try this at home.

Many shark experts would say that once Efron avoided the initial face-to-face encounter, he should have not touched the shark - as tiger sharks are particularly unpredictable.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3255: Donald Trump and a Body Language Signal of Social Fear and Hesitancy (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Donald Trump was interviewed by Anderson Cooper yesterday. In this segment he continues to press the republican candidate regarding the idea of asking God for forgiveness. At 0:47 the reporter rephrases his question, "But the idea of asking for forgiveness, that's not a - is that a central tenet for you?"

Before Mr. Cooper had finish asking his question, Mr. Trump displayed a classic nonverbal facial cluster. He pulls the corners of his mouth out (laterally) and downward. Simultaneous he juts his jaw out quite far as he audibly inhales with a hissing sound. This lasts for about 2 seconds. During the beginning of this expression cycle, Trump also displays a prolonged blink with mid-facial tension.

This evanescent cluster of facial changes is indicative of social-fear and hesitancy. It's not an expression of physical danger fear - but the type of trepidation where a person feels they must tread delicately for fear they will suffer significant social repercussions.

There were a multitude of other body language signals displayed during this interview. This was just one moment - yet a very telling one. Trump shows us an Achilles' heel. He reveals his vulnerability to the subject of religion - and more specifically his feelings regarding God. He also fears this weakness will cost him the republican nomination. His opponents should seize on this moment and hit him hard here.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3253: John Kasich Formally Announces His Candidacy for President - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Today Ohio Governor John Kasich announced his candidacy for President. He is the 16th major Republican to make a bid for his party's nomination. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of his speech.

At multiple times Governor Kasich put a hand in his pocket. This is an awful body language for any leader to use - particularly while on camera and speaking - and especially during his announcement to run for the highest office in the land. It does not build rapport. On the contrary - it signals reluctance, tentativeness and nondisclosure. Some people will occasionally use this MAP (manipulator, adaptor, pacifier) in an effort to look relaxed or approachable - yet it does not - rather it projects non-engagement.

Simply put - hands in pockets will lose you votes and rapport. If you're running for office or leading people, keep your hands OUT of your pockets. Mitt Romney did this far too much in 2012 - thus sending signals he was not emotionally comfortable.

This gesture (in body language terminology - one type of "illustrator") is a "basketball steeple". And although the tempo of movement associated with Kasich's use of this nonverbal is a bit too quick (see video at 39:00) - the basketball steeple is a great example of an "Alpha-Beta Hybrid" - not too aggressive/dominant - yet not too demure/sedate. Alpha-beta hybrid body language (which can be up and down-regulated in the moment depending on the need and/or feedback) are fantastic body language displays for leaders to use - for they build rapport and assertiveness without arrogance - as well as increase likability without sending signals of weakness. The basketball steeple is but one of many varieties of an alpha-beta hybrid.

This image captured at 40:34 shows Gov. Kasich with his fingers interlocked (intertwined). This MAP indicates low emotional comfort and anxiety - and should in general not be used. However, Kasich used this fairly display relatively briefly (several 1- 3 second intervals) and while he was speaking about the almost unfathomable condition of family fighting against family in the U.S. Civil War. If one truly has empathy for those in War - this gesture is sincere - for it was congruent with his vocal qualities as well as his words (but still should never be used for very long).

This chin, mouth and mid-face cluster is indicative of brief (near-microexpression) fear-sadness as Kasich describes a man who watched helplessly as his wife and two children were swept away in a flash flood several days ago. This was another sincere moment of empathy.

Just after Governor Kasich announces his attention to run for President he looks down with his head/neck and while closing his eyes. A few moments prior, he stepped back several inches and braced himself by grabbing the sides of the podium (lectern). Such humbled body language (and similar) is common and displayed by most candidates in the context of announcing their candidacy - particularly for high office. Of course eye contact with the audience and upright posture are essential for good rapport and the projection of strength, confidence and assertiveness - yet most of us want (and need) our leaders (during certain moments at least) to be humble. Like most body language however, a balance is needed. Too much humility (weakness) or too much confidence (thus arrogance) does not win elections.

Although he could certainly make some significant improvements, more than the majority of candidates - John Kasich projected a good balance of alpha and beta qualities during his formal announcement speech. Both his sincerity and empathy were relatively high during this event - and it's these qualities more than most which translate to likability.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3198: Sepp Blatter, FIFA, Subtle Fear & Body Language (PHOTOS)

Sepp Blatter defeated Jordan's Prince Ali bin al-Hussein and was re-elected today as president of FIFA. This will be his fifth term and comes amid great scandal. Although he was not arrested with other high-level FIFA officials earlier this week on charges of bribery, wire fraud, money laundering and racketeering - some have speculated that before the dust settles - Sepp will join them.

Many misidentify this facial expression. In this moment Blatter is feeling fear. It is mild, even somewhat subtle - yet fear it is. Very often one emotion is mixed-in with another, two or even more - what other(s) is the FIFA President feeling in this photo?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3159: "When a Silverback attacks" - Gorillas, Cross-species Body Language, False Distancing, Fear and Surprise (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Although gorillas and other primates (and virtually all mammals, birds, and the majority of phyla) vocalize, they rely heavily on their nonverbal behavior for communication. This short video acts as a reminder of both the ubiquity of body language - and how a lack of this understanding can back-fire. We also see some great examples of human facial expressions here - and can even draw some analog behavior with distracted driving.

0:05 - In the reflection in the glass we can see a young girl (perhaps five years old) beating her chest. Of course, we cannot blame her - she's mirroring others behavior standing next to her or perhaps she's recalling numerous animated examples.

When a gorilla beats on its chest this is a threat display. The alpha male gorilla, thinking his authority has been challenged, begins to charge.

Notice how his head and thus his eyes are turned to side - this non-direct eye contact demonstrates a less than full-fledged attack (e.g., had the glass not been there and these people were instead gorillas, this action was not intended to be lethal - yet an aggressive warning).

At last split-second, the gorilla turns his head and leaps at the glass with his fists and his full momentum - cracking it.

For a few milliseconds, the gorilla's dark body acts as a mirror-backing to enhance the reflective effect of the glass. This enables us to see the videographer (man in red shirt holding his camera-phone) and a woman to his left (our right). Though it is of low resolution, we can see he has a relatively neutral expression on his face. The act of recording an event on camera often acts as an insulating effect - taking the person filming it out of the immediate mental-emotional setting (often at their peril). In marked distinction, the woman on the right side of this image (pink shirt) has a moderate "mouth of fear". Why this emotional disparity? Her expression (and his lack of one) is not that he has more courage or she quicker reflexes - she is simply more fully present because she's not recording the event - she's engaged in the present moment. The man in the red shirt is not fully engaged. This same delayed-response and mental-emotional insulation (false-distancing) phenomenon occurs when we are texting or speaking on the phone when driving.
