Body Language Analysis No. 4361: Donald Trump "Jokes" about leaving office - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Thursday 15 November 2018, President Trump gave a speech at The White House conference on Supporting Veterans and Military Families. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of a crucial portion of this speech.

After about ten minutes of listing claimed accomplishments of his administration, Donald Trump said (continuing at 11:05), "... So, in addition to everything else, as you see, I did thee [sic] promotion of military spouse hiring across the federal government. (He then goes off script at 11:15) Fact is I've done a lot! I could s-, I could s- ¶ Good-bye everybody. Goodbye everybody Ω ∆ . That's a lot! ∆ . That IS a lot. That's more than anybody's ever even thought about - and I'm proud of it. And we're not finished yet. That's why § I figured I did so much I could leave now ∆  (Then the President goes back on script).

Just after he says, "... I could s-, I could s- ..." and as he's stepping away from the lectern, just as he starts to say "... Good-by everybody...", Donald Trump waves with his right hand/arm (during 11:19 and notated by the ¶ symbol).

He then immediately displays a single palm-down sweep, wave-off after his reiteration, "... Goodbye everybody...".

This nonverbal dynamic is indicative of feigned dismissal - a signal of a passive-aggressive emotional tone (during 11:21 and notated by the Ω symbol).

The President then immediately displays - what in nonverbal parlance is known as a Jaw Confessional (during 11:24 and notated by the ∆ symbol). A jaw confessional is a fast and short-lived lateral thrusting of the jaw. (The jaw [mandible] may be moved toward either one's right or left. Trump has a bias to displace his jaw to HIS left). A jaw confessional indicates what is about to be said (and less commonly, what was just spoken) is a source of some embarrassment and/or shame - ergo, it's a type of confession - and thus, importantly, has an element of truth.

He displays additional Jaw Confessional signal just before he says, "... That IS a lot..." (∆ during 11:27 - 11:28)

And another jaw confessional just after he says, "That's why I figured I did so much I could leave now ..." (11:37 ∆).

Note also during 11:35 (notated above by the § symbol, as he says, "why" ["That's why I figured I did so much I could leave now"]), President Trump shrugs both shoulders. Shrugging (which may be performed with shoulders, hands, thumbs, eyebrows, forehead, knees, feet, etc.) indicates the thought-emotions of:

• I don't know
• I don't care
• What does it matter?
• What could I do?

The President is rationalizing out loud. This is a glimpse at the man behind the curtain (albeit a rather thin one). As this nonverbal signal is not able to be captured in a still image, please watch the video to see this dynamic. 

SUMMARY:  When Donald Trump goes off script, he's very often confessing, projecting, and/or lying.

Moreover, careful observers will note - there's an element of truth in every joke - and in this example, it's substantial.

Donald Trump's verbal, paralanguage, and nonverbal behavior during this portion of his speech on Thursday 15 November 2018, indicates that he is considering resigning the office of the Presidency of the United States.

Body Language Analysis No. 4296: Sarah Huckabee Sanders Chokes Up - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence

On Wednesday 30 May, during a White House Press Briefing, Sarah Huckabee Sanders choked up in response to a question from a 13-year-old boy (Benjamin Choucroun). What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of this exchange.

BENJAMIN CHOUCROUN (beginning at 13:02): At my school, we recently had a lockdown drill. One thing that affects mine and other students’ mental health is the worry about the fact that we or our friends could get shot at school. Specifically, can you tell me what the administration has done and will do to prevent these senseless tragedies?

SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS: I think that ahhh - as a kid, and certainly as a parent, there is nothing that could be more terrifying for a kid to go to school and not feel safe. So I’m sorry that you feel that way. This administration takes it seriously, and the School Safety Commission that the President convened is meeting this week, again, an official meeting, ah, to discuss the best ways forward and how we can do every single thing within our power to protect kids in our schools and to make them feel safe and make their parents feel good about dropping them off.

During13:05, just after Benjamin Choucroun says, "We recently had a lockdown drill ...", Sarah Huckabee Sanders displays a cluster of:

• Prolonged blinking
• Downward vectored eyebrows
• Jaw Jut
• Nostril Flaring
• Horizontally-stretched and thinned lips
• Tightening Mid-face

During 13:08, just as Mr. Choucroun says the word, "... mental ...", Ms. Sanders creates a relative vacuum in her mouth - thus sucking in her cheeks as she once again displays an extended blink.

This dynamic is indicative of anxiety.

Ms. Huckabee Sanders repeats this sucking-in cheek display once again during 13:09 - 13:10

Then during 13:18 - 13:19, Ms. Huckabee Sanders displays successive hard swallows - indicating additional heightened anxiety.

During 13:22, Ms. Huckabee Sanders displays a Jaw Confessional, just prior to saying, "... as a kid ..."

A Jaw Confessional is characterized by a brief sideways movement of the jaw and it indicates sincerity in what a person says immediately afterward (In this case, "... as a kid - and certainly, as a parent, there is nothing that could be more terrifying for a kid to go to school and not feel safe ...").

As she says, "... terrifying ...", Sarah Huckabee Sanders:

• Pulls away her torso and head away from the audience
• Her Voice cracks
• Voice grows higher in pitch
• Inner (medial) eyebrows vector downward
• Mouth takes on a sad configuration

A Jaw Jut betrays her surge in adrenaline, just after she says, "... terrifying ..."

As she says "... safe ..." (at the end of the sentence, "... for a kid to go to school and not feel safe ..."), her face grows sadder (note down-turned inner (medial) eyebrows - as well as her down-turned mouth corners).

Once again, her voice grows higher in pitch - and it cracks.

Yet less than a second later, the White House Press Secretary is trying to smile.

But during 13:28, as she says, "... I'm sorry ...", her facial expression again becomes more empathetically-sad.

And yet, she continues her sentence with, "... I'm sorry that you feel that way ...". From a statement analysis perspective, this phrase is not apologizing at all. It's as if she's saying, "You may feel that way, but your feelings aren't based on reality. Your feelings aren't objective". It invalidates his experience and perspective. This specific statement overlaps with emotions of contempt and refusal to admit any responsibility.

At the end of this same sentence, as she says the word, "... way ...", (13:30) she looks down to her right (the corner we most frequently look to [by far] when experiencing emotional pain) - as she is trying to smile.

SUMMARY: During this exchange, Sarah Huckabee Sanders is experiencing strong cognitive and emotional dissonance. There are nonverbal (as well as verbal and paralanguage) elements of both sincerity and insincerity. This is because she's experiencing the emotional tension between what she feels as an individual - and what she's required to think-feel-say as the White House Press Secretary. It's a truly Jekyll and Hyde moment. This is Sophocles' Antigone - but with the opposite ending.

Body Language Analysis No. 4237: OJ Simpson - The Lost Confession - Part I • Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The above video includes excerpts and is centered around an interview of OJ Simpson in conducted in 2006 in association with his book, If I Did It. The book was canceled/never released - however, 400,000 physical copies of had been printed and its contents have been leaked online.

This interview is both sickening and astounding.

From both a nonverbal and Statement Analysis/Paralanguage perspective, it's a treasure trove of classic teaching material. Many hours could be spent dissecting it.

What is absolutely striking - as well as quite damning - is, throughout most of the interview, OJ slips back and forth between the first person memory of recalling actual, experienced event - to a "theoretical" (fictional) point-of-view, in which the book was supposedly written. The majority of the time, OJ spent was in memory-mode of recalling real events.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis focusing primarily on one particular nonverbal tell that OJ Simpson displays repeatedly - called The Jaw Confessional.

A Jaw Confessional is a nonverbal signal which involves a rapid and short-lived lateral (sideways) movement of the mandible (jaw). It indicates shame, regret, embarrassment - and if in the context of a verbal answer/explanation - often indicates an accompanying confession. 

To fully appreciate this nonverbal behavior, please watch the videos (on full and 1/2 speed). Here are just a few of the many examples:

Beginning at 45:53, OJ says, "This is very difficult for me to do this, ah, very difficult for me because it's hypothetical ...".

At 45:56, as he says, his second "very" of this sentence, Simpson displays an excellent example of a Jaw Confessional. Because of its extremely short duration, this nonverbal dynamic is also considered a Microexpression.

Beginning at 46:17, "Ah, this guy Charlie shows up, a guy who I had recently become friends with, and ah, Ω, I don't know why he had been by Nicole's house, but he told me, 'You wouldn't believe what's going on over there'."

During this sentence, at 46:22 as he says, "ah", and again just afterward, during 46:23 (notated by the Ω symbol), Simpson displays another Jaw Confessional.

A bit further on, beginning at 47:36, Simpson says, "I go to the front and I'm lookin' to see what's goin' on - ah, and I can see that Ω, it appears - like Nicole had ..."

During 47:42 - 47:43,  just after he says, "that", he displays another Jaw Confessional (notated with another Ω symbol).

Fascinatingly and simultaneously, Simpson also looks up to his left (both with his head/neck - but more importantly, gazing with his eyes). This is the quadrant to which the vast majority of right-hand dominant people look when they are recalling a visual memory (Simpson is right-handed). In contrast, when constructing a fictional visual scenario (or a yet to be experienced future event) - they will look up to their right. Thus, this specific nonverbal dynamic, in this context, shows us, with high probability, that Simpson is recalling a real, remembered event.

Another two Jaw Confessionals are exhibited during 48:05 and 48:06 (the first of these is captured immediately above) as he was describing his initial encounter with Ron Goldman that day, "... but I really didn't recognize him to be anyone [deep inhale] and ah - and Ω, I's [stutter] in the mood I was in, I started having words with him ..."

As he was describing bloody murder scene OJ displays another Jaw Confessionals as he said, "Yeah, I, I Ω (50:13) it's hard for me to describe it..." 

In addition, the left corner of Simpson's mouth displays a regret component.

Notice too, how Simpson is looking down and to his right. This is the quadrant to which most people look during highly emotional moments of sadness, shame, and regret.

Another Jaw Confessional is seen as he says, "... I'm telling - I don't think any two (during 50:16) people could be, ah, murdered the way they were ..."

And yet another Jaw Confessional when he says, ".... without everybody (during 50:21) been covered in blood".

Summary: This video is profound. It's utterly full of both nonverbal as well as statement analysis (paralanguage) displays indicating OJ Simpson indeed murdered his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. OJ Simpson is, very much, giving an open confessional in a not-so-camouflaged manner wrapped in the ruse (excuse) of "fiction".

Body Language Analysis No. 4234: Donald Trump's Reaction to Question Regarding Whether He Fired Rex Tillerson because the SOS called him a "Moron" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday, on the South Lawn of the White House, President Trump answered questions regarding his Twitter-firing of Secretary of State Tillerson. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis as Trump responded nonverbally - but otherwise ignored a crucial question.

You may recall various reports in early October of 2017 that Rex Tillerson called President Trump a "Moron". Moreover, many sources also revealed the Secretary of State used an additional expletive ("F***ing Moron"). This was in response to Trump's behavior during a speech he gave at the National Boy Scout Jamboree the previous July.

JOURNALIST (Beginning at 2:23 in the above video): Did you fire him because he called you a moron?

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Ω What?

SAME JOURNALIST: Did you fire him because he called you a moron?

Obviously, the President ignored the question and called on a second journalist.

During 2:26, just as he begins to answer "What?" - as well as again, a second later - during her repeating of the same question, the President's jaw shifts quickly to his left. During the first occasion (image immediately above), this movement is somewhat subtle.

However, with the second display, Trump's Jaw Confessional is more extreme - a truly Text Book example - and lasts for about 1.1 seconds.

This quick sudden lateral movement is known as a "Jaw Confessional". It's strongly indicative of Embarrassment. Notice too, Donald Trump repeated this nonverbal behavior before the Journalist completed her repeat of the question - demonstrating that he not only heard the question the first time it was asked - but also, as is often the case, he needed the additional time for mental-emotional processing. He then avoided the question, taking another.

Summary: Donald Trump's nonverbal behavior during this particular Q & A demonstrated that he is indeed embarrassed by Rex Tillerson calling him a "F***ing Moron" last summer. Yesterday's analysis of an earlier portion of this same exchange with these journalists showed the President has disdain, disgust, smugness, Schadenfreude, and is repulsed by Secretary Tillerson.

Body Language Analysis No. 4199: Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, and their Mission Impossible Helicopter Stunt • Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Tom Cruise and Rebecca Ferguson (along with Simon Pegg and Henry Cavill) were recently guests on The Graham Norton Show promoting their new film, Mission: Impossible - Fallout. What follows is a nonverbal analysis of one particular and fascinating moment.

For about 1.5 - 2.0 seconds both Tom Cruise and Rebecca Ferguson (3:00 - 3:02, Mr. Cruise for a slightly shorter duration) simultaneously displace their jaws' to their right. Neither could see the other person's face - but they were feeling precisely the same thought-emotions at exactly the same time.

This nonverbal display is known as a Jaw Confessional.  A jaw confessional is a brief lateral thrusting of the jaw which accompanies the beta emotions of embarrassment. It's also seen during apologies - as well as scenarios such as we see here - e.g., as if to say (in confession), "Look at this stupid thing I (we) did".

Summary: Tom Cruise and Rebecca Ferguson are both feeling embarrassed, more than somewhat stupid, and sheepish for performing this stunt in the latest Mission Impossible film.

Body Language Analysis No. 4188: Donald Trump Gets Booed at Davos for Calling the Press "Fake" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday, President Donald Trump was booed at the World Economic Forum in Davos when he referred to the Press as "Fake". What follows is a partial nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage analysis of this exchange.

DONALD TRUMP (beginning at 0:00): I always seemed to get, for whatever reason, a disproportionate amount of press or media, and [stuttering], throughout my whole life - somebody will explain someday why, but I've always gotten a lot. And as a businessman, I was always treated really well by the press - you know the numbers speak and things happen - but I've always really had a very good press - and it wasn't until I became a politician - that I realized how nasty, how mean, how ah vicious  - and how fake [deliberate pause] the press can be - as the cameras start going off in back [audience boos] Ω - But, but overall - I mean the bottom line - somebody said, "Well, they couldn't 've been that bad because here we are." We're President and I think we're doing a really - great job.

Just as the audience is booing, during 0:35, the President displaces his jaw for about one second to his left side (notated by Ω ). This display is known as a Jaw Confessional - and is predictive to his thought-emotions as to what he is ABOUT TO SAY, not in response to the audience's boos.

A jaw confessional is a reliable nonverbal signal telling us what is about to be said is an embarrassment, a confessional, or an apology. What Donald Trump said next was, “But, but overall - I mean the bottom line - somebody said, 'Well, they couldn't 've been that bad because here we are.'”

Additionally, from a paralanguage perspective, this example illustrates another common tell: Whenever Donald Trump says, "somebody said" - it's really the President's own ideas/thoughts/opinions - and, in his effort to make these seem more objective - he quotes a theoretical "somebody". This is further evidenced by his use of "we" and "we're" (which is also a form of "Forced Teaming" [de Becker]).

Summary: Donald Trump's nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behavior in this video indicates he does NOT think the press or news is "fake". Thus, when the President makes accusations/uses terms such as "fake news" and "fake media" - he is being deceptive.

Body Language Analysis No. 4076: Roger Stone Speaks to the Press after House Intelligence Committee Testimony - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday, Roger Stone gave a closed-door testimony before the House Intelligence Committee. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of Mr. Stone during a brief press conference he gave afterward.

During a question regarding Paul Manafort's anticipated indictment, Roger Stone displays a classic "Jaw Confessional" (from 0:41 - 0:43). A jaw confessional is a lateral movement of the jaw made just prior to an embarrassing or regretful statement or answer.

Notice also, Mr. Stone simultaneously looks down and to his right. This is by far the most common quadrant of gaze looked toward during moments of sadness and/or regret.

Roger Stone's jaw confessional in this moment possibly signals his embarrassment and/or regret for Paul Manafort. If Mr. Stone and Mr. Manafort are friends - this would be understandable. However, if Mr. Stone and Mr. Manafort are not true friends, the other possibility is that this signal would indicate any embarrassment, sadness, or regret Stone feels is self-directed - and that Mr. Stone may be anticipating his own possible indictment.

Mr. Stone displays multiple microexpressions of contempt during this exchange. The example pictured above occurs when he says, "... Senate Intelligence Committee ..." (during 0:07).

As the journalist asks, "And just what happened in there? Ah, how much of the questions focused on, ah, your, your questions - through an intermediary with Mr. Assange - as well as, ah, this discussion over Twitter with, ah, Guccifer?"

During 1:36, as soon as the journalist says, "... this discussion over Twitter ...", although we can't see it directly - we can easily tell both of Mr. Stone's arms move from his sides to his front - and he clasps his hands or holds his hand-to-wrist (e.g., a fig leaf or similar variation) - while he also simultaneously tilts his head/neck backward, inhales deeply, and displays a partial eyelid closure. This indicates that Mr. Stone feels very vulnerable to the line of questioning regarding Mr. Assange and/or Guccifer.

Mr. Stone then displays an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR) during 1:41 immediately after he says, "A fair amount. A substantial amount." An inward lip roll is a significant indicator that strong emotions are being suppressed.

Beginning at 2:19, a Journalist asks, "Is it still your view that - Russians had nothing to do with the hacks [inaudible] at the DNC or Mr. Podesta?"

Mr. Stone answers, "That is my belief - I subscribe to the view published in The Nation Magazine several weeks ago that the - the computer science seems to indicate, ah, an inside job..."

During 2:26 - 2:27, as he says "... I subscribe to the view ...", Mr. Stone covers his right eye, during an extended blink, and scratches his right eyebrow. This nonverbal cluster is strongly suggestive of deception.

Note also Mr. Stone's choice of words (one aspect of paralanguage). His answer was indirect. Rather than saying, "Yes", or "Yes, I do", or "Absolutely", or "One-hundred percent", or "That's what happened", or "That's the Truth" - or even "That's my belief". Instead, Mr. Stone used a non-contraction - "That is my belief." This along with his meandering and non-definitive response are also strongly suggestive of deception.

Another important tell is the rocking back-and-forth (lateral movement) Roger Stone displayed during this answer. This, in isolation, is a non-specific anxiety indicator.

Don't forget that multiple U.S. Intelligence organizations including the FBI, CIA, and NSA - all have independently concluded that Russia conducted the hacking of DNC - and it was Russia who also gave the stolen data to WikiLeaks.

Another important nonverbal signal was Mr. Stone's extremely frequent behavior of elevating up on his toes. Watch the video again - you will rarely see a better example of this dynamic. It betrays his significantly heightened adrenaline level during this short press conference. This begs the question, if Roger Stone was telling the truth after testifying before the House Intelligence Committee - why would his adrenaline be dramatically elevated?
