Body Language Analysis No. 4331: Donald Trump Speech Two Days Prior To Trump Tower Meeting - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On 7 June 2016, two days prior to the now infamous Trump Tower meeting, Donald Trump gave a speech in Westchester, New York. A video of that speech is included above. It took place on the same night the presumptive Republican nominee won primaries in California, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

What follows is a nonverbal analysis of a small but crucial portion of that speech - when Trump teased the electorate with the forthcoming release of damaging information on Hillary Clinton.

Beginning at 7:02, Candidate Trump continues, "... I am going to give a major speech on - probably Monday of next week and we're going to be discussing all of the things that have taken place with the Clintons. I think you're going to find it very informative and very, very interesting."

About a second after he finishes this sentence (during 7:20), Donald Trump displays a profoundly telling nonverbal signal - a Loose Tongue Jut.

A loose tongue jut indicates the thought feelings of:

• I've been bad
• I've done a foolish thing
• I've been caught/I'm going to be caught

If we look carefully though, less than a second prior to this loose tongue jut (also during 7:20), we see another significant display - subtle, but just as insightful: a Tongue-in-Cheek maneuver.

A tongue-in-cheek dynamic projects the thought-feelings of:

• I Won
• Gotcha!
• Overlapping Smugness

Now, look at this wider angle image of the same moment. Ivanka Trump's body language was also noteworthy. Ms. Trump, who, three seconds earlier, had been looking at the audience:

• Turned her head, neck, and eyes toward her father
• Shifted back and forth on her feet
• Momentarily suppressed a mouth smile
• Pulled her cheeks inward
• Blushed slightly
• Narrowed her eyes (partially closed her eyelids)

Ivanka Trump held this facial expression for about two seconds. The action of pulling or sucking one's cheeks inward - often biting the insides of the cheeks mildly to moderately - is a common subconscious and edge-of-consciousness maneuver occurring during the suppression of smiling. At 7:23, Ms. Trump can't resist and then smiles fully.

This particular cluster pattern of suppressed smiling was an example of Duping Delight. She is experiencing sincere joy-happiness in her belief that she knows a secret. It would have been very natural and normal for context to smile when your father is the presumptive Republican Presidential nominee, yet she reigned-in her smile. Her blushing while biting/sucking in her cheeks are especially telling - and indicate that she was doing her best to maintain a poker face - to avoid divulging information. She wanted to keep clandestine.

SUMMARY: Donald Trump's nonverbal behavior during this speech is highly consistent with his belief that he's about to receive politically damaging information regarding Hillary Clinton. He is smug and giddy with anticipation. This speech took place two days prior to the 9 June 2016 Trump Tower Meeting - and four days after Donald Trump Jr and Rob Goldstone arranged the meeting.

Moreover, Ivanka Trump's simultaneous nonverbal behavior indicates with high probability, that she also had foreknowledge of the Trump Tower meeting.

Body Language Analysis No. 4307: Jeff Sessions cites Bible Passage to Justify Separating Children From Parents - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Thursday 14 June 2018, Attorney General Jeff Sessions quoted a passage from the Bible in an effort to justify forcibly separating children from parents at the US-Mexican border. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of Sessions during his statement.

At multiple times during this short video segment, Attorney General Sessions smiled - and crucially, he was (partially) suppressing his smile. This was most evident when he was quoting Bible scripture.

Did AG Sessions smile because he found the bible verse humorous? No. Did he smile because he felt victorious? Possibly-Probably. Did he smile because he took joy in the act of other peoples' suffering? This is highly Probable. Thus, this is also an example of Duping Delight. Sessions believes he is fooling us (at least some of us) by quoting the Bible - and he's taking pleasure in doing so.

An important way to think of AG Sessions' behavior is that it was a classic example of Smiling Out Of Context. The vast majority of people, if put in his shoes (even if they'd believe themselves' to be "doing the right thing") - would NOT be smiling.

When a person is smiling out of context - it should always send up a red flag. This is particularly true when the ramifications bring pain, suffering, and harm to others.

We could stop right our nonverbal analysis right here and our conclusions would be accurate - yet there's more nuance.

A particular variety of smile suppression - where the central upper lip is projected forward in a semi-pointed fashion - has a very high correlation with the emotions of Schadenfreude or Malice. Schadenfreude is a German word for the emotion of "experiencing of pleasure, joy, or self-satisfaction that comes from learning of or witnessing the troubles, failures, or humiliation of another". The emotion of Schadenfreude is a watered-down version of Malice.

The image immediately above was captured during 0:41, just prior to Sessions saying, "I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13 'to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained the government for his purposes', ..."

This image shows AG Sessions less than a second later in that same sentence. Note the central forward pointing of his lips - especially his upper lip.

This facial expression is so characteristic of malice/taking pleasure in other's suffering that it's even been used for decades in the setting of animation. In this Seussian example, we see the Grinch just as he's crystallized his plans to steal the Whos' Christmas gifts in his effort to stop their Christmas.

SUMMARY: Jeff Sessions' partial suppression of his smile as he was quoting the Bible - indicates he believes he was fooling us - and that he was taking pleasure in doing so (Duping Delight). Moreover, the particular configuration of his protruding and pointed upper lip during his smile suppression also betrays his emotion of taking some pleasure in the suffering of others.

Happy Father's Day.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3305: Weatherman Liam Dutton nails pronouncing Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch - Body Language Tell (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

How many people can pronounce "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch" properly? .... And how could you tell if they got it wrong?

In this recently viral video, Meteorologist Liam Dutton nails a most difficult pronunciation of a Welsh village - and to the observant among us - we can also see an interesting and valuable body language display.

Just as the weatherman says the last syllable of the lengthy town, you can see Mr. Dutton elevate subtly (0:14 second mark) and once again with greater height during 0:15 (as he says, " ... temperature got to 21 Celsius ..."). Although we can't see them directly, we know he's elevating up on his toes. This nonverbal display is often seen during times of anxiety - yet most of the time this is of a positive variety, e.g. with excitement, pride, joy, optimism, etc. Dutton is very pleased with himself that he pulled this off - and of course he doesn't say so with words - yet his body language tells us he's proud.

This act of this toe elevation is subconsciously initiated and is one example of an "energy bleeder" which helps to dampen the expression of other nonverbal signals which he may not want to display.

What other subtle nonverbal tells us Liam Dutton is happy with his performance?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3205: "This is why mom doesn't F@cking love you!" - Lance Kale Jackman fires a gun in the Family Living Room - A Body Language Signal of Laughter Suppression (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this recently viral video, Lance Kale Jackman fires a handgun in the family living Room (It's not clear whether this was a blank or live round). His brother, shocked, then yells, "This is why mom doesn't fucking love you!"

From a body language perspective, this 9.1 second video provides a great illustration of a particular nonverbal signal known as an "Inward Lip Roll". The inward lip roll (aka ILR) is one method the psyche uses for both the inward down-regulation of, as well as the outward suppression of an emotion which, either momentarily or of longer duration, he/she does not want to be discovered or fully expressed. Most of the time an ILR is suppressing a negative emotion (anger, disgust, etc.). However here the emotion being squelched is joy/laughter - albeit in a considerably atypical scenario.

2.1 seconds

Mr. Jackman is about to fire a revolver - an action of which his brother is yet unaware.

His lips are rolled inward in an effort to try and suppress his joy-laughter. An ILR involves the teeth biting down on the lips (sometimes gently, sometimes with significant force). Note his mid-face is taught - which is easily seen in his "mustache area" and flared nostrils.

2.7 seconds

The instant he fires the gun, Jackman's inward lip roll begins to rapidly disappear - for he no longer has the need to keep a secret.

6.5

Lance Jackman begins to break into a full laughter. Notice that his blushing, which was also present earlier - is now more fully expressed.
