Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3464: Of Katie Holmes, Super Bowls, Smiles and Anxiety - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Katie Holmes was recently a guest on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. Although Ms. Holmes is a skilled actress, when she's "just being Katie" and not "in character", she's no better than average at suppressing her anxiety. A particular body language example of this behavior is examined below.

Beginning at 0:09, their dialog continues ...

Fallon: ... But did you watch the Super Bowl?

Holmes: This year, um, no, [nervous laugh] I, I di -, I was doing a cooking class with my - ch, child.

Fallon: How lame!

Holmes: I know!

Fallon: Get out!

Holmes: I know!

Fallon, Come on!

Holmes: No, no! Then we went, then we went to the museum - and then I s-, I like, right before the halftime show, I was like [knocks 5 times on Jimmy's desk] to my friend's apartment, I'm like, lemmie in, lemmie in, lemmie! - 'cause I knew Beyoncé was about to come up...."

From 0:14 through 0:21, Katie twists her ring on her right ring finger while also sliding it partially up and down.









Note that although Katie is an accomplished actor - her smile is a false one. We discern this because of her prominent display of her lower teeth.

Her fake smile is a conscious, forced behavior - while her manipulation of her ring occurs at a subconscious level. It's important to note that this does NOT indicate Katie Holmes overall personality is insincere  - however in this particular moment, her smile is indeed forced and thus insincere.

Whenever a consciously initiated nonverbal signal (e.g., a false smile) is seen simultaneously with a subconsciously driven one (e.g., the twisting and sliding of her ring) - always look to the unconscious body language in order to tell the true thought-emotions.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3460: Eli Manning Reacts to Bronco's Super Bowl Touchdown - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The Vine video shown above has gone viral - and it's no wonder. Eli Manning is shown here the moment as C.J. Anderson scores a touchdown with just over three minutes to go in the forth quarter - all but guaranteeing the Denver Broncos a Super Bowl 50 victory. It would also give his brother Peyton Manning a second Super Bowl ring.

The caption on the video reads, "Eli Manning is SO EXCITED for his brother, Peyton." However in its sarcasm, this description dramatically misses the mark - for "Non-excitement" is definitely not what Eli Manning is feeling.

Although not fully manifested, this is a classic expression of fear.

Eli's Eyelids (particularly on his right) is opened wider than baseline. Note also the unmistakable expression of the "Mouth of Fear" as the corners of Manning's mouth are pulled back and down.

This is a classic "Thousand Yard Stare" of a person in emotional shock - who's processing negative information quicker than his emotional brain can handle.

Here Eli is displaying subtle-to-mild level of contempt. This is more easily seen when viewed in the context of the video looping.

It's very likely however that his contempt is not directed at his bother as it has been suggested.



Eli Manning has a high sincerity quotient. Moreover he also has high empathy displayed in the many hours of video available for anyone to watch. So what is behind this moment? Many have made this into a sibling rivalry issue - and perhaps it is. Yet Eli's fear, sudden shock and contempt - may have an explanation in the expression of a man who has just lost a lot of money (e.g., self-contempt). The suddenness of this display and out-of-character nature of these emotions are particularly striking.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3455: Jerry Rice Undercover - Lyft Super Bowl 50 Commercial - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

If you're a Jerry Rice fan, you'll love this commercial for Super Bowl 50. It features the record setting 49ers wide receiver going undercover (as "Jay") disguised as a Lyft driver. And although he eventually reveals his identity, the intervening moments provide some fantastic nonverbal teaching examples. One passenger's body language in particular is highlighted here.

Here, Steven begins to display disbelief with his slightly elevated central (medial) eyebrows along with a mild mouth smile.

Continued and increased Elevated Central Forehead Contraction (E-CFC) with an additional pulling together of his eyebrows (for which the common idiom, "Knitting of the Brows" is often used).

Steven is showing a continued incredulity with focused and concentration (e.g., "What's going on here? Is that REALLY who I think he is?").

Mildly elevated CFC with a partial mouth smile continues (This expression of incredulity almost NEVER involves a Sincere [Duchenne] Smile and it's very often Unilateral [e.g., in this example more pronounced on Steven's right]). Note also Steven pulling or pinching his left ring finger (a common generalized anxiety tell).

Jaw Confessional

At this moment Steven had decided to openly ask "Jay" his real identity.

This  quick, short-duration, lateral movement of the jaw indicates an embarrassment component to his thought-emotion. Of course, Steven's not 100% sure he's correct, so he's feeling embarrassment-anxiety prior to vocalizing his suspicion (and he fears he may be wrong). The jaw confessional is seen in the context of a person telling you something for which they have a significant component of embarrassment. This commercial is, of course, edited - so we don't see Steven's guess.

When the jaw is maintains a prolonged thrust to one side, it indicates a completely different thought-emotion - which one?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3081: More Bill Belichick Body Language Deception Deflategate Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This video comprises most of one of Bill Belichick's recent press conferences regarding deflategate.

During this appearance Belichick displays mutliple examples of what is known as a "Tongue Jut" aka "Lizard Tongue". Tom Brady also showed us this during his press conference. Within this body language cluster-context, this nonverbal indicates that "I've been caught" or "I've been bad".

Think of this as the New England Patriots' coach's psyche calling him out in a subconscious display of self-deprecation.

"I think we all know that quarterbacks, kickers, specialists have certain preferences on footballs. They know a lot more about it than I do - they're a lot more sensitive to it than I am [Tongue Jut] ....."

These multiple displays of Tongue Juts are key nonverbal indicators telling us that Bill Belichick is lying.

These Tongue Juts are certainly not the only indicators of deception. In addtion they don't occur with every lie, but Belichick has a predilection for them.

Negotiation Nonverbal Communication Secret # 1055: The Subtle Lip Purse

This Image of Tom Brady taken during the media availability-press conference in preparation for Super Bowl XLVI yesterday, shows two subtle emotional displays.

Anyone can spot dramatic emotion. I am continually dumbfounded by the percentage of otherwise socially adept, worldly and educated adults who cannot accurately identify moderate, let alone subtle emotional body language cues. The New England quarterback is displaying a very subtle lip purse here (see: Negotiation Secret # 9: Nancy's Lip Purse, for a more obvious example). When the lips are pursed, there is a disagreement taking place. But in a high percentage of the time, the disagreement will not be verbally expressed. In addition, those who display this expression are in a "position of power" wherein they feel they can implement their plan/idea. Thus when you see this nonverbal signal, be prepared for a proverbial "end-run". There is a reason that their opinion is not being openly expressed. Ambush. Hmmm..... perhaps there are some business applications here.

Emotions rarely occur in isolation, and here the Patriots' QB is no exception. Mr. Gisele Bundchen's second emotion is disgust. The specific facial signals to look for here are both the mild tightening of the "mustache area" and particularly his subtle nostril flare. Additionally, he is not looking directly at the person(s) who is (are) the object of his feelings. We don't look directly at those who we don't like, don't respect or don't believe
