Body Language Analysis No. 4389: Jeffrey Epstein's Default Expression - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Jeffrey Epstein was arrested on Saturday 6 July 2019 for allegedly sex-trafficking dozens of minors in Florida and New York between 2002 and 2005. He will appear in federal court in New York today. He's an American financier and registered sex offender. Epstein has multiple US residences, including one in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He was initially employed at the investment bank Bear Stearns - and left to start his own firm, J. Epstein & Co. As a hedge fund manager, he became a billionaire.

In 2008, Epstein was convicted of soliciting an underage girl for prostitution - for which he served thirteen months of a suspiciously lenient eighteen-month sentence. Moreover, he was allowed to spend twelve hours a day, six days a week outside of confinement, in his personal office, on a "work release". It's also important to note, he was not in prison - but rather when confined, he was in a private wing of a Palm Beach County, Florida jail.

Most all human beings have a default facial expression which is neutral - not Jeffrey Epstein. Epstein's face tends to adopt a peculiar default expression. What follows is a nonverbal analysis of this behavior.

The majority of people would say that Epstein is not smiling in the above image - even though his mouth corners are up-turned - and they would be 100% correct. The outside/lateral portions of his upper and lower lips are brought together - while the more anterior/medial aspects of his lips are pursed - and protruding mildly forward. Not surprisingly, this is known as a Forward Lip Purse.

A forward lip purse (not to be confused with a lateral lip purse) indicates the withholding of information (i.e., a clandestine disagreement and/or a hidden plan). In addition, a forward lip purse is only displayed when a person believes they have a good chance of success in carrying out their covert actions.

Only a person who perceives themselves to be an alpha/the dominant personality present displays a forward lip purse. A person in the midst of a beta emotional moment never makes this expression.

If one is expecting or presuming honesty, the presence of a forward lip purse should NEVER be displayed. In a marriage, a business partnership, in a courtroom witness, a politician, etc. - a forward lip purse is a profound red flag. This point cannot be overemphasized.

Note also, Epstein's eyes - they are partially closed. In particular, his lower eyelids are displaying some moderate degree of tension and his eyebrows are lowered. These eye-related findings indicate disagreement and a mild, but suppressed anger.

Take care not to confuse a forward lip purse with a lateral lip purse - for they have completely different meanings.

Contrast Epstein's lower eyelids in this second image with those in the first photo.

We see a concave-up furrow in each lower eyelid together with partially closed lids. Epstein's mouth still has the forward lip purse displayed along with the peculiar pressing together of his outer/lateral portions of his lips - although this characteristic is somewhat less pronounced in this example.

Most people would identify this as a smile - and they'd be correct. It's a true/sincere smile (a Duchenne Smile). Yet, crucially, sincerity does not indicate ethical motives. Because Epstein continues to display a forward lip purse - we know he is taking joy-happiness in his surreptitious plans.

This next image is similar to the previous one - but Epstein's smile is not as sincere (or possibly it's decrescendoing) - as his eyes are opened slightly wider and his superimposed forward lip purse is more pronounced. Note its somewhat spooky similarity to the Batman character's, The Joker's smile.

Whenever you see this expression - don't trust it.

In this fourth and final image, we again see Epstein again making a forward lip purse, however - similar to the first photo, his expression also has a component of anger. The downward tilt of his head and the further, tense closing of his eyelids - both indicate he's feeling angrier compared with the first example.

Epstein's lateral gaze - colloquially known as a Side Eye - is a classic gaze pattern shown by all human beings when we're looking at someone who we:

• Don't like
• Don't trust/don't believe
• Don't respect

Note too, the slightly greater tension of the tissue beneath his nose and above his upper lip (the mustache area). This finding is also consistent with anger.

Epstein's right head tilt (his right) could be his attempt at appearing sincere - a technique sometimes employed by sociopaths. Another highly possible etiology could be a congenital, left IV Cranial Nerve palsy (aka a Trochlear Nerve Palsy) - an ailment which is not uncommon.

SUMMARY:  Jeffrey Epstein's default expression, a Forward Lip Purse, indicates his withholding of information - that of a hidden plan and/or an undisclosed disagreement. In these images, the Billionaire believed himself to be alpha/dominant and those with whom he was interacting to be beta/subordinate. He was hyper-confident/arrogant in his belief of success in initiating and executing his furtive acts.

Everyday insincere default expressions are truly forms of living masks worn by "regular" people all around us - and yet these feigned feelings frequently go unrecognized.

It's crucial to emphasize that none of the expressions shown here are indications of - or correlate specifically with sex-related crimes.

Yet it's also important to stress, regardless of your endeavors - whether you're a playing Monopoly, speaking to your spouse, counseling a patient, cross-examining a witness, or negotiating with a criminal for the release of a hostage - when your opposition displays a forward lip purse - protect your flank.

Body Language Analysis No. 4293: Why is Harvey Weinstein Smiling? - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Friday morning, Harvey Weinstein turned himself into the New York City Police. He was subsequently arrested and charged with rape, criminal sex act, sex abuse, and sexual misconduct. These allegations involve two women in separate events. Weinstein's bond was set at $10 Millon and he was released on $1 Million cash bail. He was fitted with a GPS tracking device which limits his travel to New York and Connecticut. The judge also imposed a temporary protective order against Weinstein requiring him to stay away from these two women. At least 80 women have allegations of sexual abuse against the former film producer.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of Harvey Weinstein as he exited New York City's 1st Precinct in handcuffs.

In this moment, Harvey Weinstein is displaying a Sincere Smile (Duchenne Smile) including:

• Partially Closed Eyelids
• Concave-up Furrows in Both Lower Eyelids
• Mouth Smile with only the upper Teeth Visible
• Upward Vectored Cheek Muscles

What are some possible reasons why any person would ever smile in such a scenario?

• Harvey Weinstein's experiencing a Psychotic Break
• He feels he knows something which we don't - and he believes this will give him a significant advantage (Thus a possible example of the phenomenon of Duping Delight)
• He's under the influence of significant amounts of Drugs or Alcohol
• He's Suicidal

SUMMARY: This is a profound example of Smiling Out of Context. Any time you see someone behaving in a manner so disparate from how the vast majority of people would normally behave - particularly jovially - and especially in such a serious circumstance - stop and re-evaluate the situation. Don't brush-off this behavior. If you haven't identified the specific reason, then you're absolutely missing something crucial.

Body Language Analysis No. 4049: The Arrest of University Hospital Nurse Alex Wubbels - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On 26 July 2017, Salt Lake City Police Detective Jeff Payne arrested Alex Wubbels, a Nurse at the University of Utah Hospital's Burn Unit. The video featured above has gone viral. Another lengthier version of the incident, recorded from a different view is included immediately below.






The police wanted to draw a blood sample from a patient who had been in a motor vehicle accident. This patient was unconscious (thus, by definition, patient consent was not possible), the patient was not under arrest, and there was no warrant (electronic or otherwise). These requirements (as per hospital policy and the law) were calmly conveyed (via speech and in writing) by Ms. Wubbels to the police officers.

Here is a portion of their dialog:

NURSE ALEX WUBBELS: Brad, I'm just putting you on speaker so you can. So, I have the, it says, "Obtaining blood samples for police enforcement from patients suspected to be under the influence", Okay? This is something that you guys agreed to with this hospital.

The three things that allow us to do that are if you have an electronic warrant, patient consent, or patient under arrest - and neither of those things - patient can't.

The patient can’t consent, he’s (Officer Payne) told me repeatedly that he doesn’t have a warrant, and the patient is not under arrest. So I’m just trying to do what I’m supposed to do - that’s all, so.” *

OFFICER JEFF PAYNE: Okay, So I take it without those in place, I’m not going to get blood? Is that - am, am I fair to surmise that?

NURSING SUPERVISOR [via speaker phone]: Alex, you're not [inaudible]

NURSE ALEX WUBBELS: Yeah, I

OFFICER JEFF PAYNE: Okay [over-talking]

NURSING SUPERVISOR [via speaker phone]: Why is he continuing to blame you?

NURSE ALEX WUBBELS [over-talking]: I don't know. I have no idea why he's blaming me. I'm just referencing

NURSING SUPERVISOR [over-talking, via speaker phone]: Why are you blaming the messenger, Sir?

OFFICER JEFF PAYNE: She’s the one that has told me "no".

NURSING SUPERVISOR [via speaker phone]: Yeah but Sir, you’re making a huge mistake right now, like, like, you're making a huge mistake 'cause you’re threatening a nurse [inaudible] ...

OFFICER JEFF PAYNE: Okay. No, we're done. We're, we're done! You're under arrest! [inaudible] We're done!....

NURSE ALEX WUBBELS: No! No! Somebody Help me! Stop!

Screaming and yelling follows as Officer Payne grabs Alex Wubbels by the under her arms from behind and shoves her through the [automatic] doors to the outside the building where he then handcuffs her and takes her to a police vehicle.

From a body language perspective, the video is fairly limited. We have very minimal facial video of Officer Payne (in the second video). Omitting the physicality and violence associated with the arrest, and concentrating on the preceding events, there are few valuable nonverbal teaching moments, some of which are discussed here.

The image above is from 1:05 in the first video, just as Officer Payne says, "She’s the one that has told me 'no' ".

You'll note Nurse Alex Wubbels' abdomen, torso, head (and with high probability, her feet too) are not pointing at Officer Payne (his body camera is recording this video). Only her eyes are turned to meet him/his face. Human beings have a strong tendency to NOT look directly (e.g., not "whole body point") at people whom we:

• Don't like
• Don't respect
• Don't trust

If we go back a few seconds to 0:41 (also in the first video, just after she says, "I’m just trying to do what I’m supposed to do - that’s all, so" and as Officer Payne says "... Okay, so I take it ..."), we can see Nurse Wubbels just after she momentarily turned toward Officer Payne. She immediately turned her torso and head away while maintaining eye contact. Nuancing her facial expression further, we can see her:

• Upper eyelids open widely
• Lower eyelids tense
• Flared Nostrils
• Central Forehead Contracted
• Eyebrows lowered

Although not fully expressed, Nurse Wubbels is displaying a face of fear (this was also expressed, but more subtly, in the first image).

In the second video, during 5:43 - 5:45, as Officer Payne says, "Okay, So I take it without those in place, I’m not going to get blood?", he is seen grabbing his own right wrist with his left hand as he gestures with his right hand in a palm-down fashion (this image was captured during 5:44 as he says "... without ...").

Gesturing with one's palm oriented downward carries an alpha emotional tone - and the added rapid oscillation elevates it to a hyper-alpha level. It's gesture of power and authority. A person using palm down-gestures has his mind made up. He cannot be reasoned with - for he's far from his emotional baseline.

The gripping of his own wrist here portends the violence which is about to occur. Officer Payne's attempt at self-control and his growing frustration with Nurse Wubbels is momentarily displayed with his own wrist acting as a temporary surrogate for her.

Update: Although Nurse Alex Wubbels was assaulted, told she was under arrest, handcuffed, held against her will, and prevented from doing her job (all in front of her co-workers) - she was kept on hospital grounds and released that evening without arrest. Officer Jeff Payne remains on duty but has been removed from the field and has been taken off the police department's Phlebotomy unit. There are both ongoing civilian as well as an internal police investigation regarding this incident.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3677: Chris Brown's Pre-Arrest Instagram Rant - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Chris Brown was arrested yesterday after a nine hour ordeal at his home with police. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and has been booked and released after posting bail.

Prior to his arrest (but after the police arrived at his home) the singer, songwriter, actor, dancer posted a video on Instagram. A good portion of this video is included as part of the above news clip.

From a nonverbal perspective, Chris Brown's Instagram rant provides a good example of one variety of an emotional display of frustration. Frustration is an amalgam of anger and disappointment - signaling anxiety experienced when there's a disparity between what occurs vs. what is expected. Of course, as observers of body language, we don't have to agree with the point of view of those who display these feelings, but to those experiencing them (as with any emotion) - they feel just as valid as our own.

Note Brown's extreme head and neck motion - with these he is making relatively high amplitude, moderate-to-high frequency sweeping and rocking motions. This nonverbal behavior is highly characteristic for frustration.

Moreover the frequent removal and repositioning of his hood (or similar behavior if had been wearing a hat) acts as a frustration amplifier. This same phenomenon is exemplified by (and overlaps with) a firm gripping and grabbing of the top and/or back of the head.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3084: Public Defender Jami Tillotson being Arrested in San Francisco Court House - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday 27 January 2015, Jami Tillotson, a Deputy Public Defender for the City of San Francisco was arrested (in the Hall of Justice) and was booked for a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest. This was in response to her reaction to police when she refused to let them question or photograph her client.

Chief Public Defender (and former San Francisco Mayoral Candidate) Jeff Adachi said that the arresting officer (Sergeant Brian Stansbury) had no right to question Tillotson's client without her being present and that Tillotson's arrest was unlawful. The police department disputes this claim and said the officer's actions were fully justified.

The public defender's office also revealed that Officer Stansbury has been the subject of a federal civil rights lawsuit that was brought against him by another San Francisco Police officer alleging racial profiling. Adachi has also accused Stansbury of racial profiling in this incident as well - since Tillotson's client is also African-American (who was there on a matter unrelated to what Officer Stansbury wanted to question him about).

The scenario was of course very emotionally charged and since it was captured on video - this provides an excellent nonverbal example. What follows is a partial body language analysis of Public Defender Jami Tillotson.

Self-Righteous Head and Torso Wiggle

Sometimes isolated to just the head or even the jaw, these rapid side-to-side movements are often accompanied by increases in speed, volume and pitch of the spoken words (as is seen here) and indicates a very strong conviction of being morally right and indicates a relative feeling of alpha status (despite the fact that she is being arrested by police officers who are of course armed). The self-righteous head/jaw/torso wiggles are 99.9% of the time subconsciously generated and can be thought of as a manifestation of swagger.

Forward Lip Purse

The forward lip purse here indicates that she believes she is in the right, and (like the self-righteous head/torso wiggle) also indicates she believes she is the relative alpha and that she knows things the officer doesn't know (e.g. a clandestine disagreement and/or a clandestine plan). Moreover she believes she has a good chance of pulling off her plan and becoming triumphant. The fact that this is a tightened version of a forward lip purse indicates there is a significant component of anger present as well.

Tongue in Cheek (forward tongue in cheek) in this context indicating "I just won", "I caught you". She believes that the officer is completely in the wrong - and his actions are being captured on video. As with all nonverbals, the tongue in cheek display has different interpretations based on the other body language with which it is clustered.

Inward Lip Roll (ILR)

The inward lip roll tells us that she is suppressing internal growth of emotion (e.g., trying to control her temper) as well as trying to prevent outward expression of similar negative emotion.

The fact that Ms. Tillotson is oscillating back and forth between different emotions (emotional dissonance) is not surprising here since she (and many others in retrospect) felt that she was correct and lawful in her assertions - and yet it is quite an unpleasant experience to be arrested.

This low resolution image of Eric Frein was taken on Thursday 30 October just after his capture. Frein had been a fugitive since 12 September 2014 after the alleged murder of Pennsylvania officer Bryon Dickson and the alleged attempted murder of another trooper, Alex Douglas and been added to the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list.

Frein's expression in this photo has been repeatedly misidentified by the media. It is intriguing and yet very common that many professionals who are otherwise socially adept repeatedly misidentify subtle and often moderate emotions. Frein's primary emotion in this moment is that of regret. What is his secondary (less prominent) emotion?

It is important to note that with this one image we cannot say what is the source of his regret - yet as majorities would speculate, it is of course most probably not for the crimes he is alleged to have committed - but rather that he was caught, or he is mentally chastising himself for mistakes leading to his capture.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2933: Will Hayden ("Sons of Guns") Arrested - Body Language of His Mug Shot (PHOTO)

William Hayden, the star of Discovery Channel's "Sons of Guns" was arrested on Tuesday 26 August 2014. He has been charged with aggravated rape of a 12 year-old girl. Hayden is being held on a $250,000 bond. Earlier this month (9 August) he was arrested and charged with child molestation and crimes against nature and later released on $150,000 bail. These allegations are sickening beyond words.

The body language displayed in Hayden's "mug shot" (above) is significant in several ways. Although the camera angle is oblique and directed upwards, he is exhibiting mild facial asymmetry consistent with contempt. This particular angle makes his left nostril seem more dilated than it is - and thus makes a complete nonverbal evaluation somewhat difficult. Yet his left nostril is still more flared than his right side. This detail is betrayed by the slight elevation of his left upper lip along with a subtle upward contraction of his left cheek (and an asymmetrical eyelid closure) as well as a relatively greater deepening on his left of the furrow running from just above the nostril to lateral to the corner of the mouth (nasolabial fold). This cluster of findings results in a mild "snarl" appearance and indicates the emotion of contempt.

Another finding of particular note is the partial bilateral closure of his eyelids (slight more on his left). This is notable because of the tightening of his lower eyelids (along with the lack of lower eyelid, concave-up furrows). It's a contempt amplifier and also is an important nonverbal signal which accompanies anger.

His eyebrows are also lowered - further indicating the emotion of anger.

The absence of the lateral portion of each eyebrow suggests the possibility of hypothyroidism (very easy to medically test for), Trichotillomania (of which he has no other physical signs but is possible) - or the deliberate removal of this portion of his eyebrows (either by shaving or laser). Some people (primarily men) have been known to remove the outer eyebrows in an effort to deliberately give a more angry and ominous appearance.

We all occasionally feel and thus display emotions contempt and disgust. Yet those who chronically show nonverbal signs of these emotions have a significantly higher tendency towards violence. Thus the recognition of these and other body language signs are extremely valuable in the prevention of sexual assault and as well as overall threat assessment tools. Do not ignore them.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2858: Hope Solo, Domestic Violence, Arrests and Wedding Rings - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Hope Solo, goalkeeper for the Seattle Reign FC and two-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist, was arrested earlier today for alleged domestic violence against her sister and her nephew.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of the recent video interview above (17 April 2014) and sheds some light on probable underlying causes behind her alleged violence.

Many times throughout this video, Hope twists her wedding ring. This is a strong indicator of anxiety - and more specifically within the context of her marriage.

Hope Solo is married to former professional football (American Style) player Jerramy Stevens.

And although Solo's been interviewed many times on national television under more what otherwise would otherwise be more stressful conditions, the dramatic frequency of this recent body language display indicates greater anxiety "beneath the surface" and foreshadows a break-up in her marriage.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2697: Justin Bieber Arrested, in Court - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Justin Bieber was arrested early Thursday morning in Miami Beach. He was charged with DUI, resisting arrest and driving on an expired drivers license. He was released on a $2500 bond. What follows is a partial analysis of some of his body language.

During the 0:11 - 0:17 segment, Bieber shows us a Forward Lip Purse. This nonverbal display indicates that he is in clandestine disagreement with the judge. It also indicates that he feels he is the alpha in the room. Betas don't make this in the company of those they perceive to to alphas. It also indicates that regardless of what words are spoken, that he has a plan and that he believes he has a good chance of executing it with success.

Just a few seconds later (0:21 - 0:27), Bieber displays an asymmetrical lip purse. What does this nonverbal indicate?

What other body language particulars, if any, influence the interpretation of this facial expression?

At the 0:56 - 0:58 segment, a fantastic example of a "Tongue in Cheek" is seen. This nonverbal can signify several emotions depending on the other signals with which it is clustered.These include: "I just won/I just caught you", anger, sadness, grief, sexual provocation or deception. Which of these apply to Justin in this moment?

At the 1:15 mark, we see a beautiful example of a microexpression of fear manifested most demonstratively on Justin Bieber's left neck. Watch this on the video and you will note the very fleeting contraction of his "neck of fear" (contraction of Sternocleidomastoid and Platysma muscles on Bieber's left).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2576: Chris Brown's Body Language - a Signal of Psyche's Suppressing Emotions ... and Anger and .... (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Chris Brown is once again in very hot water. The singer and his bodyguard were arrested in Washington D.C. this morning and charged with felony assault. Among other things, this would constitute a parole violation for the entertainer and a high probability of prison time. He has a history of felony assault of his former girlfriend, Rihanna. The above video is from a court appearance earlier this year in July.

At the 0:06 mark, Chris Brown can be seen displaying a "Tongue Jut" (aka "Lizard Tongue"). This classic body language signal is significant the emotional tone of: "I did a foolish thing", I got away with something", "I've been bad" or "I've got caught". It can also be a nonverbal sign of excitement (when clustered with other nonverbals it can indicate excitement or self-deprecating humor). 










Less than a second later, Brown displays an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR) with a coexisting "Jaw Jut" (0:06.5 - 0:08.5). In this context a jaw jut is an extremely reliable body language indicator of anger.

The simultaneous inward lip roll is a signal of the psyche's attempt at suppressing an (outward) emotional display as well as preventing internal emotion escalation. It is much more commonly seen with negative emotions (here anger) however it can sometimes be seen in positive emotions such as joy-happiness.


When a man displays a jaw jut, there is a good chance that the anger will escalate to violence. This probability is very significantly increased if the hand(s) are forming fists. Red flag time.

Another inward lip roll with somewhat less jaw jutting is exhibited at 0:26 - 0:28.
