Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3362: Marco Rubio and Alleged Misuse of State Party Credit Card - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Overall Marco Rubio has a significantly greater sincerity quotient than most of his Presidential-candidate peers (which will certainly benefit him in his pursuit as the Republican Nominee). Yet in this GMA interview, the U.S. Senator from Florida displays significant anxiety tells. And whenever people sense anxiety - it often calls into question their sincerity, likability, trust and leadership.

Beginning at about 2:00 - when George Stephanopoulos asks Senator Rubio about allegations regarding misuse of a Republican party credit card for personal use, Rubio displays a significant cluster of nonverbal behavior.

During 2:05 - 2:07 we see bilateral and multiple rapid blinking with deep inhalation and a leaning back in his chair.

Followed by a very evanescent Eye Roll (2:07) indicating an impatient dismissal with an element of contempt.

Then Rubio keeps his hands below the table. He should have been sitting closer to the so that he could more easily keep his hands above it. There is a strong tendency to not trust someone when their hands are hidden or less visible. This is particularly true in the dynamic context of responding to an accusation (Throughout much of this interview Rubio's hands were beneath the table - only his right hand was sometimes above it).

Rubio then has to clear his throat and performs a hard swallow.

In summary, although verbally Senator Rubio seems to explain this credit card situation well - his nonverbal behavior indicates his anxiety regarding it is disproportionately high - and he has significant impatience and contempt for those who raise questions regarding it.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2599: Spotting Subtle Signals of Arrogance - Tiger Woods and Rachel Nichols (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this short excerpt from a longer interview, Tiger Woods responds to Rachel Nichols' question, "As that stretch gets longer and longer without a major, what's that like when it builds? What's that pressure like as it builds and builds?"

Woods responds, "Well I [inaudible] for me, I look at it, the fact that it's, it takes a career. You know for, for Jack it took 'em 'til he was 46 [laugh]. Ummm, it takes a long time to win a lot a lot of Major Championships. And you're going to have your, your years where you play really well and may clip - you know two or three out of there. And then you're going to have your years where you just don't win anything, but you're there. Ah, you just don't happen to win. [Deep inhalation] And you know quite frankly over the last, well since oh-eight, um, I've been there with a chance to win in about half of them. Ummm, just haven't seem to have won one."

Between 0:37 - 0:38, Woods increases both his rate of blinking as well as some of his blinks' duration. This is known as an extended blink.

Just prior to this (0:36 - 0:37) Tiger also takes a deep inhalation.

At the 0:40 mark, Tiger displays a "Tongue Jut" (aka "Lizard Tongue"). This nonverbal conveys, "I've been bad", "I got caught", "I did a foolish thing" or "I got away with something".

It can also be a sign of excitement (a' la Katie Holmes).

All of the above very short-lived noverbals occur within a few seconds of each other (four to five seconds). In addition, Woods' use of the phrase, "... you know quite frankly ..." during the precise time of the increased and extended blinks is particularly telling. When "quite frankly" or "frankly" is spoken - it signals that the person views himself as an alpha relative to whom they are speaking. It also signifies he has an agenda and is in a highly subjective mindset. He is not interested in listening or observing. It is a strong sign of ego-driven behavior and much of the time, although the word declares truth, there is very often an element of deception present (paralanguage). Tiger is rationalizing aloud - yet within the context of his own self-talk, he does not feel he is (or has been for the last 5 seasons) the "same old Tiger".

This cluster of increase rate and duration of blinking, deep inhalation, a tongue jut and use of the phrase, "... you know quite frankly ..." is significant for arrogant, egocentric and patronizing behavior. Any recipient know they are 'being played' and viewed as a beta.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2433:
Vladimir Putin & David Cameron Disagree on Syria -
A Body Language Evaluation of Russian Leader

Prior to the 2013 G8 Summit in Northern Ireland, David Cameron and Vladimir Putin met at 10 Downing Street on Sunday. On the subject of the Syrian Civil War, the two could hardly be further apart. What follows below is some body language analysis of the Russian President from a portion their press conference (video above) [Note that Mr. Putin is receiving translation so Cameron's words and Vladimir's responses are not linked as closely as if they both were speaking the same language].

During 0:23 - 0:25, Mr. Putin takes a deep two second inhalation followed by a "Bilateral Eyelid Closure" just after  Mr. Cameron says, "...I believe that Assad is responsible for tearing his country apart ..." indicating strong anxiety with emotional blocking.

Putin is trying to control his temper - and he does so outwardly - however internally it escalates and anger signals can be clearly seen (below).

Vladimir clearly displays a "Jaw Jut" at 0:29. A jaw jut in this cluster-context is a nonverbal signal which is highly indicative of anger. This occurs just after Vladimir says, "...and that to end Syria's nightmare he (Bashar al-Assad) has to go."

What other emotion may the body language of a jaw jut indicate?

The former KGB officer displays a Cheek Scratch at 0:31. In this cluster context this MAP (manipulator, adaptor, pacifier) indicates strong anxiety in response to the Prime Minister's statement, "...The new evidence this week of how the regime is gassing its people ..."

At 0:36 Mr. Putin displays an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR) which indicates an attempt of the psyche to control a strong emotion and its outward display. Here Vladimir is trying to suppress his anger.

Of course, there are truckloads of other nonverbals here - what are does Putin display? And Cameron?
