Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3294: Ana Ivanovic, Lip Biting, the U.S. Open and Body Language (PHOTOS)

We can say, "Those pepperoncinis are hot" or "That woman is hot" or "It's was hot in Phoenix today" or "Donald Trump's candidacy is a hot topic" - these all contain the word "hot" - which although are all spelled the same and pronounced the same - have wholly different meanings. Any young teen could discern these various homonyms because of the context their respective sentences give them. Body language signals also very often have multiple meanings - depending on the other nonverbal signs with which they are clustered. Lip biting is but one example of this nonverbal phenomenon.

In this image we see Ana Ivanovic, currently 7th in WTA women's singles rankings. Today - the first day of the U.S. Open Tennis Championship, this Serbian was upset by Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova (6-3, 3-6, 6-3). Note in this image Ms. Ivanovic is biting her bottom lip. In this context it's indicative of some anxiety (although not excessive) as well as very concentrated, focused thought. Intriguingly, within the realm of tennis, lip biting is almost never seen during a serve - essentially only during a return.

As with the "hot" homonym exampled above (and in a non-tennis setting) when Lip Biting is accompanied by a different set of facial and body expressions - it can be indicative of varied meanings such as - anger, anxiety, focused thought, sadness, embarrassment, mischievousness, frustration, vulnerability and even sexual arousal. Yet without knowing and recognizing all the words in a nonverbal sentence, most people often have no idea how to color the emotional nuance of the moment.

Here Heather Watson (Great Britain) is returning to Lauren Davis (United States). Watson lost to the match, 7-6, 7-6.

Canadian Milos Raonic - in another lip-biting return defeated Tim Smyczek (U.S.), 6-4, 7-6 (8), 6-1.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3224: Jordan Spieth, the U.S. Open, and a Classic Fear Expression - Body Language (PHOTOS)

This is a great example of a fear expression on Jordan Spieth. Just after he was awarded the trophy upon winning the U.S. Open yesterday - its top accidentally fell off. In this moment the corners of his mouth are classically pulled backwards and laterally as well as slightly downwards. The World's top-ranked golfer's jaw is also clenched. His mid-face and lower eyelids are tense. Flaring of his nostrils is pronounced. Because his head and neck are tilted down and forward, the tissue on front of his neck has adopted an evanescent pseudo-double (multiple) chin configuration (more so than simply bending forward creates). If his head were more upright, this "neck of fear" would have had a more common "tenting" and taught appearance.

How can you differentiate this lower-level social fear expression from that of a more threatening fear - such as would be seen with a physical danger scenario?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3223: Jordan Spieth, the U.S. Open, Annie Verret, Kissing and Body Language (PHOTOS)

The image above shows Jordan Spieth kissing his girlfriend, Annie Verret - after winning the Masters earlier this year. Ms. Verret was noticeably absent from Spieth's victory at the U.S. Open today. Spieth is the first to win the first two of the year's majors since Tiger Woods in did so 2002. And Jordan Spieth won't even turn 22 until next month.

From a body language perspective, it's notable that the World's number one ranked golfer has his eyelids closed in both images. As human beings, we close our eyes during a kiss when true affection is present. Forty percent of the mass of our brain is dedicated to the visual system. In addition, ninety percent of the sensory input is visual. The other four senses must "share" the left-over ten percent. Most every child will tell you that people who are blind will acquire a greater tactile sense. This is absolutely true of course - however few are aware that this phenomenon will also happen immediately with those who have excellent (or any) vision - though to a lesser extent.

When we close our eyes, the blood flow and electrical activity of the visual portions of our brains' diminishes slightly (and immediately). This mild decrease allows greater resources to be redistributed and divided-up between the other four senses - as well as our brains' cognitive and emotional centers. Thus we close our eyes during a sincere kiss because we want to feel it more - we want to drink-in every ounce of emotion. We want to live more deeply. Spieth is shown here kissing two things for which he truly feels deep affection - Annie Verret and the U.S. Open Trophy. The trophy is a surrogate for the accomplishment as well as representing the moment of victory. Like a sommelier tasting fine wine or a lover - he is drinking-in the moment to its fullest.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2449:
Jessica Korda Fires Her Caddie &
Recruits her Boyfriend
Body Language at Women's U.S. Open (Video, Photos)

During the third round of last week's LPGA's U.S. Open, Jessica Korda fired her caddie Jason Gilroyed. He was immediately replaced by her boyfriend Johnny DelPrete. The above image was taken during the third round. Gilroyed about to be fired is standing next to her. The photo below is a close up of Korda's face. She is displaying both disgust with a superimposed component of contempt. This could be more clearly seen and evaluated if this were a straight-on, front (anterior) view.

Note Ms. Korda's right lip and the region above the right lip is vectored slightly upward relative to her left in what some may call a "snarl". And although is difficult to tell definitively, the furrow to the side of her nose is more pronounced and higher on her right. What other facial configuration seen here signals contempt or disgust?

This photo is taken from the video below. Jessica's arms are in the "Thumbs Forward Arms Akimbo". This was done when she was primarily speaking about her boy friend and his job caddying. This nonverbal signals a supportive emotional mindset. It also can be seen during moments of curiosity. This body language indicates a predominance of beta qualities. It is commonly seen displayed by adults caring for young children on the playground or by elementary school teachers in their classrooms. This nonverbal is exhibited much more commonly in females and gay men.

Here Jessica was talking about firing her caddie. Her arms akimbo stance has morphed to a "Fingers Forward" variety. This signifies a significant "dialing up" of her alpha qualities. Her mind and emotion have momentarily become more dominant and assertive.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2107:
Andy Murray, Affection and Savoring the Moment

Andy Murray finally won his major. He was the first British (Scottish) man since 1936 to do so. Those who even peripherally follow tennis have watched and rooted for him during this struggle. After finishing a heart-wrenching second to Roger Federer at Wimbledon, and then defeating Federer a few weeks later to win a Gold Medal at the London Olympics, Murray beat Novak Djokovic in five sets at the U.S. Open yesterday at Flushing Meadows, 7–6(12–10), 7–5, 2–6, 3–6, 6–2.

Whenever we kiss another person, or in this case a highly-symbolic object - if our eyes are closed during the kiss, it is a strong nonverbal indicator of deep affection. Ninety-percent of our sensory input is visual - as is forty percent of the human brain's mass. Thus when we close our eyes, the blood flow/oxygen/nutrients are slightly increased to the non-visual portions of the brain - smell, taste, touch, hearing as well as cognition and emotional functions. We shut our eyes when we are trying to drink-in the entire experience and fully savor the moment. This all occurs subconsciously. In the context of a relationship, the primary focus of the mind during a kiss should be love and affection. If there is a repeated pattern of "eyes open during kissing" (and/or hugging) - this is a body language red flag of waning (or false) affection.
