Body Language Analysis No. 4173: California Mud Slides - Rescue and Surprise - Nonverbal And Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Up until this moment, this fourteen-year-old girl had unaware of the extensive damage to her neighborhood from the California mudslides. Upon being rescued - and pulled from her collapsed home in Montecito, California - she was not prepared for the emotional impact of the seeing the flotsam and jetsam.

In this moment of realization, she displays a classic facial expression of surprise. Note the shape of her widely opened mouth - it's a vertically oriented ovoid. Additionally, none of her teeth are visible. Both of these features are components of sincere surprise. During feigned surprise - teeth are exposed and the opening of the mouth takes on a horizontal oval shape.

Simultaneously, her eyelids are also opened very widely - along with both elevated eyebrows and forehead.

True surprise is a very short-lived emotion, lasting only one to two seconds - as it's rapidly replaced with another emotion (commonly fear, anger, joy, sadness, embarrassment, etc.).

May we stand with the survivors as they recover as we grieve for those who have died in the California mudslides.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3655: Rescue In Baton Rouge Floodwater - Body Language & Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Unfortunately unprecedented flooding continues in northern Louisiana. Fortunately, empathy and heroism abound.

In this dramatic and heroic rescue of a woman and her dog, an excellent example of an expression of fear can be seen.

Note how the corners of woman's mouth are pulled out (laterally) and down. Her mid-face is very tightened and her nostrils are flared. This nonverbal cluster is highly indicative of fear.
