Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3478: Donald Trump Jr Does Not Like his Father's Statement, "I Love the Poorly Educated" - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last night Donald Trump won the Nevada Republican Caucuses. It was his third primary/caucus victory following South Carolina and New Hampshire.

During his victory Speech (beginning in the above video at 4:21) Mr. Trump continues, "... So we won the evangelicals. We won with young. We won with old. We won with highly educated. We won with poorly educated. I love the poorly educated! [eyebrow flash-prolonged blink followed two seconds later by a mouth of fear] We're the smartest people. We're the most loyal people ..."


At 4:33, Donald Trump Jr. - (to the candidates right) quickly raises his eyebrows (an eyebrow flash) while simultaneous displaying a prolonged blink. This nonverbal cluster indicates a Condescending Disagreement with a component of Surprise.
 

Immediately after the display above (during 4:35), Donald Trump Jr. displays a Fear Mouth. Watching the video, some may say it looks as if he's trying to bite the air. There's also some tightening of the mid-face (particularly the "mustache area") and flaring of his nostrils.


Please watch the video segment several times to fully appreciate the subtle, evanescent and dynamic nature of these closely-clustered microexpressions.

Summary: Donald Trump Jr. was surprised his father said, "We love the poorly educated!" Moreover in the moment he felt a condescending disagreement towards him. After he a couple of seconds to think about it, the younger Trump then feels significant fear for the ramifications of his father's words.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3470: Taylor Swift's Speech at 2016 Grammys - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last night at the 2016 Grammy Awards, Taylor Swift won the Album of the Year for "1989". She won the same award for her second album, "Fearless" in 2009.

Many thought Swift was directing her remarks at Kanye West during her acceptance speech. Who ever these were for, there was significant negative emotion being projected. What follows are two classic nonverbal displays - occurring in the space of a single word.

".... And as the first woman to win 'Album of the Year' at the Grammys twice, I want to say to all the young women out there: there are going to be people along the way who - will try to undercut your success - or take credit for your accomplishments, or your fame - but if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you’re going, you’ll look around and you will know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there and that will be the greatest feeling in the world. Thank you - for this moment."

2:09 as she says, "... credit ..."

Partial closing of the eyelids with moderate muscle tension (particularly evidenced in the lower eyelids) indicative of mild to moderate levels of anger.

2:09 as Swift says,  as she says "... Credit ...", she displays significant disgust evidenced by mild-moderate mid-facial tension with mild nasal flaring.

Swift's disgust is amplified by the anger continued eyelid tension and partial closure.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3194: U.S. Senator Thad Cochran Marries Longtime Aide Kay Webber - Body Language (PHOTOS)

This Memorial Weekend, Mississippi Senator Thad Cochran married his longtime (since 1981) assistant, Kay Webber. Rose Cochran - the senator's former wife, passed away in December 2014 after 13 years in a nursing home where, unfortunately, she suffered from dementia. In his effort to gain election to the U.S. Senate last year, Cochran's republican primary challenger, Chris McDaniel, accused Cochran of having an affair with Ms. Webber - an allegation which Cochran then denied.

The above image was taken in 2008 and although we don't know the full context of the moment - from a body language perspective it is very telling.

Senator Cochran is trying to smile - and many body language novices may indeed call this expression a "social smile" - however there's a mild (approximately a 3 on a 1-to-10 scale) yet significant fear display on his face. Do you see the specific nonverbal component this subtlety?

In stark contrast, Ms. Webber's face displays moderate disgust (about 4 out of 10). The cluster of her mid-face tension (above her upper lip and below her nose) as well as the flaring of her nostrils is unmistakable.

Sophia Loren recently went on record (in her memoir, "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: My Life") describing what she remembered about this famous Hollywood moment at a Paramount-organized party for her in 1957 while sitting with Jayne Mansfield:

"She came right for my table. She knew everyone was watching. She sat down. And now, she was barely… Listen. Look at the picture. Where are my eyes? I’m staring at her nipples because I am afraid they are about to come onto my plate. In my face you can see the fear. I’m so frightened that everything in her dress is going to blow—BOOM!—and spill all over the table."

While Loren may have felt social "fear" because Mansfield's dress was going to "blow" before or after this famous "Sideways Glance" photo was captured, in THIS MOMENT she did not feel any fear, rather her expression is classic for disgust (along with some anxiety as well). While she was suppressing her display somewhat, her mid-facial tension, the flaring of her nostrils, along with the leaning away of her head and neck betray her true emotion of disgust. What other disgust amplifier signal is present here?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2051: Mitt Romney regarding Campaign Finance Rules - Near-Microexpression of Disgust

During this recent interview in Israel, Mitt Romney describes his feelings regarding an aspect of campaign finance rules with which he voices a strong disagreement. At the 0:24 - 0:25 mark, he displays a facial "near-microexpression" of disgust (expression here is of slightly longer duration than is classically defined for microexpression, 0.04 to 0.50 seconds). Note his mid-face tightening (mustache area) with both nostrils flaring and dynamic contraction on the bridge of his nose. His head/neck also retracts slightly as well as a concomitant partial closure of his eyelids, an increase in the "crow's feet" and lowering of his eyebrows. His nasal-labial furrow also becomes more pronounced. Since Mr. Romney's verbal and his nonverbal message are congruent, his sincerity quotient his high on this issue. 

When someone's words and body language are in disagreement however - always believe the body language.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 1875: Nadal defeats Djokovic at French Open - Disgust + Anger Expression from Novak

Rafael Nadal just won his record seventh French Open at Roland Garros today Defeating Novak Djokovic in four sets, 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Nadal, who now has 11 Major wins to his credit, prevented Djokovic from becoming the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 from winning four consecutive majors. During the close-up of Novak at the 2:21 - 2:29 segment of this video, a classic but subtle nonverbal expression of disgust can be seen with the addition of some mild anger. Take particular note of the flaring of his nostrils and the tightening of his mid-face, particularly the "mustache area". In addition, Djokovic's eyebrows are drawn together and pulled downwards. There is also a bilateral partial closing of his eyelids - consistent with a "squint" of mild anger.

In the photograph below, which was taken at earlier match at this year's French Open, Djokovic gives a great body language display of thinning of the lips, particular of the upper lip - which is a highly indicative signal of anger. Note how very horizontally straight the lips are in this moment of anger.
