Nonverbal Communication Quiz-Analysis No. 2869: Barack Obama's Executive Action on Immigration Reform, The Rose Garden 30 June 2014 - Sincere or Insincere? (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Regardless of your political beliefs, you should always be in the habit of assessing a leader for sincerity - and ask, "Is he/she being sincere or insincere?" There is a monumental difference between a sincere leader who does not share your belief(s) vs. an insincere leader who presses forth agendas in which they do not believe - yet which may agree with yours.

Today in the Rose Garden, President Obama spoke about his decision to use executive action regarding  immigration reform. Some have inquired as to the President's sincerity here. What do you think?

In this image (at 4:47), Barack Obama juts his jaw (thrust forward) while simultaneously clenching it. His lips also thin out (especially the upper lip) and begin to roll inward - yet because of his momentarily closed teeth, they cannot configure to a full "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR) and thus the tissue adjacent to his lips (particularly below his lower lip) bulges outward (aka Peri-lip Bulge). His eyelids nearly completely close. His eyebrows come together and while his inner (medial) eyebrows are also directed downwards. This set of nonverbals is a cluster highly indicative of anger.

After reviewing the entire video, does President Obama display a high or low Sincerity Quotient? You should be able to cite many specific nonverbals which support your body language diagnosis.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2868: Queen Elizabeth II, Lena Headey, Game of Thrones and Body Language (PHOTOS)

A real Queen and a pretend queen an interesting picture makes. In the foreground of course, is Queen Elizabeth II of the Commonwealth of Nations. Towards the background of this image is Lena Headey - who plays Queen Cersei Lannister in "Game of Thrones".

While the Ms. Headey is displaying a Sincere Smile (Duchenne Smile) - partially closed eyelids, concave-up furrows in her lower eyelids, upward vectored cheek muscles, a relaxed (uncontracted) forehead and only her upper teeth displayed - the real Queen is sporting an expression of Disgust (close-up below). Can you recognize all the nonverbal components of this crucial emotional? On a scale of 1 to 10, her disgust level is about a 7. How skilled are you spotting very subtle body language?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2867: Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal, Ghana and The World Cup - Body Language Tells (PHOTOS)

Despite winning 2-1 against Ghana's National Team, Portugal was knocked out of the World Cup on Thursday (Portugal tied against the U.S. Team 2-2, and the U.S. also beat Ghana 2-1, and while both the U.S and Portugal lost to Germany - Portugal lost by a greater margin, 4-0, while the U.S. was defeated 1-0).

This image of Cristiano Ronaldo was taken after he scored the winning goal against Ghana. It displays Ronaldo in a great body language teaching moment, for he is showing contradictory nonverbal behavior. While his elevated clapping is a very conscious and a universal MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) & Emblem of approval, his mouth and mid-face (though we can see less than half of it) are conveying two negative emotions - primarily that of regret and to a somewhat lesser degree disgust. These facial components are entirely subconscious driven.

Whenever there is a disparity between conscious and subconsciously directed nonverbal signals - it is the subconscious ones which represent the person's true emotions.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2865: John Boehner is Suing Barack Obama - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This past Wednesday, John Boehner announced that he is suing the Barack Obama for abuse of powers and not faithfully executing the office of the Presidency.

Many have inquired of late with regards to the Speaker of U.S. House of Representative's body language. At multiple times, Boehner's mouth rapidly and evanescently pulls up at both corners in what some novices mistake for disgust or regret - and still others confuse it with "duping delight" (Ekman). However this is a facial tic (particular image below is captured from 0:21). Mr. Boehner displays it often and it increases in frequency with his anxiety level. The presence of this facial tic makes other nonverbal signals (such as those associated with the emotions mentioned above) more difficult to discern.

What other body language (e.g. non-tic facial expressions) in this video betray the Speaker's true thought-feelings with regards to suing the President?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2864: Mary Barra asked by Matt Lauer, Can you Run GM and be a good mom too? - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Matt Lauer is taking heat (and deservingly so) for asking whether Mary Barra can be a good mother and run General Motors well. Unfortunately the camera was pointed too much on Lauer - so a full nonverbal analysis of Barra's response for this specific question is not possible. What follows however is a partial analysis of this interview.

At 3:41 Lauer begins, "[lip smack] You're a mom, I mentioned ..."

Barra: "ah hm" [humming]

Lauer: "two kids, you said in an interview not long ago, that your mom, that your kids said are going to hold you accountable for one job."

Barra:  "ah hm" [humming]

Lauer: "And that is being a mom."

Barra: "Correct."

Lauer: "Given the pressures of this job ..."

Barra: "ah hm" [humming]

Lauer: "at General Motors and being a mom, can you do both well?"

In this moment (3:52), Ms. Barra is displaying a partially suppressed sincere smile. There is a high probability she is recalling the conversation with her children which Lauer is  referencing her .... or the thinking of ridiculousness of Lauer mentioning it.

Barra's eyelids are partially closed and she has dynamic concave-up furrows in her lower eyelids - which are both absolute requirements of a sincere smile. Her cheeks are also vectored upward. Note we cannot see any of Barra's teeth. The exposure of teeth is not required during a partial or suppressed sincere smile.

This low resolution image is the first frame of Ms. Barra once the camera is re-directed on her (3:56) after Lauer's parenting question. If we would been able to see her face directly when he was asking this deliberately inflammatory question - it is very likely we would have seen subtle expressions of anger and contempt. However the CEO recovers nicely - and very quickly.

An extended blink (prolonged eyelid closure) - or partial closure can often be seen as part of a contempt or disgust amplifier. It can also be associated with anger and emotional processing (as in, "I can't believe he just asked me that!").

It is very important to note that during the other portions of this interview, Ms. Barra projects a high sincerity quotient and specifically displays no signals of deception

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2863: Gary Oldman's Apology on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" - Sincere or Insincere? - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Critically acclaimed actor Gary Oldman was recently quoted in Playboy making anti-Semitic remarks. He has since apologized and last night on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" he did so once again. But was his apology sincere? A nonverbal analysis yields the answer. Below are three body language tells rolled up into one moment.

During the interview (the video segment has since been removed from YouTube), just as he says, ".... that from my heart, I am, um, profoundly, ah, profoundly sorry ...", Mr. Oldman touches the right side of his chest. The human heart however is on the left - and any person who is being sincere - has a subconscious which intuitively knows this (with no body language training at all). Good actors do as well (especially when using the Stanislavski Method) - yet here Mr. Oldman - although certainly trying to act sincere, was not pulling it off. Rather he was being himself.

In addition Gary Oldman was touching with just the tips of his fingers - not with any portion of his palm. The lack of any palmar touch strongly indicates insincerity.

A third component of this single MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) which betrays his true thought-feelings is the non-dominance of his right hand. Mr. Oldman is left handed - and yet he uses his right hand. This is a very strongly insincere body language gesture - particularly in the context of an apology. Even without this third signal, Gary is being very insincere. However with this third nonverbal - he puts the nail in his own coffin.

Despite the fact that Gary Oldman is a fantastic actor - he is only human. And he is not able to suppress his nonverbal signs. There are many other indicators of insincerity in this video. How many can you see?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2862: Eli Wallach, "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Eli Wallach passed on yesterday. He was 98. Mr. Wallach was a great actor who continued his craft to the years of his long life. He is best known for his roles in "The Magnificent Seven", "The Misfits", "The Godfather Part III", "The Two Jakes" and "The Holiday". He was also known for his role as "Tuco" (aka "The Rat") in "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" - which also provides some excellent nonverbal teaching points.

In this moment, just before the denouement, Tuco's (Wallach's) eyelids open widely. This nonverbal element is a primary component of and an accurate portrayal of the emotion of fear - which of course is expected within the context of this scene. And even though it takes place outside in the sunlight, in such an intense "life and death" moment his pupils would be significantly dilated. No one can voluntarily control their pupil size however. It would have been significantly more realistic if Sergio Leone (the director) would have dilated Wallach's eyes (and the others) medically (using eye drops) in this key scene of the film.

Here, another actor Lee Van Cleef, who plays "Angel Eyes" in the movie, displays eyelids which are partially closed (aka "eyes narrow"). In this cluster context - his eyelid configuration is consistent with mild to moderate levels of anger (not severe anger aka rage). As mentioned with Eli Wallach's eyes - his pupils are also contracted. This nonverbal cluster is not realistic for the body language seen in the scenario of a dramatic "flight, fight or freeze" struggle which is being acted out here.

Clint Eastwood - known as "The Man with No Name" or "Blondie" in the film - also has very narrowed eyes and small pupils - again inconsistent with fear and any realism.

The positioning of the Tuco and Angel Eyes within the clearing of the cemetery (and the fact that Eastwood's character knew that only one of the other men had bullets in his gun) engendered a "darting back and forth" of  both Tuco's and Angel Eyes eye's - which projects low trust, low emotional comfort and a beta mindset. Clint's were locked in on his enemy and didn't move - projecting a high alpha confidence

Rest in peace, Eli. Thank you.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2861: Ronald Reagan and Variations on Thumbs-Up Body Language (PHOTOS)

Ronald Reagan is shown here with a disparity of two different emotions expressed nonverbally. The most obvious one is the universal emblem of the "Thumbs Up" - a Worldwide expression of optimism. This is a very conscious nonverbal.

However when we look at President Reagan's face - we see an entirely different emotional signal; Mr. Reagan's Jaw is clenched (note his dimpled chin muscles), his lips are horizontally configured and very thinned-out. Note also his nostrils are flared. The primary emotion Mr. Reagan is feeling here is Anger and the secondary one is Regret. These facial nonverbal signals are all initiated subconsciously.

Whenever there is a disparity between the nonverbal signals, the ones that are subconsciously generated are truly reflective of what another person is feeling while the consciously originated ones are deceptive.

On a different occasion we see the 40th U.S. President also displaying a thumbs up illustrator. Yet on his face we see a smile with a much higher sincerity quotient.

Here all of Reagan's nonverbal signals are congruent - and thus we know he believes the signal his thumb is sending.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2860: Michelle Obama regarding the First Woman President - What Does She Really Think? (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Monday the first "White House Summit on Working Families" was held. Michelle Obama was asked:

" ... We have Nancy Pelosi, that was up here, we have women at the Supreme Court, and there are many feeling that if we're going to talk about leadership and that's what we're doing here, that a woman president is p-, is, is part of that and what and example that would set for your girls, and for young boys and for, for all of us.

Mrs. Obama: "Absolutely"

Robin Roberts: "Do you foresee that happening and should that, when should  that happen? ....."

The first Lady answered, "That should happen - as soon as possible ...."

Just after Roberts said, "...that a woman president ..." and as she says, "... is p-, is, is part of that and ..."
Mrs. Obama rubs her nose

And while there are other nonverbals present here, this nose rub signals us that Mrs. Obama is in disbelief that this specific subject has been raised.

What other very specific body language do you see displayed in this video?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2859: Cristiano Ronaldo, The World Cup, Portugal vs. USA - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Silvestre Varela of Portugal's National Team scored an equalizer today on a perfect cross from Cristiano Ronaldo. The header came with 25 seconds left in the final minute. This last minute clutch play has kept Portugal alive. Ronaldo and company will face Ghana this Thursday as the US National team goes up against Germany.

Note: Since the original writing of this post, the source video has since been deleted from YouTube.

Earlier in the match just after US Captain, Clint Dempsey scored the go ahead, Ronaldo is captured in this expression (2:58 in the above video).

This close-up shows the Real Madrid forward displaying two primary emotions.

His clenched jaw, horizontal thin lips, peri-lip bulge, inward lip roll, dilated nostrils, and bilateral widely opened eyelids - is a strong nonverbal cluster of anger.

Many body language novices would mistake his mouth asymmetry here for contempt - however it is not - rather it is regret. Can you name the specific features which differentiates these two emotions?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2858: Hope Solo, Domestic Violence, Arrests and Wedding Rings - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Hope Solo, goalkeeper for the Seattle Reign FC and two-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist, was arrested earlier today for alleged domestic violence against her sister and her nephew.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of the recent video interview above (17 April 2014) and sheds some light on probable underlying causes behind her alleged violence.

Many times throughout this video, Hope twists her wedding ring. This is a strong indicator of anxiety - and more specifically within the context of her marriage.

Hope Solo is married to former professional football (American Style) player Jerramy Stevens.

And although Solo's been interviewed many times on national television under more what otherwise would otherwise be more stressful conditions, the dramatic frequency of this recent body language display indicates greater anxiety "beneath the surface" and foreshadows a break-up in her marriage.

There are a multitude of other nonverbals displayed in this video. Which others did you spot?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2857: Barack Obama on Syria, Belief that Syrian opposition could have overthrown Assad with U.S. arms a "fantasy" - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Norah O'Donnell interviewed Barack Obama earlier today. A portion of that interview is included above and a partial nonverbal analysis follows below.

At 0:00.5 Norah O'Donnell begins, "... Would that vacuum exist had we backed the moderate rebel forces in Syria?"

President Obama, answers, "... ah, yes.... I, I, I think th, this notion that somehow there was this ready made, moderate, ah, Syrian force that was able to defeat, ah, al-Assad, is, simply not true, ah ..."

As O'Donnell finishes up her question, and before the President even answers, he displays a brief expression of contempt.

While this is too long in duration to technically qualify as a "Microexpression" - it still is quite evanescent and has the same level of significance.

Note his asymmetrical smile - with Mr. Obama's right corner of his mouth vectored upward.

His right "mustache area" also contracts - as his right nostril flares as well. Additionally, and an amplifier of his contempt is betrayed in his eyelids partially closing - with greater prominence on his right.

At 0:07, further mouth asymmetry is displayed.

Still at 0:07, greater eyelid closure is manifested, particularly on the president's right side.

Even further eyelid closure with the President gazing down to his right (still at 0:07).

This and other eye moment directionals are epiphenomena of different emotional-thoughts. And while they are not 100% predictive - once normed, they can provide significant nonverbal adjunctive diagnosis. President Obama's brain behaves more like a right handed dominant person's (even though he is left handed) - do you know why?

If you're following the World Cup, no doubt you've heard England lost to Uruguay today, 2-1.

The above image of Coleen Rooney - Wayne Rooney's wife (holding their son Klay) is a great nonverbal example of several emotions occurring simultaneously.

Coleen's primary emotion is that of disgust. Her other two emotions (of slightly less magnitude) are that of contempt and regret. Can you differentiate the facial components of these three feelings?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2855: Hillary Clinton, 2016 Presidential Race and Duping Delight - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Hillary Clinton gave a "Town Hall" type interview with Christiane Amanpour yesterday on CNN. At the beginning of this video clip, an audience member asks the former U.S. Secretary of State what she would do about the problem deportation and the splitting up of families.

At 0:26 Hillary begins, "[deep inhale] ...Well even if I don't re-enter politics, I will continue speaking out for comprehensive immigration reform ..."

From about 0:26 - 0:30, Mrs. Clinton displays a "suppressed smile" [red highlight] on the left side of her mouth. This is a form of a duping delight (Ekman), (image below) - for it betrays her full intention to seek the Presidency in 2016.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2854: Dr. Oz Testifies Before Congress - Does He Believe? - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Dr. Mehmet Oz testified before the Senate's Consumer Protection Panel on Tuesday. Senator Claire McCaskill grilled him regarding some of his claims of the effects of dietary and health supplements on his TV show.

Towards the end the video above, it cuts in with Dr. Oz laughing (3:12).

A moment later Senator McCaskill begins to admonish him from using the word "miracle".

Dr. Oz then displays an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR) at 3:16 - this in an effort to suppress his previous laughter. The ILR is very commonly used by the subconscious to suppress strong emotions (positive or negative) when they are deviating significantly from baseline and a need to avoid an emotional crescendo.

Dr. Oz simply doesn't want to laugh as he is being scolded.

A fraction of a second later (still 3:16) Dr. Oz displays a "Tongue Jut". This nonverbal indicates he believes he's been bad by laughing out of context.

Throughout the other portions of this video (which is not inclusive of his entire testimony), while Dr. Oz does display anxiety (normal for context during any testimony) - his sincerity quotient is high and specifically he is not lying. He believes what he is saying.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2852: Cristiano Ronaldo, The 2014 World Cup and Body Language (PHOTO)

Cristiano Ronaldo, a forward for Real Madrid, also captains the Portugal National Team in this year's World Cup. Regarded by many to be the best footballer in the World, he is shown in the image above after Portugal's 4-0 loss to Germany earlier today.

From a nonverbal standpoint, Ronaldo's primary emotion in this moment is one of regret. In the real world, emotions often do not occur in isolation - there are frequently several simultaneous emotions. Cristiano's secondary emotion is one of contempt. Can you spot the specific facial components of both of these? What is his tertiary emotion?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2851: Jerad Miller Interview at Cliven Bundy Ranch Incident - Body Language Warning Signs (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Miller was interviewed by a television station several weeks ago during a standoff at the Cliven Bundy Ranch. During the interview, Miller displayed several disgust nonverbals.

Miller also displayed multiple disgust facial nonverbals.

The following cannot be stressed enough: Those who commit premeditated mass shootings and terrorist acts will chronically display nonverbal signals of contempt and disgust. This is of paramount importance during threat assessment and in similar efforts to prevent this and other violent acts.

This image (from 3:48) shows Miller in a partially suppressed smile (a variation of duping delight) as he slowly rubs his hands and speaks of "... a couple people ..." who would not come for fear they would "... get a little trigger happy ...". This was a lie, the other people were his and his wife's alter egos - which reared their ugly heads a few weeks later in the mass shooting event where he and his wife killed officers Igor Soldo and Alyn Beck as well as a civilian Joseph Wilcox.
