Body Language Analysis No. 3963: Donald Trump regarding James Comey and Loyalty - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier today President Trump and Romanian President Klaus Iohannis held a joint press conference in the Rose Garden. Of course, the focus of the American press was the President's reaction to James Comey's testimony yesterday.

What follows is a portion of the dialog along with a partial nonverbal analysis.

JONATHAN KARL (beginning at 22:03): ... Mr. President, um, I want to get back to James Comey's testimony. You suggested he didn't tell the truth in everything he said. Ah, he did say, under oath, that you told him to let the Flynn, ah, you, you said, you hoped the Flynn investigation - you could let - he could let go of it

DONALD TRUMP (over-talking): I didn't say that.

KARL: So he lied about that?

TRUMP: Well - I didn't say that. I mean, I will tell you, I didn't say that. 

KARL: And, and did he ask you to pledge his loyalty?

TRUMP (over-talking): And there'd be nothing wrong if I did say it according to everybody that I've read today, but I did not say that.

KARL: And, and did he ask for a pledge of loyalty from you? That's another thing he said -

TRUMP: No he did not.

KARL: So he said those things under oath - would you be willing to, speak under oath to, ah, give your version of, of those events?

TRUMP (over-talking): One hundred percent.

KARL: And -

TRUMP (over-talking): I didn't say, "Under oath". I hardly know the man, I'm not going to say, "I want you to pledge allegiance". Who would do that? Who would ask a man to pledge allegiance under oath? I mean, think of it. I hardly know the man. It doesn't make sense. No, I didn't say that and I didn't say the other. 

KARL: So if Robert Mueller wanted to speak with you about that, you'd be willing to talk to him?

TRUMP (over-talking): I'd be glad to tell him exactly what I just told you Jim.  

This particular exchange was a bit bizarre for its dialog alone - for both men misspoke and President Trump misunderstood or worse.  Note that when Johnathan Karl asked, "and did he ask you to pledge his loyalty?" - What he had meant to say was, "Did you ask him (Comey) to pledge his loyalty to you (Trump)? Trump did not catch this crucial error, and Trump simply answered, "No he did not".

Moreover, when Mr. Karl was recounting on the specifics of Mr. Comey's testimony under oath (yesterday to the Senate), President Trump had misunderstood that Mr. Karl was asking about him (Trump) about asking Comey to take an oath of loyalty. This error seems to be than a simple misunderstanding.

There's a specific nonverbal display of the President's which warrants highlighting here - and it's a beta display. 

Beginning at 22:44 and continuing until 22:56, as he said, "... hardly know the man, I'm not going to say, "I want you to pledge allegiance". Who would do that? Who would ask a man to pledge allegiance under oath? I mean, think of it. I hardly know the man. It doesn't make sense ...", Donald Trump held his upper arms very close to his torso, while rapidly moving each of his forearms and hand back and forth, side to side. This is a significantly low confidence display. If he were feeling more confident, Trump would have held his upper arms further out, such that his elbows were 4 - 6 inches (sometimes more) from his torso and also, crucially, he would have slowed down the motion of his arm and hand gestures.

Generally speaking, during alpha behavior displays, the limbs are positioned further away from the body. Conversely, with beta behavior, the limbs are drawn in, giving the body greater protection. And while gesturing too slowly is certainly to be cautioned against, moving too quickly signals anxiety.

Trump's quick and tight arm movement betray his anxiety and low emotional comfort and was also an example of nonverbal leakage - true feelings leaking out through a facade.

Alpha personalities, even though they try to maintain their dominance displays, are only human. They're not always successful at maintaining their personas - and will often slip into moments of beta behavior. The observant among us will catch these nuances and thus discover their opponent's Achilles Heel - giving themselves great advantages.

Summary:

Despite his words, Donald Trump has a low confidence level regarding the "loyalty exchange" he had with James Comey.

Body Language Analysis No. 3962: James Comey's Testimony - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The day of James Comey's long-awaited testimony finally arrived today. From a nonverbal communication perspective, one (of many) quality teaching moments occurred as Senator Mark Warner was questioning the former FBI Director.

What follows is a portion of their dialogue along with a partial body language analysis.

WARNER (continuing at 52:00): Now, you’ve had extensive experience at the Department of Justice and at the FBI. You’ve worked under presidents of both parties. What was it about that meeting that led you to determine that you needed to start putting down a written record?

COMEY: A combination of things, I think — the circumstances, the subject matter and the person I was interacting with. 

Circumstances first: I was alone, ah, with the president of the United States — or the president-elect, soon to be president.  

The subject matter: I was talking about matters that touch on the FBI’s core responsibility and that relate to the president — president-elect personally.  

And then the nature of the person: I was honestly concerned that he might lie about the nature of our meeting, and so I thought it really important to document.  

That combination of things, I’d never experienced before, but it led me to believe I’ve got to write it down, and I’ve got to write it down in a very detailed way.


Beginning at 52:40 until 52:45 as Mr. Comey said, "And then the nature of the person - I was honestly concerned that he might lie about the nature of our meeting...", Comey displayed an extended "Self-Righteous Head Wiggle" (SRHW).

The Self-Righteous Head Wiggle is a side-to-side moving of the head and neck - sometimes there's also a similar accompanying motion of the torso - or even the jaw (mandible). It can vary in duration - on occasion being extremely brief - ergo, a microexpression or near-microexpression - and at other times it's of longer duration. The amplitude and frequency also vary (In this example, Comey's SRHW lasts for about 5 seconds and is of relatively high frequency but low amplitude).

The Self-Righteous Head Wiggle is displayed during moments when the person is feeling high alpha emotions - and particularly high confidence when expressing such strong feelings (thus it's also on occasion referred to as a "High-Confidence Head Wiggle"). There is sometimes an element of accompanying swagger or smugness (although this component is not present here in Comey's display).

On occasion, the SRHW may also be coincident with an additional forward motion during moments when simultaneous arrogance is present. It can also have an accompanying backward motion - when contempt, disgust, and/or disbelief are being felt. However, neither of these variables (or feelings) are present in this segment.

Yet, an additional overlying movement which is seen here - is a repeated shoulder-shrug. In this context, a shrug indicates the thought emotions of: "What choice did I have?" or "What else could I do?"

These nonverbal displays are not able to be captured with still images. Please watch the video several times to appreciate the subtleties of these dynamic nonverbal signals.

Another co-existing expression is seen during 52:42, just after Comey says, "person" - he displays a classic expression of regret (image below).

Summary: James Comey's nonverbal displays during this testimony are indicative of both high confidence and high sincerity. There is no deception present.

Body Language Analysis No. 3961: Mike Rogers' Testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During his testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Wednesday, National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers displayed some telling nonverbal behavior during his back-and-forth with Senator Marco Rubio. Below is some of their dialog followed by a partial nonverbal analysis.

MARCO RUBIO (beginning at 1:12:49): Okay, well then in the interest of time, let me ask both of you - has anyone ever asked you - now or in the past - this administration or any administration - to issue a statement that you knew to be false?

MIKE ROGERS: For me, I stand by my previous statement. I've never been directed to do anything in the course of my three-plus years as director of the National Security Agency -

MARCO RUBIO (over-talking): Not directed, asked.

MIKE ROGERS: - that I felt to be inappropriate, nor have I felt pressure to do so.

MARCO RUBIO: Have you ever been asked to say something that isn't true?

MIKE ROGERS: I stand by my previous statement, sir.

MARCO RUBIO: Director Coats?

DAN COATS: I do likewise.

MARCO RUBIO: Well [moment captured below] let me ask this of everyone on this panel ...

During 1:13:20, just after Senator Rubio says, "Well...", National Security Agency Director, Mike Rogers' eyebrows pull together, while his left eyebrow and the inner (medial) portion of his right eyebrow are vectored downward - and the outer (lateral) portion of his right eyebrow is elevated.

Rogers' lower eyelids also grow tense in this moment. The region above his upper lip and below his nose (aka "mustache area") also display significantly increased tension. His nostrils flare. Rogers' lips take on a characteristically horizontal and thinned configuration.

Mike Rogers is angry. He is also incredulous that he's being questioned. Notice his forehead asymmetry. Along with the lateral portion of his right eyebrow - his right, lateral forehead is also elevating. But the remainder of his forehead is not contracted.


Summary: National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers displayed strong nonverbal signals of both anger and incredulity during his testimony on Wednesday before the Senate Intelligence Committee. While these behaviors do not alone indicate deception, their presence in this context significantly increases the likelihood that Rogers is not being completely truthful.

Body Language Analysis No. 3960: James Comey, Critical Evaluation, and The Side-Eye - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTO)

This recent image of James Comey displays a classic nonverbal grouping aka "Cluster" of signals.
Note that the former FBI Director's head and neck are turned relative to his torso - and yet they are still rotated about 45 degrees from the person at whom he's looking. We have a strong tendency to not "face point" or "body point" directly at people who we:

• Don't like/have strong dislike for
• Don't believe/don't trust
• Don't respect

Thus when we're looking at such individuals - and our torso, head, and neck are only partially turned - our eyes must turn even more laterally to make "eye contact".

Although Comey's eyes are turned to the side, the colloquial/slang of "Side Eye" is more typically used in the context of open contempt and/or deliberate disbelief (not trying to hide their judgement) - and thus their facial expressions are more extreme and different than what is seen in this example.

Notice also that the entire width of both of Comey's eyebrows are vectored downward.

The crucial placement of his thumb and finger - separated by 2-3 cm while holding chin is significant for critical evaluation.

Summary: Taken as a whole, James Comey's nonverbal cluster says he is:

• Critically Evaluating - more specifically, he doesn't like, doesn't trust, and/or disrespects the person whom he's watching
• Highly focused
• On alert/on guard
• Actively and sizing-up the situation
• Deciding on a course of action

Body Language Analysis No. 3959: Vladimir Putin - Megyn Kelly Interview, Part II - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

You say you don't speak Russian? That's okay, Vladimir Putin speaks English (although he pretends he doesn't). His translation earpiece is a ruse, for his near instantaneous nonverbal responses to questions, betray his multilingual skills (and much more).

What follows is a transcript of a portion of the video above, followed by a partial nonverbal analysis.

MEGYN KELLY: There have been questions in America, about Donald Trump's finances. He hasn't released his tax returns. There have been questions about this secret Russian dossier, which he says is fake - but which purports to have blackmail information in it generated by the Russians. There have been questions about communications between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign. All of which has American's asking, 'Do you have something damaging on our president?' "

VLADIMIR PUTIN: Well this is just not a lot of nonsense. Where would we get this information from? Why? Did we have some special relationship with him? We didn't have any relationship at all. There was a time when he used to come to Moscow, but you know I never met with him. We have a lot of Americans who visit us. Right now I think we have representatives from a hundred American companies that have come to Russia. Do you think we're gathering compromising information on all of them right now or something? Are you all - have you all lost your senses over there?

During 9:03, as Megyn Kelly says, "There have been questions in America ...", Putin displays an excellent example of a microexpression of contempt. Did you see it? Watch this several times. We can't say whether his contempt was directed at Megyn Kelly, Donald Trump, or America - but he was absolutely feeling contempt for some or all of these people.

The Tongue Jut, specifically the "Loose Tongue Jut" was a nonverbal signal displayed multiple times by President Putin during this interview. The one shown above was displayed during 9:09 when Megyn Kelly said, "... secret Russian dossier ...".

The Loose Tongue Jut (not to be confused with a tight tongue jut) is a nonverbal signal for the thought-emotions of "I've been bad" or "I've been caught". 

This was accompanied by both an increased frequency and duration of blinking. This dynamic is a highly reliable indicator of anxiety.

The above expression is a cartoonish one of Feigned Incredulity. He makes it as Kelly says, "... says is fake ..." (9:12).  Note that this expression arrives before Megyn Kelly says the word "fake". This is one of many times when Putin's timing was off. And while the expression, in an absolute sense, indicates a pretend act of disbelief, its early-arrival timing does as well.

Another Loose Tongue Jut (9:13) indicating "I've been bad" / "I've been caught" as Megyn Kelly says, "... but which ..."

Despite being a high-level KGB officer - and the fact he's been coached by world class nonverbal experts, Vladimir Putin still commits a grave body language sin of facial touching (as Kelly says, "... purports to have blackmail information in it ..." (9:14 - 9:16). Here manifested as a lip rub/mouth touch - this MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) indicates a high level of anxiety. In this cluster context, this gesture points strongly to deception.

During 9:20, as Ms. Kelly says, "... Trump campaign ...", Putin displays an excellent example of a "Tongue in Cheek" MAP signal. This is a sign of the thought-emotion of "I Just Won" - and conveys a component of suppressed smugness.

From a paralanguage perspective, it's of profound importance to note that Putin never answered Kelly's question of, "Do you have something damaging on our president?". He never said, "No." He danced around the issue. This screams of deception.

Another paralanguage is displayed with Putin saying, "Well this is just not a lot of nonsense" - rather than, "Well this is just a lot of nonsense". Of course could have been a simple mistake on the part of the interpreter (who most probably also has a lot of knowledge of President Putin activities).

Summary: Based on his nonverbal and paralanguage signals during this interview, there is an extremely high probability that Vladimir Putin has a dossier of damaging information regarding Donald Trump.

Body Language Analysis No. 3958: Vladimir Putin interview with Megyn Kelly - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Megyn Kelly recently interviewed Russian President, Vladimir Putin. The video above is but a portion - and it's crammed full of nonverbal tells. Some particularly interesting ones are discussed below.

Beginning at 2:51, Megyn Kelly asks, "President Putin, there, there are reports today, in the American press that, that the Trump Administration took active steps to ease sanctions on, on Russia, almost immediately after Trump took office. Ah, was this possibility ever discussed between the Trump team and your representatives prior to President Trump being inaugurated?"

President Putin displayed multiple hard swallows and other similar signals of a dry mouth/dry throat during this interview. A particularly notable hard swallow occurred during 3:11 - 3:13, as Megyn Kelly finishes her question.

It's extremely common for the throat to become suddenly dry during high anxiety. We subconsciously swallow to stimulate the production and distribution of needed saliva.

During 3:16, just as he speaks the first words of his answer, Vladimir Putin performs a "Butt Adjustment" - wherein he lifts his posterior off of his chair 4-5 centimeters. This dynamic is very strongly indicative of high anxiety.

The Russian President also momentarily closes his eyes and displays an elevated central forehead contraction (CFC). Given the context of his simultaneous neutral mouth display, this cluster is highly correlative with insincerity.

Then Putin displays what is known as an "Ear Screw" (3:17 - 3:18) as he inserts his index finger into his ear canal (external auditory meatus). This nonverbal signal, in the context of his declarative "No" answer, has a very high correlation with deception.

Note, again, another eyelid closure at the same time as an elevated central forehead contraction (insincerity).

A few moments later the camera pans out into the audience. Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, can be seen sitting in the distance in the front row. The above image is included as a reference photo - it was taken at a different time in the interview. Minister Lavrov is third from the left (with glasses).

Beginning at 3:38 Putin is continuing his answer, "... Our ambassador has met someone, and what is an ambassador supposed to do? That's what he gets money for ...".

At 3:45, just as the Putin's interpreter says, "... That's what ...", you will see Sergey Lavrov, also sit up and forward in a Butt Adjustment (High Anxiety Tell) - as well as display a Forward Lip Purse. A forward Lip Purse is a signal of clandestine disagreement and/or a clandestine plan. Minister Lavrov's body language is very bluntly calling out own his leader - Vladimir Putin - in a deception.

What significant paralanguage red flags did President Putin also use?


Summary: Based on the nonverbal and paralanguage tells displayed during this interview, there is a high probability President Putin is being deceptive and that the easing of US Sanctions on Russia were indeed discussed between Donald Trump and/or his surrogates and Vladimir Putin and/or other Russian government officials prior to President Trump's inauguration.

Body Language Analysis No. 3957: Sergei Gorkov, Jared Kushner, and Secret Meetings - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this video, Sergei Gorkov, the Russian Banker (an alleged spy) who met with Jared Kushner in December 2016 (the focus of an FBI investigation) is asked a question by a journalist (Matthew Chance) regarding the nature of his meeting with Kushner.

The White House is on record saying that the two men discussed US-Russian government relations, while Govkov's bank, VneshEconomBank (Russia's state bank aka VEB), has indicated their meeting was one of a private, real estate business nature. VEB has been under US sanctions for about three years as a partial punishment for Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Kushner failed to disclose his meeting with Gorkov in his security vetting.

Immediately after the question, and with very short duration, Gorkov's eyelids open significantly wider than his baseline. This moment is captured in the image immediately above. Most people would label his response as surprise. But Sergey Gorkov was indeed expecting this question. This was an act - albeit a pretty good one. How do we know?

A split second prior, we see Gorkov's eyebrows elevate while, at the same time, his eyelids are briefly closing. This is a very unnatural motion, it's conscious, and is indicative of expectation. That these two tissues, so close in proximity, would simultaneously move in opposite directions, betrays his foreknowledge.

A few seconds later, just before he enters a room, Gorkov displays a tightened mid-face. This is seen particularly well in his "mustache area" and with the flaring of his nostrils. This nonverbal cluster is indicative of disgust for the journalist and/or his line of questioning. His partial eyelid closure, while not required in the expression of this emotion, is in this context, a disgust amplifier.

This image is from an earlier portion of the same video. Note that the entire width of Gorkov's forehead is contracted. This is a common component of anyone's occasional facial expression. Yet when a person's forehead contracts too frequently (which doesn't take much) - it's an extremely reliable indicator of overall insincerity (This is not to say, however, that a relaxed forehead equates with sincerity). During Keri Russell's recent guest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, she exhibited a fantastic example of an often misunderstood nonverbal tell. The Actor was describing her difficult interaction with Bear Grylls - and Keri Russell (beginning at 1:08) said, "... I had to do so fucking much ...".

Immediately after this profanity, during 1:12, the co-star of The Americans displayed a "Tongue Jut" - and more specifically, a "Loose Tongue Jut" (not to be confused with a "Tight Tongue Jut" - which has a very different meaning). This body language moment is captured below.

A loose tongue jut indicates the thought-emotion of "I've been caught" or "I've been bad" (Navarro). When coincident with a sincere smile, laughter, or blushing - it will also transmit a self-deprecating type quality - as is seen this scenario.

It's fascinating to note, that although she's an accomplished actor, when Keri Russell is just being Keri Russell - she is no better at suppressing her nonverbal signals than you or me (or Meryl Streep, Daniel Day-Lewis, etc., etc.).

Before Donald Trump fired James Comey, Senators Patrick Leahy and Al Franken had asked the FBI to investigate Jeff Sessions for possible perjury pertaining to Sessions' alleged undisclosed contact/meetings with the Russian Ambassador, Sergey Kislyak.

The video above, and the discussion below, sheds some needed nonverbal light on Sessions. What follows is analysis:

Beginning at 0:44 in the above video, Jeff Session says, "I never had meetings, with Russian operatives, or Russian intermediaries about the Trump campaign ..."

During 0:46 - 0:47, as he says,"Russian operatives" - Sessions shifts his weight rapidly from side-to-side (to his left, then back to his right). Then, just a few seconds later, during 0:49 - 0:50, as he says, "intermediaries", the US Attorney General elevates quickly up-and-down on his toes.

Both of these nonverbal actions are highly indicative of adrenaline surges which accompany anxiety. However, when viewed in the context of this crucial, high-ramification denial declarative, their presence dramatically increases the probability that deception has occurred.
