Body Language Analysis No. 4274: Ariana Grande, Jimmy Fallon, and Recalling the Manchester Bombing - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Ariana Grande was a guest Tuesday night on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show - where she sang, “No Tears Left To Cry” and talked about her upcoming album - Sweetener (to be released this summer) including songs such as, “R.E.M.,” “Raindrops”, “The Light Is Coming”, and “God Is a Woman.”

Fallon also spoke briefly regarding the Manchester Bombing. You may recall that almost one year ago - on 22 May 2017 - a suicide bomber killed 22 people and injured 512 in the foyer of Manchester Arena following an Ariana Grande concert. What follows is a partial analysis of Grande's nonverbal response.

During 4:57 - 4:59, Ms. Grande rubs her (right) upper arm. This is a very common anxiety signal. When you see this, you can be sure that the subject is NOT one the person wants to discuss.

In a similar Anxiety tell is seen during 5:01 - 5:07,  as Ariana crosses her arms and then rubs her left elbow.

She also breaks eye contact and gazes downward. 

During 5:20 - 5:21, in response to Jimmy Fallon's statement regarding her returning to Manchester to perform a benefit concert, Ariana touches/rubs/covers her lower neck - manubrial (upper sternum) region. This display represents an even higher level of anxiety. It's also a nonverbal signal which commonly foretells the appearance of tears, tear-suppression/"choking-up".

Ms. Grande is still looking down.

Toward the end of this video clip (seen during 5:38 - 5:57, 6:02 - 6:03), the singer puts both of her hands beneath her legs (thighs). This is a strong signal of a Hesitancy to Disclose information. Ariana's body language is screaming, "I don't want to talk about this!"

Summary: Understandably, Ariana Grande's nonverbal behavior strongly indicates she has significant anxiety regarding the Manchester Bombing. Moreover, she absolutely does NOT want to discuss it - and most likely had the understanding that Jimmy Fallon was not going to broach the subject.

Body Language Analysis No. 3948: The Manchester Bomber, Nonverbal Communication, Threat Assessment, and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

The image above (and the cropped close-up below) shows one of the few currently available photos of Salman Abedi - the alleged perpetrator of the recent bombing during at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England. Tragically, 22 victims were killed and at least 120 others were injured.

Note the expression on Abedi's face - it's a mixture of both Contempt and Disgust. The elevated "snarl" appearance on HIS left side (e.g. the well-defined nasolabial fold [the furrow running from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth]), is particularly emblematic of Contempt. His mid-face tightness (in the "mustache area") is consistent with both of these emotions (although also more accentuated on his left - ergo contempt). His "droopy eyelids", while perhaps longstanding (e.g., congenital ptosis) - here serve as an amplifier of contempt and disgust. Abedi's backward head tilt also acts to intensify each of these emotions.

As human beings, we all occasionally feel - and thus display each of these feelings - but hopefully not very often or too intensely.

However, those who make such facial expressions frequently have a dramatically increased likelihood of having impulse control disorder (colloquially known as a "short temper"). Therefore in the context of significant disagreements, these individuals will tend to use physical force and outright violence to solve problems - rather than dialog, diplomacy, and reason.

Moreover, if we evaluate the real-time behavior and/or social media behavior record of the people who perpetrate terrorist activity or mass-shootings - we will observe a dramatic frequency of disgust and contempt - as well as anger (often there exists a mixture of these emotions)

With this in mind, it's not surprising that a senior person at the mosque which Abedi attended (the Manchester Islamic Centre aka Didsbury Mosque) reported that Salman Abedi looked at him with a "face of hate" after the imam gave a sermon denouncing terrorism and preaching against ISIS.

Summary: Careful observation of Nonverbal Behavior plays a crucial role in Threat Assessment and preventing violence. The perpetrator of the 2017 Manchester Bombing, Salman Abedi, is yet another example of an individual who exhibited such body language red flags. And while certainly not all of those who display chronic expressions of anger, contempt, and/or disgust will perpetrate terrorist activity - they will virtually always have impulse control disorder (thus you don't want to date them, hire them, be hired by them, vote for them, etc.).

My deepest condolences for all those who have suffered in this horrific event.

The beginning moments this Ariana Grande guest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! captures a fantastic example of a microexpression of fear superimposed over a subtle expression of fear.

At 0:12, Jimmy Kimmel continues: "... but you put such a dark -"

Ariana Grande: "Yeah."

Kimmel: "...almost blood-purply colored on your lips"

Grande: "Yeah."

Kimmel: "... with the bright red suite."

Grande: "It's a lot, but I think it's appropriate."

Kimmel: "It's fabulous."

In this second image we see another microexpression just before Kimmel says, "... lips ...". This is virtually identical to the example above, except that Ms. Grande's eyes are not opened quite as much (though still wider than her baseline).

The microexpression component is seen with the corners of her mouth pulling backwards twice (it may look like a miniature smile to some) - however it's very short-lived (please watch the video on normal speed and then on half speed to best appreciate this). Superimposed on this evanescent mouth nonverbal - we can see the longer duration change of Ariana's slightly widely opened eyes.

Grande is fearful that her lipstick wasn't the right color.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3381: Ariana Grande, Flirtatious Body Language and the American Music Awards (PHOTOS)

Tonight Ariana Grande won the 2015 American Music Awards Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist. In winning, she bested Taylor Swift and Meghan Trainor.

This image captures Ms. Grande's body language display during her performance of her new song, "Focus" - and it's a very classic flirtatious nonverbal clusters.

Note Ariana is looking back over a raised shoulder (particularly a bare shoulder) with her head tilted slightly downward along with raised eyebrows. Such tilting of the head causes the eyelids to open to a greater degree and therefore it gives them a larger appearance - and bigger eyes are a universal quality of beauty.

Touching her thigh with her fingers is typically not a component of this cluster, however here it acts as a strong amplifier of Ariana's already provocative posing. 

In summary, Ariana Grande's  body language configuration in this moment is extremely flirtatious and strongly engenders protective instincts in most every man who sees it. And if you've been the recipient of this variety of nonverbal behavior - rest assured, the green light has been turned on.

Ariana Grande was a guest last Friday on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.  Early on in her appearance she self-deprecates while admitting "... I'm so nervous ..." (as this was her first appearance speaking on any talk show). What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis highlighting some of the singer-actress's body language.

Emotional processing of what Ariana's intellect knows - but her psyche has yet to fully grasp the significance of (Although she has pretended to be Celine many times - Ms. Grande has not done so during a talk show - especially The Tonight Show). The timing of this nose touch is highly indicative that her Celine Dion imitation was choreographed. 

Ariana's impression of Celine Dion was indeed spot-on - both with her voice and her body language (1:52).

It's profoundly important to note that in the act of mirroring another person's nonverbal idiosyncrasies - the easier it's also to imitate their vocal qualities.
