If you haven't yet heard this is an incredible story of Selena Gomez - take the time to watch this video - it's very inspiring. It's about her need for a kidney transplant (her kidneys were rapidly failing secondary to Lupus). Although none of her family members were compatible as potential organ donors - her best friend and roommate, Francia Raisa - miraculously was a match.
From a nonverbal communication perspective (this image was captured during 5:12 in the above video), note Selena's facial features:
• Elevated Central Forehead Contraction (elevated CFC)
• Inner (medial) eyebrows vectored upward
• Mid-facial tension
• "Sad Mouth" configuration (laterally vectored and down-turned mouth corners)
This is a facial expression we make when we're in:
• Physical Pain
or
• Emotional Pain
But also, we make this same expression when we're feeling physical pain or emotional pain for others, via our empathy.
Regardless of one's prior empathy level, those individuals who experience an extreme emotional/physical painful event, will often undergo a permanent up-regulation of their empathy (although sometimes the opposite may occur). Selena Gomez is a very empathetic person.
In contrast, those individuals with low empathy quotients WILL NOT MAKE THIS EXPRESSION (or they'll display it out-of-context).
