Body Language Analysis No. 4338: Donald Trump, Omarosa, and Wikileaks Emails - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On the same day Donald Trump called Omarosa, "... that Dog" in a Tweet, Ms. Manigault Newman revealed that then-candidate Trump was aware of the hacked emails before WikiLeaks publicly released them in July of 2016 during the Democratic National Convention.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of three crucial moments during an interview Ms. Manigault Newman gave on 14 August 2018 with Katie Tur.

KATIE TUR [continuing at 2:07, over-talking]: ... You say corruption, but do you mean coordination? Anything that Robert Mueller would be interested in whether Donald Trump was coordinating with Russia - 'r he knew about the emails during the campaign - that sort of thing?

OMAROSA MANIGAULT: I think that he should come clean with the American people. I think that he should be honest about what he did during the campaign AND - what he continues to do at the White House.

KATIE TUR: You were instructed, according to your book - to bring up the emails at every point you could at the end of the twen - twenty sixteen campaign?

OMAROSA MANIGAULT [over-talking]: That's, that's correct.

KATIE TUR [over-talking]: Hillary Clinton's emails?

OMAROSA MANIGAULT: Yes. That was our talker. We were to talk -

KATIE TUR [over-talking]: Did Donald Trump know about those emails before they came out?

OMAROSA MANIGAULT: Absolutely Ω

KATIE TUR: He knew about them.

OMAROSA MANIGAULT: Yes

KATIE TUR: He knew what was coming out before WikiLeaks released them

OMAROSA MANIGAULT [over-talking]: Yes §

KATIE TUR: You're saying Donald Trump had a back channel.

OMAROSA MANIGAULT: I didn't say that. You did. But I will say that -

KATIE TUR [over-talking]: How did you know [inaudible] this? 

OMAROSA MANIGAULT: - I am going to expose the corruption that went on in the campaign and in the White House ∆ (tight tongue jut, 2:56). I'm going to continue to blow the whistle on all of this.

During 2:42 (notated in the dialog by the Ω symbol), in her response to Katie Tur's question, "Did Donald Trump know about those emails before they came out?", Omarosa Manigault Newman exhibits a classic Contempt display just after she says, "Absolutely".

Four seconds later, during 2:46 (just after she says, "Yes", notated in the dialog by the § symbol), Ms. Manigault Newman exhibits a very telling combination of Contempt coupled with a Suppressed Smile.

The particular amalgam of:

• Contempt
• Suppressed Smile

... is indicative of Schadenfreude.

Schadenfreude is a German word describing "the experience of pleasure, joy, or self-satisfaction that comes from learning of or witnessing the troubles, failures, or humiliation of another." (Wikipedia)

During 2:56 (notated in the dialog by the ∆ symbol), just after she says, "I am going to expose the corruption that went on in the campaign and in the White House", Ms. Manigault Newman displays a Tight Tongue Jut.

A Tight Tongue Jut (not to be confused with a Loose Tongue Jut or a Wide Open Tongue Jut which have completely different meanings) indicates the thought emotions of:

• Disgust
• Disdain
• Repulsion

While the closing of one's eyelids is not a required component of a tight tongue jut, in this cluster scenario such a dynamic indicates an amplification of her emotions.


SUMMARY: Nonverbal Analysis of Omarosa Manigault Newman during this video interview indicates she believes that then-candidate Donald Trump had foreknowledge of hacked emails released by WikiLeaks. She is being truthful.

Moreover, Ms. Manigault Newman also feels disgust, disdain, repulsion, contempt, and schadenfreude towards President Trump.

Body Language Analysis No. 4257: Mark Zuckerberg Testifies Before The Senate - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday, Facebook's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg testified before the Senate Judiciary and Commerce Committees. What follows is a nonverbal analysis of but two key moments of his five-hour testimony. Included here is a nuancing of a nonverbal signal that most casual observers would conflate - however, their meanings are profoundly different.

SENATOR CRUZ (continuing at 1:18): Well Mr. Zuckerberg, I will say there are - a great many - Americans who I think are deeply concerned that, that Facebook and other tech companies are engaged in a pervasive pattern of bias and political censorship. Ah, There have been numerous instances with Facebook ...

During 1:36, as Senator Cruz says, "... Facebook ...", Mr. Zuckerberg displays a Tight Tongue Jut. A tight tongue signals the thought emotions of:

• Disdain
• Disgust
• Repulsion

With a Tight Tongue Jut, the mouth is barely opened - but the tongue is pushed out through closed lips. It's helpful to think of this as an adult analog to an infant rejecting creamed asparagus.

Notice also his nostril flaring and tension in the region above the upper lip/below the nose (the "mustache area").

In this specific example, it's not possible to differentiate if Mr. Zuckerberg's emotions are directed at the Senator from Texas - or toward the accusations/in defense of the company he co-founded (or both).

Now on a bit further ...

SENATOR CRUZ (continuing at 2:54, over-talking): So, let me, let me, let me ask this question: Are, are you aware of any ad or page that has been taken down from Planned Parenthood?

MR. ZUCKERBERG: Senator, I, I'm not. But let me just - can I [stutter] f- finish?

SENATOR CRUZ: (over-talking) How about moveon.org?

MR. ZUCKERBERG: Sorry?

SENATOR CRUZ: How about moveon.org?

MR. ZUCKERBERG: I'm not specifically aware of those cases.

SENATOR CRUZ: (over-talking) How about any Democratic candidate for office?

MR. ZUCKERBERG: I, I'm not specifically aware. I mean I, I'm, I'm not n-, I'm not sure Ω

During 3:18 - just after Mr. Zuckerberg said, "I, I'm not specifically aware. I mean I, I'm, I'm not n-, I'm not sure" - Mark then displays a Loose Tongue Jut (notated in the dialog by the Ω symbol). A Loose Tongue Jut transmits the thought emotions of:

• "I've been bad"
• "I've been caught"
• "I've done a stupid thing" (Navarro).

Contrast this with the Tight Tongue Jut shown earlier. Note that in the Loose Tongue Jut - as the tongue protrudes out - the mouth is partially opened.

A split second later - also during 3:18 - Mr. Zuckerberg displays an Inward Lip Roll (ILR). An Inward Lip Roll is a signal of the psyche suppressing strong emotions - both from being expressed on the face - but also inwardly from growing even stronger.

What emotion you ask?

Another split-second later (still during 3:18) - we see Mark Zuckerberg's jaw jutting forward (A Jaw Jut) This is secondary to an adrenaline surge accompanying anger. Note also the wrinkling/dimpling on the anterior (front) aspect of his chin.

Body Language Analysis No. 4183: Aly Raisman, Larry Nassar, and USA Gymnastics - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Aly Raisman, a three-time Olympic Gold medalist, addressed Larry Nassar in court last Friday. Nassar was the U.S.A. Gymnastics team physician and has abused hundreds of girls. Thus far, he's been sentenced to 60 years in prison. In addition, Ms. Raisman also leveled criticism at the organization, U.S.A. Gymnastics.

Throughout her statement, Aly Raisman, quite understandably, displayed many examples of contempt, disgust, and anger - and yet the vast majority of these were subtle to mild examples. A profoundly important nonverbal axiom is that, when a person reads a quote, speech, - or in Ms. Raisman's case, a prepared statement - the act of reading (rather than speaking from one's heart - without a script) tends to water-down the accompanying nonverbal displays. They ARE indeed present - but they're just diluted.

One specific nonverbal example display in her statement which was still readily visible was a "Tight Tongue Jut". This is well exemplified during 8:15 - 8:17 (connoted by Ω symbol) just after Aly Raisman says (beginning at 7:58), "Yesterday, USA Gymnastics announced that it was terminating its lease at 'The Ranch' where so many of us were abused. I am glad that it is no longer a national team training site, but USA Gymnastics neglected to mention that they had athletes training there the day they released the statement Ω ... "

A tight tongue jut conveys the thought-emotions of:

• Disdain
• Disgust
• Repulsion

It's helpful to think of the tight tongue jut as, momentarily, the same configuration and emotions as an infant who's rejecting a spoonful of creamed asparagus.

This second image, captured a split second earlier than the first, shows both the early stages of the tight tongue just - along with the clustered hand gesture (Illustrator) of a rhetorical palms-up gesture - nonverbally asking the question of "WTF?"

Summary: Reading a speech, prepared statement, script, etc., - rather than speaking extemporaneously/in an ad lib manner - has the effect of dampening nonverbal displays. While Ms. Raisman does exhibit disgust, disdain, contempt, and repulsion for Larry Nassar - much of her body language is attenuated in the act of reading her statement. For this reason, in some scenarios, it would be wise to consider using bullet points guide us - which allows us to speak in an unscripted, heartfelt, and knowledgeable manner.

Body Language Analysis No. 3251: (REPOSTING) Donald Trump's Response to the question, "Have you ever asked God for Forgiveness?" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Multiple requests for the re-posting of this article (from 2015) have been made in the last several days. It's included here in its entirety (with updated cross-reference links at the end of the article).

Besides belittling John McCain and prisoners of war everywhere, in July 2016 at the Family Leadership Summit, Donald Trump gave us a few other surprises.

When Frank Luntz asked Trump (beginning at 7:28), "Have you ever asked God for forgiveness?", the 2016 Republican presidential candidate initially couldn't answer the question. His circuitous and evasive response detailed how he attended church, loves God, loves his church as well as praise for his (former) pastor, Norman Vincent Peale (who passed twenty-four years ago). Yet Mr. Luntz had to ask him the question again, "But have you ever asked God for forgiveness?"

8:34.3 - During 8:34- 8:35, simultaneous with Luntz's words, "..... God for forgiveness?" - we see a fantastic example of what is known as a "Tongue Jut" - and more specifically a "Tight Tongue Jut" (not to be confused with a Loose Tongue Jut - which has a completely different meaning). This subconsciously initiated nonverbal signal projects the feeling of Disdain, Disgust, and Repulsion.

8:35.2 - Notice how drawn up and tight Trump's mouth opening is as his tongue jut begins. To anyone who has ever fed an infant who doesn't care for his food - the configuration of Donald's mouth and lips are highly reminiscent. Trump's tongue too - much like any baby not wanting his pureed peas seems to be trying to physically push out the unwanted question.

8:35.5 - This series of facial nonverbal signals (in the first three images) can even be associated with levels of physical nausea (In fact, if you try to replicate this facial expression right now - you may even bring on micro-nausea in yourself).

8:36 - An instant later, we see another emotional display - with a jaw jut, nasal flaring, mid-face tightening, dramatic thinning of the lips, partial closure of the eyelids, lower lid tension and a strong lateral vectoring of the corners of his mouth - all indicate a significant level of anger.

Summary: Certainly everyone in the United States (including then Candidate Trump of course) has the legal right to practice or not practice any religion or spirituality. Yet Trump's response is quite interesting - and very telling - for his nonverbal behavior indeed shows great hesitancy - and disdain, disgust, and repulsion for the question - over and above his more obvious verbal balking. Mr. Trump very much does not want to answer the question and moreover, he's angry that it was asked.

Body Language Analysis No. 4096: President Trump Refutes Florida Congresswoman Frederica Wilson's Account Of Call To Soldier’s Widow - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On 4 October 2017, in Niger - near the border of Mali, four American and five Nigerian soldiers were killed by approximately 50 militant extremists with possible links to ISIS. Several soldiers were also injured.

Green Beret Sgt. La David Johnson was one of the American soldiers who was killed along with Staff Sgt. Bryan Black, Staff Sgt. Jeremiah Johnson, and Staff Sgt. Dustin Wright.

On Tuesday, President Trump called Sgt. Johnson's widow, Myeshia. She was in a car with Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (D - FL) and another family member who raised Sgt. Johnson - Ms. Cowanda Jones-Johnson. The call was taken on speaker-phone. According to Representative Wilson, the President said, "Well, I guess he knew what he signed up for, but I guess it still hurt." Ms. Jones-Johnson agreed with Rep. Wilson's recounting, saying "President Trump did disrespect my son and my daughter and also me and my husband."

This morning in the White House, President Trump was asked about the phone call (see the video above). What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of the President's reaction.

JOURNALIST: Mr. President, what did you say to Sargent Johnson's widow on the phone yesterday?

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Didn't say what that congresswoman said - didn't say it at all. She knows it, and sh- now -- is not saying it. I did not say what she said - and - ah, I'd like her to make the statement again because I did not say what she said. I had a very nice conversation, with thee [sic] - woman, with the wife - who is - sounded like a lovely woman. Did not say what the congresswoman said, and - most people aren't too surprised to hear that. 

JOURNALIST: What is the Proof Mr. President?

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Ah, let, let her make her statement again and then you'll find out.

JOURNALIST: She is saying that she - that you said this 

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Okay, let her make her statement again, and then you'll find out.

This image was captured during 0:00 and is a variation of a Tight Tongue Jut - indicating Disdain, Disgust, and Repulsive feelings.

A second later, during 0:01, President Trump displays Disgust.

This "Tongue in Cheek" display during 0:03 indicates the thought-emotions of "I Just Won". It's helpful to think of this as a nonverbal form of Smugness.

Most notably, President Trump kept his arms folded during this entire portion of the meeting. It's very rare for any head of state to fold their arms during an official appearance - perhaps in their office, in private, etc., - but not during a speech, press conference, TV, etc. The only other US President who has done so was Richard Nixon - during his infamous "I am not a crook" press conference - on 17 November 1973, about 9 months prior to his resignation.

While not common for him, the President has been adopting this nonverbal configuration with increasing frequency in the last several months.

It's important to make another distinction - for not all crossed-arms are the same. Notice how tightly-held Donald Trump's upper arms are - positioned close to his torso. Also, crucially, his hands are hidden. This is significant for emotions of Low Confidence, Low Emotional Comfort, and Defensiveness - indicating a classic Beta mindset.

Summary: While President Trump's body language during this exchange does not indicate outright deception - his emotions of defensiveness, low emotional comfort, and low confidence are highly suggestive of it. These emotions have been expressed by the President with increasing frequency - particularly within the last 90 days.

Moreover - Disdain, Disgust, feelings of Repulsion, and Smugness are non-contextual when discussing soldiers lost in combat. In contrast, an emotion we would expect to see here is Empathy - and yet there is none.

On Thursday, 5 October 2017, The New York Times broke a story regarding allegations of decades worth of sexual harassment by Harvey Weinstein. A number of women have made accusations, including Ashley Judd.

On Saturday, 7 October, President Trump was asked about Mr. Weinstein and he responded. Immediately after his answer, the same journalist followed up with comparing Mr. Weinstein situation with the President's own Access Hollywood video scandal. Before she could fully ask her question, the President interrupted her - reiterating his original "locker room" analogy. However, if you know what nonverbal signals to look for - you'll see Trump telegraph his true emotions.

What follows is a partial body language analysis.

During 1:05, the President displays a Tight Tongue Jut - which indicates feelings of Disdain, Disgust, Repulsiveness (Don't confuse this with a Loose Tongue Jut - for it has completely different meaning). It's helpful to think of this microexpression in the context of one dynamic of which we were guilty as infants: When we didn't like our creamed asparagus - we pushed it out with a tongue in a very similar motion.

Immediately thereafter, still during 1:05, President Trump makes a pronounced Jaw Jut (forward thrusting microexpression of the jaw consistent with an adrenaline surge). Simultaneously he retracts his upper lip creating dramatic tension in "Mustache Area". This nonverbal cluster is indicative of a high level of Anger.

In rapid succession, during 1:05 - 1:06, the President displays an Inward Lip Roll (an attempt to suppress strong emotions). With continued Tension in Mustache Area along with the prominent bulging in tissue below Lower Lip demonstrates a combination of Anger with Frustration. These emotions are amplified by his prominent Jaw Clenching and Chin Dimpling.

Just before he says, "That's locker room, that's locker room, yeah", during 1:06, Donald Trump's Inward Lip Roll and Clenched Jaw are rapidly transitioning to a Suppressed Smile. At the same, time the President displays a Head Snap, (a quick twisting and tilting of his head and neck) Bilateral Eyebrow Flash, and a Prolonged Blink. This nonverbal cluster is indicative of High Confidence and Self Righteous emotions.


Summary: President Trump feels dramatic disdain when the subject of the Access Hollywood video is broached. He has deep anger and even hatred for this scandal. However, he also feels that the content and ramifications of the Access Hollywood Video are battles he has already fought and won.

Body Language Analysis No. 4045: Rex Tillerson Regarding Donald Trump, "The President Speaks for Himself" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Two days ago the US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, was a guest on Fox News Sunday. The Secretary made a statement, in which, many people feel he made a clear distinction between the President's statements and values from his own - as well as from traditional and ongoing American values.

What follows is a partial transcript as well as a partial nonverbal analysis of this crucial exchange.

CHRIS WALLACE (beginning at 0:39): Does that make it harder for you to push American values around the World when some foreign leaders question the President's values?

SECRETARY TILLERSON: Ah, Chris we express America's values from the State Department. We represent the American people. We represent America's values, our commitment to freedom, our commitment to equal treatment of people the World over - and that message has never changed.

CHRIS WALLACE: And, when the President gets into the kind of controversy he does and the UN Committee responds the way it does - it seems to say, they, they begin to doubt - our, whether we're living those values.

SECRETARY TILLERSON: I don't believe anyone doubts the American people's values or the commitment of the, * American government, or the government's agencies to advancing those values and defending those values.

CHRIS WALLACE: And, and the President's values?

SECRETARY TILLERSON: The President speaks for himself, Chris.

CHRIS WALLACE: Are you - separating yourself from that, Sir?

SECRETARY TILLERSON: I've spoken, I've made my own comments as to our values as well in a speech I gave to the State Department this past week *

CHRIS WALLACE: Mr. Secretary, thank you. Thanks for coming today. Always a pleasure to talk with you, Sir.

SECRETARY TILLERSON: My pleasure, Chris.

CHRIS WALLACE: Stay Safe.

During 1:13, as Chris Wallace says, "... they begin to doubt - our, whether we're living those values...", Secretary Tillerson looks down and to his right simultaneous with displaying a "Tight Tongue Jut".

A "Tight Tongue Jut" indicates the emotions of distaste, disdain, and disgust.  Looking down and to the right is highly correlative with experiencing the emotions of sadness and regret.

Care must be taken to not confuse a "Tight Tongue Jut" with a "Loose Tongue Jut" - for although they appear somewhat similar, each has a completely different meaning. 

As previously noted (see Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3816: Secretary of State Nominee Rex Tillerson), Secretary Tillerson has a longstanding (tic-like) habit of speaking out of the side of his mouth. It's quite extreme with the Secretary. When such speaking asymmetry occasionally occurs, it's very often secondary to dishonesty. However, because this is, for the Secretary, his baseline idiosyncratic behavior - such a judgment of dishonesty would be erroneous. This makes the microexpression occurring at 1:17 a bit difficult to see. Just before he says, "American", and during its first syllable, the Secretary of State's left corner of his mouth pulls both down and out (laterally) in a unilateral expression of apprehension (with most people, this would be bilateral, but the Secretary's asymmetrical speaking style masks this in a moment of symmetry).

During 1:38, Just after he says, "... I've made my own comments as to our values as well in a speech I gave to the State Department this past week...", Secretary Tillerson displays a single, fixed, long-duration, head nod (aka as an "Alpha Head Nod Affirmation"). This momentary downward tilting of the head and neck (e.g., a single strong nod), while looking past one's suddenly more prominent (and downward vectored) eyebrows - is a signal of finality. It's very alpha and is a nonverbal way of saying, "Don't question me regarding this issue" and "The matter is closed".




You may also note in this same instant the mild-to-moderate tension in the Secretary's "mustache region", mild nostril flaring, and mild central forehead contraction - all of which, when in combination, are congruent with these same sentiments.

Summary: Secretary Tillerson feels distaste, disdain, disgust, regret, sadness, and apprehension - with the notion that, because of President Trump, people from other countries may be doubting whether or not US citizens are collectively living in a manner consistent with traditional American values.

Body Language Analysis No. 4040: James Clapper Regarding Donald Trump's Fitness for Office - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last night, after Donald Trump's rally-speech in Phoenix, James Clapper was a guest on CNN. The former Director of National Intelligence displayed a multitude of body language signals during his interview this interview. What follows is a highlight of just a crucial few of Mr. Clapper's nonverbal moments.

DON LEMON (beginning at 0:07): What did you think of tonight's performance by President Trump?

JAMES CLAPPER: Well, a, Don, it's hard to know where to, where to start, ahhhh, it's just so objectionable on so many, ah, levels. Ahum, you know I toiled in one capacity or another for every President, ah, since and including John F. Kennedy through President Obama and I don't know when I've listened and watched something like this - of a president that I found more, ah, disturbing. Having some understanding of ah, the levers of power that are available to a president if, ah, he chooses to exercise 'em. Ah, I found this, ah, ah, downright scary and, and ah, and disturbing. 

I think, ah, Bakari [Bakari Sellers] is, ah, right on the money though, that th-, this is not a surprise. It, [clears throat] interesting to contrast, ah, last night's ah, teleprompter Trump performance, ah, versus, ah, tonight, which is of course, ah, the real Trump*. Ah, just as, it was in that the unglued impromptu press conference, ah, at Trump Tower. So I, I just find this, ah, [deep inhalation] extremely disturbing.

LEMON: Are you questioning his fitness? 

CLAPPER: Yes, I do. I, I, I, I really ques, question, ah, his, ah, ability to ah, his fitness to be in this office.

During 0:42, as Mr. Clapper says, "... the levers of power that are available to a president if, ah, he chooses to exercise 'em ...", he displays an excellent example of a microexpression of Contempt.

A few seconds later, during 0:52, as the former Director of National Intelligence says, "...  downright scary ...", he displays a second microexpression of contempt.

Just after he says, "... versus, ah, tonight, which is of course, ah, the real Trump ..." (during 1:14), James Clapper displays a Tight Tongue Jut" (be careful not to confuse this with a "Loose Tongue Jut") This too is very rapid - ergo, it's also a type of microexpression. A tight tongue jut is a signal of strong distaste, disgust, and disdain.

During 1:25, just after he says, "... I, I just find this, ah, [deep inhalation] extremely disturbing...", Mr. Clapper displays a nonverbal cluster involving his lower face including:

• Clenched Jaw
• Thinned Lips (almost disappeared)
• Mouth Corners and Cheeks Vectored Far Laterally
• Tissue adjacent to Lips Bulging

This classic grouping of facial findings indicate:

• Anger
• Frustration
• Regret

Summary: James Clapper's nonverbal behavior is highly congruent with his verbal statements. Not only is the former Director of National Intelligence angry and frustrated with Donald Trump, he also has contempt, disdain, and disgust for the President. To detect incongruency is to detect deception - Clapper is being sincere.
