Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2885: 15-year-old American citizen Tariq Khdeir is Beaten - His Reunion with His Mother - Body Language Tells (PHOTOS)

Recently a 15-year-old American citizen, Tariq Khdeir, was allegedly beaten by Israeli law enforcement. The U.S. State Department stated that it was "profoundly troubled by reports that he was severely beaten while in police custody and strongly condemn any excessive use of force", and called for "a speedy, transparent and credible investigation and full accountability for any excessive use of force".

The photo above shows captures a moment shortly after Tariq's reunion with his mother. Two nonverbal signals here are particularly important when evaluating for sincere affection. If true affection is felt for another - head touching - especially when it involves either person's eye or forehead - is indicative of a high level of affection. Many animals display identical behavior. It is in fact, significantly more correlative with affection than a kiss on or near the mouth.

Note also that Tariq's mother's eyes are closed. Forty percent of the mass of the human brain and ninety percent of our sensory input is dedicated to the visual system. When we close our eyes a bit more blood flow and a little more neuro-chemical activity is directed toward the other sixty percent of the brain - including of course the other four senses as well as the brain's cognitive and emotional centers. Thus when we close our eyes during an embrace or a kiss - our psyches are trying to drink in and capture every last drop of affection from the moment.
