Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3414: Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Affection - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Jennifer Lawrence was recently a guest on Watch What Happens Live. When Andy Cohen asked her whether she kissed Liam Hemsworth off-camera, we repeatedly see her look down to her right as well as tilting her head while looking down to her right.

Cohen: It has recently been rumored that you and Liam Hemsworth had some PDA at the Waverly Inn. Have you two ever kissed when the cameras weren't rolling?

Lawrence: Liam and I grew up together. Liam's real hot.

Cohen: I, I agree.

Lawrence:  What would you have done? [Laughing]

Cohen: [overtalking] I would guess.

Lawrence: [continues laughing]

Cohen: I would say yes.

Lawrence: Yeah.

Cohen: Very good.

Lawrence [inaudible]

Cohen: Very good. Ahhhh, I mean, I'd pick Gale over Peeta any day.

Lawrence: I did.

Cohen: Yes, Okay.

Lawrence: [overtaking, laughing] I did at one point.

It's extremely common for a person to look down to their right when they're feeling strong emotions of love, affection, grief, empathy and post-fiero states. Kinesthetic thought-feelings of high intensity (re-living a memory with a significant physical component) also are associated with this same type of eye movement. While by no means a 100% type-phenomena, in this specific example of eye/head/neck movement, it very strongly suggests Jennifer Lawrence had and continues to have sincere affection for Liam Hemsworth.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3377: Holly Holm's post-fight interview after defeating Ronda Rousey (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

After defeating a very highly-favored Ronda Rousey on 15 November 2015, there were a multitude emotions along with the corresponding nonverbal signals displayed by Holly Holm (UFC 193) One of these is highlighted here.

When a person is feeling strong emotions of grief, empathy, affection, post-fiero and love - in addition to kinesthetic thought-feelings - they will very often look down to their right during moments of particularly high intensity. Holly Holm did this repeatedly during this post-fight interview.

Depending on the other nonverbals with which it is clustered, this direction of gaze is very often a signal of sincerity.

Note: The original video has, since the original post, been removed from its online source. The images below however, were captured from this video.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2685: Amber Heard, Johnny Depp Engaged - When They Fell In Love - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Amber Heard and Johnny Depp are engaged. They met on the set of "The Rum Diary", filmed in 2011 and released in October of that same year. Depp and his long-time love of 14 years, Vanessa Paradis, announced their split in June of 2012. Depp and Heard began dating soon afterward.

In the above video, Ms. Heard is interviewed as part of a promotion for the film. There are several nonverbal cues seen here indicating her romantic interest at the time for Johnny Depp.

Dialog summary beginning at 2:02

Interviewer: "And Johnny, Johnny, I know Johnny's a very keen, passionate reader and so are you. Did you have any kind of like sharing book tips?

Heard: "Yeah."

Interviewer: "What's, what's on Johnny's list?

[Looks down to her right with suppressed smile at 2:11]

Heard: "We, we, um, we, we, we have very similar tastes in, in, in literature, poetry."

Interviewer: "What are you reading at the moment?"

Heard: "Ah [Jaw Confessional at 2:19], I am reading 'East of Eden'." [Blush, Suppressed Smile at 2:21]

Interviewer: "Oh, wow! Steinbeck."

Heard: "A classic."

Interviewer: "Yeah."

Heard: "I haven't it read in forever."

Interviewer: "You've read it before?"

Heard: "Yeah, and, and, and, somebody close to me suggested I re-read it and, and, and I'm discovering all sorts of new things." [blush, suppressed smile at 2:33]

Heard is looking down to her right. She does so at multiple strategic times [2:11 - 2:13, 2:19 coincident with jaw confessional and 2:25 - 2:30].

Most right handed people look down to their right during times, of high emotion as well as when referencing the kinesthetic.

2:19 Jaw Confessional, Looking Down to Right, Blush, Suppressed Smile

The "Jaw Confessional" is a body language signal of high sincerity - although all is not revealed in her verbal language. It is seen during moments of a re-living of strong emotional moment such as embarrassment, regret, apology, affection or love. She displays this nonverbal just prior to saying "I am reading 'East of Eden". It is not because she is lying or embarrassed she is reading the classic - it is because Johnny recommended it.

At 2:21 Ms. Heard show us a strongly Suppressed Smile with a Blush.

This cluster combination is so very strong for sexual attraction that it's almost a neon sign.

At 2:33, we see a repeat suppressed smile with Blush.

Amber Heard fell in love on the set of "The Rum Diary" - not the following year when they began dating.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2186:
Paula Broadwell, David Petraeus,
Body Language and the man who would be President ....

Paula Broadwell, the woman who is alleged to have had an extra-marital affair with former CIA Director and four star General David Petraeus, is interviewed here by Jon Stewart.

There are many interesting body language signals in this video. The following are but two examples which involve eye movements as a nonverbal epiphenomenon of thought and emotional processing:

The vast majority of right-handed people (as is Broadwell) will look down to their right when thinking about issues which, for them, have a high emotional tone. This quadrant also correlates highly to kinesthetic issues. Broadwell looks down to her right at numerous times though out this interview regarding Patraeus. In this context, this eye movement is a highly reliable body language signal that Broadwell had, at the very least, a high level of affection for David Patraeus. One of many great examples of Broadwell's quadrant glances is seen at 1:47 when Stewart says, ".... Is he awesome or incredibly awesome?" Had this been a person with whom she had no affection for, Ms. Broadwell would not repeatedly display this very telling nonverbal.

Another interesting body language signal is correlated to a different direction of gaze - up and to the right. At 5:50 - 5:51 and again at 5:54, Paula Broadwell looks to her upper right quadrant just as Stewart presses her on whether or not Petraeus will be running for President one day. A right-handed person, the vast majority of the time, when they look up to the right - is visually constructing a future event or a past event which they had not witnessed. In this case, since Jon Steward was asking her about this highly specific future scenario and Petraeus' personal plans to which precious few would be privy - her two brief glances to this quadrant signifies that, at the time, she believed a future bid for the Presidency was highly likely. It does not prove that she and the General definitely discussed this possibility - but since she was his biographer and perhaps much more - it is highly suggestive Petraeus had Presidential aspirations.

It is important to note, that while these and other eye movements are not 100% reliable, when a person's nonverbal behavior is "normed" and found to be highly correlated - which occurs a very high percentage of the time, they can be highly reliable.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 1773:
Junior Seau's Body Language During His Last Interview

This is a very short, but telling interview segment of Junior Seau filmed approximately 36 hours before his suicide. The dialog is somewhat difficult to hear. However, if we evaluate his body language, we see a "cluster" of several signs of sadness.

First look at Seau's mouth - at no time does it remotely resemble a smile or any positive emotion. While there are no signals of anger, contempt or disgust - his mouth does exhibit subtle-mild sadness. Note the tension in the "mustache area" and the down-turned mouth corners. During the 0:20 - 0:21 clip, Mr. Seau displays an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR). The ILR is one of many nonverbal signals of anxiety - but more specifically, the ILR is a strong signal that the psyche is trying to control a more overt display and crescendo of a negative emotion.

Simultaneous with the ILR, Junior looks with his eyes - down and to HIS right. There is also a similar re-orienting of his head/neck with a turn, rotation and flexion in this same inferior-right quadrant. Looking in this quadrant, particularly with the eyes as well as the head/neck - is highly consistent with negative emotions, especially sadness.

Secret # 1709: Peyton Manning's Agent does Not Fully Believe

A third nonverbal occurring at the same time as the ILR and the down-and-right gaze is a bilateral eyelid closure. This "extended blinking" is indicative of the emotional mind trying to "block out" or erase images/ideas/feelings. We all do this much more frequently than we believe. Our words are often watered down, but this is a strong signal of emotional processing and trying to digest negative feelings.

Junior's central forehead is contracted during this entire segment (note the lateral portions are relaxed). When this central forehead nonverbal is displayed in the context of a mouth expressing sadness or fear - either emotional or physical pain (or both) are always present. The pain may be directly experienced or indirectly felt via empathy.

In short, Junior Seau displays a concentrated nonverbal cluster of sadness in this short interview just before his death.

My sincere condolences to Junior Seau's Family and Friends.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 1709:
Peyton Manning's Agent Does Not Fully Believe

Tom Condon, a "super-agent" in the NFL world, has significant doubts as to whether Peyton Manning is healthy enough, fully healed and able to fill his new roll as starting quarterback with the Denver Broncos. He didn't say this with his words - but his body language gave us a view into his real feelings.

Just after Charlie Rose asked Condon about Peyton Manning, the agent displays a brief (just a bit longer than a microexpression) Inward Lip Roll (ILR) at the 3:46 mark. This is a very reliable signal of anxiety - and more specifically, a sign of "holding in" negative emotion.

Mr. Condon also looked down and to his right when discussing Peyton Manning and his health. Looking in this right-lower quadrant, has a significant correlation with highly emotional issues - when the speaker is right handed. Tom Condon cares about his client, but he also has significant emotional concern here. I'm not saying he's lying, but Condon's gut is telling him that Peyton's injury may prevent him from the expected level of performance - he's worried.

Secret # 171: A Subtle Sign of Sadness

Secret # 1499: Bill Clinton's Empathy for Eric Fehrnstrom and Mitt Romney - What's your Sincerity Quotient?

Incredulity is displayed by Condon's left eyebrow and forehead elevation. This nonverbal is easy to see just after Mr. Rose poses his question - during the 3:51 - 3:55 segment. Also seen at the 3:51 mark, Mr. Condon displays an extended (much longer than a normal blink) bilateral eyelid closure - and in this context it's an indicator that he is psychologically wanting to "escape" from the question and/or issue and block them from his mind.

Notice also that Mr. Condon never answered Charlie Rose's question. He spoke about Peyton's commitment, how hard he's working, other people's assessment of Manning's health, etc. - but he never said anything definitive. Condon sounded like a politician here. Contrasting his body language and verbal tone of excitement to other parts of the conversation e.g., when discussing (with a good "social smile") Andrew Luck going to the Indianapolis Colts or Robert Griffin (even Joking) to the Redskins - contrasts greatly compared with the discussion of Manning. We can see the hesitancy in his face and hear it in his voice.

Condon was glad to have the interview end - for when Charlie Rose said, "It's going to be a great season...", (4:26 mark) is when we see the agent's face change and six components of a sincere smile quickly emerge - partial closure of the eyelids, a concave-up furrow in the lower lids, a trace lowering of the eyebrows, a relaxed forehead,  upward pulling cheeks and a mouth smile with only his upper teeth visible.

Negotiation Body Language Secret # 617:
Ginger White and Herman Cain

Herman Cain's latest accuser, Ms. Ginger White, displays signals of emotional pain, sadness and anxiety throughout the duration of this approximately 90 second video. Ms. White's central forehead is contracted the entire time with simultaneous elevation of her inner (medial) eyebrows. Along with her continual frown and partially closed eyelids, this is a classic nonverbal cluster consistent with emotional or physical pain. Ms. White's constant "wringing" of her hands is a clear indicator of anxiety. She also looks often down and to her right through out the interview. The vast majority of the time, during highly emotional moments/conversations, right handed people will look to this quadrant (I don't know Ms. White's handedness). At the very end of this clip, she closes her eyes in an "extended blink" - a classic blocking behavior (trying to block it out of her mind) when she says, ".....it's really not been fun." She finishes the interview with a hard swallow (anxiety indicator). The Body language signals we see here indicate emotional pain (constant), sadness (constant) and anxiety - in this context indicates Ginger White is probably telling the truth (very high confidence index). Moreover, at no time did her body language and her words contradict each other - another strong signal of honesty. (See Body Language Secret # 731: Sharon Bialek isn't Telling the Whole Truth).
