Body Language Analysis No. 4287: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle - Why Do We Kiss with Our Eyes' Closed (most of the time) - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

You may be surprise to know that a healthy person's sensory input is 90% visual. The remaining 10% is essentially "shared" by the other four senses - touch, taste, hearing, and smell. Moreover - 40% of the mass of the human brain is dedicated to vision.

When we close our eyes, a momentary slight re-adjustment of neurologic activity and blood flow occurs - with a bit less in the visual areas of the brain - and a little more in the other regions. This subtle blood flow dynamic brings with it a significant relative shift in oxygen, nutrients, and further increased neurological activity to the remaining 60% of the brain. It follows then, that the other four senses experience an up-regulation of sensitivity. Think about this phenomenon for a moment. We close our eyes when we taste chocolate cake - when we smell a flower - when we are straining to listen to a faint sound. And when in dim light - our tactile sensitivity immediately increase.

But not only do these other four senses become more perceptive - our cognitive focus also increases - and our emotions become more intense.

When sincere affection is present, the vast majority of the time, when we kiss or hug another person (or even when we kiss or hug an animal) - we close our eyes.

SUMMARY: Closing our eyes temporarily amplifies our other senses, our cognition - and in the case of a kiss or hug, our feelings. This facilitates us to more fully drink-in every ounce of emotion - and be entirely in the moment. Thus, closing one's eyes in these scenarios facilitates a natural form of positive biofeedback.

Congratulations to Meghan and Harry - may you have many years of joy, health, and love.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 1833:
Costa Concordia & Crisis Management
Salvaging a Ship and Public Relations

The President of Titan Salvage, Rich Habib, is seen on this video Clip during 0:23 - 0:38 discussing the salvage operations of the Cruise Ship, Costa Concordia. If you were Titan Salvage's (or its parent corporation, Crowley Maritime) Chief Communications Officer or the firm/person who manage their public relations - how would you evaluate this segment? If you could, would you want a "do-over"? What emotions are displayed by Habib's arm/hand positions? His forehead? His mouth? His head movements? His eyes? What are your conclusions as to what Mr. Habib was thinking-feeling during this video segment of the press conference? Would you pick him to serve on your jury?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 1816:
Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s Contempt &
Mary Richardson Kennedy's Social Smile

In this photo of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his late Wife, Mary Richardson Kennedy, neither of them is wearing a sincere smile. While Mary displays a good social smile, Robert Kennedy Jr.'s face is highly consistent with contempt. We cannot say for whom this emotion is directed. Regardless of what he may have said immediately after or before this image was taken, whenever the body language and the verbal language are in disagreement, the nonverbal is always indicative of what the emotional brain is feeling-thinking.

Nonverbal Communication Exercise # 2012: Got Empathy?
An Appeal to Asma al-Assad
Diplomacy through Unconventional Channels

In this video graphic video, produced by the Huberta von Voss-Wittig, wife of Germany's United Nations Ambassador (Peter Wittig) and Sheilia Lyall Grant, wife of the United Kingdom's Ambassador (Mark Lyall Grant), they made an open and unconventional appeal to Asma al-Assad (wife of Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad) to assert herself and help stop the Syrian Government's violence towards its own people.

After watching it, were you aware that your central forehead muscles were contracting? This specific nonverbal is expressed whenever pain is experienced - emotional or physical - either directly or via empathy.

Were you aware that your head & neck pulled backwards, away from the video?

Was your real-time awareness of your emotional mind acute enough so that your conscious mind knew when your mouth, lips and teeth pulled back in a classic fear expression?

Or when the platysma muscle on your neck tightened like a tent (also classic of fear)?

Did you have any conscious control of your hands as they reached up to cover your mouth? - a classic display of empathy.

I doubt it.

Almost no one is aware of their emotions in real-time. It's nearly a contradiction to the nature of emotions. Body Language is the science of emotions and how these are expressed nonverbally - in real-time - on the face and body. You watched this video presumably because you have an interest in nonverbal communication - and yet you still were unaware of what you were doing while witnessing the content of the video. Indeed, this is true if you had read these/are reading these paragraphs prior to watching it.

We all leak emotions and our true feelings through many nonverbal channels. We think we are better than the next person at controlling these expressions, and even if that's true - we still are as transparent as glass.

Romance, Dating & Marriage Body Language Secret # 1529:
What the Pupils Do When there is Sexual Attraction

This is an interesting video from a couple months ago. It talks about the behavior of the pupils during certain emotions and cogitation. When you're physically attracted to someone - your pupils will dilate. Parts of the other person's subconscious will somehow detect this and also dilate. This sets up a nonverbal positive feedback loop of which we're not aware of consciously. Demonstrated 40 years ago, there is still a big mystery here. Although we know this absolutely takes place - we can't explain how. It's extraordinary to think the subconsciousnesses of two people are communicating ... and collaborating without their respective consciousnesses "approving" or even being aware. Via this pupillary feedback loop - attraction begets attraction. Thus, even if initially you don't find someone necessarily sexually appealing, after an encounter you may find yourself drawn to them and not know why. This is one body language mechanism which explains this phenomenon.

Negotiation Nonverbal Communication Secret # 1255:
Newt's Skepticism

Newt Gingrich is shown here in clear incredulity. Perhaps it's because he only won his home state of Georgia on Super Tuesday. What most people see when they first look at this photo, is the former Speaker's forehead contracted and elevated on his right side. This is a classic signal of disbelief. But what is less obvious - is Mr. Gingrich's right eye is opened widely while his left eye is slightly closed. This asymmetrical eyelid configuration is also a classic body language tell consistent with a skeptical emotional tone. Often these signs are much more subtle than Newt is showing us - but if others are displaying these nonverbals, disbelief is absolutely present - despite what their words may be saying.

Negotiation Body Language Secret # 593:
When Disparity exists between Face and Hands -
What to Believe?

When you see contradictory Body Language signals - how should this influence your interpretation? Here, Texas Governor Rick Perry gives us the "Thumbs Up" - which in the many countries and his native U.S. is a universal gesture of optimism during the recent CNN Western Republican Presidential Debate in Las Vegas, Nevada. His face however, belies his real feelings (at this moment). His mid and lower face are significantly tightened. Specifically, his lips are thinned and stretched laterally (a signal of anger) while also displaying a slight inward lip roll (anxiety-anger and actively focusing on controlling this). Perry's mouth/lip signs are being subconsciously controlled, while his thumb display is quite conscious. Certainly, debating in a nationally televised political event with worthy opponents is no easy task. I don't know where any politician gets their thick skins; but obviously these nonverbal signals are not congruent. The subconsciously dictated behavior always reflect the person's true emotional state in real-time. Thus, it is extremely difficult to fake one emotion when you truly feel another.

Negotiation Secret # 95:
Disparity and Body Language Signals of
Muammar al-Gadhafi

Muammar al-Gadhafi, the current leader of Libya - at least for the next few hours, can be seen here giving the "Thumbs up" emblem - which in the majority of countries and regions of the World is a clear and unequivocal  indication of positive emotions. But this does not tell the whole story. Like most leaders (or those in leadership positions), Muammar is fairly skilled at disguising his true feelings; but what is covered up in one area will leak out in another.  Gadhafi's face displays mild-to-moderate levels of Contempt. The left side of his mouth is elevated and his lip is curled.  The "mustache" area is also tightened and his left nostril is also dilated. These are all clear  indications of Contempt. Whenever a positive gesture (here thumbs up) is displayed along with a negative expression (contempt), it is the negative one which indicates the true emotional state.
