Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3414: Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Affection - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Jennifer Lawrence was recently a guest on Watch What Happens Live. When Andy Cohen asked her whether she kissed Liam Hemsworth off-camera, we repeatedly see her look down to her right as well as tilting her head while looking down to her right. 

Cohen: It has recently been rumored that you and Liam Hemsworth had some PDA at the Waverly Inn. Have you two ever kissed when the cameras weren't rolling?

Lawrence: Liam and I grew up together. Liam's real hot.

Cohen: I, I agree.

Lawrence:  What would you have done? [Laughing]

Cohen: [overtalking] I would guess.

Lawrence: [continues laughing]

Cohen: I would say yes.

Lawrence: Yeah.

Cohen: Very good.

Lawrence [inaudible]

Cohen: Very good. Ahhhh, I mean, I'd pick Gale over Peeta any day.

Lawrence: I did.

Cohen: Yes, Okay.

It's extremely common for a person to look down to their right when they're feeling strong emotions of love, affection, grief, empathy and post-fiero states. Kinesthetic thought-feelings of high intensity (re-living a memory with a significant physical component) also are associated with this same type of eye movement. While by no means a 100% type-phenomena, in this specific example of eye/head/neck movement, it very strongly suggests Jennifer Lawrence had and continues to have sincere affection for Liam Hemsworth.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3376: Liam Hemsworth, The Hunger Games and "Honest Anxiety" - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Liam Hemsworth carried Jennifer Lawrence's purse on The Great Wall of China - and you may find that part of this video entertaining. Yet what's more instructive, is to watch a professional actor such as Hemsworth - who is paid well to suspend our disbelief (and who's rather good at it) - when he's just being himself. That is to say, even those who are skilled at acting-lying, when they're back in their own skin, just being themselves - their body language projects their sincere feelings (e.g. they can't deceive any better than average).

At the beginning of the video Jimmy Kimmel says: "So this is the ah .... fourth now, and the most significantly, final time, you'll be traveling the World promoting The Hunger Games."

Hemsworth: "This is the last one."

Kimmel: "Is it bitter-sweet for you?"

Hemsworth: "Yeah, it is. Yeah I mean it's. You know, it's, it's, it's the end of a, a great journey and I think we all had a good time. But ah, I think we're just sad not to tour the World together. I think that's, that's one of the funnest parts of all because we're such good friends."

During the 0:11 to 0:15 segment we see Liam Hemsworth scratch/rub behind his right ear, first with his index finger (forefinger) and then with two fingers. 

This rubbing/scratching on the "bump" behind the right ear (the mastoid process) is indicative of "honest anxiety". Said another way, this nonverbal signal transmits anxiety and quite importantly has a very low likelihood of associated deception. 

Therefore in this specific example, Hemsworth's verbal message is very congruent with his nonverbal signal (as well as with his paralanguage) - so in this context, Hemsworth has a high sincerity quotient.

There is a myriad of other nonverbal signals in this video - how many did you see? What if Hemsworth were scratching/rubbing his ear (rather than behind it) - what would that signify? In front of his ear?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3242: Jennifer Lawrence, Singing Cher, Liam Hemsworth and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Jennifer Lawrence was a guest on Conan O'Brien yesterday promoting the latest film in the Hunger Games series (Mockingjay, Part II).

During her interview Ms. Lawrence sings a bit of Cher's song, Believe. Liam Hemsworth's reaction provides a great example of a particular nonverbal behavior cluster.

As Jennifer starts to sing, Liam begins to blush and continues blushing heavily throughout much of this video. People who blush more often, deeper and/or for longer durations - have more sincere overall personality profiles. What's particularly noteworthy in this scenario is Hemsworth is blushing for another person - rather than himself. This additionally indicates his empathy quotient is relatively high and while of course we can be embarrassed for people whom we don't know (or are barely acquainted) - we tend to blush more for those with whom we have affection (of course such affection may be platonic or romantic).

These following four very common nonverbal signals often co-existent with facial blushing and are captured in these two moments:

1. Clasping and often rubbing together of the hands (one type of a MAP [Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier])

2. Dorsiflexion of the feet (rocking up on the heels)


Both of these body language displays are general indicators of anxiety, yet in this context they more specifically act as Empathetic Embarrassment Amplifiers. 

Here we see two additional nonverbal signs that further accentuate his feelings of embarrassment for JLaw-Katniss:

4. Rubbing of the anterior neck






Thus in this brief video, by evaluating the Aussie Actor's body language, we can tell two things with a high degree of confidence - Liam Hemsworth's overall sincerity level as well as his empathy quotient are both upstanding. In addition (and not surprisingly) Hemsworth has significant affection for Jennifer Lawrence.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 1866: Miley Cyrus & Liam Hemsworth are Engaged - An Affection-Love Sincerity Signal

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are engaged. The two have been dating since June 2009 when the couple met during the filming of "The Last Song". Miley's palmar touch of Liam is a signal of sincere affection - particularly on the Aussie's Chest - and even more so over his heart. In contrast, when the palm of the hand ceases to make consistent contact - and only the fingers (or later just the tips of the fingers) are touching - it is a solid body language signal of waning love. While the palm-touching contact does not predict longevity of a relationship - it is a very strong sign of sincere affection and love.

Negotiation Body Language Secret # 925: Hemsworth's False Smile is Worthless

At first glace to the untrained eye, Liam Hemsworth's mouth looks as if he's trying to squeeze out a smile at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards. If you look carefully though, you'll notice his "mustache area" is slightly tensed and his upper lip is mildly stretched and thinned as well. Hemsworth's nostrils are flared too. His eyelids are partially closed, but not in the sincere smile manner. If his lids were closed as a result of a true, felt smile - we would see the classic, concave-down furrow nonverbal sign in Hemsworth's lower lids (see Secret #921: Spotting Giants' Sincerity). This young actor is not smiling sincerely at all, moreover his attempt at a social smile is also poor. Liam's emotions are disgust (best exemplified by his flared nostrils) and anger (his out-of-context Clint Eastwood-like eyelid squint as well as his thinned upper lip).

Anyone can spot severe anger or disgust. How skilled are you at picking out moderate or subtle examples? Miss them at your own risk.
