Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3709: Kate Middleton - The face you make when you’re married to a prince but you meet Justin Trudeau - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Some on social media have cleverly captioned this picture, "The face you make when you’re married to a prince but you meet Justin Trudeau".

Kate Middleton's body language speaks volumes. When we thin-slicing her nonverbal signals we see:

1. Her smile is sincere
2. Her face is blushing
3. She's performing (initiating) a HABE gesture (Hair Adjustment Behind Ear)
4. Her head and neck are flexed forward - as well as side-tilted toward the Canadian Prime Minister
5. She's locked in eye contact with Justin Trudeau

Despite standing next to Prince William, Kate's body language cluster in this moment is strongly indicative of her sincere attraction for Justin. Of course, like the rest of us, she's only human - and also, like the rest of us, simply being physically attracted to another person does not at all mean she will act on this feeling. Yet there's no denying she finds Mr. Trudeau alluring.

The next time you're in Justin Trudeau's shoes - and on the receiving end of similar nonverbal behavior - you can be assured your onlooker finds you sexually attractive. And while, as we see here, it may be quite innocent - it may also just as likely be quite flirtatious.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3174: Prince William & Kate Middleton welcome their Princess - Body Language Tells (PHOTOS)

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcomed their second child today. The princess, who is yet unnamed (or at least to the public as yet), is fourth-in-line to the throne.

From a body language perspective, a rarely discussed nonverbal tell is displayed here - times two.

While a "Jaw Jut" is most commonly a signal of anger, aggression and even potential physical violence - when it's clustered with other nonverbal signals - it has a completely different meaning.

As a written and/or spoken language analog, take for example the word "hot" - this word may indicate an attractive woman, a popular news subject, the spiciness of a pepper or the temperature on a summer day. These are examples of verbal homonyms. They are spelled the same and pronounced the same - yet have four completely different meanings. A twelve year-old, upon hearing four different sentences will easily discern their four respective and very different definitions. Nonverbal signals have similar communicative qualities - and thus have very different meanings depending upon the other body language signals with which they are "clustered" (those signs displayed simultaneously or nearly so) - e.g., "Nonverbal Homonyms".

Note Prince William's and Kate Middleton's upper face - each have relaxed foreheads, partially closed eyelids, concave-up furrows in their lower eyelids and upward-vectored cheek muscles - all crucial components of sincere smiles.

Now look at their jaws - both are directed forward - Kate's a fair amount more so (had the image been captured either 1/4 second earlier or later, it may very well be William's jaw jutted to a greater degree). Clustered with their upper and mid-facial sincere smiles their jaw jutting indicates pride. The royal couple are proud (and joyous) parents.

Notice no teeth are visible - surprising to many, exposure of teeth is not a required component of a Duchenne [sincere] smile.

What other valuable body language tell is being displayed in this moment which is highly applicable in your every-day? What is its specific meaning?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2494:
Prince William Interview on Fatherhood and Baby George
Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Prince William is interviewed in the above video regarding fatherhood and baby George. The following are but a small fraction of the body language signals he displayed. Keep in mind that the Prince is RIGHT-hand dominant.

This image was captured at 2:10 and shows the Prince as he says, "...and I don't like fuss ...". A clear expression of contempt is captured here which is a bit longer in duration than a microexpression.

In addition at this moment, note the Prince is looking down to his right. During moments of deep emotion (as well as kinesthetically driven thoughts), it is very common for the vast majority of RIGHT-handed people to look to this quadrant.

During this moment of remembering Prince Harry and himself as children, Prince William is displaying a common eye movement finding of Auditory Recall for 90% or more of LEFT-hand dominant people - looking directly lateral to the right
(at 2:53 - 2:54). The opposite is true for those who are RIGHT-handed. We would expect William to thus look directly to HIS LEFT if he's recalling a sound/voice of the past since he is RIGHT-handed - yet he is not.

A short moment later (2:55), the Prince looks up to his right - which is the quadrant the vast majority of LEFT-handers look to during moments of Visual Recall. Yet William is looking to this quadrant despite being RIGHT-handed.

Care must be taken when interpreting eye movements and their nonverbal meanings. Such body language typically occurs very briefly and in rapid succession with other eye movements. It is also not 100% accurate - however it's reliability is dramatically improved upon once a person has been carefully "normed" for baseline behavior. These eye movement findings should be used in conjunction with other nonverbals to increase their reliability. In two of the three examples sited above, William is looking in the mirror-image opposite direction than what would be expected for a RIGHT-handed person. One possible reason for this observation is that William is one of those (in the minority) who does not fit the typical and expected pattern of eye-movement seen in most people. What is another possible conclusion for these nonverbal observations?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2468:
Princess Kate, Prince William & a New Baby Boy -
Body Language, Rapport & Saving Face (Video, Photo)

The World got a glimpse of the U.K.'s Royal Baby today. Princess Catherine and Prince William carried forth their new born son and very possible future King from St. Mary's Hospital in London for the rest of us to see. When a reporter asked a question (inaudible but very possibly regarding the newborn's name), William responded with feigned laughter and then said, "Wait and see means wait and see". In between his fake funny and his spoken words, the Prince tilts his head to his right (slightly away from the questioner), configures his mouth in what is a mild fear configuration and inhales through closed and mildly clenched teeth while making a slight hissing sound.

This is a type of "low level fear" expression indicates that someone (either the speaker or the listener) has just crossed over a line of acceptable behavior or an outcome has occurred which may have some unpleasant/unwanted ramifications. It is not a full-on fear expression by any means. If it had been even a mild nonverbal signal for true fear, the neck would never have been tilted to one side, the eyes would be opened wider than baseline (here they are partially closed) and the corners of the mouth would be pulled tighter laterally with an added downward vector.

This nonverbal indicates a subconscious desire to "save face" - either for oneself or the other person while still communicating that a faux pas has been committed or a bad outcome has been obtained. This nonverbal expression engenders rapport and William certainly uses it to his advantage here.

Though it is not the case here, this head tilt, low level fear expression may be seen coexistent with a Rationalization, Rapport, Empathy Expression (R2E2) and in such a setting it signifies an asking of permission and empathy.

What other very telling body language did the royal couple display in this short video?

Blessings to a Mother, Father and a beautiful new life.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2348:
Prince William, Alpha Personalities & Body Language

A helicopter pilot in the Royal Air Force Search and Rescue Force and soon to be father - Prince William is shown in the above video (0:05 - 0:06) and in the images below in a "Lip Purse" (Specifically this is a symmetrical and loose sub-type). This nonverbal display is very commonly seen in an alpha personalities - or scenarios where the person displaying this expression is an alpha - relative to the people in the immediate vicinity. It's one body language tell which signals clandestine disagreement - where little or no opposition is voiced, but a difference of opinion with the action being seen or spoken by another party is very much being felt. Moreover those expressing the loose, symmetrical lip purse (here Prince William) have the means to carry off their plan (and will do so clandestinely) and have high degree of confidence that they will succeed or the other person's plan of action will fail.

The Duke of Cambridge is probably feeling this emotion towards the camera crew or other press involved in filming/making of this documentary (soon to be aired by the BBC). Yet this expression, and important variations of it, are oft displayed but missed - in the board room, in the court room, in the exam room, in negotiations and on the sales floor - and their ramifications and thus the next best move goes unrecognized and uninitiated.

Most people commit the equivalent of "stumbling in the dark" when it comes to body language. They "give away" and overlook terabytes of valuable nonverbal information. Have you tripped lately and not even know it?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 1859:
The Prince is Angry at the Queen's Jubilee

Prince William is a good bit unhappy at the moment of this photo. It was taken yesterday at the festivities for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. While Kate is sporting a good social smile, note the Prince's inward lip roll. The "ILR" is a lip configuration wherein the lips are rolled inward and gently bitten/compressed together between one's teeth. It's a strong body language signal of increased anxiety (and a common expression for him). More specifically it is a sign the psyche is trying to control-suppress a more outward display of negative emotions - usually anger.

Take note of the Prince's hands as well. They are in tight fists. When there is tension in the mouth and mid-face area, as Wills' so clearly exemplifies, it is extremely commonly mirrored in the hands. Conversely, when the face is joyful and relaxed - so are the hands. The next time you're angry, see what your hands are doing - most likely they will be tense. If care is taken to relax them, it becomes much easier to do the same with your face.

William's head is turned slight to his right and down-turned - not looking directly at the person(s) of his discontent - thus his eyes are gazing left. We often tend to not look directly at someone we don't like, don't respect or don't believe/trust.

I'm certainly not aware of all possible princely protocol; however it's a safe bet that royal etiquette does NOT include walking in front of one's wife. This is another nonverbal signal of anger, anxiety and not being "in the moment". The Prince is not self-aware. Emily Post wouldn't approve either.

Negotiation Body Language Secret # 392:
Christmas Cheer -
Kate Middleton's and Prince William's Suppressed Smiles

This photo of Prince William, Prince Charles and Kate Middleton (Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge) attending Christmas Day services at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Norfolk, Sandringham, shows both William and Kate with different mouth configurations, yet with similar eyes. The newly weds both are wearing suppressed smiles. Most people don't realize that a sincere, felt smile is not present unless a characteristic appearance of the eyes occur (Ekman). In order for a smile to be true, there must always be a dynamic and partial eyelid closure. And yet it is not this simple....

Some will tell you to look for "crows feet" when assessing "eye smiles" - but I caution against this for several reasons. After one reaches their mid-thirties, most everyone has some degree of crow's feet. Moreover an increase or decrease in these wrinkles are difficult to qualify, let alone quantify when the face is moving. A much more accurate and dynamic eye metric for identifying sincere smiles - is to look for eyelid closure. There is essentially no variance in iris size from person to person, so along with how much white of the eye (sclera) is visible - this adjacent anatomy serve as excellent yardsticks to quantify eyelid closure.

For a sincere smile though - simple partial eyelid closure is not enough nonverbal. There are different muscles used depending on the emotional reason for this action (See Secret # 353: Brad Pitt's Eyes - Sincere and Insincere Smiles). Sincere smiles must always have the characteristic concave-up furrow on the lower eyelids as well as their partial closure - as seen here very well on Prince William and to a somewhat lesser extent on Kate. Both are trying to suppress their sincere, felt smiles.

Body Language Secret # 100:
Kate Middleton is Pregnant

Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince William attended a concert for The Prince's Trust held at Royal Albert Hall on 6 December 2011. There they met The X Factor hopefuls Marcus Collins (eight series) and Olly Murs (sixth series), as well as the musician/head judge Gary Barlow - all favorites of the royal couple. Kate wore a $99 dress made by Zara and a jacket care of Ralph Lauren. Zara's Lace Tulip dress subsequently sold-out within 24... World wide!

The real news however is that Kate is pregnant. Although there has been speculation about this, as there naturally would be for any so famous and so attractive a duchess and prince, there's been no announcement - verbally that is.... But Kate Middleton's body language has already made the announcement. Throughout the entire event Tuesday evening, she held her handbag very close to her central lower abdomen in an awkward but classic blocking-protective nonverbal tell - highly consistent with pregnancy. This can also be a body language signal of common low confidence-low comfort - but that clearly doesn't apply to Catherine.

Most of the time Kate used this blocking maneuver with both arms/hands, however even when one hand was used, her handbag continued to be strategically placed. Its position even remained the same despite the switching of hands. Although she probably doesn't necessarily enjoy it, Kate's grown accustomed to being in the public eye. Alpha females don't carry their purses or handbags in such a manner unless there's a significant psychological or physiologic reason - and make no mistake - Kate's an Alpha Female. An image search for "Kate Middleton purse" clearly demonstrates that it is uncommon for her to carry her's this way - except for recently. In the context of pregnancy, this protective gesture is extremely common, highly predictive and very instinctual. Body Language is hard-wired into our brains and the protective behavior and emotion of motherhood is perhaps the strongest instinct.
