Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3489: Margot Robbie wants Prince Harry - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Although Margot Robbie has been in a relationship with Tom Ackerley, a British assistant director, for almost two years, her appearance on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show tells us she desires Prince Harry. When actors are not "in character", particularly when they're discussing their personal lives and experiences - they're no better than average at suppressing their nonverbal behavior.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of Ms. Robbie's this appearance.

During 0:09 - 0:11, Margot displays a variation of the elbows-out, armpit configuration as Jimmy Fallon takes out the picture taken in a photo booth which includes (along with some friends) both herself and Prince Harry (who she had mistook for Ed Sheeran).

The elbows-out armpit display, when coupled with certain facial expressions conveys a significant element of sexuality (In this moment Ms. Robbie's face includes a sincere smile/sincere laughter with blushing which carries with it a component of embarrassment). It doesn't necessarily indicate that a person is attracted to someone in the immediate area. It does however mean that they are feeling, significantly sexual. Of course here she's on TV and the Internet - so her display is to a much larger audience than most moments in life.

Not surprisingly, this effect of this nonverbal cluster is significantly amplified when armpits are not covered by clothing. What may be intriguing to some people however, is that the elbows-out, armpit exposed body language will also often sexually stimulate many of those who see this behavior.

This particular nonverbal cluster is indicative of a high sincerity moment (0:40 - 0:42).

When the head-neck unit is tilted (and here rotated as well) coupled with finger/thumb touching of the temple region - along with a smile - the smile is almost always a sincere one (Duchenne Smile). Her blushing also indicates a high level of sincerity.

Immediately after Fallon points out that Harry was also in the picture, Margot touches her ring on the ring-finger of her left hand (1:14 - 1:15) indicating a romantic emotional tone toward the Prince.

Watch out Tom Ackerley, your princess is on the prowl.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3464: Of Katie Holmes, Super Bowls, Smiles and Anxiety - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Katie Holmes was recently a guest on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. Although Ms. Holmes is a skilled actress, when she's "just being Katie" and not "in character", she's no better than average at suppressing her anxiety. A particular body language example of this behavior is examined below.

Beginning at 0:09, their dialog continues ...

Fallon: ... But did you watch the Super Bowl?

Holmes: This year, um, no, [nervous laugh] I, I di -, I was doing a cooking class with my - ch, child.

Fallon: How lame!

Holmes: I know!

Fallon: Get out!

Holmes: I know!

Fallon, Come on!

Holmes: No, no! Then we went, then we went to the museum - and then I s-, I like, right before the halftime show, I was like [knocks 5 times on Jimmy's desk] to my friend's apartment, I'm like, lemmie in, lemmie in, lemmie! - 'cause I knew Beyoncé was about to come up...."

From 0:14 through 0:21, Katie twists her ring on her right ring finger while also sliding it partially up and down.

Note that although Katie is an accomplished actor - her smile is a false one. We discern this because of her prominent display of her lower teeth.

Her fake smile is a conscious, forced behavior - while her manipulation of her ring occurs at a subconscious level. It's important to note that this does NOT indicate Katie Holmes overall personality is insincere  - however in this particular moment, her smile is indeed forced and thus insincere.

Whenever a consciously initiated nonverbal signal (e.g., a false smile) is seen simultaneously with a subconsciously driven one (e.g., the twisting and sliding of her ring) - always look to the unconscious body language in order to tell the true thought-emotions

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3341: Selena Gomez, Ghosts and Jimmy Fallon - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Selena Gomez's appearance on the Tonight Show earlier today provides a great demonstration of a multitude nonverbal behavior tells (Fallon's original video has been removed from YouTube). One of these is discussed here.

Ms. Gomez says she believes ghost and spirits to be very real - and thus she has an app on her phone to detect their presence - and she demonstrated this for Jimmy Fallon and the audience.

After moving on to other subjects - after Selena channeled Johnny Cash while singing "Ring of Fire" - the signal on her Ghost Hunter M2 App sounded the alarm .... perhaps the Man in Black was singing a duet with her.

During 4:52 - 4:53 Ms. Gomez displays a classic facial expression of sincere surprise. Surprise is an emotion which is commonly feigned, yet if you know what to look for - you won't be fooled. Note how Selena's mouth opens primary with a vertical component. When people fake a surprise expression their mouths' open primarily horizontally - with the upper and lower lips being quiet taught. In sincere surprise, although very briefly - the lips are loose and plump.

Moreover a sincere surprise expression will not reveal teeth for the first second or two. Thereafter, as the surprise is replaced (partially [4:54] or fully) by other emotions - the teeth are usually revealed - but if the smile is sincere - they will be covered by the loose lips in the initial display.

Of course, during sincere surprise the eyelids also open wider. This too is often very brief and may be subtly opened (more difficult to spot in real-time) to extremely wide - depending on the level of surprise. Selena's eyes exemplify this prototypical "White and Wide" nonverbal signal - along with a simultaneous elevation of her eyebrows.

Is Selena's belief in ghosts 100% - or does she have some doubts? During this video, what is her primary anxiety tell?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3260: Cara Delevingne vs. Emilia Clarke in an Eyebrow-Off (plus some Schwarzenegger and Gyllenhaal) Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last month Cara Delevingne and Emilia Clarke had an "Eyebrow-Off" on The Graham Norton Show. Now Emilia is a bit older and with more acting experience - yet the contrast in their forehead and eyebrow expressiveness is profoundly different in this highlight - why? Because Cara Delevigne's forehead is fairly heavily treated with Botox.

The assertion that Botox treatments in relative youth will prevent wrinkling as one ages, has little scientific basis. Those who most enthusiastically endorse such "treatments" are the physicians who financially benefit from these procedures. However the reason it is discussed here is to contrast the diminished expressiveness with those who are treated vs. the untreated.

Left eyebrow elevation in a nonverbal signal of doubt.

Both eyebrows are drawn together and vectored downward. Also there is a slight lip pursing, a suppressed smile together with nasal flaring.

This projects signals of anger mixed with a plan of action.

Now certainly any good actor can elevate their eyebrows without (or barely) contracting their forehead - however those who undergo Botox injections do this far too often. It's a result of upper eyebrow over-action which comes about when the forehead is trying to be contracted and it's unable to do so. Consequently, those with Botoxed foreheads will often give the appearance of fear or rage.

Incredulity mixed with a mild amount of Contempt

The left eyebrow this time - with more disbelief

Emotional pain associated with empathy

Sadness with a component of fear

Fantastic Elevated Central Forehead Contraction with inner eyebrows vectored upwards.

Mouth slightly opened with corners directed down

Actors who are treated with facial Botox are doing themselves - and their audiences a great disservice. The same is true for the rest of us. Emotional expression is fundamentally human. Those who seek to be less expressive when it's normal and healthy to convey emotions - are chasing low empathy and sociopathic role models.

In the words of Julia Roberts, "I want my kids to know when I'm pissed, when I'm happy and when I'm confounded."

On a side note, another fascinating body language tell is seen earlier in this video. Notice that after Jake Gyllenhaal jests, "My mom said, 'Your eyebrows are BIG! That's not MY son!' " - Arnold Schwarzenegger twists the ring on his right hand. Gyllenhaal's innocent humor gave the former California Governor anxiety - bringing back memories of the very public and painful disclosure of his son via an extra-marital affair. Twisting of a ring is a very common nonverbal MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) and anxiety tell. The timing of Gyllenhaal's Joke - followed by Arnold's act - is suspiciously circa simultaneous. They are linked in cause and effect.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3256: Katie Holmes on Jimmy Fallon - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Katie Holmes was a guest The Tonight Show yesterday. As with most highly skilled actors, when they are "in character" - their anxiety tells are relatively minimal (although not absent). However when actors are not acting and thus "just being themselves" - their anxiety is just as frequent and obvious as it would be for any average person.

Ms. Holmes' conversation with Jimmy Fallon provides for us several excellent body language tells - what follows is a partial analysis.

During 0:06 - 0:10 (and again from 2:06 - 2:11), Katie is seen twisting her ring on her right hand. This is an example of a MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) surrogate display and is a very common anxiety tell.

It's referred to as a surrogate because the ring is a worn object - rather than part of the body.

During 0:29, Ms. Holmes displays a (bilateral) Hair Adjust Behind the Ears (HABE) configuration. More commonly this is performed on one side. Each example is indicative of anxiety (with the bilateral correlative with a higher amount).

Yet we can slice this thinner - this is an example of a nonverbal "Alpha Up-regulator". It is seen as the psyche is dialing up an alpha characteristics while down-regulating beta qualities. Put another way - despite the fact she has anxiety, Ms. Holmes is entering into an "Assertiveness Mode".

During the 1:22 - 1:24 segment, Katie reaches across her body with her right hand to scratch behind her left ear (on the mastoid process).

Reaching across the body is significant for increased "blocking" (temporarily forming a protective barrier) and thus a greater level of anxiety is signaled here vs. if she had scratched on the same side. Additionally, this specific nonverbal MAP has a high correlation with "honest anxiety" and a low correlation with deception. (e.g., this is rarely a lie tell).

During the 1:43 - 1:44 segment, we see another MAP surrogate (and anxiety tell) - very similar to the ring twisting showcased above - here Katie adjusts/fondles her bracelet.

These examples are shown in the context entertainment during a low-consequence interview. Yet these same tells are displayed repeatedly on the campaign trail, in the board room, the court room, in high-level negotiations and during virtually every sales scenario - and very often they are contradicting the verbal language. When verbal and nonverbal communication are not congruent - the nonverbal always is telling the truth. How many did you miss this week?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2921: Eve Hewson (Bono's Daughter) Recounts Phone Pranking Justin Timberlake (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Eve Hewson is an actor. She also is Bono's daughter. In this recent appearance on The Tonight Show, she recounts to Jimmy Fallon how she and a friend got onto her father's computer and lifted a bunch of phone numbers - including Justin Timberlake's .... and .... (Well just watch the video).

Although she is an actor, Ms. Hewson displays significant anxiety during this interview. A partial analysis of her nonverbal indicators of nervousness are described below. All of these examples are MAPs (Manipulators, Adaptors, Pacifiers) - with the exception of ring twist - which is a map-surrogate.

At multiple times, Eve displayed an Inward Lip Roll (ILR). The inward lip roll is a signal that the psyche is trying to suppress the inward build-up as well as the outward display of emotion.

The Hair Adjust Behind the Ear (HABE) is a sign of the attempt at an up-regulation of alpha qualities. This body language is seen when there is an increased need for assertiveness.

Ms. Hewson is seen rubbing her thighs throughout a large portion of this video. A thigh rub is usually a general anxiety indicator (what are some exceptions?).

Hair stroking in this context (in distinction to the HABE) is a general anxiety indicator.

Twisting a ring is also a general anxiety indicator - although it has significantly greater specificity when it's the wedding ring. It also is important to make a distinction between twisting the ring vs. sliding it up and down along the length of the finger. Is there another nuance in this moment as well?
