Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2610: Nancy Pelosi Body Language Tells Us She Fears for Obamacare's Demise (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this brief press interview, U.S. House Minority Leader, NancyPelosi displays multiple expressions of fear. In the first example below, this nonverbal occurs just as she is being asked, "How concerned are you that the Affordable Care Act might be in trouble?".

Note: Since the original writing of this post, the video has since been deleted from its internet source.

Note the configuration of her mouth in the wide display of her bottom teeth in this image (a mild "Mouth of Fear"). In addition, her momentarily tensed "Neck of Fear" adds to this body language cluster (at 0:01).

In this second image captured a few seconds later at 0:40, Ms. Pelosi's fear face is increased with a slightly but significant greater downward vectoring of the corners of her mouth, increased neck muscle tension and her eyes are opened slightly wider.

What other specific differences are there between the nonverbal displays in these two moments?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2609: John Kennedy in 1959 on "Face The Nation", "Are You Running for President?" - What His Body Language says (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Every November in the United States, people become fascinated with all things JFK - and this year being the 50th anniversary of his assassination is certainly no exception. In this flashback video of then U.S. Senator John Kennedy on "Face the Nation", there are two brief segments - one from 1958 and a second from 1959 in which the same commentator William Lawrence asks Kennedy to declare his intentions regarding his candidacy for the 1960 Presidential election.

Note: Since the original writing of this post, the video has since been deleted from its internet source.

At 1:18, Lawrence begins, "... Senator when are you going to drop this, um, public pretense of non-candidacy and frankly admit that you're already seeking the Democratic Presidential Nomination in 1960?"

This is the first frame of Kennedy when the second camera shows his face in response to Lawrence's question.

John Kennedy's face shows all the components of Full Sincere Smile:

The Senator's eyelids are partially closed - although he did have longstanding droopy skin above his right upper eyelid (dermatochalasis), his lids are further and partially closed here.

Another very important feature of a sincere smile is the dynamic concave-up furrows in each of Kennedy's lower eyelids. This is an absolute requirement for any sincere smile.

The primarily upward vectoring of the muscles of the cheeks is another requirement of a sincere smile and indeed is the cause of the above mentioned temporary lower eyelid creases.

Only the Senator's upper teeth are visible here - and with the exception of viewer or camera position, outright laughter or prolonged posing - the bottom teeth should not be seen during a sincere smile.

Finally we see no contraction of any muscles within Kennedy's forehead (This of course excludes any passive wrinkles). If any forehead contraction is seen - the smile is NEVER a sincere one.

A sincere smile (even a partial, suppressed one as long as it is sincere) - coupled with blushing is highly indicative of concealment of the truth upon being confronted. This is related to the same phenomenon which occurs during "Duping Delight". Even though this image is black and white and of low resolution - what signs are present in this example indicating the future President is also blushing?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2608: Ryan Ferguson's Release From Prison - and the Self Righteous Jaw Wiggle (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Ryan Ferguson was released last week from prison. He had served 10 years for a murder he did not commit. In this interview here by George Stephanopoulos, Ryan is seated next to his father, Bill Ferguson.

During the 2:21 - 2:32 segment, Bill can be seen moving his jaw (mandible) back and forth in what is known as a "Self-Righteous Jaw Wiggle". Here we see it in isolation, however this highly characteristic nonverbal is usually clustered with the either the "Self-Righteous Torso Wiggle", the "Self-Righteous Head Wiggle" - or both.

This body language is subconsciously directed and indicative of a high-alpha emotional tone and is nearly always accompanied by a definitive and assertive statement. It is displayed by those who feel they are in a position to carry out their plans (whether they be open and straightforward as in this scenario ... or  clandestine as in others). This example is somewhat unusual and rarely captured because the person speaking is not the same person who is displaying the body language - yet this demonstrates that "father and son are of one mind".

Congratulations Ryan.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2607: Jonathan Martin Reads Statement - Richie Incognito Miami Dolphins Controversy - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Jonathan Martin made his first public statement yesterday since leaving the Miami Dolphins on 30 October 2013. The defensive lineman has made allegations including harassment against his former National Football League teammate Richie Incognito. Although this statement was prepared by his attorneys, Martin's nonverbal facial signals leak the true emotional tone which he is feeling in real-time.

His words are saying one thing, while his body language says something completely different.

Whenever the verbal and the nonverbal messages are in disagreement, always believe the nonverbal - for therein signals the primary emotional drivers (and the truth).

This picture is from 0:25 in the above video.

This image is taken from 0:28 in the video.

This photo is from the 0:33 mark.

In all three of these images, Martin's mouth expression is highly characteristic of the emotion of regret.

It is also important to note that during all three of these examples, the very instants his mouth were showing regret, his eyes were not making contact with his audience. In this last one he is looking in the distance, and in the first two he exhibited bilateral eyelid closure - thus conveying emotional processing. Mr. Martin's logical brain knows the situation, yet his emotional brain has yet to fully catch up.

What other body language signals are conveyed in this short video?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2606: Brett Farve Displays Body Language of Fear about any Son Playing Football (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this snippet of a longer interview to be aired on 18 November 2013, Brett Farve told the camera and Matt Lauer that if he had a son, "... I would be real leery of him playing [football]." Although the former Green Bay Packer great and future Hall-of-Famer says, "... leery ..." - his body language is saying FEAR. This very distinct but short-lived nonverbal is displayed at two distinct times in the form of microexpressions.

Microexpressions of fear are often partially displayed - primarily or only on one side. In these examples, Farve's left corner of his mouth pulls quickly laterally and at a downward angle. This can be gauged by seeing how the lower teeth momentarily become more visible (Mouth of Fear). Although these are captured below in still images, it is extremely valuable to view these in the dynamic and more real-world context of the video (above).

This first microexpression of fear (at 0:10) is less pronounced and of shorter in duration.

In this display second display at 0:12, the more pronounced example of microexpression of fear is seen.

Note that Favre's central forehead is contracted. In this context it is highly consistent with fear of emotional or physical pain - either for himself or via empathy of fear he is feeling for a child - the son he doesn't have and the message he is sending here to other parents.

In each of these examples, but also more pronounced in the second one, Favre's left neck muscles can also be seen very quickly contracting. Often called the "Neck of Fear", this nonverbal only lasts a fraction of a second here (another microexpression).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2605: President Obama and Health Insurance Cancellation Fix - and an Alpha-Beta Hybrid Body Language Illustrator (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Today President Obama gave a speech in which a proposed a fix for the millions of cancelled health insurance policies precipitated by the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). Barack is much better than most at using body language illustrators (commonly called "hand gestures" or just "gestures") than the vast majority of politicians.

For example, during the 6:06 to 6:10 segment, the President is shown using the "Split Finger Fastball" with his right hand. This illustrator acquires its name from its close resemblance to the hand configuration used by baseball pitchers to throw a pitch using the same name.

The split finger fastball illustrator is not fully alpha (hyper-assertive, dominant, over-confident, etc.) - yet it is far from being highly-beta (demure, acquiescent, weak, etc.). It is a good alpha-beta hybrid nonverbal, however in general it leans toward the alpha end of the spectrum. It is important to note however, that since the President is using his non-dominant hand in this example (he's left handed), this indicates he is not feeling quite as confident as he would if this were his left hand. And surprise - the President here is trying to explain his fix for the recent and massive health insurance cancellations.

Thus Mr. Obama asserts power and authority and as long as he does not display this gesture excessively - also avoids coming across too domineering or offensive. Extremely few speakers and "leaders" are aware of the extreme importance and effect of nuancing the alpha-beta balance of their nonverbal signals at just the right times has on establishing, building and keeping rapport.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2604: Obamacare Girl "Adrianna" on GMA - Body Language Harbingers of .... (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The failure of the Obamacare Website and the cancellation of millions of health insurance policies has left the woman known as "Obamacare Girl" feeling maligned and bullied. This brief interview demonstrates several common nonverbal pre-crying displays. Such signals of sadness may or may not be successful in suppressing tears.

At 2:01 Obamacare Girl (Adrianna) briefly breathes through  tightened and narrowed lips. This particular "Tight-Lipped Breathing" is characterized by one (or multiple shallow and) rapid breath(s) and is very commonly seen in anticipation of a significant emotional event (here crying on national television and sharing her story with millions) and has an unpredictable outcome feeling for those displaying this nonverbal. This tight-lipped breathing along with increased and shallow respiration rate, also is associated with increased adrenaline, rapid pulse and a rise in blood pressure.  Some may confuse it with the "puffer fish" which occurs both before, but more commonly after a significant event; however the puffer fish (which is usually just a few or even a single expiration) brings on a lower pulse, deeper and slower breaths as well as lower blood pressure.

The puffer fish lowers anxiety while tight-lipped breathing (TLB) is associated with increased anxiety - and thus often is a harbinger of a crying-emotional release.

At 2:02 Adrianna can be seen very briefly "pulling in" her central cheeks in what is a very evanescent "False Mastication like" display.

This is a very common anxiety indicator and is also subconsciously used in an attempt to suppress crying.

We see an increase reflectivity in Adrianna's eyes in this image (2:04) which indicates more tear-film from the expressing of "crying tears".

It is very common to gaze upward prior to crying in an effort to suppress sadness and tears.

Chin dimpling, seen here - also see at 2:04, is also a very common crying harbinger.

Subtle chin dimpling is seen displayed at 2:11 along with mild-to-moderate jaw jutting.

Although a jaw jut is seen usually in the context of anger, it may also be occur to stave off an emotional display of tears.

Adrianna also sports widely opened eyelids - which is is also common in the moments just prior to crying and near-crying.

At 2:12 we see Adrianna in a specific  facial expression termed an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR). It is the psyche's attempt to suppress an escalation of emotion - both internally and in body language. The ILR is more commonly seen in the setting of anger and also on occasion to suppress joy-laughter.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2603: Sarah Palin's Body Language - She Feels Disgust toward Pope Francis and ... She Tells a Fib (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this recent interview of Sarah Palin, she displays many fantastic examples of body language. Two of these extremely valuable emotional-thought tells are discussed below.

At 0:16 in the above video when she recounts her story of being 12 years old - the former Governor of Alaska displays a unilateral near-eye scratch. In the midst of a declarative statement this specific nonverbal signal is very highly correlative with deception. This is not to suggest that Ms. Palin is lying about being a "born again" Christian or that some of her story is not true - however a portion of it is fabricated.

In the context of critiquing Pope Francis, beginning at 2:18 the 2008 U.S. Vice-Presidential candidate says, "... he's had some statements that to me seem kinda liberal ..." At 2:22 during the first syllable of  the word "kinda" she displays a classic microexpression of disgust. Her dramatic and bilateral nostril dilation is highly demonstrative of this emotion.

Not only does Sarah Palin think Pope Francis is liberal - he disgusts her.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2602: Barack Obama at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Yesterday was Veteran's Day in America (Armistice Day, Remembrance Day, etc. in other countries) in honor those who fought and those who died in World War I. President Barack Obama paid his respects at United States' The Tomb of The Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

There are few occasions when a Head-of-State should stand with his feet so close together and his hands loosely clasped in front as Mr. Obama does here. Hands held clasped in front of one's lower abdomen or groin is known as the "Fig Leaf" (aka "Genital Guarding"). Also known as genital guarding, it normally sends signals of low confidence and a demure emotional mindset.

The same principle holds true for feet which are planted closely together - also sending out signals of low comfort and beta behavior. Standing with feet shoulder-width apart (and slightly less so for women) in most scenarios is recommended as this transmits confidence, emotional-comfort and significant alpha signals.

In a few select settings - such as meetings with religious figures, funerals, receiving remains, weddings or other religious ceremonies, such a stance of deference projects respect, empathy and other non-egocentric leadership qualities.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2601: "Governor Christie, Are You a Tea Party Republican?" Why His Answer Tells Us Whether or Not He Will Run for President in 2016 (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this interview with Jake Tapper last week prior to his landslide re-election, Chris Christie shows us via his nonverbal signs that he will be almost certainly running for President in 2016.

At 5:31 when Tapper asks him, "Are you a tea-partier? Are you a tea party republican?"

Just after he's asked and as he answers this question, the Governor of New Jersey readjusts in his campaign bus seat (5:34 - 5:37). This classic and reliable "Squirming in his Seat" body language signals significant anxiety secondary to this tea party question.

A few moments later at beginning at the 6:15 mark, Governor Christie continues, "...Listen, I, there's a lot of principles about the Tea Party that I agree with, and have governed, um, in New Jersey in a way that's consistent with a lot of that. But, you know some of the stuff that's happened of late in Washington I think, is not even consistent with what, um, a lot of the real folks who started the Tea Party would have been, would agree with."

During the 6:20 - 6:21 segment as he says, "... and have governed, um, in New Jersey in a way that's  ..." Christie displays an across-the-chest arm scratch as his right hand reaches across to his left upper arm. We have all done this and many other similar MAPs (Manipulators, Adaptors, Pacifiers) during moments of anxiety. And no doubt we experienced a "real itch". Such itching is very real and not at all imaged. A release of the neurotransmitter known as natriuretic polypeptide b (Nppb) is triggered with the onset of anxiety which in turn creates the real sensation of an itch. And an itch needs to be scratched.

Tapper then responds, "What, I don't know what you're talking about. You mean ..."

[Christie again reaches for and scratches the same shoulder as he struggles for an answer from 6:36 - 6:41] "Well I mean just the idea that that um, ah, you don't try to, well for instance like, on the sequester, we're actually succeeding as a movement in reducing government spending on the domestic side pretty significantly. But there was no, there's no acknowledgement of that by some folks in the Washington establishment. I think we should have been talking more about that. That's a real accomplishment, um, by our party to try and reduce spending that way and we,and what we should do is now is move to the entitlement side, to start to work on that side as well, then we can really look towards tax reform and other things are consistent with ss[some] a lot of folks who call themselves members of the tea party, ah want to see happen in Washington."

Chris Christie's seat squirming and cross-chested shoulder itching is indicating that he is dancing between framing himself as a far right republican (and thus putting him in a better position to win the republican Presidential nomination in 2016) and a centrist republican (so that he can win the general election). He would not be undertaking this balancing act if he were not strongly considering a bid for the Oval Office.
