Body Language Analysis No. 4387: Donald Trump Welcomes Foreign Interference in US Elections - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last week, ABC News released a portion of George Stephanopoulos' extended interview with President Trump. Additional segments were subsequently released. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of the initial video.

Throughout the Oval Office portion of this interview, the President is seated while Stephanopoulos remains standing. Although he has significant home field advantage, this dynamic places Trump at a significant detriment. This is particularly true since Stephanopoulos is shorter and thinner.

George Stephanopoulos also had one or both of his palms facing downward on the Resolute Desk during the majority of this interview. Additionally, Stephanopoulos was leaning mildly-to-moderately forward. This nonverbal posture further up-regulates his status to a relative alpha with the President assuming a relative beta position.

At no time does President Trump point his torso or any other part of his body fully toward Stephanopoulos. Sitting in the most powerful room in the World, with a profound home-field advantage, in the context of the two men being filmed for an interview, Trump's refusal to 'face his problems (here, Stephanopoulos' questions) head-on' sends strong signals of evasiveness, emotional discomfort, weakness, and deception to both his interviewer - and to the world.

George Stephanopoulos, of course, has another advantage. As a journalist, he has the rare experience of becoming accustomed to the Oval Office years prior to this interview during his tenure as the White House Communications Director and Senior Advisor to President Clinton. He also interviewed Presidents G.W. Bush and Barack Obama multiple times in that very room.

Notice too, the volume and tone of Stephanopoulos' speech. Although he questions the President with assertiveness, his vocal qualities tend toward friendliness - causing Trump to lower his guard. In the ensuing days, the President will be partially backpedaling.

Continuing at 0:58, George Stephanopoulos says, "Why does it bother you so much?"

Donald Trump answers, "Ah - because [long pause] it's untrue. I like the truth. You know I'm actually a very honest guy [quick inhale] If I thought they were correct - I [stammer] wouldn't be complaining at all ..."

In rapid succession, Trump looks down to his left, gazes to his center, pauses at length, then looks directly left, and next to his center, then up to his left.

President Trump's slow and hesitant response to this question is conspicuous. His darting gaze indicates that he was - first trying to formulate the syntax to an answer - then he was trying to recall an audio memory/answer to Stephanopoulos' question - and next trying to recall visual memory/answer to this question. These are all indications that the President was scrambling to answer a straightforward question.

Note that just after he says, "I like the truth" and as he is saying, "You know I'm actually a very honest guy" - he looks down and away from Stephanopoulos as he also closes his eyes.

His use of the word, "actually" in this context is also a tell. Properly used, "actually" is used to show contrast, emphasis, and 'in a distinction to'. Stephanopoulos didn't question his honesty here - he just asked (referring to the new poll results), "Why does it bother you so much?". So, why did Trump use the word "actually"? When a person says, "actually" - it's often used as a form of verbal backpedaling - and demonstrative of the speaker's emotional discomfort with their own answer (indicating hedging or deception). Moreover, taken in isolation, an unsolicited defense of one's honesty is a telltale sign of dishonesty. His honesty wasn't being questioned - why is he defending it?

Yet another indication of deception here, (whilst proclaiming his own honesty) - is Trump's audible inhale and very quick segue to his next sentence as he finishes saying, "You know I'm actually a very honest guy". He told a lie and, subconsciously, he wants to cover-up his deception by immediately proceeding to the next sentence. He does so too quickly. A person declaring their honesty (if it were even being questioned) would pause after saying it, letting their declaration (with a confident tone) hang in the air.

Note that during 1:45, the President hesitates before he calls his son a "young man" ("I mean I was reading that my son was gonna to go to jail, thisa [sic] good [pause] young man"). He looks down to his left in quick succession here (1:44, 1:45). This is the quadrant we often look toward when deciding on word choice and syntax. Donald Trump Jr. is 41 years old. Although the term, "young man" is slang, and, as with all slang, it means different things to different people, most of us would not describe a 41-year-old man as a "young man". The President's use of this description (which he has used on multiple occasions) is a psychological ploy attempting to soften public opinion and to excuse his son's alleged behavior.

As the President says, "And then the report comes out" (during 2:16 - 2:17), he rocks forward-and-backward in his chair. This signals the excessive motion of his lower extremities - indicating an adrenaline surge (flight or fight) and significant anxiety. Please watch the video, as this chair rocking dynamic cannot be captured in a still image.

Simultaneously, President Trump also stares into the middle distance while displaying a mild fear expression. His fear is particularly conveyed with his raised inner (medial) eyebrows.

During 2:33 - 2:35, the President gazes up to his left as he says, "I tell ya what, I've seen a lot of things over my life, I don't think in my whole life I've ever called the FBI." Looking up to one's left (more so for right-hand dominant people), is the quadrant to which we look when we're visually recalling an event. This eye gaze dynamic, in this context, indicates with high likelihood, that the President was visually remembering an occasion when he had called the FBI.

During 2:56, as he says, "The FBI director is wrong", he forms his lips in a dramatic configuration. Such hyperbolic mouth movements are quite common with Trump - and for all individuals in settings where they believe they're alpha/hyper-alpha to others who (or about whom) they're speaking. In this context, Trump's alpha projection could either apply to George Stephanopoulos, FBI director Christopher Wray, or both.

Beginning at 2:56, George Stephanopoulos asks, "Your campaign this time around, if foreigners, if Russia, if China, if someone else offers you information on an opponent, should they accept it or should they call the FBI?"

At the precise moment Stephanopoulos says, "Russia", Trump is simultaneously closing his eyes and swallowing hard. Trump's eyelid closure is a form of decreased eye contact - and a nonverbal manifestation of his attempt at distancing himself from the subject of his deception. The President's hard swallow demonstrates his dry and tightened throat triggered by his accompanying anxiety.

A nonverbal tell of profound importance occurs just after Stephanopoulos says, "Your campaign this time around, if foreigners, if Russia, if China, if someone else offers you information on an ..." - Trump displays what is known as a Forward Lip Purse (3:02 - 3:04). A forward lip purse (not to be confused with a Lateral Lip Purse) signals undisclosed disagreement and/or clandestine plans. A person who makes a forward lip purse always perceives themselves to be Alpha relative to those with whom they're interacting. They also believe they have a good chance of success with their plans.

This is Trump's Forward Lip Purse captured during the same split second from an anterior angle (on a different video available via twitter (4:04 - 4:06 https://twitter.com/ABC/status/1138936855573999616)

Notice also, that the President is looking down to his left during this forward lip purse. This is the quadrant toward which we look when we're choosing our words and formulating syntax. Trump's word choice was telling, "I think maybe you do both. I think you might [pause] wanna listen. I don't - there's nothing wrong with listening..."

On such an important matter - if he truly believed his conduct was lawful, he should not say, "I think", rather he should say, "I know" or simply, "You'd want to listen." But he didn't. He wavered, saying, "I think." Additionally, he used the qualifier, "maybe" - and the slang, "wanna" (psychologically softening any opposition). Note also, his tone as he's says this, especially as he says, "there's nothing wrong with listening...". It's a pleading, rationalizing, whiny tone.

At other times during this video, President Trump makes multiple similar rationalizing and hedging statements with similar vocal tones, such as, "It's not an interference, they have information. I think I'd take it", and "If I thought there was something wrong I'd go maybe to the FBI - if I thought there was something wrong...", and "The FBI doesn't have enough agents to take care of it", and "they all do it, they always have and that's the way it is".

Moreover, just after Donald Trump says, "I think maybe you do both" - the camera view is switched and his expression briefly but clearly conveys a mild-to-moderate level of fear.

During 3:12, just after he says, "If somebody called", Trump exhibits what is known as a Loose Tongue Jut. A loose tongue jut indicates the thought-emotions of: "I've been bad", "I've been caught", "I've done something stupid" (Navarro).

Take care not to confuse a Loose Tongue Jut with a Tight Tongue Jut or a Wide Open Tongue Jut.

Summary: Despite clear and longstanding campaign finance law against such practice - and his subsequent partial backpedaling, President Trump's nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behavior displayed in the accompanying video, indicates that not only does Donald Trump believe receiving foreign intelligence on rival politicians is acceptable behavior - but the President is actively communicating with foreign government(s) and/or their surrogates in this capacity and plans to continue doing so.

Body Language Analysis No. 4305: Donald Trump's Aberrancies - post-Summit Interview - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Donald Trump gave this post-Summit Interview with George Stephanopoulos on Tuesday 12 June 2018. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis focusing on some specific body language deviations which the President displayed.

A few hours earlier, Trump and Kim had signed a document - officially titled: "Joint Statement of President Donald J. Trump of the United States of America and Chairman Kim Jong Un of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea at the Singapore Summit". The signing took place in this same room - and Trump and Kim sat at the table which, in this interview, is positioned behind and to the left of Trump.

Look at this screen grab of Donald Trump. His hands are configured in what is known as a Low Steeple (more specifically: a Seated, Low, Conventional Steeple). The President's hands are positioned in this manner virtually constantly during any seated one-on-one interviews.

The low steeple is a hyper-alpha nonverbal. And like all alpha (or hyper-alpha) body language, a little bit goes a long way. It's a bit like garlic. You may like garlic. Garlic may be the ingredient you want. You may think Garlic tastes good in spaghetti sauce - but grandma always taught you not to use too much. Donald Trump dramatically overuses this signal. Waaaay too much garlic.

Although Trump is an alpha male, it's quite unusual-to-rare to find alpha males sitting in this fashion for an extended duration. But Trump does it constantly. No other US President ever did. Ever. I defy anyone to find a single picture of another sitting US president displaying a low steeple.

However, look at President Trump's feet. His left leg is wrapped way around the side of his chair - such that his knee is pointed to the left of Mr. Stephanopoulos. It's so far back, that his heel is positioned a bit further posterior than his gluteus. Moreover, his left heel is elevated off the floor. Trump doesn't want to be there (and it's got nothing to do with Stephanopoulos).

I've analyzed Trump's nonverbal behavior well over 1000 times (over 350 published) - and although he routinely sits in the Seated Crotch Display (aka Manspreading), he never displays this leg posture of "wanting to leave" body language. Never.

This nonverbal dynamic indicates President Trump is anxious. He wants to leave. He doesn't want to be in that room. If a person to whom you're speaking ever adopts this same leg-out-to-the-side posture - you can be sure they have an urgency to depart too. And although we can't see the full layout of this room - it's highly probable that Trump's left knee and foot are pointing toward an exit.

President Trump also displays this hand configuration - with his fingers intertwined and tightened. This nonverbal sign is indicative of frustration - along with a component of anger. Again, this configuration is rare for Trump to use during any one-on-one interviews.

This last example, that of Hand Cupping-Clenching - also projects frustration - but additionally, it carries with it a significantly more beta emotional tone. Note the President is protecting his right hand - his dominant hand.

SUMMARY: President Trump displays multiple examples of anxiety during this interview - as well as frustration - along with beta emotional tone. Intriguingly, Trump's lower extremity nonverbal display is body language which he's never before used publicly during his entire campaign or thus far in his presidency.

There were, in fact, three participants in this interview, Donald Trump, George Stephanopoulos - and the Room itself. The Room, of course, is a metaphor - a symbol of Kim Jong-un, the events of the Summit, and/or the agreements (or lack thereof) within the "Joint Statement".

Body Language Analysis No. 4279: Rudy Giuliani regarding President Trump's alleged Sexual Relationship with Stormy Daniels - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Sunday 6 May 2018, Rudy Giuliani (one of President Trump's personal attorneys) appeared on This Week with George Stephanopoulos. The former NYC mayor displayed a plethora of nonverbal tells. What follows a partial nonverbal analysis focusing on one key passage of the interview.

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS (continuing at 0:56): So the President does deny any sexual relationship with Stormy Daniels?

RUDY GIULIANI: He has, ah, I have not - ah, I'm notta, as I said, I'm not involved in that, but the reality is he denies - she denied it, then at, when, when it was opportunistic right before the - election, she came forward - and then of course, the whole thing happened with - Michael Cohen, an-, and, a it's history now because it wasn't a campaign anything ah, that -

The image immediately above was captured during the 1:00 mark as Rudy Giuliani said, "... has, ah ..."

From 1:15 - 1:16, as Mr. Giuliani "... history now because it wasn't a campaign ...", although somewhat less in magnitude (vs. the first example), he repeated the same eyes wide opened display.

The significance of widely opened upper eyelids - when occurring:

• Out-of-context
• Frequently

... can't be over-emphasized.

This Out-of-Context, Eyes Wide Open display simply screams that the person is trying too hard to convince you. Why? Because they don't believe it. Because they're lying. It's a profound and classic signal of insincerity. Indeed, if you were a directing an actor who was playing a deceptive scene/role - this is one nonverbal signal you'd want them to adopt.

SUMMARY: Rudy Giuliani's nonverbal behavior in this interview indicates that he believes Donald Trump did have a sexual relationship with Stormy Daniels.

Body Language Analysis No. 3642 (Reposting): Did Donald Trump Know Vladimir Putin Prior to The 2016 Election? - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This is a reposting of an analysis originally published on 1 August 2016 (a little more than three months prior to the Presidential Election). The subject of this article is Donald Trump's and Russian President Vladimir Putin's relationship. More specifically, did then-candidate Trump know President Putin?

Updated cross-references at the bottom of the page, the title, and one word ("was" rather than "is") has been changed. The word "verbal" has been added and two added commas have been placed. Otherwise, the remainder of the content is unchanged.

There are many crucial moments in this video. One of particular importance is the issue of any possible relationship between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.

Beginning at 2:16, George Stephanopoulos asks the Republican Candidate for President: "What exactly is your relationship with Vladimir Putin?"

Trump answers: "I have no relationship with Putin. I have no relationship with Putin."

Now, listen again carefully to Trump's response. In his first sentence, as he says the word "relationship", he stretches out his "r" pronunciation. Also, at the end of the word he stutters so that the word sounds like "... rrelationship,ip ...".

Of paramount importance, in his second sentence - Trump's speech trails off when he says, "Putin". The word is spoken much quieter than the other words in the sentence and also when compared to Trump's overwhelming pattern of talking louder than other people around him. Moreover, within speaking that single word, ("Putin") his volume is decrescendoing - subsequently, the end of the word "Putin" can barely be heard.

As he says, "with Putin" in the second sentence, Trump breaks his eye contact with Stephanopoulos. The timing of his looking away is crucial because he is making a declarative statement with the subject of his sentence (Putin) as well as the volume patterns mentioned previously.

Moreover, Trump also looks down to his right. When a momentary drop of eye contact does occur during deception, this is the quadrant to which most right-hand dominant people will most often look (Trump is right-handed).

To review, we see the following behavior clustered during Trump's short answer:

1. Stuttering during word "relationship"
2. Decrescendo/rapidly waning volume with a crucial word ("Putin")
    A. Atypical pattern vs. rest of sentence
    B. Atypical speech pattern for Trump
3. Lack of eye contact during a "Putin"
4. Looking down to the right during "with Putin"

Summary: Donald Trump has a hesitancy to speak both the words, "relationship" - as well as "Putin". He also does not want to look Stephanopoulos in the eye when he says, "Putin". Donald Trump is exhibiting an absolutely classic cluster of paralanguage and nonverbal behaviors which are disparate with his words. Donald Trump believes he has a relationship with Vladimir Putin - and his belief is contradictory with his verbal statement which he made during this interview. Donald Trump was lying.

The next time Steven Spielberg is directing a scene in which an actor is telling a lie - he should look to this example.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3847: Stephen Miller (Senior Advisor to Donald Trump) - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Stephen Miller, a senior advisor to President Trump, has just made the rounds on the Sunday morning talk shows.

Some have commented that they find Mr. Miller "creepy". Why does he elicit these feelings? One reason for this, is that his voice is rather monotone (a property engendered by his reading from a teleprompter). Such lack of vocal variety feels very mechanical and is off-putting.

Another reason for this "creepiness factor" is that Stephen Miller's face is relatively hypo-expressive. Said another way - his face does not move very much when compared with how most other people would express themselves in a similar emotional context.

The most dramatic reason for Mr. Miller's threatening facial expression is his droopy eyelids. The medical term for this is ptosis. And although the cause of his ptosis is unclear, there's a high likelihood it's congenital.

Bilateral ptosis, such as Miller exhibits here, will act as an amplifier for the emotions of contempt, disgust and anger (Disgust is being expressed in the image below). Indeed, even without the presence of other nonverbal signals - bilateral droopy eyelids will project motives of secrecy and elicit distrust in others. It's not surprising that actors with bilateral ptosis will be typecast as antagonists with nefarious motives.

Congenital ptosis is amenable to surgical correction.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3776: VP Elect Mike Pence Defends Trump's Claim of Voter Fraud - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Vice President Elect Mike Pence was a guest on This Week early today. Host George Stephanopoulos pressed the Indiana Governor regarding President Elect Donald Trump's claim of millions cases of voter fraud. From a body language perspective there's an excellent example in this interview of an often seen yet rarely discussed classic facial expression - the "Rationalization Rapport Empathy Expression" (abbreviated R2E2).

During 2:47 - 2:48 in the above video, as Pence says, "...  the, the connection ...", (during the sub-sentence "...  and ahhhh, I, I think ahhh, I think the, the connection that he made in the course his campaign is a reflection of that ...") - Pence displays a classic R2E2 expression (captured below).

The R2E2 is a nonverbal facial expression which can last for very short duration (for a fraction of a second as a "Microexpression" or "Near-Microexpression") - however it may also be present for longer time periods (in this example it last for approximately 0.9 seconds). Most body language rookies will confuse the R2E2 with the expression (and thus also the emotion) of disgust - yet these two nonverbals have completely different meanings.

It's important to note that while every emotionally-healthy person displays the Rationalization Rapport Empathy Expression on occasion - when it is seen, and especially when it's displayed more often frequently, you would be well-advised to contemplate each of the following:

  • What do my instincts tell me of this person's motive(s) in this moment?
  • Does this person seem like they believe what they are saying?
  • On what idea/opinion (very specifically), are they trying to persuade me?
  • What is my "gut feeling" of their sincerity in this moment?
  • If I could pick one emotion of theirs to describe the moment, what would it be?
  • Are my own emotions causing me to be biased?
  • Do I feel as if they are putting extra effort into trying to sell me on their idea or opinion?
  • Does it seem as if they showing me their "Achilles Heel" too easily?
  • Is there a specific weakness of theirs which is being discussed?

A very high percentage of the time, people who are displaying the R2E2 are trying to rationalize - AND are trying (subconsciously and consciously) to get you to CO-rationalize. They're trying to convince you (as well as their own psyche) of an idea or opinion in which they do not themselves' believe (or don't fully believe). Be careful when you see the R2E2 Expression - because it's seen when others are trying too hard to gain your rapport, trust and empathy.

Summary: Although every human being displays the R2E2 on occasion - but when you see it used too frequently (or during a particularly crucial portion of a conversation) - fed flags have been raised (Can you see them?).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3629: Donald Trump's interview regarding Melania's Speech and Plagiarism - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Wednesday morning Donald Trump spoke directly for first time regarding Melania's speech and the issue of plagiarism.

What follows is a nonverbal analysis of the Republican Presidential Candidate at some key moments during this exchange.

George Stephanopoulos (beginning at 0:10): "How 'bout this speech by Melania? We learned today that ah,  someone that works with you, a Meredith McIver, offered her resignation. Why not accept it? Weren't you angry?"

Trump: "She [j]ust made a mistake. And I thought it was terrific they way she came forward and just said, 'Look, it was a mistake that I made' - aaaand she thought it was very unfair to Melania. Although [hard swallow] - interestingly, the press treated Melania very well, because they didn't think it was her."

0:12 - Donald Trump displays a Jaw Jut with a prolonged blink as George Stephanopoulos is saying, "... learned today ...". This nonverbal cluster indicates Anger coupled with "Blocking Behavior".

Candidate Trump displays a Tongue Jut (more specifically a "Tight Forward Tongue Jut) during 0:15 as George says, "... Meredith McIver ...". This is similar both in appearance and emotion to an infant pushing out food with his tongue he doesn't want to eat - he is repulsed and disgusted.

During 0:15 - 0:16, Mr. Trump makes this expression as Stephanopoulos says, "... offered her resignation ...". Although his closed eyelids open back up part way through this statement  - we see his "Inward Lip Roll (ILR) with a clenched jaw persist longer. This is a classic nonverbal cluster revealing that Mr. Trump is trying to suppress his anger.

It may be difficult to tell, however the candidate's overall posture indicates he is standing with his feet close together - which is an unusual configuration for Donald Trump. This foot positioning both indicates and engenders lower confidence, lower assertiveness and a beta emotional tone.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2608: Ryan Ferguson's Release From Prison - and the Self Righteous Jaw Wiggle (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Ryan Ferguson was released last week from prison. He had served 10 years for a murder he did not commit. In this interview here by George Stephanopoulos, Ryan is seated next to his father, Bill Ferguson.

During the 2:21 - 2:32 segment, Bill can be seen moving his jaw (mandible) back and forth in what is known as a "Self-Righteous Jaw Wiggle". Here we see it in isolation, however this highly characteristic nonverbal is usually clustered with the either the "Self-Righteous Torso Wiggle", the "Self-Righteous Head Wiggle" - or both.

This body language is subconsciously directed and indicative of a high-alpha emotional tone and is nearly always accompanied by a definitive and assertive statement. It is displayed by those who feel they are in a position to carry out their plans (whether they be open and straightforward as in this scenario ... or  clandestine as in others). This example is somewhat unusual and rarely captured because the person speaking is not the same person who is displaying the body language - yet this demonstrates that "father and son are of one mind".

Congratulations Ryan.
