Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3618: Salma Hayek regarding Donald Trump - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

It turns out Donald Trump and Salma Hayek know each other. Ms. Hayek was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! earlier this year and the exchange in the video above provides some excellent body language teaching examples. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis.

Kimmel (beginning at 0:12): "Have you sp- (stutter) have you ever spoken to him?"
Hayek: "Yes, yes, I've known him for a long time."

This body language display is known as a "Hair Adjustment Behind the Ear" (HABE). It's seen more commonly manifested with women and gay men - and even though it's seen a bit more commonly in those with longer hair, it's also a frequent nonverbal in those with short hair. This is a signal of the psyche actively up-regulating its alpha status - as if to say, "I am going to need to be more assertive now."

Kimmel (beginning at 0:16): "Oh you have!"
Hayek: "Yeah, yeah."

As she says, "Yeah, yeah" - Salma has a classic Disgust expression on her face (above).

Hayek (beginning at 0:44): "I, You know, I don't think - he listens to - to me. No."
Kimmel: "You don't think he would listen to you, yeah."
Hayek: "No. It's - you don't need to talk sense into him. Everyone's entitled to their own madness - You need to talk sense into the people who are not seeing the madness."
[Audience: laughter, clapping, whooping]
Kimmel: "He can use a little of it too while we're at it."
Hayek: "It won't make any difference that way."

During the end of this exchange, as Salma says, "any difference that way" - note that her central forehead is contracted and elevated (Elevated CFC). When this forehead configuration is seen in conjunction with any semblance of a "Mouth Smile" - this combination dictates one of three thought-emotions (depending on the other nonverbals with which it's clustered). It's important to point out that such a smile is NEVER a sincere one of Joy-Happiness (Duchenne Smile). In this context, this mouth smile + CFC is indicative of incredulity. Ms. Hayek is transmitting a strong disbelief that talking sense into Donald Trump would be possible.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3617: President Obama and Speaker Ryan regarding the Dallas Shooting - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In the above video President Barack Obama is speaking about the shooting in Dallas on Thursday. Paul Ryan, the Speaker of the House, is giving a similar speech in the video included below.

Note that both men, who normally use their hands and arms significantly during other speaking events, here use them minimally. 

Although an experience politician, Mr. Ryan has had less tragic occasions at which to speak than has the President. Ryan uses his hands and arms in the beginning of his speech but then rapidly curtails their use to essentially nil. Mr. Obama hardly uses his hands and arms at all. 





During funerals, when speaking about recent death, the receiving of soldiers' remains, and similar events, minimal use of the hands is good body language advice - for it transmits much more reverence and respect for the deceased. This lack of hand and arm gestures also conveys more empathy.
 

During the vast majority of occasions, lack of hand and arm use may very signal suspicion and/or low confidence or emotional discomfort - but not here - not when speaking with respect for the fallen.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3615: Store Owner Abdullah Muflahi Interview regarding the Shooting of Alton Sterling - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Mr. Abdullah Muflahi is the store owner at the location where Alton Sterling was shot and killed by police officers two days ago. He witnessed the incident - and he also videoed it. That video of the shooting is not included here - only one in which Abdullah Muflahi is interviewed.

Naturally, now Mr. Muflahi is in the National (and even international) spotlight. 

Here is but one key teaching point: Scratching or rubbing at or near the top of the head (with or without the removal of a hat) is a signal of Honest Anxiety. This nonverbal display is essentially never associated with deception. Note that at no time did Abdullah Muflahi touch his face.

Although Mr. Muflahi does display several nonverbal anxiety signals - his body language, facial expressions, words and paralanguage are consistent with him telling the truth. Only a small percentage of people could display this level of composure during an interview after witnessing such an event.

Take home point: Abdullah Muflahi is being honest in his description of his eyewitness account of the shooting of Alton Sterling.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3614: Daniel Radcliffe, Imperium and a Subtle Body Language Tell (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In the upcoming film, Imperium, Daniel Radcliffe plays the part of undercover FBI agent trying to prevent a Neo-Nazi terrorist group from deploying a bomb.

Many actors get subtle expressions wrong. They very often put on a more extreme expression where more moderate or subtle examples would be more contextual and proportionate to many scenes. What follows however are several specific examples where Radcliffe triumphs at these more mild expressions.

Radcliffe's character (Nate Foster) is pictured here sitting in a vehicle.  His mouth is slightly opened in a variation of a "slack jawed" configuration (indicating emotional shock).

Note that his head/neck is tilted down. Radcliffe is staring forward and down - and more specifically focused on the middle distance. This is focusing past or looking through near objects also indicates emotional shock and emotional processing. The actor is showing us that his character's mind knows has just gleaned some shocking information, but his emotional brain has yet to fully grasp the ramifications.

This nonverbal cluster/facial expression is under-utilized by many actors and directors.

In the image above we see exemplified a subtle Elevated Central Forehead Contraction (elevated CFC). Very few actors are able to display this crucial nonverbal signal - although in the real world this slight facial dynamic (often short lived as well) speaks volumes about the presence of physical or emotional pain (either felt directly or experienced secondarily via empathy).

Slicing this expression even thinner, what specific emotional pain emotion is Radcliffe acting in this moment?

Three seconds later, Radcliffe's elevated CFC is more pronounced - perhaps a 6 or 7 (on a zero to 10 scale). Although more developed than the image at 1:00, this example is still somewhat less developed than many actors express (It's as if they only have a "full on" or "full off" forehead contraction).

In this last photo, Daniel Radcliffe's elevated CFC is even more subtle that the first example. Also look at the actor's eyes. His head is looking forward/slight to his left and yet his eyes are moving to his right. When we don't look directly at person, but only tract with our eyes - it's a signal that we don't like, don't respect or don't believe/don't trust the person at whom were looking.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3612: Sam Querrey defeats Novak Djokovic at Wimbeldon - Body Language (PHOTO)

 







Sam Querrey upset Novak Djokovic in the third round of Wimbledon last week (7–6^(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 7–6^(7–5)). Querrey was ranked 28th in the World while Djokovic's ranking was 1st. Djokovic had also won his previous thirty grand slam matches. 

From a body language perspective, note the configuration of the two men's torsos at the end of the match. Querrey, the victor, leans into the "handshake", whereas Djokovic's torso is leaning slightly backward. Sam Querrey even leans over the while Djokovic's hand only comes up to the plane of the net. And although Djokovic is certainly an alpha male, in this moment Querrey is, understandably, displaying an even greater alpha status (thus Djokovic, in this context, is the Beta). The loser will rarely lean in during an after-match congratulation.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3611: Salma Hayek, Danny Trejo and a Tattoo - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Salma Hayek sure can tell a story. The one she tells here is hilarious and very much worth the watch. The skilled actress also demonstrates many body language tells - one of which is delineated below.

Notice Ms. Hayek is sitting on her left leg with her left foot all the way up on the coach. This is a signal of significant emotional comfort. Despite her being on The Graham Norton Show with a such a dynamic host and other guests - she is very much at ease during this story.

This is yet another example of the nonverbal communication axiom, that in order for a configuration of the body to be PHYSICALLY comfortable - it must FIRST be EMOTIONALLY comfortable.

Another valuable take-home point here is suppose, that if upon being asked a question or a subject being raised, a person moved out of this comfortable leg configuration and placed both feet flat on the floor - you would know that the issue being raised or question being asked had struck a nerve of anxiety. In such a scenario, this leg position change would often be accompanied by a subtle fear expression on the face (e.g., slightly wider eyelid opening, an inward lip roll, etc.) and/or one hand scratching or holding the opposite arm or back of the head.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3610: Star Swain sings The Star-Spangled Banner at the Lincoln Memorial - Why Do Singers Close Their Eyes? - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Throughout her very moving, impromptu and now very viral rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner inside the Lincoln Memorial, Star Swain (like many singers) kept her eyelids closed. But just why do people close their eyes when they sing?

Most people don't realize that 90% of our sensory input is visual in nature. The remaining 10% has to be shared by the senses of hearing, smell, taste and touch. It's also fascinating that 40% of the mass of the human brain is dedicated to vision. One benefit of closing our eyes is that there's a temporary mild reduction of blood, nutrients and neurological activity in the brain's visual center - and an up-regulation of these qualities in the remaining 60% of the brain. Thus the other four senses, along with the emotional and cognitive portions of the brain gain some temporary sensitivity.

Provided there is a relatively high level of affection, the vast majority of the time we close our eyes while we hug another person (or animal). This is because during eye closure - we quickly increase our ability to feel affection even more deeply. We love that person, and when we hug them we want to feel it more. A similar phenomenon occurs when we taste a delicious dessert or smell a favorite flower, etc. It is not just our imagination that the chocolate tastes better - it really does taste better when our eyes are closed.

Even a person with excellent vision will instantaneously increase their sense of touch a - by just closing their eyes.

Singing a song well is not only a very multi-sensory experience - it's a deeply emotional experience. Closing one's eyes while singing leads to increased auditory acuity and improved vocal control - which when acting together is a type of biofeedback. While singing this also enhances concentration and bringing some performance to a level of self-hypnosis as well as method acting. This allows the singer to express a great amount of energy in the moment as it becomes a larger-than-life experience. This entire behavioral cluster acts as a contagion and pulls us into Star Swain's emotions.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3609: Emma Watson, Tina Turner, Ring Tones and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTO)

We always love embarrassing moments when it comes to celebrities. These occasions serve to make them more human. Showing their flaws endears them to us - and thus they build rapport with their fan base (although of course, they don't necessarily feel this way in the moment).

During a recent interview discussing her role as Belle in upcoming film, The Beauty and the Beast, Emma Watson's phone rang - revealing her Tina Turner, Steamy Windows ring tone.

During 0:58 - 0:59, Emma's surprise is revealed by her vertically opened, oval mouth configuration. Her simultaneous closed eyes/extended blink is an emotional blocking behavior - similar to her arm crossing (below).

During 1:10 - 1:12, Emma Crosses her arms in a moment of emotional discomfort and low confidence.  Although she's a very skilled and accomplished actor, she is of course, only human. During moments of embarrassment (additionally revealed here by Ms. Watson's blushing plus her suppressed yet sincere smile), it's natural we will very often see a "drawing in" of the limbs for "protection". Of course it's not a physical protection here - but an emotional one.

People often will say, "I'm crossing my arms because I'm more comfortable this way". And while there certainly are such moments dictated by physical comfort, but always remember - our PHYSICAL comfort is dictated by what first makes us EMOTIONALLY comfortable - not the other way around.

Another nuance here is Emma's right hand (she's right hand dominant) is positioned beneath her left arm - which further underlines her temporary low confidence. It's also noteworthy that just after this moment (1:13) there is an skip/discontinuity in the video - which most likely indicates there were other nonverbal anxiety tells (along with verbal and paralanguage signals) which where edited-out.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3608: Attorney General Loretta Lynch on Meeting with Bill Clinton - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Within the above video, there is a segment where U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch comments on her recent meeting with Bill Clinton at Phoenix's Sky Harbor Airport (during 0:53 - 1:01 and 1:05 - 1:09).

Many have emailed and inquired as to whether Loretta Lynch is being truthful. While this video segment has been truncated by ABC, from a nonverbal behavior perspective, Ms. Lynch was indeed telling the truth. There are no body language signals of deception.

There were however two microexpressions occurring simultaneously - one of contempt and another of anger.

Beginning at 1:06 as Ms. Lynch says, "... There was no discussion of Benghazi, no discussion of the state department emails ..."

Just as Ms. Lynch finishes saying the first "of" and continuing to the first part of the word "Benghazi" - there is an excellent example of a very brief lowering of the region between her eyebrows/upper portion of nose. This is indicative of one type of a microexpression of anger. Simultaneous with this we can also see a very short-lived curling up of her right lip and a contraction of the region above her right upper lip and below her right nostril. This is one variation of a microexpression of contempt.

We cannot say the precise reason for these emotions - they could have been for the reporter asking the question, the specific question he asked - or the way in which he asked it (perhaps including the body language he projected as well). Yet many would say most probably Loretta Lynch felt these emotions in response to the idea that anyone would insinuate that she was conducting herself in anything less than an ethical manner.

In retrospect, most (including Loretta Lynch and Bill Clinton) would say that this meeting was a bad idea. Many would also say that the appearance of impropriety sometimes may do just as much damage as true impropriety - at least from a public relations perspective. Political spin is of course running rampant - but for those interested in what Ms. Lynch's nonverbal behavior says here - she was telling the truth.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3607: Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, Dating Rumors and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

It was revealed on Thursday that Mika Brzezinski has managed to recently complete a divorce in a rather under-the-radar fashion. Her Morning Joe co-host, Joe Scarborough, went through a divorce three years earlier. It's also been rumored the two are dating.

Along these lines, there is a very obvious and classic nonverbal display exampled in the video segment above. And while it's not definitive for a clandestine relationship, it is strongly suggestive of it.

Duping delight is a nonverbal behavior wherein a sincere smile (aka a Duchenne smile) is displayed - yet partially suppressed (to a varying degree).  One way this occurs is via a partial hand covering. This is response to the joy some people feel when it is believed they have perpetrated a successful deception. What is seen here is a variation on this theme. Joe Scarborough smiles sincerely - but also partially during the following dialog:

Mika Brzezinski: "Can I get to the lead story now?"

Joe Scarborough: [over-talking] "By the way, there's, there's, there are a lot of lead stories today but why don't we start with the Trump lead story."

Mika: [over-talking]: "I will finish your sentence and start with politics."

The two hosts were fairly specifically poking fun at the rumors that they were dating. Mika did a better job at suppressing her smile than did Joe. If their relationship were only platonic, and they were simply exercising self-deprecating humor, there would be much less impetus to suppress a smile. The fact that Scarborough felt the need to bring a glass to his mouth - (a classic example of a MAP surrogate [Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier]) - in order to assist in the direct suppression of his smile, strongly suggests that the romantic rumors are true.

If there were nothing to drink and Scarborough instead put his hand to his mouth in an otherwise similar manner, what would you think such a gesture would indicate?

The act of putting a glass/cup to one's mouth and drinking will give the person camouflage, time and a direct mechanical interruption so that the smile/laugh cycle can be partially or completely broken. 

It's also a red flag that the "lead story" the two jokingly allude to - is their alleged love-relationship, rather than her divorce (for among other things, with regard to what the public KNOWS to be true - her divorce is fact, while their affair is still speculation).
