Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3801: Marion Cotillard, Lip Syncing and Honest Anxiety - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During Marion Cotilliard's recent guest appearance on The Graham Norton Show, the accomplished actor was asked to lip sync a portion of Non, je ne regrette rien. Perhaps you were fooled into believing (as were many others) that she truly sang it during her Academy Award winning performance (Best Actress 2007) as Édith Piaf in La Vie en rose.

As she did not anticipate Norton's request (2:15 in the video above), Ms. Cotilliard felt unprepared and she responded with, "Oh shit". Immediately after this she reached up with her left hand and scratched the right side of her forehead.

This is an excellent example of a nonverbal signal for "Honest Anxiety". That is to say, when you see this body language displayed, you can be certain that the person doing so is feeling anxiety - and in addition, there's a very low probability they are attempting deception.

If Marion would have not reached across her forehead - and instead scratched on the same side, this would have indicated a relatively lower level of nervousness.

There are many different nonverbal displays indicative of honest anxiety. Can you name any others? How does one differentiate these from deception-related nervousness?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3637: President Obama's Speech at the DNC, Hillary Clinton and Anxiety - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Most experienced politicians rarely touch their face or any place else on their head (or neck). Last night at the Democratic National Convention however, in the midst of his endorsement of Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama committed one of these fundamental body language mistakes.

Continuing at 12:54 in the above video, President Obama says, " ... Now, eight years ago ... [laughs] ... that's right .... Let me tell ya'. Eight years ago, you may remember, Hillary and I were rivals for the democratic nomination...".

During 12:55 - 12:57, as he says, "... eight years ago ...", Barack scratches in back of and below his right ear. The point of contact is very often the Mastoid Process (protuberance or "bump" behind the ear) or just in front of or below it. In nonverbal parlance, scratching or rubbing another part of the body is termed a MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor or Pacifier) and, the vast majority of the time, it's at least in some measure, indicative of anxiety. This example is no exception. Yet to further nuance the meaning behind this nonverbal signal here - it indicates an "Honest Anxiety" - or said another way, anxiety which is NOT associated with deception.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3615: Store Owner Abdullah Muflahi Interview regarding the Shooting of Alton Sterling - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Mr. Abdullah Muflahi is the store owner at the location where Alton Sterling was shot and killed by police officers two days ago. He witnessed the incident - and he also videoed it. That video of the shooting is not included here - only one in which Abdullah Muflahi is interviewed.

Naturally, now Mr. Muflahi is in the National (and even international) spotlight. 

Here is but one key teaching point: Scratching or rubbing at or near the top of the head (with or without the removal of a hat) is a signal of Honest Anxiety. This nonverbal display is essentially never associated with deception. Note that at no time did Abdullah Muflahi touch his face.

Although Mr. Muflahi does display several nonverbal anxiety signals - his body language, facial expressions, words and paralanguage are consistent with him telling the truth. Only a small percentage of people could display this level of composure during an interview after witnessing such an event.

Take home point: Abdullah Muflahi is being honest in his description of his eyewitness account of the shooting of Alton Sterling.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3544: John Kasich's Honest Anxiety - Body Language (PHOTOS)

This is an image of John Kasich in Glastonbury, Connecticut on 22 April 2016. Scratching or rubbing the back of the head is highly correlated with "Honest Anxiety". That is to say, although Governor Kasich is certainly feeling anxiety here - there is no deception occurring.

Touching, rubbing or scratching the face in particular places (do you know where?) is correlated with lying. It's profoundly important to note that in order to have high reliability, these deception tells should be clustered simultaneously (or nearly so) with other nonverbal signals, paralanguage and verbal language. However, when these MAPs (Manipulators, Adaptors, Pacifiers) involve the back (or top) of the head - or the back of the neck - the anxiety is real - and so is the sincerity.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3376: Liam Hemsworth, The Hunger Games and "Honest Anxiety" - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Liam Hemsworth carried Jennifer Lawrence's purse on The Great Wall of China - and you may find that part of this video entertaining. Yet what's more instructive, is to watch a professional actor such as Hemsworth - who is paid well to suspend our disbelief (and who's rather good at it) - when he's just being himself. That is to say, even those who are skilled at acting-lying, when they're back in their own skin, just being themselves - their body language projects their sincere feelings (e.g. they can't deceive any better than average).

At the beginning of the video Jimmy Kimmel says: "So this is the ah .... fourth now, and the most significantly, final time, you'll be traveling the World promoting The Hunger Games."

Hemsworth: "This is the last one."

Kimmel: "Is it bitter-sweet for you?"

Hemsworth: "Yeah, it is. Yeah I mean it's. You know, it's, it's, it's the end of a, a great journey and I think we all had a good time. But ah, I think we're just sad not to tour the World together. I think that's, that's one of the funnest parts of all because we're such good friends."

During the 0:11 to 0:15 segment we see Liam Hemsworth scratch/rub behind his right ear, first with his index finger (forefinger) and then with two fingers. 

This rubbing/scratching on the "bump" behind the right ear (the mastoid process) is indicative of "honest anxiety". Said another way, this nonverbal signal transmits anxiety and quite importantly has a very low likelihood of associated deception. 

Therefore in this specific example, Hemsworth's verbal message is very congruent with his nonverbal signal (as well as with his paralanguage) - so in this context, Hemsworth has a high sincerity quotient.

There is a myriad of other nonverbal signals in this video - how many did you see? What if Hemsworth were scratching/rubbing his ear (rather than behind it) - what would that signify? In front of his ear?
