Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3690: Stan Wawrinka beats Novak Djokovic to win US Open - Body Language & Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Stan Wawrinka beat Novak Djokovic to win his first US Open on Sunday. As he recounts, Wawrinka began using the gesture shown below a few years ago when he also beat Djokovic - but in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.

From a body language perspective (depending on the other nonverbal signs with which it is clustered) this is a variety of an "Emblem" - although in some scenarios it may be an "Illustrator" or a "MAP" (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier).

When pointing at one's temple simultaneously while looking at another person after a particularly good play, point, performance, etc., (usually for somewhat of a prolonged duration in a stare or modified stare), this nonverbal cluster functions as form of a "game face" for intimidation. Somewhat overlapping with this, it can also mean, "I've got you figured out" or "I'm smarter than you".

Yet when the same nonverbal sign is used while looking instead at the audience, this same emblem then primarily indicates a strong mental focus or mental strength.

In either scenario it also acts as positive feedback loop serving to amplify the positive feelings and reinforce the memory, thus making it more likely for its user to emotionally, mentally and physically re-create the experience in the future.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3612: Sam Querrey defeats Novak Djokovic at Wimbeldon - Body Language (PHOTO)

 







Sam Querrey upset Novak Djokovic in the third round of Wimbledon last week (7–6^(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 7–6^(7–5)). Querrey was ranked 28th in the World while Djokovic's ranking was 1st. Djokovic had also won his previous thirty grand slam matches. 

From a body language perspective, note the configuration of the two men's torsos at the end of the match. Querrey, the victor, leans into the "handshake", whereas Djokovic's torso is leaning slightly backward. Sam Querrey even leans over the while Djokovic's hand only comes up to the plane of the net. And although Djokovic is certainly an alpha male, in this moment Querrey is, understandably, displaying an even greater alpha status (thus Djokovic, in this context, is the Beta). The loser will rarely lean in during an after-match congratulation.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 1875: Nadal defeats Djokovic at French Open - Disgust + Anger Expression from Novak

Rafael Nadal just won his record seventh French Open at Roland Garros today Defeating Novak Djokovic in four sets, 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Nadal, who now has 11 Major wins to his credit, prevented Djokovic from becoming the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 from winning four consecutive majors. During the close-up of Novak at the 2:21 - 2:29 segment of this video, a classic but subtle nonverbal expression of disgust can be seen with the addition of some mild anger. Take particular note of the flaring of his nostrils and the tightening of his mid-face, particularly the "mustache area". In addition, Djokovic's eyebrows are drawn together and pulled downwards. There is also a bilateral partial closing of his eyelids - consistent with a "squint" of mild anger.

In the photograph below, which was taken at earlier match at this year's French Open, Djokovic gives a great body language display of thinning of the lips, particular of the upper lip - which is a highly indicative signal of anger. Note how very horizontally straight the lips are in this moment of anger.
