Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3609: Emma Watson, Tina Turner, Ring Tones and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTO)

We always love embarrassing moments when it comes to celebrities. These occasions serve to make them more human. Showing their flaws endears them to us - and thus they build rapport with their fan base (although of course, they don't necessarily feel this way in the moment).

During a recent interview discussing her role as Belle in upcoming film, The Beauty and the Beast, Emma Watson's phone rang - revealing her Tina Turner, Steamy Windows ring tone.

During 0:58 - 0:59, Emma's surprise is revealed by her vertically opened, oval mouth configuration. Her simultaneous closed eyes/extended blink is an emotional blocking behavior - similar to her arm crossing (below).

During 1:10 - 1:12, Emma Crosses her arms in a moment of emotional discomfort and low confidence.  Although she's a very skilled and accomplished actor, she is of course, only human. During moments of embarrassment (additionally revealed here by Ms. Watson's blushing plus her suppressed yet sincere smile), it's natural we will very often see a "drawing in" of the limbs for "protection". Of course it's not a physical protection here - but an emotional one.

People often will say, "I'm crossing my arms because I'm more comfortable this way". And while there certainly are such moments dictated by physical comfort, but always remember - our PHYSICAL comfort is dictated by what first makes us EMOTIONALLY comfortable - not the other way around.

Another nuance here is Emma's right hand (she's right hand dominant) is positioned beneath her left arm - which further underlines her temporary low confidence. It's also noteworthy that just after this moment (1:13) there is an skip/discontinuity in the video - which most likely indicates there were other nonverbal anxiety tells (along with verbal and paralanguage signals) which where edited-out.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2814: Ukraine, Pro-Russian Separatists, Bilateral Eyelid Closure and Emotional Processing - Body Language Tells

This Russian separatist in Odessa (in Western Ukraine) is shown here with his finger on the trigger of a gun. His arm is extended with elbow locked and he is barking orders. Note that both of his eyelids are closed. This valuable nonverbal signal of an "extended blink" in this context signifies that the emotional brain is attempting to block his emotional crescendo. The compassionate and empathy driven side of this man's psyche does not want to be pointing a gun at anyone - and yet he is. He is trying to momentarily not-be-quite-so-human and shut off his emotions. The degree to which he does - or doesn't do so controls whether or not he pulls the trigger.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2260: 'Top Chef' host Padma Lakshmi regarding New Delhi's recent gang-rape, Indian Culture and Sexual-Physical Harassment -Body Language Nuance

Top Chef host, the beautiful Padma Lakshmi recently spoke out regarding the gang rape of an Indian woman in New Delhi. Time for some body language nuance ....

At the 0:02 second mark in this video (and at multiple other times in this short excerpt of a longer interview), she mentions "...it disgusted me", however the classic nonverbal expression of disgust was not expressed on her face at this time. Was she lying? No. First Padma was recounting what she had initially felt/thought upon hearing about the rape. Secondly, although her words said "disgusted", a more general negative emotion (which included many emotions) was conveyed in her body language - that of emotional blocking & emotional processing. For also at the 0:02 mark she displays a prolonged eyelid closure which together in this nonverbal cluster-context is her psyche attempting to block the "memory" of the event from her perspective (exhibition of high empathy) - her hearing about it, recalling her memories of harassment as a youth (which she recounts a few seconds later) when she had lived in India and the empathy she felt/feels for the victim/other similar victims. Ms. Lakshmi's simultaneous head/neck thrust forward as she said "disgusted" and exhibited this prolonged eyelid closure is an example of an illustrator which serves to add emphasis and is also part of this body language cluster. 

Not all prolonged eyelid closure indicates empathy and/or blocking unpleasant memories. Can you tell the difference?

There are several other nonverbal great examples included in this video as well. Freeze frame at both 0:04 very end - at 0:52 and you'll see her eyelids open wider than normal with some mid-face tightening as well as some subtle mouth configuration of fear This body language-facial expression is a display of fear. At this moment she is reliving a memory and re-experiencing a portion of that fear. 

Padma Lakshmi certainly has quite high Sincerity & Empathy Coefficients. She has spent a good deal of time reliving unpleasant memories and to a degree, putting herself in the shoes of the New Delhi gang-rape victim.
