Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2456:
Julia Merfeld Trys to Hire a Hit Man to Kill Her Husband -
Sexual Attraction and a Murderous Wife;
Body Language and Disinhibition
(Video, Photos)

Julia Merfeld, a Jersey girl transplanted to Muskegon, Michigan recently met with and then hired who she thought was a hit man to kill her husband. She was undoubtedly motivated by his $400,000 life insurance policy. The video above is a slightly edited amalgamation of two different meetings with an undercover police officer. What follows is a PARTIAL analysis of some of Ms. Merfeld's body language.

The under-cover police officer, either by habit or design, places his palm-up when Merfeld first gets into the car (a very beta, submissive and demure position). This allows the Sociopath to have her hand on top - the dominant and assertive position. This nonverbal configuration "feeds" her ego and thus engenders increased alpha emotions. It gives her a false sense of security. He repeats this body language later.

In addition the officer grips Merfeld's hand in a manner to increase her feelings of femininity - rather than a more traditional palm-to-palm business/platonic handshake.

Although not exemplified here in its full extension (not in full display here) this armpit exposure has qualities of sexual display/attraction. When a woman's armpits are actively exposed - it is highly indicative of sexual attraction.

This bilateral "Hair Adjust Behind Ear" nonverbal (fully seen in video) is indicative of Ms. Merfeld "Dialing Up Her Alpha". Her psyche needs to be more assertive - she's about to hire (who she believes to be) a hit man.

If this display were purely a non-sexual alpha amplifier, the armpits would be less exposed. If it were purely sexual, the armpits would be more exposed. It has components of both.

In this classic neck & hair preening, eyelid closure with a partial blush - Ms. Merfeld further displays her attraction for her "hero hit man".

In this image, Ms. Merfeld is seen in her continued full-blushed face, with a sincere smile, still touching behind her ear (MAP: Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) and her hips are trusted forward in a sexual display analog (see video for this dynamic display).

Along with the above nonverbals, this body language cluster is highly indicative of sexual attraction. She is flirting with her hit man in the first few seconds of meeting the man who she would have kill her betrothed.

People who exhibit a strong disinhibition behavior (e.g. plotting a murder) also will often experience and thus display other other disinhibitory behaviors (here she is sexually drawn to the man she is hiring).

Ms. Merfeld displays a mild microexpression/near-microexpression of fear (primarily in her mouth) when she thinks-feels for a moment that perhaps she will have trouble paying the hit man (she needs her husband's life insurance policy money in order to pay him).

At 5:41 there is an excellent example of a subtle microexpression of "Duping Delight" as she hands a picture of her husband over to the undercover cop. In this very brief expression she "leaks" out her joy in her belief that she will soon be rid of her husband.

At 6:14 as soon as she hands over an initial payment - her mid-face tightens, her nostrils dilate and her mouth briefly displays an expression of "pseudo-smile of regret". This is not a very good angle to view this mouth display (but how her nostrils flare!).

For an extended period towards the end of this second meeting, Ms. Merfeld pulls her sleeves up over her hands. This is a classic MAP surrogate and is highly indicative of anxiety. It is much more commonly seen in children, teens and young adults (Merfeld is 21) - and women more than men.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2455:
Eliot Spitzer's Running for Office
Asymmetry in the Facial Expression, Sincerity &
Norah O'Donnell's Not Just Another Pretty Face
(Video, Photos)

Eliot Spitzer, former Attorney General and Governor of New York who resigned in 2008 in a prostitution scandal, announced yesterday he is running for Comptroller of New York City. In the above video he appeared on CBS This Morning.

Of particular note is a common nonverbal phenomenon seen in those who are insincere. In the first photo - and appearing repeatedly in the above video - the former Governor has an asymmetric mouth. While all asymmetric mouth displays are not insincere in nature (e.g. contempt, regret) a repeated facial expression of this type is highly suspect.

As a profession, asymmetric mouth displays are seen much more often in politicians compared with the general population.

In this same interview, Spitzer in addition to his asymmetric mouth - also shows his audience an asymmetric forehead contraction. This one-sided forehead muscular action is indicative of incredulity and doubt. When someone is trying to sell you something - or solicit your vote, such an expression should raise a bold red flag.

Early in the video clip, Norah O'Donnell asks the former Governor, "...Why do you think people should trust you or like you?" her face displays a very brief but distinctive expression of both disgust and contempt. Her momentarily partially closed upper eyelids are a signal of contempt and indeed amplify the effect of her mid-face tightening and her subtle nostril dilation. There is also mild tension of Ms. O'Donnell's mid-face and her head-neck-torso are tilted away from Spitzer. In addition her head is extended even further in relationship to her neck giving the "up-turned nose" that is strongly associated with disgust.

In this photo-capture Norah O'Donnell displays a facial expression of anger. Notable is the foreshortening of her mouth (left to right width is temporarily shortened). Greater tension is present and contraction is also seen in the area above her upper lip and below her nose. Ms. O'Donnell's eyelids are opened slightly wider than her baseline normal and her inner (medial) eyebrows are also lowered in this moment. Both images of Ms. O'Donnell are very brief and are missed by most.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2454:
NTSB Chairwoman Deborah Hersman & a
Subtle "Neck of Fear"
(Video, Photos)

Deborah Hersman, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman, gave another press conference today in which she described some of the events just prior to the crash landing of Asiana flight 214 at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday. Ms. Hersman is a very capable and experienced speaker. She also does a better job than most at suppressing any emotion expressions. Yet at the 0:48 mark she displays an evanescent  "Neck of Fear" - with virtually no manifestation of fear on her face. Although not of short enough duration to be classified as a microexpression - this nonverbal example it is quite brief.

Note the "tenting up" of Chairwoman Hersman's neck. These are due to contractions of the playtsma and the sternocleidomastoid muscles. The only emotion in which these neck muscles contract in this fashion is fear. This signal is overlooked by all but the most observant.

We cannot specifically say why Deborah  Hersman was feeling fear in this moment. It could be that she has a bit of stage fright. Many good speakers would be at least a bit frightened if they were in her shoes.

Another probable reason for her fear here is she is putting herself in the point of view of passengers on the plane. Her empathy for the victims gives her a brief but very real experience of fear.

In this similar head position captured from a few seconds earlier, Ms. Hersman's neck muscles are relaxed. Her emotions are neutral and she is not feeling any fear in this moment.

While most people can identify extreme examples of emotion, it's amazing how few can identify moderate let alone mild examples of emotional expression. This is a great example of a subtle fear display. The ability to catch these very mild nonverbal signals will give you a huge advantage in both your business and personal life.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2453:
Adrian Peterson on Jimmy Fallon -
Body Language & Recalling Past Significant Emotional Events
(Video, Photos)

During Adrian Peterson's recent appearance on Jimmy Fallon's show, the star running back recounted an experience of anaphylaxis.

When significant emotional events are being initially experienced or being recalled (and thus to a degree re-experienced) a hand-to-mouth & nose cover are extremely common (3:34 - 3:35). It is more often (virtually 100% of the time) and more prolonged during the initial experience.

This particular MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) in this specific cluster-context is very consistent with a "High Empathy Quotient". Therefore it is unusual to see this body language in a narcissist and almost never seen in a person with sociopath qualities. In other contexts this body language can have a completely different meaning - what are these other contexts and what do they convey?

What other nonverbal is seen during 3:35 - 3:38? What does this body language indicate in this cluster-context?

During 3:36-3:37 Mr. Peterson displays a partial fear mouth with the corners of his mouth pulled back and his lower teeth exposed. A more full fear mouth expression would expose his upper teeth with a more extreme pull-back of the mouth corners.

Note Adrian's eyes are opened momentarily wider than normal as well as the entire width of his forehead is contracted. All of these facial expression qualities are consistent with fear. He is recalling a moment of sincere fear. In the evanescent re-living of the event his psyche and thus his physiology are behaving in a similar but lesser manner compared with the primary event.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2452:
Marion Bartoli, Wimbledon and Short Dresses -
Body Language of an Apology-Confessional
(Video, Photos)

Marion Bartoli won the Women's Singles Championships today at Wimbledon, besting Sabine Lisicki 6-1, 6-4. It was her first tournament victory in a Grand Slam event. In the interview (video above) she exhibits a common yet rarely sited nonverbal display indicative of an Apology-Confessional. Near the end of the video interview Amanda Davies asks Ms. Bartoli, "Have you got your dress?" (for the Wimbledon Ball). Marion replies, "I do, ahhhhh ..., it's, it's kind of a short one though but ahh (short laugh) but I'm so looking forward to it like you have no idea." As she says this she social-smiles, blushes (again), raises her eyebrows and her head & neck bobs forward with an additional downward vector (during 2:39 - 2:40). This body language cluster is seen in both sexes but is somewhat more common in women. The person displaying it is nonverbally saying, "I know I shouldn't ... but I'm going to do it anyway." There are components of apology, confession and sometimes permission-seeking being felt, expressed and asked for here.

In the moving forward motion there is a degree of rapport being sought. And in the downward motion there is a confessional emotion expressed. Whenever someone displays this nonverbal, empathy is also desired.

Often (although not seen in this example) there is also a combination fear-mouth with a superimposed smile-mouth seen with this head & neck forward-downward movement. There may also be seen some degree of torso movement as Marion shows here.

This image is from 2:38, a second prior to the forward-downward head/neck apology-confessional.

This photo is captured at the moment of maximum head/neck/torso forward-downward vectoring.

Of course the nuance of this body language is better viewed in the dynamic context of video (above).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2451:
Jennifer Psaki, Egypt and Smiling Out of Context
(Video, Photo)

Jennifer Psaki, the spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State gave a press conference on 3 July 2013 in which she repeatedly and in various ways stated that the United States will not take sides with regards to the conflict between Egypt's (then) government and its people. Of course later that very day a coup d'état occurred and President Mohamed Morsi - Egypt's first democratically elected President was ousted.

During the press conference, Ms. Psaki repeatedly exhibited outright smiles and suppressed smiles. Smiles, whether they are full or suppressed - in the context of significant and weighty matters are significantly out of context. Nonverbal, paralanguage and verbal communication must all be congruent for sincerity to be both felt and projected. In such serious scenarios smiles are sometimes made because some misguidedly believe too strongly it is some form of etiquette. They are posing for a picture. This cluster-context is consistent with a low sincerity quotient. Such posing is always very wrong and sends the wrong message. Here Ms. Psaki displays a nearly full smile. A similar nonverbal to "duping delight", smiling out of context is a quick way to destroy rapport as many in the audience will also feel the speaker is being patronizing and condescending - even with an audience of one. Of course as human beings whether we realize it or not - we all are guilty of this body language from time to time - republicans, democrats, communists or socialists.

When was the last time you smiled out of context in an effort to be polite and yet lost the trust of another?

What other body language do you see in this short video? What messages and emotions do they convey?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2450:
Daniel Radcliffe on The Graham Norton Show -
Deception, Mirroring and Anxiety
(Video, Photos)

Daniel Radcliffe recently appeared on The Graham Norton Show. During his interview Radcliffe described a scenario wherein a woman had propositioned him via a letter in advance of a particular performance of Equus - and even gave her seat and row number to him. When Graham Norton asked, "But did you see her? You must have checked her out." - the actor denied it. However the man formerly known as Harry Potter told a lie. Norton even called him out on this deception. This video provides some excellent nonverbal examples of lying (and many other emotions) - can you spot them all?

Daniel Radcliffe immediately covers his mouth as he says, "I didn't know, you know what, I really, I, I, I did honestly, I, I didn't look. I didn't see her, I don't know what, I don't know what, I didn't, I didn't see her ...."

"The gentleman doth protests too much methinks."

Covering the mouth with even just a finger, let alone several fingers in the context of a verbal denial is highly indicative of deception.

A slight smile (duping delight) can also be visualized through his fingers - although this is better seen in the dynamics of the video as well as an image captured a few seconds later and shown below.

Here Graham Norton exhibits mirroring of Radcliffe's mouth covering - by covering his own mouth as well (the cards act as a hand surrogate) - as he says, "Daniel's Lying!"

The "Hand Chop" hand gesture (Illustrator) in the midst of verbal denial (at the very end of the video) - is yet another strong indicator of deception. Radcliffe does this multiple times.

This image captured at 2:29 shows another example of "Duping Delight" smile suppression. To fully appreciate this, the video must be viewed.

Duping delight in the the midst of verbal denial is also highly consistent with lying.

This nonverbal is not directly correlative with deception - but it is very telling. This is just at the moment when Radcliffe tells everyone he was living with his parents. As he does this he reaches with his left hand beneath his right thigh (1:53). This is indicative of anxiety and specifically it's a beta/low confidence behavior. Daniel is somewhat embarrassed by living with Mum and Dad. This momentary yet demure emotional mindset is further exemplified by the slight turning-inward of Radcliffe's knees.

Here Daniel displays a shirt cuff adjustment (2:15). This is an indicator of anxiety- and specifically it signals a "dialing up of alpha emotional mindset". Radcliffe's psyche is trying to be more assertive and confident after the more beta display seen above (1:53).

Such interviews are full of body language displays. What other ones did you see? How many will go unnoticed in your next meeting?

What other signals of deception are present here?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2449:
Jessica Korda Fires Her Caddie &
Recruits her Boyfriend
Body Language at Women's U.S. Open (Video, Photos)

During the third round of last week's LPGA's U.S. Open, Jessica Korda fired her caddie Jason Gilroyed. He was immediately replaced by her boyfriend Johnny DelPrete. The above image was taken during the third round. Gilroyed about to be fired is standing next to her. The photo below is a close up of Korda's face. She is displaying both disgust with a superimposed component of contempt. This could be more clearly seen and evaluated if this were a straight-on, front (anterior) view.

Note Ms. Korda's right lip and the region above the right lip is vectored slightly upward relative to her left in what some may call a "snarl". And although is difficult to tell definitively, the furrow to the side of her nose is more pronounced and higher on her right. What other facial configuration seen here signals contempt or disgust?

This photo is taken from the video below. Jessica's arms are in the "Thumbs Forward Arms Akimbo". This was done when she was primarily speaking about her boy friend and his job caddying. This nonverbal signals a supportive emotional mindset. It also can be seen during moments of curiosity. This body language indicates a predominance of beta qualities. It is commonly seen displayed by adults caring for young children on the playground or by elementary school teachers in their classrooms. This nonverbal is exhibited much more commonly in females and gay men.

Here Jessica was talking about firing her caddie. Her arms akimbo stance has morphed to a "Fingers Forward" variety. This signifies a significant "dialing up" of her alpha qualities. Her mind and emotion have momentarily become more dominant and assertive.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2448: Sabine Lisicki Post Match Interview After Defeating Serena Williams - Top Teeth Biting Lower Lip & Sincere Smiles (Video, Photos)

Sabine Lisicki defeated Serena Williams yesterday 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals. Today at Wimbledon she bested Kaia Kanepi 6-3, 6-3 to reach the semifinals.

Lip biting is often used by the subconscious as a way to suppress an outward display of a significant emotion. Here the German tennis pro bites her bottom lip just prior to "Tears of Joy". The rising star showed this nonverbal several times in this interview. Did you spot them all?

Milliseconds after the interviewer says the word "... smile ...", Sabine first briefly laughs (at 0:40) - and then displays a sincere (Duchenne) smile of joy-happiness (at 0:41). Note her partially closed eyelids, the concave-up dynamic furrow in each lower eyelid and her relaxed forehead muscles. These are all required components of a sincere smile. Also important is the upward vectoring of the cheek muscles (Zygomaticus major) exposing the upper teeth only. It is however possible that the smile is a sincere one and yet no teeth are exposed - when the smile is suppressed. When the smile is a sincere one and teeth are exposed - look for those on top as Sabine shows here.

If the lower teeth are exposed there could be muscle fatigue present (e.g. taking multiple photos and thus multiple posed smiles), a downward view/camera angle - or during the beginning or end stages of a bout of laughter (see below). When these conditions are not present but the bottom teeth are seen (extremely common) - think an insincere smile.

Johnny Depp Disagrees with
"The Lone Ranger" Director Gore Verbinski
But He Won't Say It Aloud ...
Tonto's Body Language
(Video, Photo)

Johnny Depp's new film, "The Lone Ranger" will be released on 3 July 2013. In this interview along with the director Gore Verbinski, his body language displays his disagreement regarding the role of Tonto. During the 1:58 - 2:00 segment the actor displays a "forward lip purse". This nonverbal is highly significant for clandestine disagreement. Johnny disagrees with Gore ... but will not voice it aloud. Such a facial expression is seen only in a person who perceives him/herself to be superior - a relative alpha. In many settings - such as a negotiation, legal or other professional , a business "ambush" would be highly probable.

In the seconds just after and just prior to his forward lip purse, Mr. Depp displays multiple anxiety tells. How many do you see? If your business partner exhibited such nonverbals - would you see them?
