Body Language Analysis No. 4015: Reince Priebus' First Post-Resignation Interview - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The above video is an excerpt from Reince Priebus' first interview after his resignation on Thursday as the White House Chief of Staff. Mr. Priebus' body language signals are worthy of examining. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of a crucial portion of his exchange with CNN's Wolf Blitzer.

REINCE PRIEBUS (Beginning at 0:44): "...One other thing - I'm always going to be a Trump fan, I'm on 'Tream Trump', ahum, and, I look forward to helping him achieve, ah, his goals and his agenda for the American people."

WOLF BLITZER: "But why did you resign? I'm still, ah, I'm still trying to understand. I, I underst- stand that you told the President you wanted to resign, he accepted your resignation yesterday, but why? What were there a series of issues? Was there one thing that one thing that came up and se-,  and you decided, you know what, I no longer can do this?"

Just after Reince Priebus says, "...One other thing - I'm always going to be a Trump fan, I'm on 'Tream Trump', ahum, and, I look forward to helping him achieve, ah, his goals and his agenda for the American people" - his nostrils momentarily flare (0:57).

Reince Priebus' stuttering and his mispronunciation of "Team Trump" as "Tream Trump", is a signal of his anxiety, low confidence, and low emotional comfort. Given the fact that he was essentially forced into resigning, his beta behavior is contextual and "leaks" out during this television interview.

Mr. Priebus' nostril flaring at the very end of his statement, signals a significant adrenaline surge and further signals the "leaking" of his true emotions. This is analogous to an over-boiling pot - momentarily pushing its lid off.

As Wolf Blitzer says, "... I, I underst- stand that you told the President ...", Reince Priebus displays a "Tight Tongue Jut" coincident with an extended blink (1:02). Note this signal came just after Blitzer said, "But why did you resign?"

A tight tongue jut (not to be confused with a loose tongue jut) signals emotions of strong distaste, disdain, and being repulsed by a thought, an action, person, group of people, etc. This is a clear signal that Mr. Priebus did not at all want to resign.

If you've ever fed an infant creamed asparagus or any other food they didn't want - it's no coincidence that their tongue behaves in this exact same manner.

During 1:03, simultaneous with Mr. Blitzer saying, "... that you told the President you wanted to resign ...", Mr. Priebus immediately segues into an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR).

An inward lip roll is the psyche's attempt at both suppressing strong emotions from appearing on one's face as well as also preventing crescendoing internally.

As Blitzer says, "... you wanted to resign, he accepted your resignation yesterday, but why?", Priebus displays a Hard Swallow (1:04) - which is a non-specific signal of anxiety.


Summary:

Although considered by many to not be a very effective White House Chief of Staff, Reince Priebus was forced into resigning - and it was not act of his free will. As with anyone else in a similar situation, and very much contradictory to his verbal statement - he very much resents this and has disdain for the person or persons who precipitated his leaving the West Wing.

Body Language Analysis No. 4012: Anthony Scaramucci's and Reince Priebus' First (and Last) Photo in the Oval Office - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence

Reince Priebus resigned as the White House Chief of Staff this afternoon. John F. Kelly, who had previously the held position of Secretary of Homeland Security, has been named as his replacement. The image above was captured in the Oval Office on 25 July 2017 during Donald Trump's interview with journalists from the Wall Street Journal.

This scenario is reminiscent of a bar scene - or that of  an elementary school playground. Most notably, the two men are staring at each other. Both Priebus' and Scaramucci's central eyebrows are lowered. Their lips are thinned and horizontal. Each of their faces are expressing anger.

Note Scaramucci's stance. His heels are planted several inches closer than his shoulder's width. Yet his feet are angled outward - and this gives his overall foot position, and his lower body configuration, a higher alpha tone. Mr. Scaramucci also has more of his weight on his right leg - leaning toward Mr. Priebus.

Reince Priebus is leaning on the back of the coach - with his shoulders slanted - leaning away from Scaramucci. This gives him a significantly less alpha (more beta) appearance. An additional subtle but important gesture here is Priebus' pointing of an orange sharpie at his nemesis. The act of pointing a pen/pencil/marker at another person serves as a surrogate for the more alpha (hyper alpha) index finger pointing (a nonverbal signal Scaramucci practices in abundance).








Another body language component in this moment, perhaps the most profound signal of all, is Anthony Scaramucci's hooking of his thumbs in the top of his belt/waist of his pants. Because of the other body language present, this "Thumbs Hooked in Belt" dynamic signals aggressiveness and a surging of his adrenaline. In many contexts, especially between two males, this particular nonverbal clustering of Mr. Scaramucci's would portend a high probability of an escalation from a verbal disagreement and aggressiveness - to that of physical aggressiveness/violence.

(In other contexts, and clustered with other facial expressions which are NOT present or suggested here, the "Thumbs Hooked in Belt" signal can often be a sign of sexual readiness/sexual assertiveness.)

A profound nonverbal signal in this image is each man's relative position to the President's desk - Mr. Scaramucci is much closer while Mr. Priebus' is significantly further away.

Summary: Reince Priebus is acquiescing his West Wing power while Anthony Scaramucci is very much asserting his dominance. This image captures a moment which is very much a visual metaphor for a classic Alpha-Beta dynamic.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3880: Donald Trump Trying to Suppress his Anger the Day after Jeff Sessions' Recusal (and The Day Prior to Trump's Wire Tapping Accusations) - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

The image above (and the close-up cropped portion below) was taken as President Trump was exiting from The Oval Office on Friday 3 March 2017. It was widely reported/leaked that Donald Trump had only just finished arguing with some his top staff, including Steve Bannon and Reince Priebus (a video showing what appeared to be an argument had also been published). Purportedly the President had deemed that Jeff Sessions should not have recused himself (the day before) from any current or future investigations regarding Russia (or at least Sessions had done so far too easily/early).

It's important to note that President Trump's, now infamous Tweets - in which he accused President Obama of directing a wiretap investigation of him/his staff/Trump Tower were made early the next morning (4 March 2017).

One expression we all often make when we're trying to control our emotions is an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR). As the name suggests, the lips are rolled inward between the teeth. Often (but not always), the lips can temporarily, completely disappear. These images show a partial ILR and most likely represent a moment a split second after - or a split second prior to a more fully expressed example.

The inward lip roll serves as a tool or psyche uses to suppress both the outward display of strong emotion - as well as its inward growth. Indeed, this nonverbal is the source of the centuries-old idiom, "Bite your lip" (e.g., If a person is biting their lip, they cannot speak mechanically - but also they will be less inclined to speak, for their temper will be coming under better control.).

An Inward lip roll is most commonly seen in the context of anger, yet it can also be seen to suppress other strong emotions, such as sadness and joy (e.g., laughing in the wrong social setting), pain, etc.

Conclusion: Donald Trump's expression as he is exiting The Oval Office on Friday 3 March, is highly congruent with the reports that an argument with his senior staff had allegedly just occurred.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3859: Steve Bannon Touches Reince Priebus' Leg at CPAC - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), an interesting moment occurred during Reince Priebus' and Steve Bannon's on-stage interview. Toward the very end of their appearance (24:53), Bannon pats Priebus' right thigh - and Priebus reacts - swiftly swatting him away.

Outside the arena of contact sports, there are only a few causes/reasons why one adult would touch another adult on their thigh. These include:

1. Power/Alpha/Deliberate Intimidation Display
2. Narcissism (a large overlap with cause No.1, above)
3. Sexual (However, this cause is not being suggested in this example)
4. Autistic Spectrum Disorder

What we're seeing here is an amalgam of both a Power/Alpha/Intimidation Behavior display- as well as a very deliberate manifestation of Narcissism (Nos. 1 & 2 above). Entering into another person's personal space without their permission (AKA, "an invasion" of their personal space [intimate space]) - particularly in such a public forum - and especially on the thigh, does not fall within the realm of normal behavior. Bannon is very much letting Priebus know - and letting the World know - who is the alpha male in President Trump's inner circle - and who is the beta.

Intriguingly, just prior to and during the precise instant of contact (24:53), both men were displaying "Tongue Juts" - yet not the same variety. Steve Bannon's jaw and lips were significantly more relaxed - ergo a "Loose Tongue Jut". This signifies the thought-emotion of, "I've been/about to be bad" or "I got caught" (Navarro/Captured in photo immediately above).

However, Reince Priebus' mouth and jaw were more contracted - thus his was a "Tight Tongue Jut" - indicating a Disdain for or being Repulsed/Disgusted by someone or something (isolated in the image immediately above).

A split second later, Priebus then exhibits an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR). An inward lip roll is one way our subconscious/edge of consciousness attempts to suppress both the outward display of - and also the inner growth of strong emotions.

After being touched in such a manner in a highly visible and public context, Priebus' experiences a burst of adrenaline and anxiety - resulting in burning"/strong itching of his ear - which of course, he then grabs/rubs (24:56).

You may have also noticed that about a second prior to this (24:55), Priebus makes a "hard swallow" - signaled by his Adam's Apple (thyroid cartilage) vectoring up and down - which is also highly indicative of anxiety (best viewed in the dynamic context of the video).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3772: Mitt Romney Meets with Donald Trump - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Mitt Romney dined with Donald Trump and RNC Chairman Reince Priebus last night at a restaurant in Manhattan. Afterward, Governor Romney gave a short statement to the press which is included in the above video.

Notice Mr. Romney's tendency to speak out of the right side of his mouth many times during this entire interview. Whenever you see this particular nonverbal speech pattern over a prolonged period - you should immediately think of the following more probable causes:

1. Medical Condition - Such as injury, birth deformity, stroke, facial palsy or other similar condition.

2. A Smile - More typically an insincere smile, although a sincere smile may be asymmetrical, particularly while beginning or if being suppressed.

3. A small minority of individuals have a life-long pattern of continually speaking in an asymmetrical fashion regardless of the scenario (Habit/Tic-like Behavior/Idiosyncrasy).

4. Acquiescence/Resignation/Regret - this is extremely common and nearly as commonly it's not interpreted accurately.

5. Contempt or Anger - People can display contempt or anger (usually somewhat suppressed) over the lengthy exchanges.

6. Swagger/Machismo - This etiology is somewhat more common with men. It's also seen with those individuals who are comfortable asserting their (relative) alpha status, talent, power, etc., over others. It's a signal of high confidence and tends to be more common in celebrities, athletes and others whose professions' requires dominant and highly competitive emotional tones.

7. Deception/Insincerity - This is the most common cause on this list, and almost never understood when it's displayed.

To differentiate between all of these causes, one must carefully observe all the other nonverbal signals (as well as paralanguage) occurring simultaneously (or nearly so). Taking this into account, what is the associated etiology of Gov. Romney's asymmetrical speaking? (Hint: it's not the first four.)

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3548: Reince Priebus at White House Correspondents' Dinner - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

There was another very telling nonverbal moment from the recent White House Correspondents' Dinner.

Beginning at 13:01, President Obama says, ".... GOP chairman, Reince Priebus, is here as well .... Glad to see that you feel that you've earned the night off .... Congratulations on all your success. The Republican Party, the nomination process - it's all - going great. Keep it up!"

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of Reince Priebus' reaction.

During 13:15 - 13:16, As the President says, "... Congratulations on all your success.   ...", Priebus displays a tongue jut - more specifically, a tight, forward tongue jut. This is much akin to an infant pushing creamed asparagus out of her mouth, when she's being fed. The emotions being felt are repulsion, disgust and even nausea.

13:16, The very next two syllables spoken, when the President says, "... success. The Republican ..." - Priebus displays an Inward Lip Roll (ILR) along with a prolonged eyelid closure. Both of these signals - particularly when they're clustered together - indicate the psyche's attempt to blunt the crescendo of strong emotions (as well as their outward display). Here those specific emotions are delineated by the immediately preceding - tight, forward tongue jut (Disgust, Repulsion, Nausea).

During this recent Stephen Colbert episode, the comedian botches his Reince Priebus Baileys-on-his-cereal-monologue (beginning at 3:03). In the process he exemplifies a rarely noted but commonly seen nonverbal display.

When there is a temporary disparity between we have just said - and what we intended to say - a variation of transient disbelief occurs. This manifests itself nonverbally in several ways. Stephen is sincerely laughing at himself - and he can't believe he messed up. What are the other nonverbal signals present in this cluster which solidify this conclusion? Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3493: Reince Priebus regarding Ben Carson's anticipated endorsement of Donald Trump - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

When Erin Burnett asks Reince Priebus regarding Ben Carson's anticipated endorsement of Donald Trump, Priebus responds (beginning at 0:16): ".... [inaudible] I mean that's what you guys are reporting, I, I, I don't know w-, what the details are of that but, you know look, it's, ah [inaudible] Dr. Carson's done, did a great job, I mean he's been expanding our party. He's an important voice in our party. He's a good man, ummmm, but I don't know the details of it, but certainly there're a lot of endorsements going on around the country right now, ahhhh, and if it's true then that's a, that's a, that's a, that's a, that's a big get ..."

At three different times in this brief video the RNC Chair displays variations of a shoulder shrug.


When he says, "... you know look it's ..." (0:22) both of his shoulders elevate.



Again at 0:35 as he says, "... ahhhh ...", both shoulders shrug - although it's less prominent then the previous display.

Then during 0:37 (in above still image) when he says, his second of five consecutive "... that's a ...", his shrug is exclusive to his left shoulder. This is one excellent example of a what is known as a Partial Emblematic Slip.

An emblem has an accepted regional, national or universal meaning and is nearly always performed consciously (but not always). Emblems are often used in place of words because of their very specific meanings (e.g., a head nod yes, a head shake no, the middle finger, etc.). This third example of Priebus' shrug however, was a partial emblem because it was only on his left. It was subconscious and thus a slip - and thus leakage of his true feelings.

A shrug indicates either, "I don't know", "What can I do?" or "What does it matter?". Mr. Priebus either believes Carson's endorsement of Trump has no significant consequence or there's nothing he/the RNC can do to stop Trump.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3480: What Does RNC Chairman Reince Priebus think about Donald Trump? - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Reince Priebus is Chairman of the RNC and thus has considerable insight into the inner workings of the powers that be.

In this interview with CNN's Alisyn Camerota, Mr. Priebus displays several nonverbal signals which contradict his words. And whenever the verbal and nonverbal signals are incongruent - it's the nonverbal ones which are always telling the truth.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of Mr. Priebus within the context of this interview. 

At 1:36 Ms. Camerota continues, "... But you're making it sound simpler -

Priebus: (over-talking) Okay.

Camerota: ... than in fact, it is - because as we have heard time and again, 

Priebus: (over-talking) I think it's pretty simple.

Camerota: ... over the past few weeks , there is a whole chunk of the republican Establishment that is not embracing Donald Trump - in fact, they're rejecting him. We have heard about all of the - big donors, all of the republican party elders, all of the people in congress who are basically saying, 'Anyone but Trump'. They're flocking to Marco Rubio now in droves, hoping that he can be the anti-Trump candidate ...

A "Lose Tongue Jut" is displayed just as Ms. Camerota begins her question regarding Donald Trump. This sign indicates, "I've been caught" or "I've been bad".






1:49 - A dramatic Increase in Blinking Frequency is seen as the RNC Chairman also begins a Hard Swallow. The exact timing of this hard swallow along with the specific nature of this question is a very strong and reliable indicator of anxiety.

Note Priebus' "Adam's Apple" (Laryngeal Incisure of the Thyroid Cartilage) prominence as it temporarily elevates.
Notice also the bulging of the tissue beneath his jaw (vs. those images above) - aka Pelican Sign and part of a swallow cycle.

Toward the end of the swallowing cycle - with more pelican pouching  prominence. 

Mr. Priebus' throat is dry secondary to the anxiety evoked by the subject of Donald Trump.




It's important to watch the video several times - for in this context the dynamic nature of this nonverbal cluster is better visualized, learned and contextualized.

Summary: Reince Priebus and the RNC are, in fact, quite worried regarding the very real possibility of Donald Trump becoming their party's nominee for president.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3360: Donald Trump's Body Language Dissonance (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Within this GMA interview with Reince Priebus regarding the Republican Debates, there is a short but highly significant recent video segment of Donald Trump at a campaign event in a high school gymnasium (2:11 - 2:18).

A nonverbal mistake Trump makes very frequently (and, as a political candidate, carries particularly harsh ramifications) is that his body language sends out negative messages while his verbal messages are attempting the opposite.

In the image above (2:15) although he's not speaking, Mr. Trump is "Index Finger Pointing" while at the same time "Wagging" the same finger (indicating a patronizing dismissal). His facial expression shows a simultaneous expression of disgust. Any one of these three signals is highly negative and demonstrates extreme dissonance with any type of a positive message needed for building rapport and capturing the electorate. All three of these clustered together is quite telling - and profoundly rapport destroying.

Donald Trump is disgusted with the people who surround him. He is barely tolerating the campaign trail.

A moment later (above at 2:16) Trump displays a combination of more disgust coupled with a component of fear.

Several recent national polls have shown that Mr. Trump has slipped and Ben Carson is now in first by a significant margin.

What other conflicting signals does Donald Trump transmit here? How about Reince Priebus - what emotion is he feeling of which he isn't speaking?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2699: Reince Priebus and the Republican Get it All Wrong While Trying to Win Woman Voters - Got Empathy? (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The U.S. Republican party recently held a meeting in which the primary focus was reaching out to women voters. The above image includes Reince Priebus, the chairman of the Republican National Committee. On the stage with him are "six rising stars" in the party who also happen to be women. The photo is so ironic that it could almost be lifted from a Saturday Night Live sketch.

All the ladies except one are wearing a skirt or dress. However you don't need to be a body language expert to know that even if they all were wearing pants, to seat women speakers on a stage - as if on deliberate chauvinistic display, shows a complete lack of empathy and insight regarding professionalism, common courtesy and particularly the female perspective. The irony screams when you know the whole purpose of this quorum is to attract the female vote.

If your goal were to alienate a guest speaker, intimidate her and throw her off her game - then put her in a high, uncomfortable chair directly facing the audience and a television camera. Certainly this was not the Republican Party's intent, yet the complete lack of point-of-view skills in this difficult-to-believe-it's-not-a-parody example should leave everyone, even an old white male scratching his head. It won't win over women voters either.
