Body Language Analysis No. 4306: Donald Trump, a North Korean General, and a Salute - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

North Korea released a video on Thursday from the Singapore Summit earlier this week. It shows President Trump returning a salute from one of Kim's generals. Trump's action shocked many people - including Kim Jong-un.

From a nonverbal perspective, it's crucial to note that Donald Trump did not initiate the salute - but responded to the General's salute (an example of social mirroring) after the General missed Trump's cue to shake hands. Upon receiving the salute from Trump, the general then re-initiated a handshake.

The image above - a screen grab from 0:06 obscures Trump's face - but not Kim's.

A closer evaluation of the North Korean leader in this same instant shows a slack-jawed Kim Jong-un. His full facial expression projects an emotion of momentary shock. For a second, he can't believe what he's seeing.

Did you notice that the North Korean General did not look at Trump's face during his salute - but looked down? He did, however, make eye contact thereafter.

Kim recovers quickly from his shock - and when Trump and the general shake hands, Kim smiles - with a mild component of laughter.

However, a closer evaluation of Kim Jong-un reveals his "smile" is asymmetrical - exposing a good bit more teeth (specifically his right, lower teeth). In this context, his particular evanescent mouth asymmetry indicates Kim's:

• Hubris
• Bravado


While of lower resolution and not captured here from an optimal angle, Donald Trump's facial expression in this same second clearly shows his:

• Central Forehead Contracted and Elevated
• Partial Mouth "Smile" (and Insincere Smile)

This is one nonverbal cluster we never want with high frequency - for although we all display it once in a while - those who use it often have a high correlation with Antisocial Personality Disorder (colloquially referred to as Sociopathy/a Sociopath).

Taken isolation this elevated CFC + partial mouth smile expression indicates one of the following feelings:

• Arrogance
• Contempt
• Sarcastic Disbelief

We all feel these thought-emotions on occasion (hopefully not too often) - and all three may be manifested via other facial expressions. But this is NEVER an expression we should ever want to see when someone is shaking our hand.


Summary: Kim Jong-un was momentarily shocked when he saw Donald Trump saluting a North Korean general. Kim then showed bravado/hubris.

President Trump's expression was insincere while shaking the foreign subordinate's hand. More specifically, Trump projected emotions of arrogance, contempt, and/or sarcastic disbelief.

Body Language Analysis No. 4305: Donald Trump's Aberrancies - post-Summit Interview - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Donald Trump gave this post-Summit Interview with George Stephanopoulos on Tuesday 12 June 2018. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis focusing on some specific body language deviations which the President displayed.

A few hours earlier, Trump and Kim had signed a document - officially titled: "Joint Statement of President Donald J. Trump of the United States of America and Chairman Kim Jong Un of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea at the Singapore Summit". The signing took place in this same room - and Trump and Kim sat at the table which, in this interview, is positioned behind and to the left of Trump.

Look at this screen grab of Donald Trump. His hands are configured in what is known as a Low Steeple (more specifically: a Seated, Low, Conventional Steeple). The President's hands are positioned in this manner virtually constantly during any seated one-on-one interviews.

The low steeple is a hyper-alpha nonverbal. And like all alpha (or hyper-alpha) body language, a little bit goes a long way. It's a bit like garlic. You may like garlic. Garlic may be the ingredient you want. You may think Garlic tastes good in spaghetti sauce - but grandma always taught you not to use too much. Donald Trump dramatically overuses this signal. Waaaay too much garlic.

Although Trump is an alpha male, it's quite unusual-to-rare to find alpha males sitting in this fashion for an extended duration. But Trump does it constantly. No other US President ever did. Ever. I defy anyone to find a single picture of another sitting US president displaying a low steeple.

However, look at President Trump's feet. His left leg is wrapped way around the side of his chair - such that his knee is pointed to the left of Mr. Stephanopoulos. It's so far back, that his heel is positioned a bit further posterior than his gluteus. Moreover, his left heel is elevated off the floor. Trump doesn't want to be there (and it's got nothing to do with Stephanopoulos).

I've analyzed Trump's nonverbal behavior well over 1000 times (over 350 published) - and although he routinely sits in the Seated Crotch Display (aka Manspreading), he never displays this leg posture of "wanting to leave" body language. Never.

This nonverbal dynamic indicates President Trump is anxious. He wants to leave. He doesn't want to be in that room. If a person to whom you're speaking ever adopts this same leg-out-to-the-side posture - you can be sure they have an urgency to depart too. And although we can't see the full layout of this room - it's highly probable that Trump's left knee and foot are pointing toward an exit.

President Trump also displays this hand configuration - with his fingers intertwined and tightened. This nonverbal sign is indicative of frustration - along with a component of anger. Again, this configuration is rare for Trump to use during any one-on-one interviews.

This last example, that of Hand Cupping-Clenching - also projects frustration - but additionally, it carries with it a significantly more beta emotional tone. Note the President is protecting his right hand - his dominant hand.


SUMMARY: President Trump displays multiple examples of anxiety during this interview - as well as frustration - along with beta emotional tone. Intriguingly, Trump's lower extremity nonverbal display is body language which he's never before used publicly during his entire campaign or thus far in his presidency.

There were, in fact, three participants in this interview, Donald Trump, George Stephanopoulos - and the Room itself. The Room, of course, is a metaphor - a symbol of Kim Jong-un, the events of the Summit, and/or the agreements (or lack thereof) within the "Joint Statement".

Body Language Analysis No. 4304: Donald Trump's and Kim Jong-un's Handshake in Singapore - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In a meeting many thought would never happen, Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un made history in Singapore on Tuesday. What follows is a nonverbal analysis of their initial handshake. 

In this first moment leading up to their handshake, Donald Trump is the first to extend his hand as he is walking toward Kim Jong-un. This is a good body language tactic - for it projects initiative, strength, and an overall alpha-tone.

However, simultaneously, President Trump appears to be making a mistake - but it's a ruse. He approaches with his palm oriented upward. By using the palm-up configuration, the American appears to placing himself in the more beta, acquiescing role - inviting the North Korean to be in the more dominant, palm-down position.

If he were to instead approach with his palm in the neutral position (perpendicular to the floor) - he would nonverbally be saying, "We are equals". But here, this component of Trump's body language is a decoy - offering the sentiment, "I will be your subordinate".

But Trump does not maintain this position, for as they get closer, watch what happens. Trump's hand rotates a bit more toward the neutral position - as his hand and arm are retracting closer to his torso. This obligates Kim Jong-un to extend his arm farther.

As the two men get even closer, Trump continues to rotate his hand so that it then becomes perpendicular to the ground. This dynamic facilitates Trump's usual action of pulling the other person's hand/arm close to his own chest - as well as pulling it upward. The upward vectoring of Kim's hand - along with being closer to Trump's torso are both Trump-dominant maneuvers.

Note also that Trump's wrist is not bent - but straight from his elbow to his hand. In distinction, Kim's wrist is bent at a near 90º angle. This is a hyper-alpha maneuver and is uncomfortable - sometimes even overtly painful. 

Despite all this, President Trump, with high likelihood, has been counseled against his hyper-dominant type of handshake - yet he still does it, but somewhat less so with Kim Jong-un compared with most other leaders (Trump has a history of pulling the other person's hand even higher and closer - such that it typically physically touches Trump's mid-to-upper chest).

Trump then extends his left hand and squeezes the lateral aspect of Kim's right upper arm (0:10). While this maneuver exerts dominance and makes Trump look stronger - it's an example of false-affection/false familiarity and often backfires.

A couple seconds later Trump's pull loosens - allowing a more neutral position (although Kim's arm is still somewhat elevated). Note that Kim Jong-un has now straightened his wrist.

The two men's hand-contact lasts about 13 seconds. As Kim Jong-un breaks eye contact first, and begins to rotate his head, Kim's mouth displays a mild expression of pain (0:21). It's probable that Donald Trump deliberately exerted considerably more force than was necessary - or than was wise.

Too many Americans erroneously believe that a handshake should be conducted with maximum squeezing. A proper and rapport-building handshake should include a grip strength equal to the other person's grip. Squeezing too strongly during a handshake is considered rude across the vast majority of cultures.

Less than a second later Donald Trump touches Kim Jong-un again - this time on Kim's left upper arm with Trump's right hand.

A nonverbal display which Trump repeatedly uses with virtually everyone, is he openly choreographs the other person's next move by displaying a palms-up maneuver pointing in the direction in which they were obviously moving. This gives Trump an advantage - for it makes the other person feel like Trump is directing, in charge, and giving orders (and that Trump is hosting even when they're obviously not on US soil).

The facial expression Trump is displaying in this moment is highly indicative of disgust.

In this brief video, Donald Trump touches Kim Jong-un's arm or back at least seven times (not including the handshakes). However, the North Korea leader reciprocates only once (1:07).

Partially obscured from our view by a pillar, the two men then shake hands once again (note the position of Kim's hand and wrist). Kim Jong-un's smile is feigned, however - it's a social smile (albeit a fairly good one compared to most). Sincere smiles do not display one's bottom teeth.

SUMMARY: Although Donald Trump watered-down his typical version of a hyper-alpha handshake, he still asserted significantly more dominance in his greeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Body Language Analysis No. 4297: Donald Trump's Fearful Forefinger - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence

On Friday 1 June 2018, Donald Trump met with former North Korean spy chief Kim Yong-chol in the Oval Office for about 90 minutes. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of the President - with a focus on one particular tell.

DONALD TRUMP (beginning at 0:00): We'll be, ah - meeting on June twelfth in Singapore - went very well - it's really 'getting to know you' kind of a - situation. Ah, Mike has spent two days, ah, doing this. We've gotten to know their people very well and we will - you people are going to have to travel, because you'll be in Singapore 'n June twelfth. Ah - and I'll think it will be a process. It's not - I d't-, I never said it goes in one meeting - I think it's going to be a process. But the relationships are building and that's a very positive thing.

During, 0:29, as he says, "... relationships ...", he moves his right hand/arm gesturing using two rapid cyclical rotations - while advancing his hand anterior-laterally with his palm is facing in (toward his torso). Crucially, during this dynamic, his index finger is flexed (retracted) - but the other digits are extended.

This gesture is but one of many examples of what are known as alpha-beta hybrids. Alpha-beta hybrids are not pure alpha, nor pure beta - but somewhere in between. In general, the use of alpha-beta hybrids is wise. Politicians certainly don't use them anywhere near as often as they should - rather they tend to default to alpha and hyper-alpha nonverbal behavior (which, although solidifies their base - these will alienate swing/independent voters).

While this particular gesture - with the index finger retracted and all the other digits extended - is not idiosyncratic to Trump, it's relatively rare in the general population. And although it IS an alpha-beta hybrid, this illustrator lives toward the beta end of that Goldilocks zone.

Because the forefinger (index finger) is the most alpha/most powerful of all the digits, this non-usage gesture is known as the Forefinger Retraction, Forefinger Flexing, or Fearful Forefinger.

Thus, in a very literal way, this dynamic is the exact opposite an extremely Hyper-Alpha gesture - Forefinger Pointing - (where the forefinger [index finger] is extended, and all the other digits are retracted).

SUMMARY: When we observe his Fearful Forefinger Retraction in dynamic context - it unequivocally tells us that the President is having a momentary downturn of his confidence. Its presence projects a hesitancy to commit/not wanting to engage. Moreover, as its name suggests, there's also a component of fear present.

Body Language Analysis No. 4290: President Trump regarding talks with North Korea - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday, President Trump met with South Korean President, Moon Jae-in at the White House. During a question and answer session in the Oval Office, the American President spoke about his scheduled upcoming Summit with North Korea leader Kim Jong-un. What follows is a partial body language analysis of a portion of this video.


JOHN (Journalist, beginning at 1:31): Can you give us an update Sir, just on where things stand with - with The Summit? Ah, President Moon's National Security Advisor, on the way here, seemed to think that things are on-track, and that - this will indeed happen.

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Well, we're moving along and, we'll see what happens. Ah, there 're certain conditions that we want, and I'll think we'll get those conditions - and if we don't - we don't have the meeting - and frankly, it has a chance to be a great, great meeting for North Korea - and a great meeting for the World. Ah, if it doesn't happen - ahnn, maybe it will happen later. Maybe it will happen at a different time. But, we will see. Ah, but we are - a-, talking - ah, thee meeting's scheduled as you know on June twelfth in Singapore - and, ah whether or not it happens you'll be knowing pretty soon - but we're talking right now. ∑

During 1:37 - 1:38, as the journalist says, "... National Security Advisor, on the way here, seemed to think ...", President Trump displays a classic mild disgust display.

There are two crucial times during this short statement when the President Shrugs his Shoulders - during 1:47 as he says "... conditions ...",  (shown in the photo immediately above) and again, during 2:01 as he says, "... happen ..."

A shoulder shrug is a signal for the thought emotions of:

• I don't know
• I don't care
• What does it matter?

Notice Donald Trump is also looking down as he's shrugging. In this context, this action is a significant adjunct nonverbal. 

Of course, a shrug is a dynamic act - and thus is not captured adequately in a still image. Please watch this segment of the video several times to view these gestures in-context.

During 2:13, as the President says, "... ah ...", he displays an expression with significant Regret - and more specifically, that of Sheepish Regret.

At the very end of this particular answer (2:18), just after he says, "... but we're talking right now", The President displays an expression primarily of Frustration (with a secondary component of Regret). This is notated by the ∑ symbol in the above dialog.

SUMMARY: Confident leaders don't shrug. Whether a person's overall personality is alpha, beta, or (like most) somewhere in between - shrugging is a significant signal of low confidence.

Those who closely follow Donald Trump's behavior aren't surprised to hear that many experts are now are saying it's a good bit less likely the Summit with North Korea will go on as planned.

President Trump's body language displayed here - that of regret, sheepishness, frustration, apathy, and low confidence - all indicate that Trump believes he probably won't be meeting with Kim Jong-un on 12 June 2018.

Body Language Analysis No. 4272: Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in Holding Hands - Alpha and Beta - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEOS, PHOTOS)

On Friday, Kim Jong-un became the first North Korean Supreme Leader to enter into South Korea since the end of the Korean War in 1953.

Near the end of their historic Summit, Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in held hands. This is shown in the video above (during 0:00 - 0:15), as well as in the first photo.

Notice Moon Jae-in (on our right) - with his arm is in front of Kim Jong-un's. This places Moon (the South Korean President) in the relative alpha position and Kim as the relative beta.

Remember - in this moment, the two men are standing on South Korean soil.






Now flashback to earlier in the day - when Kim Jong-un first walked into South Korea - and then he asked President Moon to step briefly into North Korea.

In that scenario, Kim-Jong-un took the lead by verbally asking Moon (Moon was not expecting this) - and in this case, Kim's body language was in the alpha position (during 1:12 - 1:16 in the second video).

Although most of this summit was highly choreographed - these two acts were subconsciously driven.

Summary: During hand-holding, a strong clue as to who - in that moment - feels more alpha is indicated by whose hand is in front.

Body Language Analysis No. 4230: Kim Jong-un, Donald Trump, and the Home Field Advantage - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTO)

On Thursday 8 March 2018, President Donald Trump announced he will meet with North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un. The next day, White House Press Secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders cast some considerable doubt on such a meeting when she said, "We're not going to have this meeting take place until we see concrete actions that match the words and the rhetoric of North Korea."

Kim Jong-un is accustomed to meeting on North Korean soil. Like Vladimir Putin, he skillfully uses his geography as a valuable "third negotiator" to very much give him the home field advantage. But to the careful observer, such behavior also betrays a weakness.

In the choreographed image above we see Kim Jong-un, third from the left - together in Pyongyang (the capital of North Korea) with five members of the South Korean envoy.

Note the position of Kim's feet. They are further apart than any of the men in the South Korean delegation. This indicates his more alpha emotional tone. Yet he's already on his home soil - why does he need to "feel" more alpha?

One reason Kim is standing like this - is because he (again, like Putin) is not very tall. He's trying to be more alpha/more confident - but he's over-compensating. Kim is listed at 5'7" - but he's actually one to two inches shorter (e.g., Donald Trump is listed at 6' 3", however, he's 2.5 inches shorter at 6' 0.5").

Kim Jong-un's hand position is also quite telling. Clasping one's hands behind one's back - while generally speaking, is certainly is more alpha - like garlic, it's often used in excess. In this particular setting, his hand position carries greater nuance. Here, his configuration sends signals of a non-compromising stance and a failure to disclose. In the context of a negotiation, an unwillingness to show one's hands is a reliable signal of a clandestine motive.

The photo is also uncentered and poorly-cropped. This quality makes it look odd, unprofessional, and unbalanced. Why did North Korea's minister of propaganda release this picture? Because Kim wanted the powerful symbolism of the image of the Sun above his head.

Intriguingly, his photo is also unbalanced because Kim Jong-un is - respect to the other individuals - not in the center. This positioning, choreographically at least, forces Kim has to "share his power".

Summary: This and nearly all pictures of Kim Jong-un are not candid - but highly choreographed. These betray his low confidence, low emotional comfort, over-compensatory behavior, and his obsessive need to control his public image and projection of power. He relies more heavily than most leaders on the "Third Negotiator" of home-field advantage. Thus, one prerequisite upon which Donald Trump should absolutely insist - is having the meeting either in a third country's capital - Reykjavík, Geneva, or Paris - or, more preferably, in Washington, D.C.

Donald Trump has accepted Kim Jong-un's invitation to meet in person. No sitting US President has ever met with a North Korean leader.

Dictators, tyrants, strong-men - are sociopaths (aka Antisocial Personality Disorder). They all follow similar patterns of behavior - and this certainly includes their nonverbal nature. With such personalities, a common trait is a significantly limited variety of facial expressions. Kim Jong-un is no exception.

Consider this thought experiment: Imagine, for a moment, that you had never heard of the DPRK leader. You would very likely think Kim Jong-un's 'smile' is a good one. You may think it to be a sincere smile - yet you'd be wrong. His 'smile' is a feigned. It's quite insincere.

Included here are three examples of one of Kim Jong-un's default expressions - a false-smile. He displays a small variety of other default faces - and he's more skilled than most people at reproducing these expressions on-demand. But with such a low variability and routine use of a small number of facial expressions - these are essentially, Living Masks.

Notice that Kim Jong-un's bottom teeth are visible. While the lower teeth are indeed often revealed during sincere laughter, he was not laughing in these examples. A true, sincere smile of joy-happiness never exposes the lower teeth - but, as with most people, the North Korean leader is fond of exposing them when he's feigning a smile.

Fascinatingly, individuals who routinely "wear" behavioral facial masks are not only being insincere in that particular moment - they also exhibit strong insincere behavior over the course of their entire lifetimes'.

Moreover, people who commonly display behavioral masks also have another profound personality flaw - they have a strong tendency to think in false-dichotomy World-views.

Summary: Kim Jong-un's routine display of a small number of facial expressions are examples of behavioral facial masks. Included here three images of one of his default faces - an insincere smile. This low-variety of facial expressions is a pattern common to dictators, tyrants - and sociopaths - as well as those who view the World in false dichotomies.

Body Language Analysis No. 4165: Kim Jong-un's New Years Faux Pas - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Kim Jong-un delivered a New Years Day address yesterday. The North Korean leader offered hope saying, "North and South must work together to alleviate the tensions and work together as a people of the same heritage to find peace and stability ...". However, he also projected hubris declaring, "The entire mainland of the US is within the range of our nuclear weapons and the nuclear button is always on the desk of my office. They should accurately be aware that this is not a threat but a reality ..."

Although only a portion of his speech is included within the above video clip - from a nonverbal perspective, it's representative of the whole.

One prominent body language behavior of Kim Jong-un is his frequent and rather prominent rocking from side-to-side. While in general, this is an extremely common anxiety tell - it's rarely displayed by heads-of-state.

A very natural method to diminish this rocking side-to-side (or forward-to-backward rocking) is by using hand gestures - so long as these are contextual and proportional. This would also have the additional benefit of building rapport (lack of hand proper gestures is a destroys rapport). You'll note that Kim Jong-un doesn't use any gestures (aka Illustrators).

When one's hands are hidden or rarely seen, it will be both subconsciously and consciously interpreted as deceptive (regardless of the viewer's level of nonverbal training). The more of one's body which is hidden by any barrier (pockets, etc.) - the less they are trusted.

The podium Kim Jong-un is using is too tall relative to his height. This creates a barrier for hand/arm gestures - preventing portions of them from being seen - but also in creating a subconscious suppressant against their usage.

Summary: Kim Jong-un demonstrated considerable anxiety during his 2018 New Years Day address. His complete lack of hand gestures diminishes his rapport with his audience - as well as indicating an increased likelihood of deception.
