Body Language Analysis No. 4078: Toddler Steals Prince Harry's Popcorn - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During an event at the Invictus Games, a toddler repeatedly helped herself to Prince Harry's popcorn. When Harry finally "caught" her - he was playful (Of course, he probably knew all along she was pinching his popcorn [longer version here]).

Like most good-natured uncles - Prince Harry interacted well with the little girl. Upon teasing her, he instinctively realized he may have gone a bit too far. A beautiful manifestation of his psyche's awareness of this infraction is seen during 0:31 - in the form of a very specific microexpression.

Here Harry displays a classic example of a "Loose Tongue Jut" (be careful not to confuse this with a "Tight Tongue Jut" - which has a completely different meaning). It's also sometimes referred to as a "Lizard Tongue".

A Loose Tongue Jut signals "I've been bad", "I've been caught" (Navarro) - and, as it's exampled here, it's very often a self-deprecating act. It's our psyche calling us out - e.g., "My bad!". It's important to note that Prince Harry wasn't deliberately sticking his tongue out at the child - rather the teasing action came earlier via the popcorn. The Loose Tongue Jut dynamic is subconsciously driven.

Watch this video at regular speed - without looking at the time marker - you may very well miss it. Then when you do see it (occurring during 0:31) - note how quickly it happens. Next, view it at 1/4 speed - it's still quite evanescent.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3814: Claire Foy's recounting of Meeting Kate Winslet - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last week, before she won a Golden Globe for portraying Queen Elizabeth II in the Netflix series, The Crown, Claire Foy was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live. During that appearance she told a story about meeting Kate Winslet for the first time. Kate ultimately said, "Keep on truckin'!"

In her retelling of this story, Claire gave herself a "Thumbs Up" signal while simultaneously making a particular face (2:22 in the video, and captured in the image below). First, notice her face is not congruent with her thumbs up. The thumbs up signal is much more conscious - and a universally positive signal of optimism, success and approval. Yet Claire's face is expressing self-deprecating feelings. Foy's facial expression is a much more subconscious phenomenon ... and the subconscious mind is always the place where the true feelings reside.

Take Home Point: Whenever there is disparity between the consciously and subconsciously generated nonverbal signals - it's the subconscious body language which tells the truth.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3530: Justin Trudeau, Quantum Computing and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Meanwhile, earlier today in Waterloo, Ontario - Canada's Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau gave an impromptu lecture on the basics of quantum computing. And unknowingly ... he also provided multiple body language teachable moments.

Reporter: "I was going to ask you to explain quantum computing, but [reporter suppresses his laughter/snicker] I di[inaudible] .... Um, w, when do you expect ah, Canada's ISIL mission to begin again, and are we not doing anything in the interim, ah - while we prepare?"

Trudeau: "K, ah -very simply, normal computers work ah, by [tongue jut] ... ah ..." [Audience Laughter]...

Between 0:12 - 0:15, as the reporter finishes his question, the Prime Minister repositions his feet to a wider stance. Although we cannot see the lower half of his body, when you watch the video, you'll be able to tell his feet are further apart as Trudeau begins his answer. This body language change, temporarily increases testosterone (increasing his assertiveness and power emotions - and yes, all women have some testosterone too) and decreases his cortisol (lowering stress). Intriguingly, standing with one's feet about shoulders width apart (slightly less so for women) will also engender fluidity of thought and speech (while standing with our feet close together does the opposite).

During 0:19 just after he says, "... by ...", Justin Trudeau displays a Tongue Jut (and more specifically a "Loose Tongue Jut"). This indicates a tension releaving self-deprecating, "I've been bad" emotional tone (Navarro). The reporter was being a bit sarcastic and the Canadian Leader decided to call his bluff. Yet in doing so, Trudeau knew he was showing off a bit (although many would have responded in a similar manner if they indeed understood the fundamentals of quantum computing).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3385: Adele, "Hello" and SNL - Body Language Tell (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Last weekend Adele was a guest on Saturday Night Live. Just after singing Hello she displayed a cluster of nonverbal signals which, when you see them - will ring familiar. She juts out her tongue, crosses her eyes and lowers her body height (primarily via a knee bend). Of these three components, the tongue jut is the more common one (although here they convey the same thought-feelings).

Many would call this a variety of a "goofy" or "silly" face. And although these signs are primarily subconsciously initiated, there's often an edge-of-consciousness quality present. This expression (either portion) is frequently seen when an actor or performer (professional or amateur) "comes out of character" - within the first seconds post-performance, e.g., a feeling of strong relief (It's crucial here to think very loosely with respect to the idea of "performance" - for it can just be a small portion of a conversation - even in a business context). It indicates self-deprecating emotions with some level of embarrassment.

Moreover and often under-appreciated, this expression is also associated with individuals who have relatively high sincerity quotients. With what other personality trait is this behavior cluster seen?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3130: Barack Obama on Jimmy Kimmel - "I don't think I've got his home number" & Kanye's Response - Who's Lying? - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Barack Obama was recently on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" and among other things - Jimmy and Barack spoke about the President's relationship with Kanye West. Included here is video here of both men - providing us a great opportunity for contrasting their body language.

Beginning at 1:07 the President continues, ".... look, I love his music, he's incredibly creative - um [tongue jut at 1:10] - I don't think I've got his home number ...."

The tongue jut at this moment indicates a self-outing/self-deprecation regarding his deception. Think of this as the President saying, "I've been bad" or "I've been caught". It's possible that Barack has Kanye's cell number (and not his home number) or that it's the White House switch board that has Kanye's number (and it's not in the President's personal phone) - but there is some level deception transpiring here. In addition the word choice of, "I don't think" (vs. the much more honest and definitive statement of, "I don't have") - represents an additional level of presidential hedging.

Note also Mr. Obama's tongue jut occurs immediately after he says, "... um ..." - such timing is also highly suspect of a lie.

Tongue jut at 1:10

"I've been bad" or "I've been caught"
(Navarro)

And here is Kanye's response ....

"... I love Obama. He called our house before - he knows that. Don't try to pin us - against each other. Come on bro', don't try and pin us against each other. No listen, I love Obama ...."

During this statement, Mr. West had a very loose (right) wrist and indeed displayed a highly characteristic, "Broken Wing" configuration (captured here at 0:32).

The body language of a broken wing indicates Kanye is very emotionally comfortable and not feeling threatened by this apparent contradiction between his claim and the President's statement to Jimmy Kimmel. This tells us that Kanye is not lying and indeed it's highly probable that the President's staff prepped him and let him know that for reasons of public perception, Mr. Obama had to deny any perceived friendship with the musician. West is okay with this and knows this dance.

What other Body Language clues to the full story do you see on Kanye?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2875: Eugenie Bouchard, Wimbledon and Tongues - Body Language Nuance (PHOTOS)

Congratulations to Eugenie Bouchard just became the first Canadian, woman or man, to reach the finals of a Grand-Slam singles. Earlier today she lost 6-3, 6-0 to Petra Kvitova at Wimbledon.

These two images of Ms. Bouchard are of course similar - yet different. It is a fundamental premise when interpreting body language, signals must not be evaluated in isolation.

When the tongue is projected straight out in what is commonly termed a tongue jut (although not always visible as in the image above, it is usually gently pressed on by the teeth) and depending on the other nonverbals with which it is clustered - can indicate, "I've been bad", "I've been foolish", "I just got away with something", "I got caught" as well as a form of a self-depreciation/humility expression and even excitement.

A tongue out to the side will indicate intense focus and concentration. Very often there is an intent that has a physical component about which is to be carried through upon. In a business-negotiation this can be seen in the context of a disparity between what is said and what is (clandestinely) intended.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2838: Robert De Niro, Graham Norton and Acting Advice - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Robert De Niro was on The Graham Norton Show a few months ago. When he's on screen, the Academy Award winning actor suspends our disbelief - a' la Stanislavsky. However when he's back in his own skin - he exhibits as many body language tells as the rest of us.

Graham Norton asks De Niro about pearls of wisdom he gives to young actors. In the above video during the 0:44 - 0:45 segment (see image below), just after he jokingly tells Graham Norton that he would recommend Norton not return to acting, we see Mr. De Niro display a "Tongue Jut". In this setting a tongue jut indicates an emotion of "I've been bad". When it is clustered with other nonverbals it can be a signal of a self-deprecating mindset or extreme excitement.
