Body Language Analysis No. 3983: Female Kurdish sniper fighting IS narrowly cheats death - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This sniper, fighting in Raqqa, is a member of a Kurdish YPJ (Women's Protection Unit). Incredibly, less than a second after she pulls her trigger - another bullet (fired by her enemy, the Islamic State, aka IS) narrowly misses her head.

For a split second afterwards, the female sniper's eyes open very widely. This action is secondary to the adrenaline surge of her near death experience.

Notice also how her tongue rapidly sticks outward. This is known as a "Tongue Jut" - and more specifically, this variation is a "Loose Tongue Jut". A loose tongue jut is an example of nonverbal self-deprecating behavior. It's a way of calling one's self out after a mistake - as if to say, "I've done a foolish thing" or "I've (almost) been caught".

Why did the sniper laugh - and so quickly - after almost being killed?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3589: Barack Obama's retort to Donald Trump regarding ISIS - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday President Obama gave a speech regarding ISIS/ISIL/Daesh - and although his name was not mentioned once - Donald Trump's foreign policy was also discussed.

Beginning at 19:05, the President continues, "... We now have proposals from the presumptive Republican nominee for president of the United States to bar all Muslims from emigrating to America. We hear language that singles out immigrants and suggests entire religious communities are complicit in violence.  Where does this stop? The Orlando killer, one of the San Bernardino killers, the Fort Hood killer -- they were all U.S. citizens. Are we going to start treating all Muslim Americans differently? Are we going to start subjecting them to special surveillance? Are we going to start discriminating against them, because of their faith? ..."

What follows are three very specific emotions (of many) Mr. Obama displays during this speech.

During 19:32, the President displays a Microexpression of Contempt as he says, "... this ..." [centered on the left side of his mid-face].

A split second later, as he says, "... stop ...", Mr. Obama displays a related microexpression of disgust.

Here we see subtle a subtle anger display (during 19:33 after he says, "... stop ....". Note the tension in the President's lower eyelids - but also with his eyes slightly closed. His mid-face tension is significant as well. Notice too the tightening of his "mustache area" as well as the flaring of his nostrils. Yet this manifestation of anger is not a microexpression, but a prolonged and subtle macroexpression.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3424: Donald Trump, "Hillary Clinton created ISIS with Obama" - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Saturday in Biloxi, Mississippi, Donald Trump made the claim that Iran, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama created ISIS (DAESH).

The republican candidate's declaration was captured in video above. Trump said, "One thing I see out there - just happened today - in Tehran - they're burning down the Saudi Embassy, you see that. Now, what that is is Iran wants to take over Saudi Arabia - they always have, they want the oil, Okay - they've always wanted that [video edit] ... They have a bunch of dishonest people - they've created ISIS - Hillary Clinton created ISIS with Obama ... created with Obama."

During 0:20, as he says, "... Clinton ...", Donald Trump displays a classic Microexpression of Fear.

This is a close up of the image above.

Note his mouth is drawn back at its corners barring his teeth and his nostrils are flared with significant mid-face muscle tension. Trump's eyelids are opened significantly wider than baseline and his central forehead is contracted (CFC) and elevated along with an elevation of his inner eyebrows (peripheral forehead is not contracted).

This nonverbal cluster is indicative of fear with a secondary component of emotional pain. What is profoundly noteworthy is that he did not exhibit this when he said, "ISIS", "Tehran", "Saudi Arabia" or "Obama" - rather his microexpression of fear occurred only when he said, "Clinton".

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3396: President Obama's Oval Office Address - Dialing up The Alpha - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Unlike his only other (two) Oval Office Addresses, last night Barack Obama was standing.

With the "Resolute Desk" behind him (rather than between him and his audience), the President (or anyone) will project and feel significantly more strength and resolve while standing. And even though this was a traditional speech (written in advance and read, as opposed to a press conference or debate), standing strongly engenders greater fluidity and confidence versus saying the same things while seated.

Standing has also been shown to temporarily increase testosterone (in both males and females) while also lowering cortisol (a "stress hormone"). This effect should not be trivialized or ignored. If you want to increase your assertiveness and look as well as feel more determined - take this one standing up.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3395: President Obama's Oval Office Address, ISIS and the Split-Finger Fastball - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

A reminder: This website serves as an objective reference source for the science and art of Body Language/Nonverbal Communication. In an effort to be both practical and academic, many examples from/of varied cultures, politicians, professional athletes, legal cases, public figures, etc., are cited in order to teach and illustrate both the interpretation of others’ body language as well as the projection of one’s own nonverbal skills in many different contexts – not to advance any political, religious or other agenda.

Due to last week's San Bernardino mass shooting, and the subsequent discovery that the perpetrators had terrorist motives, President Obama gave an address from the Oval office tonight - only the third of his seven years in office.  

Beginning at 9:01, the President continues, " ... The strategy than we are using now - air strikes, special forces and working with local forces, who're fighting to regain control of their own country - that is how we'll achieve a more sustainable victory ..."

During 9:07 - 9:10, as Mr. Obama says, "... local forces, who're fighting to regain control of their own country ...", he displays a particular variety of nonverbal illustrator known as a "Split Finger Fastball". This body language signal acquires its name from the very similar configuration of the hand needed for a baseball player utilizing that specific pitch.

In the nonverbal world, the split finger fastball is a fantastic example of one type of an alpha-beta hybrid. Said another way, it projects alpha qualities (e.g., strength, assertiveness, a sense of urgency) without being too aggressive. To many "leaders" and others who use alpha body language signals have a strong tendency to OVER-USE them - and thus become hyper-alpha signals. Index finger pointing at an audience is a type of hyper-alpha nonverbal which is, unfortunately, rather common. Another one is the palm-down gesture, particularly with the fingers closed (e.g., Hitler's raised arm, palm-down salute). Hyper-alpha gestures will alienate all but your staunchest supporters.

Those who Have a multitude of alpha-beta hybrids in their repertoire place themselves at a profound advantage in establishing and building rapport.
