Body Language Analysis No. 4298: LeBron James Walks Out of Post Game Press Conference after Game One Loss - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence

The Cleveland Cavaliers lost the first game of the 2018 NBA finals to the Golden State Warriors 124 - 114 in overtime on Thursday night. It was a phenomenal game marred by several controversies at the end. Perhaps the most unusual of these involved Cleveland's J.R. Smith. With 4.7 seconds to go in regulation, Cleveland's George Hill missed his second free throw which would have given the Cavs a one-point lead. Cleveland's J.R. Smith grabbed the offensive rebound quite close to the basket with 4.0 seconds left - only to take the ball out to midcourt - then passing it to Hill with less than a second left. Hill took an off-balanced three (or long two) point shot with 0.1 left on the clock, but it was blocked. Most feel that J.R. Smith's actions probably cost Cleveland the game.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of LeBron James' response to questions regarding J.R. Smith at the post-game press conference.

This image was captured at 0:51 in the above video, just after ESPN's Mark Schwartz asked Lebron, "Do you know if he [J.R. Smith] knew the score?"

Notice that LeBron's upper eyelids are partially closed as he rolls his eyes. An eye roll is a conscious or edge-of-consciousness display of:

• Contempt

   and

• Impatient Dismissal

As LeBron turns away to leave, his upper eyelids entirely close for a few seconds. Such prolonged eyelid closure (or partial closure) is a form of psychological blocking behavior - further amplifying his dismissal of and contempt for Schwartz.

A second after Schwartz says, "Thank you", James' raises his right forehead and eyebrow in a moment of incredulity (notice that his center and left forehead are relaxed).

As he's walking out of the press conference, LeBron James points at David Schwartz and says, "Be better tomorrow".  In almost every context, Index finger (forefinger) pointing is highly offensive and patronizing across all cultures.

Ruby Rose was recently a guest on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. She was promoting her soon to be released film, Pitch Perfect 3. She also discussed her trepidation toward a pig (who had grown unexpectedly large) she had purchased for her mother. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of her conversation with Jimmy Fallon.

On multiple occasions during her interview, Ruby Rose displays a classic and particular nonverbal signal which you've no doubt seen, yet is rarely discussed in any body language text: Asymmetrical Blinking.

During, 1:11, Ruby Rose Rolls her Eyes - both of them. This bilateral ocular display transmits the thought-emotions of:

• Contempt
• Impatient Dismissal

A split second later, also during 1:11, Ruby Rose displays an example of asymmetrical blinking. Asymmetrical blinking occurs when one eyelid closes while the other remains partially open - and/or when one eyelid re-opens whilst the other remains closed/mostly closed.

Asymmetrical Blinking frequently is seen multiple times in rapid succession, but it may also occur at a slower frequency and singularly.

She repeats the Asymmetrical Blinking once again during 3:08.

While Eye Rolling and Asymmetrical Blinking both project (in part) the emotion of Contempt - Asymmetrical Blinking also indicates thought feelings of:

• Sarcasm
• Pretentiousness
• Feigned Disbelief 

It's helpful to think of Asymmetrical Blinking as a Partially Suppressed Eye Roll.

Another display of Asymmetrical Blinking is exemplified during 3:41

Fascinatingly, while an eye roll occurs primarily at the level of consciousness (a deliberate act) with some dips into the edge-of-consciousness, Asymmetrical Blinking is a somewhat deeper phenomenon - happening mostly at the edge-of-consciousness but partially diving into the subconscious.

Summary: Asymmetrical Blinking is a nonverbal amalgam, displaying the emotions of Contempt - and also Pretentiousness, Sarcasm, and Feigned Disbelief.

Whenever you see Asymmetrical Blinking, it should signal to you that there is a component of hyperbolic behavior and Insincerity present.

Shakespeare would say, Asymmetrical Blinking is a classic nonverbal example of:

"The Lady doth protest too much, methinks."

Body Language Analysis No. 3992: Angela Merkel's Eye Roll for Vladimir Putin's Mansplaining - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Maybe you've heard - Angela Merkel gave Vladimir Putin an Eye Roll yesterday at the G20 Summit. This particular eye roll will be shown for decades.

But what emotions are indicated by an eye roll?

• Contempt
• Impatient Dismissal

There are certainly other body language signals for both of these emotions. Intriguingly though, an eye roll has a much more conscious component. That is to say, while the vast majority of nonverbal behavior is subconsciously initiated - the eye roll is significantly consciously driven. It's openly declaring:

"I am dismissing you/your opinion - and/or I have contempt for you - and I want you to know it."

In the next moment, the German Chancellor suppresses a second eye roll (while fixating her gaze in the mid-distance). This moment provides a fantastic illustration of a phenomenon known as "Leakage" - describing how, when we suppress a nonverbal signal in one area - it readily "Leaks" out in other places.

What do we see during this leakage?

Angela Merkel's jaw clenches - and her lips become thinned. This is significant for anger. In addition, her jaw and lips retract (vectoring backward) along with significant tension in the region above her upper lip and below her nose. This is an expression of partially suppressed disgust. The flaring of her nostrils overlaps into both disgust and anger.


Summary: Angela Merkel has open contempt and dismissal toward Vladimir Putin - and she wants him to know it. She also feels anger and disgust for the Russian President.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3846: Donald Trump, Shinzō Abe and Handshake Faux Pas - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Prime Minister Shinzō Abe met with Donald Trump yesterday at the White House. As virtually all World Leaders do, the two men posed for a highly photographed handshake - this one in The Oval Office. It's a safe assumption that the two men also shook hands when they first met earlier that day in relative privacy. Thus it's also probable that at that first meeting only their official government photographers captured that handshake. Such private-first, public-second handshake choreographing is commonplace with heads-of-states visits.

At the very end of this video, Prime Minister Abe turns to his head, and torso to his right, with his eyes turning further - looking up and to his right. This is an example of a "Suppressed Eye Roll". Some have suggested that Abe did this because of the length of the handshake, yet this was not the reason. These longer, hyper-posed, pseudo handshakes for the public are common place when prime ministers and presidents meet. The real cause of the Japanese Prime Minister's expression was because Trump deliberately squeezed his hand quite hard - and he was in pain.

This was a silent scream.

During attempts to suppress strong emotions, such as pain or tears of sadness - forceful eye gaze is a common nonverbal epiphenomenon. This behavior is most commonly seen in a primarily upward direction (photo above shows this direction somewhat), yet it can occur in other directions too (e.g., a slit second later [below] Shinzō Abe's looks directly to his right [away from the source of his pain]).

Although short-lived, it's difficult to overlook the extreme configuration of the Prime Minister's mouth - which, when coupled with the Elevated Central Forehead Contraction - indicates emotional and/or physical pain.

He also rotates his head - and to a lesser degree his torso - away from Donald Trump.

If you carefully listen to the video, you'll here Prime Minister Abe say, "Please - look at me." (0:32 -0:34). A fundamental truth across most all cultures (there are rare exceptions for some superior-subordinate scenarios) is that during handshakes, eye contact is of profound importance. Little or no eye contact projects strong feelings of disrespect.

Trump repeatedly and quickly pulls Shinzō Abe's hand-arm toward his chest with a jerking motion. This body language variant is a default of the President's and is an extremely common narcissistic behavior. It's an attempt to project power and a hyper-alpha status (e.g., "Don't forget I'm stronger than you").

Trump also bent (flexed) his Japanese counterpart's wrist to about a 45 degree angle. Coupled with grip strength, this added another component of pain. It's facilitated by Trump's upward vectoring of their hands (It's not normal for handshakes as well as being disrespectful).

Intriguingly, Mr. Trump immediately verbally outs himself when he says, "Strong hands -" then gesturing the bending motion he had just performed (0:43 - 0:45). Trump knew this had not been a "normal" handshake maneuver and he was aware he had hurt the prime minister (this is akin to a guilty child telling his mother he didn't eat the last cookie before anyone asks).

It cannot be over emphasized that, during a handshake, one should always match the grip strength of the other person. This principle is universal - true across all cultures. Some people have been (very) wrongly taught that a good handshake requires a strong grip - don't make this mistake. Be aware enough, and in the moment enough, so that you match the other person's grip strength. And never try to intimidate the other person by squeezing too tightly.

Trump touches the back of Shinzō Abe's hand toward the end of the lengthy handshake. Their relative positions and the fact that Abe's hand is on top makes a "double-hander" handshake more likely. This maneuver up-regulates Trump's portion of the handshake to a higher alpha status.

Notice this is also performed via a patting motion rather than with constant contact. While I would not recommend either form of the double-hander for a person in Trump's specific scenario - the patting motion dynamic projects a particularly patronizing emotional tone (e.g., patting a child on the head).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3569: Johnny Depp Surprises Pink on Jimmy Kimmel - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Kimmel has a guest, Pink has a crush and Depp has considerable anxiety. This is despite Johnny being the caliber of actor worthy of three Best Actor nominations. Mr. Depp is paid well to suspend our disbelief - yet when he's "just being himself" (e.g., out of character), he's just as human as the rest of us. Thus this interaction provides ample body language moments - a few of which are highlighted here as a tutorial.

1:51  -  With emotional states of significantly high embarrassment  - it's very typical that both feet get placed flat on the floor (Pink had had her right leg crossed just prior to this) as one acquires a whole-body flexing, what is often called a "The Fetal Position".

Pink Covers her face partially with her hand - yet primarily with a portion of her top (which acts here as a hand-surrogate).

Pink both rotates and tilts her head-neck away from Depp. This dramatic turning away and strong avoidance of eye contact (along with her very obvious blushing) is a nonverbal cluster highly indicative of embarrassment.

Johnny "scratches" his right upper arm for considerable duration. This is a variation of a "One Arm Self-Hug" indicates elevated anxiety and low emotional comfort. Despite being an acclaimed and  accomplished actor, Depp is very often unnerved during talk show scenarios.

The "Eye Roll" is a conscious (deliberate) display of contempt (Most contempt expressions are subconsciously initiated) as well as indicating impatient dismissal.

Yesterday after Donald Trump won all five republican primaries, he gave a victory speech. Throughout it, Governor Chris Christie and his wife stood behind Mr. Trump. Mary Pat Christie displayed some very telling nonverbal signals - her body language editorializing on Mr. Trump. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis.

Trump: "Well I think the only card she has is the woman's card. She's got nothing else going. And frankly, if Hillary Clinton were a man, I don't think she'd get five percent of the vote. The only thing she's got going is the woman's card - and the beautiful thing is - women don't like her. Okay? And look how well I did with women tonight, okay?..."


























During 0:12 - just after Trump says, "... The only thing she's got going ...."

and as he finishes his sentence - during 0:13 as he says, ".... is the woman's card ...", she displays this same eye maneuver again - in addition to a suppressed smile. 

This is a suppressed eye roll. The upper eyelids open very widely without the eyebrows or the forehead moving upward. An eye roll is a conscious nonverbal signal of impatient dismissal and contempt. The eyelids open wide, suppressing the upward "rolling" of the eyes. It's an attempt to at least partially suppress the outward display of this action.

Mary Pat then puts on this classic facial expression of disgust just after Trump says, "... and look how well I did with women tonight, okay?...

So while Mary Pat Christie does not roll her eyes here - she very much wanted to but suppressed it because of the social context. Her thoughts and emotions regarding Donald Trump's statement is very clear - she does not like him, she has contempt and disgust for him - and she thinks he is completely wrong in his assessment of Hillary Clinton's electability.

Overall Marco Rubio has a significantly greater sincerity quotient than most of his Presidential-candidate peers (which will certainly benefit him in his pursuit as the Republican Nominee). Yet in this GMA interview, the U.S. Senator from Florida displays significant anxiety tells. And whenever people sense anxiety - it often calls into question their sincerity, likability, trust and leadership.

Beginning at about 2:00 - when George Stephanopoulos asks Senator Rubio about allegations regarding misuse of a Republican party credit card for personal use, Rubio displays a significant cluster of nonverbal behavior.

During 2:05 - 2:07 we see bilateral and multiple rapid blinking with deep inhalation and a leaning back in his chair.

Followed by a very evanescent Eye Roll (2:07) indicating an impatient dismissal with an element of contempt.

Then Rubio keeps his hands below the table. He should have been sitting closer to the so that he could more easily keep his hands above it. There is a strong tendency to not trust someone when their hands are hidden or less visible. This is particularly true in the dynamic context of responding to an accusation (Throughout much of this interview Rubio's hands were beneath the table - only his right hand was sometimes above it).

Rubio then has to clear his throat and performs a hard swallow.

In summary, although verbally Senator Rubio seems to explain this credit card situation well - his nonverbal behavior indicates his anxiety regarding it is disproportionately high - and he has significant impatience and contempt for those who raise questions regarding it.

Jeb Bush appears here in a brief video at the 2015 Iowa State Fair. Posted yesterday, he alludes to Donald Trump's entrance (and exit) on his helicopter.

Question: "Governor, getting elected one vote at a time, is that a challenge?"

Governor Bush answers, "Three hundred and thirty million people, it, it's a challenge for sure, but this is how you win in Iowa. Yeah. You don't wanna lob it - you don't wanna lob it in. You gotta be here. You can't helicopter in and leave [Contempt Cluster] - you gotta be all it. Subject yourself to peoples' questions and - this is - look I mean - New Hampshire's similar, Nevada's similar I'm learning - ya know, people really want to know where you stand. There's a lot of yearning for change and - you can't just ah, give it to 'em with a 30 second ad."

While much of the time, the emotion of contempt is subconsciously initiated. Yet in this example, just after the former Florida Governor says, "... You can't helicopter in and leave ...", he displays a contempt display which has a significant conscious component. In rapid succession (all during 0:15) we see the following cluster:

• Eyebrow Flash
• Prolonged Blink
• Eye Roll

As eyebrows continue to elevate, there is a prolonged blink

All three of these nonverbals - the eyebrow flash, the extended blink and the eye roll occur in an overlapping and rapid succession manner (ergo, a body language example of a "cluster"). Most people would miss these signals in real-time. Here it shows us Governor Bush has some real contempt for Donald Trump - and at this particular time, this emotion is deliberately and consciously initiated.


Jeb continues, "... Nevada's similar I'm learning - ya know, people really want to know where you stand. There's a lot of yearning ..." - he rubs/scratches his lower sternum and left chest.

This over-the-lower-heart gesture is a general, yet highly reliable indicator of anxiety. In this context, it tells us that Governor Bush feels he's behind in his Nevada campaign and he's at a disadvantage for the caucus there on 23 February 2016.

Erin Andrews spoiled the party last night on "Dancing With the Stars". Noah Galloway - a semifinalist and a war hero proposed to his girlfriend, Jamie Boyd .... and Ms. Andrews let her true feelings leak out. What follows is a partial body language analysis of the above video.

In addition, Andrews' lower and mid-face are also displaying additional elements of contempt.

The eye roll is a conscious/edge-of-consciousness nonverbal, thus Ms. Andrews' claim that she was feeling empathy for the Noah and Jamie - and that she was trying to suppress tears - is a blatant lie.

A few seconds earlier we can see Jamie Boyd in the midst of one common nonverbal configuration sometimes seen when one is trying to suppress tears. Surprising to some people, the jaw is clenched and jutted forward (similar to what other emotion?). Her chin is also dimpling and her nostrils are flared. Some will also be surprised to learn that this is a very sincere smile - despite her down-turned mouth corners. Her mouth/jaw/lips are in the midst of the act of preventing her from crying.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3111: Dakota Johnson rips into her Mom, Melanie Griffith at Oscars (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

An interesting and awkward family moment was on display last night at the Oscars. Dakota Johnson took her mother to the Academy Awards. Melanie Griffith, an actor in her own right, to everyone's surprise had not yet seen her daughter's first starring role. What follows is a partial body language analysis.

Just as Melanie is asked if she has seen "Fifty Shades of Grey" - Dakota begins to display an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR). She knows what her mom's answer is going to be and the inward lip roll is (subconsciously) partially suppressing her negative emotions - as well as a more dramatic facial expression (0:36).

Dakota is pleading to her mother with mild fear face and elevated central forehead contraction (CFC). This one expression very commonly used when trying to engender empathy in another.

Melanie is tight-lipped, nonverbally projecting, "I don't want to say it ...."

As her elevated CFC persists,
Dakota's mid-face is projecting a Rationalization Rapport Empathy Expression (R2E2) - she's verbally and nonverbally asking her mother to agree with her - at least here, on the red carpet (e.g., Pleeeease!? Mom!)

Melanie is staring - her upper eyelids elevated higher than baseline and with a tight-lipped (now beginning to down-turn) false smile persisting

As Dakota says, "Alright! You don't have to see it [inaudible]" - she displays a Subtle Eye Roll - which projects both her Contempt & Dismissive feelings.

Meanwhile Melanie's mouth is configured in a Tight-Lipped False-Smile while her mid-face is also manifesting Disgust.

Dakota then Melanie each then turn their heads (and Dakota her back) away from each other - signaling dissociating, distancing, disliking and disagreeing emotional tones.

Dakota is displaying a forward lip purse when her mother says, "If she tells me to see it, I will go see it."

Lip pursing, in this cluster-context, is a strong nonverbal signal of clandestine disagreement. Dakota does not at all believe her mother will watch her break-out movie. Dakota is also projecting disgust.

Johnson's partial eyelid closure here is an amplifier of her both her disbelief and disgust.
