Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3184: Erin Andrews' Eye Roll upon and "Dancing with the Stars" semifinalist Noah Galloway proposing to his girlfriend Jamie Boyd live after he performing to "Time of My Life" - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Erin Andrews spoiled the party last night on "Dancing With the Stars". Noah Galloway - a semifinalist and a war hero proposed to his girlfriend, Jamie Boyd .... and Ms. Andrews let her true feelings leak out. What follows is a partial body language analysis of the above video.

Eye Roll - a classic display of impatient-dismissal with strong components of contempt.

In addition, Andrews' lower and mid-face are also displaying additional elements of contempt.

The eye roll is a conscious/edge-of-consciousness nonverbal, thus Ms. Andrews' claim that she was feeling empathy for the Noah and Jamie - and that she was trying to suppress tears - is a blatant lie.

A few seconds earlier we can see Jamie Boyd in the midst of one common nonverbal configuration sometimes seen when one is trying to suppress tears. Surprising to some people, the jaw is clenched and jutted forward (similar to what other emotion?). Her chin is also dimpling and her nostrils are flared. Some will also be surprised to learn that this is a very sincere smile - despite her down-turned mouth corners. Her mouth/jaw/lips are in the midst of the act of preventing her from crying.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3034: Body Language of High Affection - "Most Amazing Marriage Proposal Ever" - Christmas Eve 2013 - Jamie & Tyne Owen - Family Photo Surprise (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Many people chronically confuse flirting behavior with affection - as well as sexual attraction/sexual behaviors with affection. While of course there is some overlap, these emotions and their corresponding body language signals are different phenomena. And there are of course many nonverbal displays of affection.

Last Christmas Tyne Owen proposed to his then-girlfriend Jamie in a very creative way (above video and captured in the image below). Head-to-head, head-to-shoulder and head-to-neck contact are all indicative of a high degree of affection. Head/neck tilting itself also has an emotional comfort and emotional vulnerability associated with it - e.g., the kind of vulnerability where you are "inviting" someone into your world - and not a vulnerability of weakness. Of course such affection and deliberate emotional exposure is not limited to romantic love.

Sincere affection displays are signals of true love and their waxing and maintenance are highly correlative with the crescendo and subsequent preservation of a healthy relationship ... while their waning indicates a rift, declination and, when precipitous, may even indicate infidelity. False affection displays are easily spotted if you know the nonverbal nuance.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2645: Justin Timberlake Helps Fan Propose During Concert (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last Saturday night during a concert in Louisville, Kentucky, Justin Timberlake went way out of his way to make an extra-special night for Josh Clemons and his girlfriend, Kim Martin. Months before Josh had contacted Timberlake's manager to see if he could perhaps dedicate a particular song ("That Girl") so he could have a grand marriage proposal. Timberlake decided to do much more and arranged to invite the couple up on stage and gave them the limelight (see video above).

In this image captured from the above video, Ms. Martin covers her mouth suddenly with here free, left hand (a few moments later she repeats this with her right hand). This body language is seen during moments of significant emotional processing. Said another way, the rational/logical brain knows what is happening - yet the emotional brain is trying to catch up and digest the emotional significance of the moment and event.

This gesture is not uncommon - and it is seen during both positive and negative emotional states; however the people who display this nonverbal signal at such times have higher overall "empathy quotients". In addition this particular MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) is, in the moment, a reliable indicator of sincerity. Do you know any other signals of high (or low) empathy?

In this second edited version of the same event, a brief interview with Clemons and Martin is included. At the very end of this video (and captured in the image to the left) there is a beautiful example of both couples exhibiting the same nonverbal display - an asymmetrical and suppressed, sincere mouth smile. Many times an asymmetrical smile is indicative of either an insincere smile or can be confused with contempt. In addition, during the initial stages of a sincere smile with a slower onset, most people tend to begin the smile on one side before the other side joins in.  This configuration can also be seen as a sincere smile wanes away. Do you know how to differentiate all of these mouth asymmetries?
