Body Language Analysis No. 4152: Ruby Rose and her Mother's (Overgrown) Pig - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Ruby Rose was recently a guest on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. She was promoting her soon to be released film, Pitch Perfect 3. She also discussed her trepidation toward a pig (who had grown unexpectedly large) she had purchased for her mother. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of her conversation with Jimmy Fallon.

On multiple occasions during her interview, Ruby Rose displays a classic and particular nonverbal signal which you've no doubt seen, yet is rarely discussed in any body language text: Asymmetrical Blinking.

During, 1:11, Ruby Rose Rolls her Eyes - both of them. This bilateral ocular display transmits the thought-emotions of:

• Contempt
• Impatient Dismissal

A split second later, also during 1:11, Ruby Rose displays an example of asymmetrical blinking. Asymmetrical blinking occurs when one eyelid closes while the other remains partially open - and/or when one eyelid re-opens whilst the other remains closed/mostly closed.

Asymmetrical Blinking frequently is seen multiple times in rapid succession, but it may also occur at a slower frequency and singularly.

She repeats the Asymmetrical Blinking once again during 3:08.

While Eye Rolling and Asymmetrical Blinking both project (in part) the emotion of Contempt - Asymmetrical Blinking also indicates thought feelings of:

• Sarcasm
• Pretentiousness
• Feigned Disbelief 

It's helpful to think of Asymmetrical Blinking as a Partially Suppressed Eye Roll.

Fascinatingly, while an eye roll occurs primarily at the level of consciousness (a deliberate act) with some dips into the edge-of-consciousness, Asymmetrical Blinking is a somewhat deeper phenomenon - happening mostly at the edge-of-consciousness but partially diving into the subconscious.

Summary: Asymmetrical Blinking is a nonverbal amalgam, displaying the emotions of Contempt - and also Pretentiousness, Sarcasm, and Feigned Disbelief.

Whenever you see Asymmetrical Blinking, it should signal to you that there is a component of hyperbolic behavior and Insincerity present.

Shakespeare would say, Asymmetrical Blinking is a classic nonverbal example of:

"The Lady doth protest too much, methinks."

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3385: Adele, "Hello" and SNL - Body Language Tell (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Last weekend Adele was a guest on Saturday Night Live. Just after singing Hello she displayed a cluster of nonverbal signals which, when you see them - will ring familiar. She juts out her tongue, crosses her eyes and lowers her body height (primarily via a knee bend). Of these three components, the tongue jut is the more common one (although here they convey the same thought-feelings).

Many would call this a variety of a "goofy" or "silly" face. And although these signs are primarily subconsciously initiated, there's often an edge-of-consciousness quality present. This expression (either portion) is frequently seen when an actor or performer (professional or amateur) "comes out of character" - within the first seconds post-performance, e.g., a feeling of strong relief (It's crucial here to think very loosely with respect to the idea of "performance" - for it can just be a small portion of a conversation - even in a business context). It indicates self-deprecating emotions with some level of embarrassment.

Moreover and often under-appreciated, this expression is also associated with individuals who have relatively high sincerity quotients. With what other personality trait is this behavior cluster seen?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2916: Rory McIlroy, the PGA Championship and Body Language of Self-Contempt (PHOTO)

Rory McIlroy won his fourth Major yesterday - becoming the third youngest to do so. Many feel he has a better chance to catch Jack Nicolas's record of 18 major wins than does Tiger Woods.

In this image, McIlroy he has just left his tee shot on the 8th hole (at Valhalla Golf Club) just short of the green. An eye roll is a nonverbal signal of contempt - moreover the vast majority of the time it is a deliberate and thus conscious display - although it can sometimes be an edge-of-consciousness phenomenon. Although eye-rolling is usually directed at others, in this moment McIlroy was filled with self-contempt (and what other thought-emotion?).
