Body Language Analysis No. 4312: South Korea Defeats Germany at The World Cup - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

On Wednesday South Korea defeated Germany 2-0 at the World Cup. The German national team was not only the defending champions, but this loss also resulted in their elimination in the first round - which hasn't happened in 80 years. In the image above Mario Gomez (23) and Mats Hummels (5) are seen just after the match.

When confronted with defeat or when witnessing an emotionally disturbing event, we will frequently quickly move our hands to the top/sides of our heads. This nonverbal tell is commonly displayed by the losing athletes in sporting competitions when the other team scores - or near the end of an unsuccessful game/match/race.

This second photo, taken from a different angle a few seconds after the first image - shows Gomez and Hummels- along with another teammate, Joshua Kimmich (18).

This rapid hands-to-head behavior is partially is a symptom of emotional processing. For while the intellectual mind may know what has happened/is happening - the emotional mind has yet to fully to come to terms with the events - and the ramifications.

Soldiers in the act of surrendering/prisoners of war (as well as individuals upon police arrest) will very often display identical nonverbal behavior. Once captive, of course, they have no choice - they are forced. Obviously, this posture of surrender lessens the chances of physical retaliation and escape - but quite strongly, this body language also engenders beta emotions of psychological and physical weakness.

SUMMARY: The hands-to-head configuration is a sign of emotional processing in the face of witnessing or hearing a dramatic emotional event. It also makes a defeated person feel more even more beta, vulnerable, and hopeless. It's a form of negative nonverbal biofeedback. Thus, from a sports psychology perspective, this is one nonverbal behavior which we should never allow ourselves the luxury of displaying on the pitch, field, diamond, rink, or track.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3839: Andrew Garfield, Ryan Reynolds and Ryan Gosling - Embarrassment, Protection, Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During his recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Andrew Garfield recounted his kissing incident with Ryan Reynolds at the Golden Globe Awards (look in the upper left hand quadrant of the image immediately below). It's an entertaining story - but it also provides many classic nonverbal tells.

Perhaps the most dramatic of these body language moments was captured during the video's 1:15 - 1:16 segment (image below).

Note Andrew Garfield's nonverbal cluster display:

1. Whole Body Pointing away from Graham Norton - 'the instigator'
2. Legs crossed (with his right leg crossed over his left - away from Norton)
3. Leaning Backward
4. Arms pulled inward with both upper and lower arms held close to torso
5. Facial Touching
6. Dorsiflexion of Left Wrist

Despite the fact that Andrew Garfield is an excellent actor (e.g., he's a 2017 Oscar nominee for best actor) - when he's 'in his own skin' - he's no better at suppressing his body language then the average person.

Although Garfield is embarrassed, this rather beta body language cluster is primarily indicative of low emotional comfort, low confidence level and high anxiety. It's also very protective - with all of his limbs drawn inward.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3446: Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Body Language (PHOTOS)

Yesterday the Denver Broncos beat the New England Patriots 20-18 for the AFC Championship and the right to play the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50. Much was made of the match-up between their respective quarterbacks - Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. While Brady's Patriots has been victorious in the majority (11-6) in overall games vs. Manning - Peyton leads in wins when it comes to payoff games (3-2).

These two images were captured after different games in different seasons. The picture above shows Manning (orange jersey) and Brady just after last night's game, while the photo below was from 12 October 2012 when the Patriots were victorious (31-21).

In each of these post-game meetings, the losing quarterback is the first to turn away from the conversation. While the face and eyes lag, remaining partially turned toward the winner, the respective losing athlete rotates their bodies away. The loser is the first to disengage. Thus while both of these men are high-alpha personalities, the contexts of these meetings are opposite - with Manning being the winner and therefore projecting his relative-alpha, whole-body pointing toward Brady (relatively beta) in the moment above - with the reverse occurring in the scenario below.

If we could see the configuration of their legs, it's highly likely that in each of these situations the winning QB would have his feet more widely planted, while the loser's feet would be close together. Lower extremities are the first to acquiesce while the face and eyes linger.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3405: Republican Debate, Ben Carson and Timidity - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Anytime the verbal language and the body language are contradictory - it's the body language which is always correct. Everyone, Politicians included, send out these disparate messages constantly - and yet few can spot the specific signals consistency.

In this short video segment from the Republican Debate last night in Las Vegas, we see an excellent example of this nonverbal rule. 

Beginning at 0:44 Dr. Ben Carson says, "Right now, the United States of America is the patient - and the patient is in critical condition - and will not be cured by political correctness - and will not be cured by timidity."

This variety of MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) - is often colloquially referred to "Hand Wringing" and indicates a high level of anxiety with a significantly beta emotional tone.

Keeping the elbows (and therefor upper arms) close to the torso during a gesture (Illustrator) is particularly demure and projects low levels of confidence.

This image captured as Dr. Carson says, "timidity", again shows his low level of assertiveness and low self-confidence.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3148: Tidal's (Re)Launch - Jay Z, Kanye West, Deadmau5 & Madonna - Four Different Standing Configurations - Four Different Thought-Emotions - Body Language (PHOTOS)

The above image was captured last week at the re-launching of the TIDAL music streaming service. While this is but a moment in time, it does provide a very useful body language teaching moment.

Madonna is standing in a modified fig-leaf position. She is of course, a very alpha personality - yet in THIS particular moment, she's definitely feeling more beta and with a lower confidence level than she's been on many an occasion.

Deadmau5 is standing with his hands in his back pockets and his thumbs-forward. This is a good alpha-beta hybrid stance and shows a high-confidence, but not one that is too high or too assertive.

Kanye West is standing with his arms crossed in front of his chest and without his hands visible. This signals he's defensive, closed-minded and - when we correlate this with his facial expression - we can say that Kanye is also feeling threatened and impatient. He wants out of this spot-light. He feels very beta and acquiescent to Jay Z's alpha, intelligence and relatively superior social skills.

Jay Z has his hands behind his back. We cannot tell how they are clasped, yet we can say this is a very confident, alpha stance. It sends signals of leadership and strength - yet as with all alpha signals, if this is over-displayed (for longer durations) - it will transmit signals of hyper-alpha mindsets, arrogance, aloofness, and condescending emotional tones. It's not surprising that he's standing this way since he's the principle business actor of the new Tidal music-streaming service, but he should not remain this way for too long.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2874: Truck Driver Calls Out Cop for Speeding and Talking on Cell Phone (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

A few days ago an Illinois State Trooper pulled over a truck driver for unlawful use of his horn - and clearly state that he's going to get a ticker for doing so (beginning at 1:06). Most of this encounter with the police officer is caught on video (which the driver has posted on YouTube and it's gone viral).

Early in the encounter the Trucker informs the officer that he is videoing the event (1:11) - and the officer says he's also doing so. Below is a partial body language analysis of the state trooper.

Emotional tone at 2:25, just as he says, "... I looked at your record ....", the officer displays a classic nonverbal expression of fear - both in the mouth and on his neck.

Expression at 2:31 just after he says, " .... so I didn't write you a ticket ..."

More "mouth of fear" and "neck of fear". Also his eyes are congruent with this emotion as his lids are opened wider.

At 2:35 he displays more fear, just after he says, "... I didn't want to - I didn't want to hurt your record ..."

A classic microexpression of regret is displayed at 2:36

At 3:06 another great example of a fear mouth is seen as he says, "... you saw me speeding ..."

3:25 an pout-agreement expression highly consistent with beta emotional tone and acquiescence.












This officer was in fear that he said something wrong or did something wrong and that it was captured on video. It is possible that he also has trepidation regarding his own internal affairs department or his relationship with them.

The trooper also has multiple examples of statement analysis consistent with his belief that his conduct was in error. How many did you note? Statement analysis (language analysis) coupled with experienced body language analysis are extremely reliable tools when evaluating for truth vs. deception and sincerity vs. insincerity.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2152: Second Presidential Debate - 16 October 2012 - Barack Obama's Duping Delight - Benghazi, Libya Attack was an "Act of Terror" - Alpha, Beta, Confidence & Acquiescence ....

During last night's second 2012 U.S. Presidential debate, the attack on the American Embassy in Libya was of course raised. Note that as soon as the Moderator (Candy Crowley) said, " ... Secretary of State ... " President Obama's feet immediately configured to his widest stance of the evening (Mitt Romney, in general, kept his feet too close together for much of the debate - this is interpreted too acquiescing and beta). When the feet are positioned about a shoulder's width distance apart - it projects and is indicative of a higher level of confidence and authority. He then very briefly held the microphone with two hands in front of his lower abdomen when Crowley said, " .... she takes full responsibility for the attack on the Embassy in Benghazi ...." - indicating, transiently, a lower level of comfort with how he was going to respond to this question of full responsibility. Such emotional dissonance is common in a stressful scenario. Between the two competing emotions of confident authority vs. his anxiety about answering however - the alpha emotional tone of the Commander-in-Chief won out - and he no longer displayed this self-touching, self-comforting MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) configuration. Indeed Obama readjusts his feet to an even wider stance (0:23) as he "digs in" to answer this question with force.

Moments later as President Obama recounts his press conference in the Rose Garden on 12 September 2012, he uses the "Dominant Spider" (0:43 - 0:44) and its more assertive cousin "The Claw" (0:45 - 0:49) to help illustrate his recounting of the events. The second he spoke about, " .... we are going to hunt down those who committed this crime ..." (0:49 - 0:50 and again at 0:51 - 0:53) he displayed an accusatory "Index Finger Point" (aka Forefinger Point) toward the audience (I would have advised him to point down instead, only with a greater arm-shoulder display of force and greater verbal emphasis and volume). He then switched to the less aggressive "Loose Fist Thumbs Up" aka LFTU (0:53 - 1:01) gesture when he spoke about receiving the caskets of the four Americans and grieving with the families at Andrews Air Force Base (although his fist could have been more loosely configured - it was still too tight). The LFTU is a great "alpha-beta hybrid" nonverbal which is not overly aggressive and yet still displays a good level of confidence. Obama then dialed up his assertiveness once again with an index finger point with wagging at Governor Romney (1:23 - 1:24) ".... is offensive, that's not what we do ..." The extra wagging nonverbal modifier acts as an amplifier for the President - reminding the former governor (and everyone else) that HE is commander-in-chief. In this context it worked to Obama's advantage, but here it is a relative exception - for most of the time this body language illustrator will project arrogance and patronizing emotions. The President gets a pass here because for a moment, even many republicans are attempting to empathize with the weight of responsibility of four dead Americans.

Obama then displays a great body language cluster as he further admonishes Romney when he says, "....That's not what I do as President. That's not what I do as Commander in Chief ....". Note how he rotates & tilts his head/neck with his chin turning away with his head tilting towards Mitt. He also displays an extended blink which further drives home his scolding. In addition a subtle anger glare can be seen at 1:26 - 1:27 and at 1:28 (about a 2 or 3 on a 1-10 scale). He also shows us his right forehead-eyebrow slightly elevated in a body language tell of incredulity. The vast majority of the time, nonverbal experts will speak of the hands & arms when talking about illustrators - however these are all great examples of facial illustrators.

President Obama then turns his back on Governor Romney as he walks to his chair (1:31 - 1:34) - a beacon of disrespect and dismissal.

Mitt Romney's bilateral eyebrow flash - entire width elevated forehead (1:49) - is a common nonverbal signal of demand for a verbal response to a question. President Obama then displays a subtle "Duping Delight" with a slight left-sided smile (1:54) after he tells Romney, ".... Please proceed Governor ....." . Mitt Romney sees this body language and immediately senses that something (from his point of view) is amiss. This is demonstrated verbally by the candidate's extended stuttering during the 1:54 - 1:56 segment. More obvious and similar duping delight is again demonstrated during 2:03 - 2:06 and again at 2:07 - 2:09. Obama turned what could have been a very injurious issue into what many thought was his best moment of the night.

There were, of course, many other body language tells in this video. These were a few highlights. Obama made a clear comeback in this second debate - both verbally and nonverbally. Will it be best of three?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 1517: Signals of Acquiescence and Regret Rick Santorum Drops Out

Rick Santorum suspended his campaign for the U.S. Republican Presidential nomination today. At the 0:06 - 0:07 mark-time in this video, Santorum displays a forward head and neck movement as he looks down that's moderate in frequency and amplitude (acquiescence). It has a twisting motion to it and it finishes-up with a forward-bounce component. There is also bilateral eyelid closure (emotional blocking-trying to wipe it from one's mind) occurring at the 0:07 second mark. Together with the asymmetrical (more pronounce on Santorum's right, so there's an element of contempt here as well), thinned-lipped, pulling back of the corners of his mouth (at the 0:10 mark) - constitutes a nonverbal cluster consistent with that of bitterness-regret-acquiescence.
