Body Language Analysis No. 3971: Elon Musk, Amber Heard, Affection, and Ownership - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Amber Heard is an accomplished actor. Elon Musk is one of the most influential people on the planet. Mera and the man who wants to colonize Mars have been romantically linked for months. Musk first became infatuated with Heard in 2013 during the filming of "Machete Kills", in which they both appeared. The image above is from Heard's Instagram taken during their recent trip to Australia.

From a body language perspective, when we lean on another person in public - it's an open declaration of "ownership". We want others to see we belong to each other. While hand and waist holding are certainly also are affectionate in nature, they too partially serve to send the same territorial signals - "We are a couple now". And although we didn't see Amber kiss Elon, her deliberate remnant of lipstick similarly marks her man.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3533: Johnny Depp and Amber Heard - Australian Biosecurity - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last May Amber Heard allegedly tried to smuggle her two dogs (Pistol and Boo) into Australia - and she recently pled guilty to falsifying travel documents. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard recorded a video apology which the Australian Government (Australian Government Department of Agriculture and Water Resources) then placed on YouTube on 17 April 2016.

The following is a partial nonverbal analysis of the Hollywood couple's mea culpa.

At 0:03.7, Depp Displays a Microexpression of Disgust as Heard says "Australia ..."

During 0:10, Johnny purses his lips just after he says, "... it has to be protected." Lip pursing is significant for Clandestine Disagreement (or Clandestine Plans).

During 0:21, Depp is leans significantly backward with his head and neck. This posture projects contempt and exemplifies the classic, "Looking Down The Nose" arrogance after he says, "and Australians are just as unique ..."

0:37, More Disgust after he says, "Declare everything when you enter Australia"

Despite what words might say - an apology is never sincere without matching sincere body language (and also vocal qualities). Depp's nonverbal behavior was not congruent with either his or Heard's words - thus this was not a sincere apology.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2775: Johnny Depp is wearing Amber's Engagement Ring - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last night Johnny Depp was on the "Late Show with David Letterman". Apparently Depp's wearing a woman's engagement ring which didn't fit his fiancée - Amber Heard. Johnny then started wearing it himself and he bought Amber another.

Hmmm .....

One of many great nonverbal displays in this video is known as a Rationalization Rapport Empathy Expression (R2E2) and it occurs during the 0:55 - 0:57 segment. At 0:49 Letterman begins, "... ah, so you go out and, and ... Well, nobody knows anybody's finger size, do they?" Depp answers, "[R2E2 with head shake and while twisting the same ring as well as displaying an extended blink] No .... it's a big fallacy!"

The R2E2 nonverbal may be seen as a microexpression or near microexpression - however it also much may be of longer duration (here it lasts for about 2 seconds). It is often confused with the expression of disgust (do you know how to differentiate them?).

We all make this nonverbal occasionally - however whenever you see an R2E2, ask yourself - "What (and why) is this person trying to convince me of?" They are often trying to rationalize an idea which they do not believe in very strongly - and they're trying to recruit you as co-rationalizer. They are trying to dial up your empathy and gain rapport (ergo its name - Rationalization, Rapport, Empathy Expression).

In the sales world, this expression is utilized very often - and indeed it's over-used. As with all body language which may build rapport, over-use of the R2E2 will backfire and destroy it.

Be very wary of those who over-use the R2E2 - in sales and otherwise. It's a red-flag for manipulation - or worse.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2685: Amber Heard, Johnny Depp Engaged - When They Fell In Love - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Amber Heard and Johnny Depp are engaged. They met on the set of "The Rum Diary", filmed in 2011 and released in October of that same year. Depp and his long-time love of 14 years, Vanessa Paradis, announced their split in June of 2012. Depp and Heard began dating soon afterward.

In the above video, Ms. Heard is interviewed as part of a promotion for the film. There are several nonverbal cues seen here indicating her romantic interest at the time for Johnny Depp.

Dialog summary beginning at 2:02

Interviewer: "And Johnny, Johnny, I know Johnny's a very keen, passionate reader and so are you. Did you have any kind of like sharing book tips?

Heard: "Yeah."

Interviewer: "What's, what's on Johnny's list?

[Looks down to her right with suppressed smile at 2:11]

Heard: "We, we, um, we, we, we have very similar tastes in, in, in literature, poetry."

Interviewer: "What are you reading at the moment?"

Heard: "Ah [Jaw Confessional at 2:19], I am reading 'East of Eden'." [Blush, Suppressed Smile at 2:21]

Interviewer: "Oh, wow! Steinbeck."

Heard: "A classic."

Interviewer: "Yeah."

Heard: "I haven't it read in forever."

Interviewer: "You've read it before?"

Heard: "Yeah, and, and, and, somebody close to me suggested I re-read it and, and, and I'm discovering all sorts of new things." [blush, suppressed smile at 2:33]

Heard is looking down to her right. She does so at multiple strategic times [2:11 - 2:13, 2:19 coincident with jaw confessional and 2:25 - 2:30].

Most right handed people look down to their right during times, of high emotion as well as when referencing the kinesthetic.

2:19 Jaw Confessional, Looking Down to Right, Blush, Suppressed Smile

The "Jaw Confessional" is a body language signal of high sincerity - although all is not revealed in her verbal language. It is seen during moments of a re-living of strong emotional moment such as embarrassment, regret, apology, affection or love. She displays this nonverbal just prior to saying "I am reading 'East of Eden". It is not because she is lying or embarrassed she is reading the classic - it is because Johnny recommended it.

At 2:21 Ms. Heard show us a strongly Suppressed Smile with a Blush.

This cluster combination is so very strong for sexual attraction that it's almost a neon sign.

At 2:33, we see a repeat suppressed smile with Blush.

Amber Heard fell in love on the set of "The Rum Diary" - not the following year when they began dating.
