Body Language Analysis No. 4111: Selena Gomez, Francia Raisa, and a Kidney Transplant - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

If you haven't yet heard this is an incredible story of Selena Gomez - take the time to watch this video - it's very inspiring. It's about her need for a kidney transplant (her kidneys were rapidly failing secondary to Lupus). Although none of her family members were compatible as potential organ donors - her best friend and roommate, Francia Raisa - miraculously was a match.

From a nonverbal communication perspective (this image was captured during 5:12 in the above video), note Selena's facial features:

• Elevated Central Forehead Contraction (elevated CFC)
• Inner (medial) eyebrows vectored upward
• Mid-facial tension
• "Sad Mouth" configuration (laterally vectored and down-turned mouth corners)

This is a facial expression we make when we're in:

• Physical Pain
or
• Emotional Pain

But also, we make this same expression when we're feeling physical pain or emotional pain for others, via our empathy.

Regardless of one's prior empathy level, those individuals who experience an extreme emotional/physical painful event, will often undergo a permanent up-regulation of their empathy (although sometimes the opposite may occur). Selena Gomez is a very empathetic person.

In contrast, those individuals with low empathy quotients WILL NOT MAKE THIS EXPRESSION (or they'll display it out-of-context).

Body Language Analysis No. 3985: Grief, Pain, and Barometers of Empathy - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Zeid Ali (left) and Hodayfa Ali are cousins. They were in their home in Mosul, Iraq when it collapsed upon being struck with artillery fire. At the time of this photo, some of their family members were missing.

Notice how each boy's central forehead, along with their medial eyebrows, are contracted upward (an elevated central forehead contraction [CFC]).

Their mid-face regions are also very tense - most notably with tremendous flaring of the nostrils and, continuing down past the corners of the mouth, a dramatic deepening of their nasolabial folds.

Hodayfi's and Zeid's upper teeth are primarily visible (little or no lower teeth can be seen) while their lower lips are protruding simultaneous with their dimpling chins. The corners of their mouths are also pulled laterally and most notably vectored downward

Why is this image difficult to view? The answer is empathy. Why is it more uncomfortable to look at for some people than others? Because empathy varies from person to person.

These are also the faces we'll adopt when we're viewing others who are in emotional or physical pain

When a person experiences pain - be it physical pain or emotional pain - the faces they'll project will look similar to Zeid's and Hodayfa's expressions - albeit often less extreme (for all human suffering is this not this intense). However, the high percentage of people who misidentify subtle, or even moderate examples of this same expression would surprise you (and thus moments of pain are frequently overlooked). Also, there are many people who, in everyday life (often subconsciously, although sometimes certainly consciously) feign empathy, physical pain, and emotional pain.

Recognizing the sincerity of any emotion will help you better discern these insincere scenarios - and this expression, when displayed for another person, is a crucial barometer of empathy. And it's to our profound advantage to date, marry, hire, be hired by, become friends with, and surround ourselves with empathic people.

How good are you at qualifying and quantifying empathy?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3514: Casting Rey - The Force Awakens Bonus Features - Daisy Ridley's Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This recent viral video above is a portion of Daisy Ridley's audition as "Rey" for Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens.

In the portion of the video from 0:43 through 1:07, Daisy is acting as a victim who is being tortured for J.J. Abrams.

0:56

Although Ms. Ridley is quite expressive with her tears, eyes, mid-face and mouth/jaw for someone who is in significant pain (along with some anger), throughout the duration of this segment, the woman who will by Rey showed very little, indeed almost zero forehead contraction. As long there are normal functioning facial nerves and muscles, it is impossible for a person who is being tortured (via either physical pain or emotional pain) to have their forehead demonstrate so little muscular contraction. The reason for this is almost certainly the use of Botox - inhibiting facial expression (specifically her forehead) and diminishes her ability to convey emotions

In their medical training, physicians, or actors, are rarely - if ever - taught that the presence of significant levels of pain always has accompanying central forehead contraction (CFC) - not the entire width of the forehead. This knowledge comes in particularly valuable when discerning a "drug seeker" from a patient who is in sincere pain.

1:07

This moment captures more of the emotion of anger with significant lower eyelid tension, mid-face contraction, nasal flaring, bared teeth and a jaw jut.

With high levels of anger (rage) however, the eyelids are opened much wider than is seen here.

Summary: When experiencing even mild-moderate levels of pain, the central forehead muscles are always contracted. This is an absolute. The expression of a multitude of other emotions also require normal forehead muscle function - thus actors should never use Botox.

Intriguingly, when Botox treatments are administered - a high percentage of people will often display hyperbolic facial movements/melodramatic expressions in the portions of their faces' which remain functional.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3291: Molly Huddle Celebrates Early at World Championships - Body Language of Emotional Pain (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Molly Huddle was positioned to take a bronze medal in the Track and Field World Championship for 10,000 meters. Although she certainly knew better, in the emotion of the moment she began to celebrate a bit early, slowing her stride before the finish line and raising her arms. That's when her teammate, Emily Infeld, edged her out for a medal (by only 0.09 seconds). Anyone with even a modest empathy quotient who watches this clip will feel the athlete's anguish. It also provides a highly illustrative body language teaching moment.

Molly Huddle's central forehead is contracted and elevated (Elevated CFC). Concurrently her inner (medial) eyebrows are also raised. Still in state of shock-surprise, her upper eyelids are also very elevated (1:06).

Whenever there physical pain of any significance is present - or as we see here, the initial manifestations of emotional pain, there is also an elevated central forehead contraction.

A very important nonverbal corollary in these moments of emotional or physical pain - is that there must also be a simultaneous mouth expression of sadness

At the very end of this video (1:11) we see a re-emergence of the CFC which had briefly diminished with the covering of Huddle's entire face.

Facial covering (almost always occurring suddenly) such as we see here is not an attempt to prevent others from seeing one's sadness - rather it's a sign of emotional processing. The emotional brain is still trying to wrap around the ramifications of the recent events - that which the intellectual brain already knows.

This image (from earlier in the video at 0:25) captures a blending of at least 3 emotional expressions displayed on Molly Huddle's face (far right on photo):

1. Fear
2. Surprise (Shock)
3. Sadness (Grief)

Can you discern and separate the different components of these 3 emotions?

Notice also Ms. Huddle's shoulders are rounded and vectored forward - indicative of shock-sadness.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3206: Kyrie Irving, NBA Finals, a Broken Knee Cap, Physical Pain & Body Language (PHOTO)

Kyrie Irving, Cleveland Cavaliers point guard, unfortunately fractured his left kneecap in game one of the NBA Finals vs. the Golden State Warriors. He will miss the remainder of the finals with an estimated recovery time of three to four months. Golden State won the game 108-100.

From a body language perspective, whenever anyone is in significant physical pain or emotional pain, their central forehead will be contracted and elevated as Irving's is here. It's extremely important that there's a simultaneous congruent mouth expression as well (also displayed by Irving). If a person claims they are in moderate to severe physical pain and their central forehead is not contracted - they are feigning. Irving has the contributing emotional factor of knowing he will miss the rest of the 2015 NBA finals - and not be able to help the city of Cleveland win their first major sports title since the Browns in 1964.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3136: Barack Obama and Brother-in-Law Craig Robinson at Princeton's Game - Contrasting Low Empathy vs. High Empathy - Body Language (PHOTO)

Barack Obama took in a bit of the Women's NCAA basketball tournament on Saturday. Here the President is seen sitting next to his brother-in-law, Craig Robinson at the Princeton vs. Wisconsin-Green Bay game. The President's niece, and Robinson's daughter - Leslie Robinson is a freshman play on the Princeton Tigers (They won the game 80-70 but lost to first seed Maryland yesterday).

From a body language perspective, this picture is a great contrast in empathy. The President is inhaling - his cheeks collapsed in a tight-lip purse. His eyelids are slightly closed and not-tensed. Barack is leaning toward his brother-in-law and slow-punching Robinson's shoulder.

Craig Robinson is seen in an expression in what many would describe as "wincing". He is experiencing a significant level of emotional pain - his eyebrows are pulled together and downward, with eyelids closed tightly, with significant mid-face tension, his jaw clenched/teeth together, the corners of his mouth are pulled backwards-down and his head-neck are leaning backwards. Robinson is feeling a father's emotional pain as his daughter's team is being scored-on. In contrast, the President's body language-facial expression is much lower in its empathy level - it's essentially saying, "Hey bro, I know you feel it (but I don't REALLY feel it)". After all, it is not HIS daughter and of course he has been desensitized with insight to much greater sufferings.

Another significant nonverbal teaching point here is the fact that Robinson is while holding a child - and thus his arms and hands restricted - and need to be gentle. These appendages are therefore greatly dampened in what is otherwise a powerful outlet for nonverbal expression. Whenever the arms and hands are suppressed - a greater amount of expression "leaks" out via other places - and in this example we see it on Craig Robinson's face.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3038: Johnny Manziel's first NFL Start - a Representative Body Language Moment (PHOTOS)

Johnny Manziel - or as he became known from his college days at Texas A & M, "Johnny Football" - had his first NFL start today. To many fan's disappointment though, under his leadership, the Cleveland Browns were shut out 30 - 0 against their rivals the Cincinnati Bengals (Manziel completed only 10 of 18 passes for 80 yards with 2 interceptions).

In this context and moment Manziel is seen with a combination of three emotions - the beginnings of Emotional Pain (Elevated Central Forehead Contraction - but this CFC must be accompanied by a congruent mouth expression) with Fear (mouth corners are in the initial fractions-of-a-second of being pulled laterally and downward). What third emotion is present in this moment?

Note his central forehead is contracted and elevated further an instant later as Manziel's emotional pain increases.

This facial expression - one of extreme emotional pain and fear - is what we would expect to see in a person of high empathy watching a high impact car accident or a similar tragedy. This of course is only a football game though ....

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3035: John Wall, Miyah Telemaque-Nelson - and Grief, Empathy & Emotional Pain (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this touching video, John Wall of the Washington Wizards was interviewed after a double overtime win over the Boston Celtics, 133-132. The recent passing of a young girl he befriended - Miyah Telemaque-Nelson, brought this normally stoic athlete to tears.

Note Wall's Elevated Central Forehead Contraction - which, in the somewhat lower resolution image below, is more prominent slightly on his right-of-center (however the sides [lateral aspect] of his forehead remains uncontracted). This facial change is accompanied by the elevation of his inner (medial) eyebrows and slightly closed eyelids. His nostrils are also flared (very often seen prior to crying). He's also biting his lower left lip in an attempt to prevent a crescendo of his sorrow. This nonverbal cluster-context shows us that John Wall is feeling high levels of grief, empathy and emotional pain.

My condolences to family and loved-ones of Miyah Telemaque-Nelson.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2955: Adrian Peterson - a Telling Body Language Cluster (PHOTO)

Pending the resolution of the allegations of child abuse, Adrian Peterson has been deactivated by the Minnesota Vikings. The star NFL running back has been indicted for "reckless and negligent injury" of his four-year old son after he disciplined his son with a tree branch.

In this image we see a cluster of several nonverbals indicative of a heightened anxiety state. Mr. Peterson's central forehead is contracted (CFC), his eyes are opened wider than baseline with tension in his lower eyelids, he's biting his bottom lip with a mild-to-moderate dilation of his nostrils along with a mild tightening of his "mustache area" (termed so regardless of facial hair or gender). In this moment, Adrian Peterson is certainly worried and more specifically - he has a significant amount of emotional pain and mild-to-moderate fear.

Often such expressions only last a fraction of a second (e.g. microexpression or near-microexpression). However it is amazing how many otherwise socially-adept professionals mislabel these and other emotions.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2931: Miley Cyrus has a Homeless Man, Jesse Helt, accept her MTV Video Music Award (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, Miley Cyrus had a homeless man - Jesse Helt, accept her Video of the Year award (for "Wrecking Ball") on her behalf.

Mr. Helt said, “Thank you all. My name is Jesse, and I am accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving, lost and scared for their lives right now. I know, because I am one of those people. I have survived in shelters all over this city, the music industry will make over $7 billion this year, and outside these doors are 54,000 human beings who have no place to call home. If you want to make a powerful change in the world right now, please join us and go to Miley’s Facebook page. A dream you dream alone is only a dream, but a dream we dream together is reality. Thank you so much for your time.

This image and the close-up below were captured during the 0:46 mark.

In context where the remainder of the facial expressions are congruent (and yet often times they're not, in which case it has completely different meanings) - the presence of a central forehead contraction (eyebrows pulled together and upwards) - indicate emotional or physical pain being experienced directly or on behalf of others via empathy.

Jesse Helt has been homeless, and for a moment the World is watching him ask for their help.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2475:
Anthony Weiner & Huma Abedin Part IV
More Sexting Will Surface (Video, Photos)

Anthony Weiner still has more sexting which will surface. The following analysis of the New York City Mayoral Candidate's press conference last week demonstrates this clearly with both his body language and his paralanguage.

Beginning at the 8:32 mark when asked, "When was the last solicitous text message?" Mr. Weiner replies, "Um, I can't sa..., I can't say exactly. Um sometime last summer I think." This reply is loaded full with paralanguage clues indicative of deception.

The following three photos encapsulate the nonverbal components of this ill-at-ease moment. We all collectively wince for Huma in these next few seconds.

This image taken at the 8:36 mark demonstrates Anthony Weiner displaying an aborted "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR). An inward lip roll indicates the psyche's attempt to suppress a significant emotion - usually (and here) it's a negative one. The mouth simultaneously displays components of regret. In addition Mr. Weiner's central forehead is contracted (CFC) indicating a significant level of emotional pain (although in other contexts it is telling for other emotions).

In the photo above and slightly more prominently in the image immediately below (taken at 8:41), Huma Abedin's eye lids are open wider than her normal baseline, in a subtle yet very significant display of fear. Particular in the second photo she is saying with her facial expression, "Please, please, please don't let there be more!"

Asymmetry in the mouth should always be suspect for insincerity. Some people routinely speak out of one side of their mouth and this is their baseline normal (although not the case here). Can you name another interpretation of an asymmetrical mouth during speech?

Weiner's wave-off of last summer's sexting is an effort to temporally distance himself from the event (e.g. "Jeez folks, that was forever ago!" or "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!").

In this last image (captured at 8:43), Anthony Weiner again displays a very brief (slightly longer than a microexpression) signal of regret mixed with a component of anger.

In summary, Mr. Weiner has not come clean regarding all of his sexting. There is more to come. He gave ample nonverbal and paralanguage evidence in these few seconds of very telling video.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2425:
Istanbul, Turkey Protests & Police Crack Down
Reporter Gets Too Close to Tear Gas -
Body Language Signal of Sincere Physical Pain
(Video, Photos)

In the video above, reporter Holly Williams broadcasts from Istanbul, Turkey. Earlier in the broadcast she can be seen walking in the midst of Takhim square and very near the tear gas deployment and water cannons the police are using to quell the protesters.

In this low resolution image Ms. Williams can be seen rubbing her eyes. Some may question the sincerity of this nonverbal illustrator. Is it melodrama?...

In this image a few body language-facial expression signs stand out. There is a tear running down Ms. Williams left cheek which can be clearly seen here. This is more striking when viewed in the video above. Notable also is the contraction of her central forehead (CFC) muscles and concomitant upturned inner (medial) eyebrows. A central forehead contraction always accompanies significant physical or emotional pain (unless prevented by Botox - or neurological injury - which are clearly not present here ). If moderate to severe physical pain is being claimed and there is no CFC present - the pain is being feigned.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2405:
Anthony Weiner's Running For Mayor of New York
His Body Language & His Sincerity Quotient
(Video, Photos)

Anthony Weiner, former U.S. Congressman (resigned 2011) announced yesterday his candidacy for Mayor of New York City. He is of course infamous for his sexually laden tweets (2011) and then denying it on public record. His wife, Huma Abedin, a longtime aide to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and herself highly respected - is standing faithful by his side.

Above is the Youtube video wherein Mr. Weiner announced he was running for office. One expression that you never want to see very much of on anyone, is a central forehead contraction (CFC). One common meaning of this nonverbal is physical or emotional pain. Such pain may be either experienced directly by whom is expressing it, or felt secondarily via empathy for another person(s) or animal(s). When either type of pain is the source of the CFC, there should NEVER be indication of a smile - not even a trace. If these two disparate nonverbals are seen together (CFC with even a subtle smile) along with sincere sounding words - then such a body language-facial expression is a highly reliable signal of insincerity. We all make this expression occasionally - for we are all human. But be extremely wary of those who use this facial expression often. Chronic insincerity is a profound warning sign. A relatively small percentage of people (<5%) exhibit the CFC too often (there are of course many other signals of insincerity). Avoid it in business, don't vote for it in politics and run, run fast from this expression in your personal life.

Below are some nonpartisan nonverbal highlights of Mr. Weiner's video:

This image is from 0:19 in the video and shows a CFC with more than a hint of a smile. The Mayoral candidate is reminiscing warm and fuzzy memories about the neighborhood wherein he grew up. However neither emotional or physical pain are being verbally conveyed here.

Sincerity Quotient: F, Insincere

This image (0:34 mark) again shows a central forehead contraction (Do you believe there is a subtle mile?). Here the former congressman is speaking in glowing terms about memories of his mother teaching school. Again, his words are not congruent with his body language.

Sincerity Quotient: F, Insincere

This image with another central forehead contraction occurs at the 1:40 mark in the video - where Mr. Weiner admits to his past mistakes. Is he feeling emotional pain? Yes. Are the remainders of his nonverbals as well as his words and tone of voice congruent with the CFC? Yes.

Sincerity Quotient: A, Anthony Weiner is sincerely sorry.

There are truckloads of other nonverbals in the video. What others jump out at you?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2403:
Central Forehead Contraction - The Grief Muscle,
Eyes Wide Open, False Mastication &
Oklahoma Tornado Survivors

My deep condolences to those who lost loved-ones today in the Moore, Oklahoma Tornado.

Jennifer and Todd Tabor are two survivors of Monday's powerful storm which took a very similar path as the 1999 Tornado (which had the highest wind speed in history ever measured on Earth at 318 mph/512 kph). At the time of this post, there have been at least 51 fatalities and hundreds of injuries.

In the video above during the 1:14 - 1:21 segment, the couple displays several telling body language signals during this time of extreme stress:

Note that Todd's eye lids are opened wider than normal. This is a nonverbal signal that he is feeling fear (What other emotions are consistent with eyes that are widely opened?). He can also be seen moving his jaw in a chewing motion. This false mastication (or false chewing) is a common finding in high anxiety scenarios (sometimes seen with anger). Mr. Tabor displays this repeatedly and is very easily visualized in the dynamics of the video.

Jennifer Tabor's central forehead is contracted (CFC) and together with her frown (which is even superimposed over her speech) constitute a common expression of grief. The central forehead is actively contracted during times of physical or emotional pain - either felt directly or secondarily via empathy for other people or animals. In these contexts the CFC should always be accompanied by a congruent mouth expression (never with even a momentary trace of a smile).
