Body Language Analysis No. 4329: Donald Trump Jr.'s Trump Tower Meeting - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

 
On 14 July 2017, the World learned that at least one additional person attended the 9 June 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, Paul Manafort, and Natalia Veselnitskaya. The President's son failed to disclose that Mr. Rinat Akhmetshin was also present.

Mr. Akhmetshin is a Russian-American lobbyist - as well as a former Soviet counterintelligence officer. He's also suspected to have continued ties with Russian intelligence.

But was anyone else in the room? Did Donald Trump authorize this meeting?

The video above is a segment of Sean Hannity's interview of Donald Trump Jr. from 11 July 2017. Their entire exchange lasted almost 20 minutes, however, a partial nonverbal analysis of a small, but crucial segment is included here.


HANNITY (continuing at 2:07): You said in a tweet, you would fully cooperate with any investigation

TRUMP JR: Of course

HANNITY: Completely

TRUMP JR: hundred percent

HANNITY: Turn over everything that they want - and you feel you already have

TRUMP JR: I be- [stuttering] Yes

HANNITY: Yeah, and you have nothing to hide - you wanna be - that means you'll testify under oath - all of that

TRUMP JR: All of it

HANNITY: Yeah

At the end of Sean Hannity's sentence (2:16), "Turn over everything that they want - and you feel you already have", Donald Trump Jr. looks down and to his right. When eye contact momentarily diminishes during deception, the gaze most often deviates in this direction/quadrant.

Of monumental importance - Donald Trump Jr.'s mouth also momentarily adopts a Pursed Lip Configuration - more specifically a Forward Lip Purse (not to be confused with a Lateral Lip Purse).

A forward lip purse indicates a withheld disagreement and/or a clandestine plan.

Moreover, those who display the forward lip purse believe that they're the alpha - superior to those with whom they're speaking (or here, those who may be watching - the viewing audience - the betas).

In addition, individuals displaying a forward lip purse believe they have a good chance of successfully implementing and carrying out their plans.

You may have also noticed Donald Trump Jr. blinking with significantly increased frequency and duration. During this particularly long blink, he's looking straight down (the second most common direction of gaze deviation during deception) - as he says, "Yes" (2:16).

Immediately after saying, "I b- [stuttering] Yes", Donald Trump Jr. smiles - yet his mouth is asymmetrical (correlative with insincerity) - and of profound importance, he's simultaneously blushing (his blushing is easier to visualize in the dynamic context of the video).

Now, go back and watch the movement of Donald Trump Jr.'s head and neck when Sean Hannity asks, "You said in a tweet, you would fully cooperate with any investigation" - and "Completely" - as well as "Turn over everything that they want - and you feel you already have" and "that means you'll testify under oath - all of that" - after each of these prompts from Hannity, Donald Trump Jr. shook his head side-to-side in a classic "NO" gesture (illustrator). This is a five-alarm fire. Trump Jr. is very clearly disagreeing with Hannity's statements. The President's son's nonverbal behavior is saying that he won't cooperate and that he won't turn over everything to Robert Meuller.

This dynamic is impossible to capture in still images. Please watch the video to fully appreciate this behavior.

Looking further, you'll also note that Trump Jr. shrugs his shoulders very frequently during this entire interview (indicating very low confidence).

Donald Trump Jr.'s nonverbal cluster in this short exchange encompasses variations of diminished eye contact including:

• Blinking with increased frequency and duration
• Looking Down to his Right
• Looking Straight Down 
• Closing his eyes while saying, "Yes"

In addition, he displays:

• Forward Lip Pursing
• Stuttering
• Asymmetrical Smiling
• Blushing while smiling after saying "Yes"
• Very frequent shoulder shrugging throughout this entire interview
• Shaking his head side-to-side,"NO" - when he should have been nodding up-and-down, "Yes"

SUMMARY: Donald Trump, Jr.'s nonverbal behavior exhibited in this video is highly indicative of deception. The act of blushing during a smile (following an eyelid closure while saying, "yes")- as well as multiple displays of nodding "No" rather than "Yes" - and also forward lip pursing in the contexts described above - are all particularly damning signals.

Donald Trump Jr.'s nonverbal behavior in this interview also indicated, with a high degree of certainty, that an undisclosed strategy was being planned and/or executed.

Actors take note - for in an alternative reality, this clip could be used in a movie scene portraying quintessential guilt.

This is a reposting of an analysis originally published on 1 August 2016 (a little more than three months prior to the Presidential Election). The subject of this article is Donald Trump's and Russian President Vladimir Putin's relationship. More specifically, did then-candidate Trump know President Putin?

Updated cross-references at the bottom of the page, the title, and one word ("was" rather than "is") has been changed. The word "verbal" has been added and two added commas have been placed. Otherwise, the remainder of the content is unchanged.

There are many crucial moments in this video. One of particular importance is the issue of any possible relationship between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.

Beginning at 2:16, George Stephanopoulos asks the Republican Candidate for President: "What exactly is your relationship with Vladimir Putin?"

Trump answers: "I have no relationship with Putin. I have no relationship with Putin."

Now, listen again carefully to Trump's response. In his first sentence, as he says the word "relationship", he stretches out his "r" pronunciation. Also, at the end of the word he stutters so that the word sounds like "... rrelationship,ip ...".

Of paramount importance, in his second sentence - Trump's speech trails off when he says, "Putin". The word is spoken much quieter than the other words in the sentence and also when compared to Trump's overwhelming pattern of talking louder than other people around him. Moreover, within speaking that single word, ("Putin") his volume is decrescendoing - subsequently, the end of the word "Putin" can barely be heard.

As he says, "with Putin" in the second sentence, Trump breaks his eye contact with Stephanopoulos. The timing of his looking away is crucial because he is making a declarative statement with the subject of his sentence (Putin) as well as the volume patterns mentioned previously.

Moreover, Trump also looks down to his right. When a momentary drop of eye contact does occur during deception, this is the quadrant to which most right-hand dominant people will most often look (Trump is right-handed).

To review, we see the following behavior clustered during Trump's short answer:

1. Stuttering during word "relationship"
2. Decrescendo/rapidly waning volume with a crucial word ("Putin")
    A. Atypical pattern vs. rest of sentence

Donald Trump is exhibiting an absolutely classic cluster of paralanguage and nonverbal behaviors which are disparate with his words. Donald Trump believes he has a relationship with Vladimir Putin - and his belief is contradictory with his verbal statement which he made during this interview. Donald Trump was lying.

The next time Steven Spielberg is directing a scene in which an actor is telling a lie - he should look to this example.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3592: Gary Johnson, The Libertarian Party and Beta Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Gary Johnson, the 2016 Libertarian Candidate for President is featured in the above video with Erin Burnett. During the interview, whenever the camera pans out to a wider angle, we can see that the former Governor of New Mexico is wearing his Nike's.

Now if he were campaigning at a state fair or baseball game, it would be very contextual for Governor Johnson to wear athletic shoes - if he also had on jeans and a casual shirt. But in the CNN studio while wearing a suit and tie, he never should have on these shoes. We all like comfort, but appearing in such footwear with a suit during an interview in NO WAY projects presidential power. It is possible that Gov. Johnson was told or believed that the camera would only include his head and torso - yet this two term governor is not a political rookie and should never had made such a mistake. In addition, he should also know that such a casual off-camera persona directly affects the manner in which anyone - including how news professionals will treat him.

Notice also that Gov. Johnson's ankles are crossed. If we were to ask him about this he'd probably say, "Well this was comfortable" - or something similar. Yet with respect to nonverbal communication, in order for one to be physically comfortable, they must first be emotionally comfortable. This is a significantly Beta Body Language configuration. It projects a lower confidence level and tentativeness. Moreover, if alternatively he would have had one foot resting on each of two adjacent legs - along with leaning and sitting slightly forward in his chair - it would have not only looked more action-oriented, confident, strong and assertive, but such body language would have also increased his confidence level along with engendering both the fluidity of the candidate's thinking as well as his speaking (which certainly helps when you're being interviewed on national TV).

Beginning at 4:33, Johnson says, "Well one of my sssstrengths isss that I, I tell the truth ..."

Note the candidate's excessive stuttering during his declaration of honesty. This is a red flag of low confidence, anxiety - and in this context it's highly consistent with deception.

This image was captured during the last moment of him uttering, "truth" - yet Governor Johnson's eyes open very widely along with him elevating the entire width of his forehead. This is the nonverbal equivalent of a person using five exclamation marks when, in moments of sincerity, only one is needed. It's a very common body language example of over-compensatory behavior. Unbeknownst to most politicians and high-level sales professionals this sends signals of INsincerity. It destroys rapport rather than building it.

During a significant fraction of this interview, Gary Johnson has his hands positioned on his lap with the majority of them below the level of the desk. This is a major nonverbal faux pas. At the very least it transmits lower confidence levels and relative timidity. Depending on the other nonverbals with which it is clustered, this can also be indicative of deception. Never commit this error during a job interview - or when you're running for president.

These are just a few of the body language fumbles Gary Johnson made during this television appearance. If the Governor wants to poll above 15 percent - thus allowing him to participate in the debates with Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump - he simply can't afford to make these rookie mistakes.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2919: Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama - Friends? - will they Hug it Out? (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier today, Hillary Clinton appeared at a book signing on Martha's Vineyard. While there, she briefly addressed the controversy of her relationship with Barack Obama and her distancing language she used in a recent interview in The Atlantic magazine. In it, she voiced her disagreement with the President regarding his policies and decisions made about Israel, Iran, as well as arming Syrian Moderates who oppose Bashar al-Assad.

Beginning at 0:50 Mrs. Clinton says, "We agree. We are committed to the values and the security of country together. We have disagreements as any partners and friends as we are might very well have, but ah, I'm proud that I served with him, and for him and I'm looking forward to seeing him tonight."

In this image, taken during the 0:58 segment (just as she says "... friends ..."), notice how widely Mrs. Clinton's eyelids are opened. One of the most common and reliable signals of insincerity is overly frequently contracting the forehead muscles. Often co-existing with this is a similar behavior of the upper eyelids.

This is a great example of over-compensatory and over-emphasis behavior where, if sincerity were indeed present, neither the forehead nor upper eyelids would be contracted so much or so often. These nonverbals are analogous to a child using many exclamation marks at the end of a sentence. Bad actors and many politicians (and no political party is excluded) - are both examples of the chronically insincere - and thus will display this body language frequently in their efforts to convince others.

Two seconds later (1:00) the former Secretary of State displays a prolonged eyelid closure. Notice that her forehead is contracting upward while her eyelids are closing - pulling in an opposite direction of the forehead. This forehead configuration is unnatural during normal eye closure.

Again this isn't a simple blink - but one of longer duration. It is a nonverbal metaphor for emotional blocking and emotional processing. While she is a colleague of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton does share similar goals for the country - she is friendly with, but not friends with the President (and objectively, few people could be friends after vigorously campaigning against each other as they did in 2008).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2685: Amber Heard, Johnny Depp Engaged - When They Fell In Love - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Amber Heard and Johnny Depp are engaged. They met on the set of "The Rum Diary", filmed in 2011 and released in October of that same year. Depp and his long-time love of 14 years, Vanessa Paradis, announced their split in June of 2012. Depp and Heard began dating soon afterward.

In the above video, Ms. Heard is interviewed as part of a promotion for the film. There are several nonverbal cues seen here indicating her romantic interest at the time for Johnny Depp.

Dialog summary beginning at 2:02

Interviewer: "And Johnny, Johnny, I know Johnny's a very keen, passionate reader and so are you. Did you have any kind of like sharing book tips?

Heard: "Yeah."

Interviewer: "What's, what's on Johnny's list?" 

[Looks down to her right with suppressed smile at 2:11]

Heard: "We, we, um, we, we, we have very similar tastes in, in, in literature, poetry."

Interviewer: "What are you reading at the moment?"

Heard: "Ah [Jaw Confessional at 2:19], I am reading 'East of Eden'." [Blush, Suppressed Smile at 2:21]

Interviewer: "Oh, wow! Steinbeck."

Heard: "A classic."

Interviewer: "Yeah."

Heard: "I haven't it read in forever."

Interviewer: "You've read it before?"

Heard: "Yeah, and, and, and, somebody close to me suggested I re-read it and, and, and I'm discovering all sorts of new things." [blush, suppressed smile at 2:33]

Heard is looking down to her right. She does so at multiple strategic times [2:11 - 2:13, 2:19 coincident with jaw confessional and 2:25 - 2:30].

Most right handed people look down to their right during times, of high emotion as well as when referencing the kinesthetic.

The "Jaw Confessional" is a body language signal of high sincerity - although all is not revealed in her verbal language. It is seen during moments of a re-living of strong emotional moment such as embarrassment, regret, apology, affection or love. Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2434: Brad Pitt's Tongue-in-Cheek regarding Reasons for Choosing to Work on "World War Z" (Video, Photo)

Brad Pitt is interviewed in the above video regarding his upcoming film, "World War Z".  At the 0:35 mark, Angela Jolie's husband can be seen displaying a "Tongue in Cheek" nonverbal just after he says the word territory in the following sentence: " ...I, I, I, I love these big summer films and ahhh ... and hadn't really ventured into that territory ...." (The movie-star's stuttering is very notable here).

[Hmmm, take the movie "Troy" for example. It was released in 14 May 2004. A summer block buster perhaps? Or what about "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" released 7 June 2005? Each had all the fanfare and hype of a "summer blockbuster". Both of these films has also generated about half a billion dollars.]

The tongue in cheek nonverbal can have multiple meanings depending on the other specific body language-facial expressions with which it is clustered. In other contexts the tongue in cheek body language can indicate, an alpha dominant display, a sexually provocative expression, anger, sadness or grief, or "I gotcha"/"you were caught"/"I just won". In this context however, the tongue in cheek indicates that Mr. Pitt is telling a lie.

What other simultaneous and near-simultaneous nonverbals are also consistent with Mr. Pitt's attempt at deception?

Tongue in cheek displays tend to be biased to one side if the context is beta/negative (e.g. sadness, lying) and to the opposite side in an alpha/positive scenario (e.g. sexual context, I gotcha/I just won/you were caught, an outright alpha display). These left vs. right sided tongue tendencies are idiosyncratic to the person and should be normed.

When the tongue in cheek is used in the setting of a lie, this highly specific move helps in the suppression of a smile, blushing or laughter. Thus in the context of a lie it has significant overlap with the phenomenon of "Duping Delight".

Are you able to differentiate the various tongue in cheek emotions? Could you do so on the street? During a deposition? On a date? Trying to close a sale?
