Body Language Analysis No. 4087: Harrison Ford Accidentally Punches Ryan Gosling in the Face - Blade Runner 2049 - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling star in the recently released film, Blade Runner 2049. As you may have heard, Mr. Ford mistakenly punched Mr. Gosling during its filming. The image immediately below captures both of their faces a split-second after impact. What follows is a nonverbal analysis of this moment.

One very telling nonverbal signal is seen in this instant (less than a second after he received Harrison's punch) is Gosling's elevated right forehead and eyebrow. This dynamic indicates disbelief.

The actor's mouth is also in the initial stages of a surprise display - Gosling's lips are drawn in and protruding and we don't see any teeth. If we had another image from only 0.1 - 0.3 seconds later, his mouth opening would still be configured in an oval shape - only with tighter lips and with the long-axis of the oval oriented vertically.

Harrison Ford's mouth is also in the early stages of surprise - however, his mouth also has the overlying emotion of fear. As mentioned above, a mouth of surprise will display no teeth, lips oriented vertically (albeit very briefly) - but a mouth of fear orients more laterally - with each corner pulling back and downward. In this instant, these two emotions are competing against each other (with respect to the dynamics of Mr. Ford's mouth) - and the fear component is winning.

It's difficult to see the surface of his left eye - yet we can see enough to know that his eyelids are opened significantly wider than baseline. Both fear and surprise will cause widely opened eyelids.

Harrison's forehead is also very telling. A Central Forehead Contraction together with his particular mouth and eye expressions indicate that Mr. Ford is, in part, experiencing empathy for Mr. Gosling.

Significant physical pain will also result in a central forehead contraction - which Ford is certainly experiencing in his right hand (Note how he's holding/covering/rubbing his right hand with his left - as he's also doing months later as he re-lives the event on Norton's show). The retracted and protected positioning of his right shoulder and arm is highly characteristic of pain.

Although he may have been trying to be humorous, it's interesting to note that Graham Norton asks if Harrison Ford's expression is one of regret - and Ford says, "No, that's the face of 'Oh, Shit! I'm in deep doo doo.' "

Summary: When this accident occurred, each actor was transported back into the real world. Textbooks will often give the false impression that we experience feelings in an isolated and linear fashion. Yet the natural world is rarely so simple. Here we see both Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford - the people, not the actors - displaying classic examples of simultaneous and competing emotions.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2785: Oscar Pistorius - Another Day of Testimony - Low Confidence Body Language Display (PHOTOS)

Oscar Pistorius had another day of testimony today in his trial for the alleged premeditated killing of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Of course, this is a very emotionally difficult task to perform - ergo the body language we see him displaying in this image. As he is arriving at the courthouse, both of his entire hands (including full palmar contact) are splaying against his lower abdomen and hips. When seen in the manner that Mr. Pistorius is configured here, this is highly significant for a beta emotional tone. Note his hands are not in his pockets - however if they had been - there are variations of both high confidence (e.g. Thumbs hooked in pockets with fingers out) as well as other lower confidence displays (e.g. whole hands in pockets).

As with all nonverbal communication, a beta body language signal such as this should never be interpreted in isolation. This hand position of lower emotional comfort is very often seen simultaneous with a deep inhalation (difficult to assess this in this single image) as well as a myriad of other signs. What others do you see here?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2770: Oscar Pistorius and Contrasting Confidence Levels - Body Language (PHOTOS)

The image above of Oscar Pistorius (L) and one member of his legal team he's speaking with was taken on court on Friday 28 March 2014. The Blade Runner's trial in Reeva Steenkamp's death (accidental vs. premeditated murder) has been delayed for ten days due to the sudden illness of a one of the judge's two assessors.

Note the attorney has his fingers and thumb splayed with the tips touching the top of the barrier while his palm is elevated. This body language is significant for an alpha and assertive emotional tone - ergo its name, "The Dominant Spider".

In contrast, the fist-like configuration (with thumb extended) which Mr. Pistorius is displaying is significant for a beta and a lower-confidence mindset.

Nonverbal signals should never be interpreted in isolation. Rather they must always be evaluated in the cluster-context of other body language simultaneously (or nearly so) being manifested. These contrasting hand signals are no exception to this principal and are highly congruent with the other nonverbals present here.

The body language of this single moment does not imply Mr. Pistorius's guilt or innocence.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2751: Oscar Pistorius, Reeva Steenkamp, Gina Meyers and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Oscar Pistorius's trial in the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp is continuing in Pretoria, South Africa. The double amputee Olympic athlete is seen in this image in the foreground, out of focus.

In the background on the extreme left of the photo is a friend of Steenkamp's - Gina Meyers. She is seen displaying one variety of a "Critical Evaluation Cluster". Here we see the thumb of her right hand supporting the left aspect of her mandible (jaw) while her pinky finger rests on her philtrum and covers her central mouth/lips. The remainder of her fingers are on the right side of her face/cheek. This specific body language MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) is termed the "Double-L" and is a nonverbal cluster highly indicative of Critical Evaluation.

Meyers's does not believe what she's hearing.

Although details are somewhat difficult to visualize in this lower resolution close-up of this same moment, Gina Meyers's right eyebrow can be seen to be elevated compared to her left side. As expected, her right forehead can also be seen in a contracted state (with evanescent furrows). This unilateral raised eyebrow is a specific facial expression telling us she is disbelief with what she is hearing and/or seeing.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2744: Oscar Pistorius, Reeva Steenkamp and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Oscar Pistorius's trial for the alleged murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp began earlier this week in Pretoria, South Africa. The above image was taken yesterday in court. Pistorius's mouth opening/lips are configured in what is known as an partial (incomplete) "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR).

The inward lip roll is the psyche's attempt to suppress the outward manifestation and the internal escalation of strong emotion. The majority of the time this body language is seen during negative emotional moments. And although it is NOT the case in this example, the ILR may also be commonly seen during the suppression of joy-laughter and thus it may also be a component of some expressions of duping delight. It is also seen during moments of physical exertion associated with mental focus.

Intriguingly, Mr. Pistorius's pupils are quite large at this moment. Given the context of the inward lip roll and the other nonverbal clues on Oscar's face, what do his dilate pupils indicate? What about his nostrils? Are they flared or normal baseline? What is the significance of his clenched jaw muscles? Is the tension of his mid-face increased, decreased or normal? All of these additional observations provide valuable clues as to Pistorius's thoughts and the nuance of his emotional tone.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2310:
Oscar Pistorius' Body Language in Court - Part II
Central Forehead Contraction, Frown & Pupil Dilation ....

Oscar Pristorius was in court again on Wednesday 20 February 2013. There were very some interesting body language displays which can be seen in the initial portions of the video above. The South African Olympic hero's central forehead was contracted (with the sides, or lateral portions relaxed). The "Blade Runner's" mouth was consistent with a mild frown. In the absence of physical pain, when these two nonverbals (central forehead contraction with a frown) are displayed together it is highly indicative of emotional pain - either for oneself or for another person, group or animal(s) via empathy (When the central forehead is contracted simultaneous with a smile, even a mild one, and/or unilateral one, beware - for it means something completely different - and not seen here).

Another very interesting finding here is Pristorius' pupils size. They are quite dilated. In the absence of pharmaceuticals and a relatively limited set of medical conditions - particularly when camera lights are on them (light contracts pupils) - this ocular body language signal tells us that his sympathetic nervous system is significantly stimulated. Said another way, his adrenaline is quite elevated.

Oscar's elevated adrenaline is consistent with strong anxiety. Anxiety and emotional pain (either for himself and very possibly his former girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp as well) together do not indicate either guilt or innocence. However this combination of findings does tell us that Mr. Pristorius is extremely remorseful - which works against the prosecution's premise of premeditation.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2307:
Oscar Pistorius in Court, Body Language and the
Bilateral Eye Cover

Hero to many around the World, and double amputee Oscar Pistorius aka "The Blade Runner" was in court this past week in Pretoria, South Africa. He is alleged to have murdered his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. It is reported that he broke down and wept during court and this may be an image during his tears. However bilateral eye covering (and mouth covering) - is not effort to hide tears - it's a nonverbal signal of emotional processing. The emotional brain is playing "catch up" with what the five senses and the intellect is telling it. It's a body language signal of trying to temporarily "block the new reality". It speaks to the cross-cultural universality of nonverbal communication that even those who are born blind will exhibit this facial MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier).

Pistorius' red face and prominent vein seen in his right temporal region ("temple) are consistent with, but not specific for, the temporary increased intrathoracic (pressure in his chest) and thus secondary intracranial pressure (pressure in his head) seen with the physiology of the valsalva maneuver which occurs during crying.
