Body Language Analysis No. 4196: Trey Gowdy on "Face The Nation" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Trey Gowdy, the Chairman of the House Oversight Committee was a guest on Face the Nation Sunday Morning (4 February 2018). The above video contains an excerpt of that appearance. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of Representative Gowdy.

MARGARET BRENNAN (beginning at 5:38): Do you think you served justice in your time in Congress?

TREY GOWDY: [Lip smack] Ah, not like I did in my previous job - I tried, ahum [∆, Loose Tongue Jut, Side to Side Head Shaking]. It's about winning in politics - and ahum [§, Regret Expression] That is not what the [stutter]c- courtroom - there's a reason - we throw out search warrants even though we found the murder weapon. There's a reason we throw out [stutter] con, c-, confessions even though we think the person did it [Ω, Loose Tongue Jut]. The process matters [Side to Side Head Shaking]. The end does not justify the means - and in [up-talking] politics - [Side to Side Head Shaking] it's just about winning - [stuttering] and, and I, I can't, I don't wanna live like that.

During 5:45 (as he says, "ahum", and just after he says, "... not like I did in my previous job - I tried ...", Representative Gowdy displays a Loose Tongue Jut.

A Loose Tongue Jut (not to be confused with a Tight Tongue Jut) is a signal of emotions: "I've been bad" or "I've been caught" (Navarro). It has a self-deprecating element to it.

Just after saying, "... It's about winning in politics - and ...", Representative Gowdy displays a classic Regret Expression (5:48).

Another Loose Tongue Jut was displayed during 6:00, just prior to Representative Gowdy saying, "... The process matters ..."

Moreover, notice how Trey Gowdy is looking down and to his right during a large portion of this exchange. This is the quadrant that most people look toward the vast majority of the time when expressing sincere and deep sadness, regret, and/or shame. 

Summary: Representative Trey Gowdy was sincere during this segment of the interview. He feels regret, sadness - and even some shame regarding his experience in the political realm.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3920: Jason Chaffetz and Elijah Cummings - No evidence that Michael Flynn followed the law - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday, The White House announced that they are refusing to provide any documents relative to the investigation of Michael Flynn (Donald Trump's former national security adviser).

Also, earlier today, Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), Chairman of the House Oversight Committee and its ranking Democrat, Elijah Cummings (D-MD) held a brief press conference. The video above is a portion of that exchange. A portion of it is transcribed here along with a partial nonverbal analysis.

Manu Raju: "Do you believe that Michael Flynn broke the law from either not disclosing it, these payments on the security clearance, or not getting permission for getting these, ah, foreign payments?"

Jason Chaffetz: "Ah, personally I see no information, or no data to support the notion that General Flynn complied with the law - and that is - he was supposed to seek permission and receive permission from both the Secretary of State - and the Secretary of the Army prior to traveling to Russia to - not only to accept that payment to - but to engage in that activity. I see no evidence that he actually - did that..."

The image above was captured during 0:13 of the above video. Note Representative Chaffetz's forehead. Its left half is dramatically contracted upward, secondarily also raising his left eyebrow. This is strongly indicative of disbelief. Throughout the entire time he's speaking and for a second or so afterward, Rep. Chaffetz's left forehead and eyebrow maintain this configuration.

At this same moment, Representative Cummings is experiencing and displaying three emotions - anger, contempt, and disgust - the Venn diagrams of these all overlap. Note the extreme tightening of his mid-face, the greater contraction/elevation of his right mid-face, the flaring of his nostrils, clenching of his jaw, dimpling of the anterior aspect of his chin, the thinning of his lips (particularly the upper lip), and the lowering of his inner (medial) eyebrows.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3456: Martin Shkreli Pleads the Fifth before Congress - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Martin Shkreli appeared before the U.S. House of Representatives Oversight Committee today. The (recently) former CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals is infamous for hiking the price of the antiparasitic drug, Daraprim from $13.50 to $750 per pill (a 5,556% increase) after his company obtained the manufacturing license last summer. In December 2015, Mr. Shkreli was arrested by the FBI and charged with securities fraud. He has since been released on bail.

The hearing today was focused on efforts in controlling the prices of some medications. In addition to Turing Pharmaceuticals - another company, Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, had also acquired the rights to older, established drugs and then suddenly increased their prices by vast amounts.

Today Mr. Shkreli repeatedly exercised his Fifth Amendment Constitutional right in an effort to avoid self-incrimination. The members of the committee were infuriated by Shkreli's behavior. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of some key moments of his appearance (for there are truly hundreds in this short video).

During 5:44 - This is perhaps one of the best examples you'll ever see of a blend of both
Contempt along with an element of Duping Delight.

The emotion of contempt always involves the act of putting a person or group of persons below you.

Note that after his appearance today Shkreli tweeted, "Hard to accept that these imbeciles represent the people in our government."

Moreover, Mr. Shkreli sincerely believes he will not be not suffering any punishment for what he's accused.

After Rep. Cummings says, "You can look away if you like ...", and Mr. Shkreli quickly looks back toward the Maryland Congressman (6:55). Note his upper eyelids are partially closed along with a elevation of his forehead and eyebrows.


This is a classic and pronounced contempt amplifier display along with a component of feigned aloofness.

During 7:00 - A Central Forehead Contraction with partial (Insincere) Mouth Smile - is indicative of Disbelief, Arrogance and/or Contempt. Although we all make this expression occasionally - when displayed chronically, this facial cluster is highly correlative with Antisocial Personality Disorder (Sociopath).

During 7:55  (immediately above), Shkreli displays what is known as a Microexpression of increased eyelid tension (and partial closure) indicative of a anger as well as another contempt amplifier.

Please watch this segment several times to fully appreciate the evanescent nature of this nonverbal signal.

As mentioned earlier, this is just a tiny fraction of the nonverbal signals contained in this video. What other key body language did you see displayed?
