Body Language Analysis No. 4111: Selena Gomez, Francia Raisa, and a Kidney Transplant - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

If you haven't yet heard this is an incredible story of Selena Gomez - take the time to watch this video - it's very inspiring. It's about her need for a kidney transplant (her kidneys were rapidly failing secondary to Lupus). Although none of her family members were compatible as potential organ donors - her best friend and roommate, Francia Raisa - miraculously was a match.

From a nonverbal communication perspective (this image was captured during 5:12 in the above video), note Selena's facial features:

• Elevated Central Forehead Contraction (elevated CFC)
• Inner (medial) eyebrows vectored upward
• Mid-facial tension
• "Sad Mouth" configuration (laterally vectored and down-turned mouth corners)

This is a facial expression we make when we're in:

• Physical Pain
or
• Emotional Pain

But also, we make this same expression when we're feeling physical pain or emotional pain for others, via our empathy.

Regardless of one's prior empathy level, those individuals who experience an extreme emotional/physical painful event, will often undergo a permanent up-regulation of their empathy (although sometimes the opposite may occur). Selena Gomez is a very empathetic person.

In contrast, those individuals with low empathy quotients WILL NOT MAKE THIS EXPRESSION (or they'll display it out-of-context).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3885: Vogue's 73 Questions with Selena Gomez - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Vogue continues its 73 Questions Series with Selena Gomez. Creatively, Vogue films these 'interviews' in a single shot (without cutaways) - and although we hear the interviewer, we never know his name or see his face - which allows us to, much more easily, put ourselves into his shoes. And although she was surely aware of the specific questions prior to the Q & A, a careful look at Selena's body language gives us a deeper glimpse into her psyche.

One question which causes Ms. Gomez to reflect deeply is asked at 3:19:

Interviewer: Where do you see yourself in - ten years?

Selena: [deep inhalation and exhalation] Hopefully happy.

As the interviewer asks the question, Selena takes a deep inhalation - then, as she is exhaling (also deeply), she looks down-to-her left. Her eyelids are partially closed during this time (3:22).

After she says, "Hopefully Happy" (3:23), Selena displays several extended blinks (longer duration) as her mouth transforms into a classic expression which is an amalgam of both regret and anger.

This final image, from 3:24, shows Selena with the primary emotion (expression) of anger. Notice, in particular, the thinning of her lips - with her mouth taking on a more horizontal orientation. There's also a partial closure of her eyelids with a tension in her lower lids. The region above her upper lip and below her nose is also taught.

Summary: Selena Gomez has significant regret for her past and anxiety for her future. She also briefly felt anger during this interview - which was probably directed at the person whom she feels is the cause of her regret.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3574: Selena Gomez's Body Language Reaction to Fans in Montreal (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Selena Gomez was taken aback on Thursday during a concert in Montreal. As she broke into the chorus of "Who Says" - members of audience held up signs which read, "We Are". Moreover they also began singing the song in her stead.

It has been reported that Ms. Gomez "teared up" in response - and although this could have certainly occurred (and she did experience significant affection for the audience in this moment, [see below]), she did NOT in fact cry.

The confusion naturally arises due to an assumption, for Selena did rub/touch her (left) eye. Upon seeing or hearing something (a stimulus) we don't quite believe (whether it's good or bad) - an eye rub or touch is a very common nonverbal response. Here, Selena is processing what she is seeing and hearing - but it's also something for which she (at least a portion of her psyche) has a substantial amount of disbelief.

Her emotional brain is still processing that which her senses (and intellect) already knows to be true.

In the moment below, Selena initiates a "self-hugging" display. She hugs herself as a surrogate for hugging the audience.

A moment later (below) Selena blushes as she also tucks her head in a chin down, turning and tilting configuration. This head/neck dynamic acts as both an affection and sincerity amplifier to the co-existing self-hugging display.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3341: Selena Gomez, Ghosts and Jimmy Fallon - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Selena Gomez's appearance on the Tonight Show earlier today provides a great demonstration of a multitude nonverbal behavior tells (Fallon's original video has been removed from YouTube). One of these is discussed here.

Ms. Gomez says she believes ghost and spirits to be very real - and thus she has an app on her phone to detect their presence - and she demonstrated this for Jimmy Fallon and the audience.

After moving on to other subjects - after Selena channeled Johnny Cash while singing "Ring of Fire" - the signal on her Ghost Hunter M2 App sounded the alarm .... perhaps the Man in Black was singing a duet with her.

During 4:52 - 4:53 Ms. Gomez displays a classic facial expression of sincere surprise. Surprise is an emotion which is commonly feigned, yet if you know what to look for - you won't be fooled. Note how Selena's mouth opens primary with a vertical component. When people fake a surprise expression their mouths' open primarily horizontally - with the upper and lower lips being quiet taught. In sincere surprise, although very briefly - the lips are loose and plump.

Moreover a sincere surprise expression will not reveal teeth for the first second or two. Thereafter, as the surprise is replaced (partially [4:54] or fully) by other emotions - the teeth are usually revealed - but if the smile is sincere - they will be covered by the loose lips in the initial display.

Of course, during sincere surprise the eyelids also open wider. This too is often very brief and may be subtly opened (more difficult to spot in real-time) to extremely wide - depending on the level of surprise. Selena's eyes exemplify this prototypical "White and Wide" nonverbal signal - along with a simultaneous elevation of her eyebrows.

Is Selena's belief in ghosts 100% - or does she have some doubts? During this video, what is her primary anxiety tell?
