Body Language and Behavior Analysis No. 4754: Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein – A Dangerous, Duplicitous, and Predatory 'Smile' – Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence

Note the peculiarities in the above image of Jeffrey Epstein and Donald Trump. Both such set-off your internal alarm bells. Neither of these facial expressions are sincere smiles. Far from it...

The lateral aspects of each man's lips are being pulled-in, they're not visible – while their central lips are pronounced, pooching forward. These are not anatomical idiosyncrasies. These expressions are behavioral, momentary, and fleeting.

This is a (relatively uncommon to rare) variation of a forward lip purse (clandestine plans, undisclosed disagreement) – but with an additional layer of warning: indicating predatory and malicious intent.

Two actors come to mind who use this expression to their advantage when portraying evil and sadistic characters – Jim Carrey's version of the 'before Grinch'. ...

... And Benedict Cumberbatch as Star Trek's Khan Noonien Singh.

While each of these theatrical examples are hyperbolic, and those of Trump and Epstein are less extreme, the ramifications of real world behaviors hold much more horror.

SUMMARY: When the central lips are protruding forward with a simultaneous pulling-inward of the lateral lips (resulting in an absence/near-absence of the lateral lips), this is a red-flag for predatory intent.

Body Language Analysis No. 4281: Michael Cohen's Duplicitous Smile - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Michael Cohen has been using his shell company not only to funnel hush money to Stormy Daniels - but he's also received more than $1,000,000 from Russian oligarchs, $600,000 from AT&T, greater than $1,000,000 from Novartis, and $150,000 from Korea Aerospace Industries.

Whenever assessing someone's nonverbal behavior, one particularly crucial red flag for which you always should be on guard - is the insincerity of insincere "smile". This axiom is amplified when such feigned smiles are frequent.

Now, there are many varieties of fake smiles - however sincere smiles have much less variation. This principle is analogous to the first sentence of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina:

“Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”

One of Michael Cohen's default facial expressions is characterized in both of these images.

While it's true that sincere smiles can begin asymmetrically, as they fully form they will bloom into symmetry - projecting true joy-happiness. Cohen's "smile" however, remains one-sided.

Suppressed but sincere smiles can also sometimes be dampened on one-side - but once again, efforts at quelling sincere smiles are quite difficult - and the true smile nearly always "leaks"/pushes through.

It's profoundly important to bear in mind that the subjects, events, discussions, ideas, etc. which engender your smiling - may be very different than those of a person with nefarious motives.

Medical etiologies for lopsided smiles must also be considered (e.g., residual facial nerve palsies [such as Bell's Palsy], stroke, old injury, surgical complications, etc.) - none of which applies in Cohen's case.

To nuance this Michael Cohen's expression even further - one side of his mouth (typically his left) is contracted upward - while the other mouth corner is turned down (most often his right). Depending on the other nonverbal signals with which this is clustered, this mouth configuration - at best - indicates superficial sarcasm - yet the vast majority of times it's deeply duplicitous.

SUMMARY: The next time you encounter this insincere "smile" - with one corner of the mouth turned up and the opposite side is turned down - protect your flank! You're probably about to get skinned. Careful observation will likely yield other signals of duplicity. You can be sure that what they're saying is the complete opposite vs. what they're thinking-feeling.

Body Language Analysis No. 4247: Donald Trump says Goodbye to Hope Hicks - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Thursday was Hope Hicks' last day as the White House Director of Communications. She had served at this post for approximately six and a half months - and another month as acting Director.

The video above shows her saying goodbye to President Trump just prior to his departure on Marine One. While the nonverbal elements in this brief exchange are numerous - the one highlighted here, while not as dramatic, is quite telling.

The instant captured in the image above (and the cropped-close up below, during the 0:09 mark in the above video) shows Donald Trump with his left arm around Ms. Hicks' waist, waving at the camera with his right hand - and smiling.

But wait - that's not really a smile.

Notice the left corner of Trump's mouth is elevated, while the right side is vectored downward. Such asymmetrical "smiles" - with one side up and the other side down - are always duplicitous. They're universally insincere.

Yet, even if the President's right side exactly mirrored the left side of his face - it would still not be a sincere smile, for all the other components of sincerity are missing in this moment (Can you name them?). Moreover, at no time during this departure did President Trump display a true smile of Joy-Happiness (aka a Duchenne Smile).

Fascinatingly, the side of the President's mouth which is feigning joy - is the same side as Ms. Hicks.

Summary: As he says his final goodbye to Hope Hicks, President Trump's expression is insincere. His "smile" and emotions are duplicitous.

Body Language Analysis No. 4137: Matt Lauer's "inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Matt Lauer, long-time Today Show host, was fired from NBC this morning for allegations of "inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace".

From a nonverbal perspective, one profound warning signal of insincerity is a "smile" (a feigned smile) that's asymmetrical - particularly when it's displayed chronically. One of Lauer's common go-to expressions is pictured in two examples here.

While sincere smiles can begin asymmetrically, they will then crescendo into symmetry and project other fundamental characteristics of true joy-happiness. Suppressed sincere smiles can also sometimes be curbed in a one-sided manner - but again, such attempts at stifling sincere smiles will also display the required facial signals.

To nuance one of Matt Lauer's default expressions even further - one side of his mouth (typically his right) vectors upward - while the other mouth corner is directed down (usually his left). At best this expression signals sarcasm - but very often it's outright duplicitous. If you see this type of feigned smile directed at you, take heed - for, with high probability, the person making this face has thoughts and emotions which are in direct contradiction to what they're saying verbally.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3633: David Duke's Duplicity & The US Senate - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

David Duke is an "American white nationalist, antisemitic conspiracy theorist, Holocaust denier, politician, and former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan"(Wikipedia). On Friday, 22 July 2016, Duke announced he is running for the republican nomination for the US Senate for the State of Louisiana.

The video above is Duke's YouTube announcement. There are several significant nonverbal signals in this ad, however one in particular stands out and is discussed below.

The above video ad of David Duke's ends with this expression (which appears on the video from 2:22 - 2:25). Note how the right side his mouth is down-turned in what many would label a slight frown (yet it's not), while his left side is up-turned in an attempt at a "social smile". This mouth configuration is in no way indicative of a sincere smile. This "smiling out of one side of the mouth while frowning out of the other" (aka a "Twisted Smile") is highly characteristic of duplicity and deceit and thus a profoundly valuable red flag.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3462: Donald Trump calls Ted Cruz a "Pussy" - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTO)

On Monday night, after mentioning that Sen. Ted Cruz had hesitated regarding a question on the use of waterboarding for prisoners of war,  GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump called Ted Cruz a “pussy”.

Trump used this highly derogatory and misogynist term while echoing a supporter who shouted the slang during a rally the night before the New Hampshire Primary. He immediately stopped his speech, pointed [index finger, palm down] toward the woman and said,

"She just said a terrible thing. You know what she said? Shout it out, because I don’t want to s- [woman in the audience again, yells 'Pussy!', Donald Trump laughs]... Okay. You're not allowed to say - I never expect to hear that from you again. She said - I never expect to hear that from you again! - That he's a pussy. That's terrible. Terrible!"

He then turns away, rotating his whole body to his right, walks a few steps away from lectern, throw his hands up, displays a duplicitous smile and then walks back to lectern. Shaking his head with another duplicitous smile.

While almost everyone can see Trumps behavior is performed in a completely false and mocking disapproval, from a body language teaching point of view, the moment is worth dissecting - for at most other times, with Trump or with anyone else, this behavior is not so obvious.

1:05

At the moment he understands what the woman shouted, Trump displays a very subtle, suppressed sincere smile. This smiling out of context behavior can be thought of as a form of "Duping Delight".

Please watch the video to fully appreciate this subtle nonverbal signal.

1:12

We see Mr. Trump display a classic form of a duplicitous smile. Note that the left corner of his mouth is "smiling" - up-turned (still suppressed though) while its left side is down-turned.

1:32

After turning away from the lectern, then returning, we see another example of Trump smiling out of the left side of his mouth while his right side is frowning.

Trump is trying to suppress his glee, yet he cannot. This is another variation on the phenomenon of Duping Delight.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3388: Donald Trump, Duplicitous Expressions and "politely" Removing a Protester - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Donald Trump gave us a textbook example of one type of an "Insincere Smile" while speaking in Sarasota on Saturday. In fact, for the businessman-turned-politician, this particular nonverbal is a very common one.

At 0:36 (in above video) Trump begins, "You see how diplomatic I've become? [pause] Right?"

The vast majority of the time, a unilateral smile is insincere - and this example is not one of the exceptions (Do you know how to differentiate these?).

Note how the right corner (Trump's right) of his mouth is down-turned, while his left side is vectored upward. This is a classic duplicitous (false) smile (yet not all one-sided smiles signify the same motives). This particular expression signals a disparity from what is being spoken vs. that which is thought-felt. Anytime the body language is saying one thing - and the verbal language is saying another - it's the nonverbal messages which are telling the truth.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2683: Alice Eve, Craig Ferguson, Kierkegaard and Free Will, Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This video includes the actor Alice Eve promoting the latest Star Trek movie ("Star Trek Into Darkness") last summer on "The Late Show with Craig Ferguson". Among other topics they discuss Kierkegaard and free will. Below is a discussion of one moment of Eve's body language.

At the 7:16 mark Ms. Eve briefly turns and slightly tilts her head away from Ferguson. Her eyes also gaze evanescently in the opposite direction. And while the right side her mouth attempts a smile, the side facing her host pulls laterally and downwards in a partial expression of a "Mouth of Fear". This is a form of a duplicitous smile. Like the theatrical mask with one side smiling and the other side frowning - it sends out different emotional tones (emotional dissonance). She wants to be polite and yet steer clear of the discussion regarding free will. She is cuing these two thoughts and corresponding emotions via her nonverbal signals. And while this example is put forth in a setting of comedy, Alice's dual emotions are very real. Similar body language is seen millions of times a day in the more serious settings of the board room, the court room, the exam room and the sales floor.

You only see what you look for - and you only look for what you know. What body language are you glossing over? Are you sure?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2093:
Ann Curry's Tearful Goodbye -
Matt Lauer's Classic "Tongue-in-Cheek" and Duplicitous Smile

In this video of Ann Curry's tearful goodbye, Matt Lauer gives her a kiss on her left temple at the 4:19 mark. Freeze frame at 4:20 - 4:21. There is a fantastic example of two body language tells here - a duplicitous smile as well as a classic "Tongue-in-Cheek".

Whenever a person is smiling out of one side of their mouth and frowning out of the other side, a red flag should be raised and the alarm horns should blare. This pseudo-smile/pseudo-frown is never to be trusted. Such "false smiles/frowns" share similarities with a partial emblematic slip as well as expressions of "duping delight" (Ekman). A Body Language Expert was not needed to detect the extreme awkwardness of this scene, however there are innumerable occasions when such nonverbal signals will be displayed and the emotional tone of a conversation is not nearly so evident. Look for this duplicitous body language and it will give you warning as to true intentions. This will prevent heartache, financial and time loss, major hassles ... and it may even save your life. Matt Lauer was not saddened by Ann Curry's departure - he was overjoyed.

Also at the 4:20 - 4:21 mark, Lauer also displays another betrayal of his true feelings - the "Tongue-in-cheek". It helps to view this particular moment in full-screen mode. Clustered with his other specific nonverbals seen here, his tongue-in-cheek tell indicates a self-righteous, "I just won the game" emotion. This shows without a doubt that Lauer fancies himself as a puppet master - and he had foreknowledge and very well may have orchestrated Ann Curry's departure. When different nonverbals are seen coexisting with the tongue-in-cheek (not seen here) it has different meanings. Again, not a surprise to those who have followed this event - but like most body language - it is missed in the everyday world. Don't miss it.
