Body Language Analysis No. 4281: Michael Cohen's Duplicitous Smile - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Michael Cohen has been using his shell company not only to funnel hush money to Stormy Daniels - but he's also received more than $1,000,000 from Russian oligarchs, $600,000 from AT&T, greater than $1,000,000 from Novartis, and $150,000 from Korea Aerospace Industries.

Whenever assessing someone's nonverbal behavior, one particularly crucial red flag for which you always should be on guard - is the insincerity of insincere "smile". This axiom is amplified when such feigned smiles are frequent.

Now, there are many varieties of fake smiles - however sincere smiles have much less variation. This principle is analogous to the first sentence of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina:

“Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”

One of Michael Cohen's default facial expressions is characterized in both of these images.

While it's true that sincere smiles can begin asymmetrically, as they fully form they will bloom into symmetry - projecting true joy-happiness. Cohen's "smile" however, remains one-sided.

Suppressed but sincere smiles can also sometimes be dampened on one-side - but once again, efforts at quelling sincere smiles are quite difficult - and the true smile nearly always "leaks"/pushes through.

It's profoundly important to bear in mind that the subjects, events, discussions, ideas, etc. which engender your smiling - may be very different than those of a person with nefarious motives.

Medical etiologies for lopsided smiles must also be considered (e.g., residual facial nerve palsies [such as Bell's Palsy], stroke, old injury, surgical complications, etc.) - none of which applies in Cohen's case.

To nuance this Michael Cohen's expression even further - one side of his mouth (typically his left) is contracted upward - while the other mouth corner is turned down (most often his right). Depending on the other nonverbal signals with which this is clustered, this mouth configuration - at best - indicates superficial sarcasm - yet the vast majority of times it's deeply duplicitous.

SUMMARY: The next time you encounter this insincere "smile" - with one corner of the mouth turned up and the opposite side is turned down - protect your flank! You're probably about to get skinned. Careful observation will likely yield other signals of duplicity. You can be sure that what they're saying is the complete opposite vs. what they're thinking-feeling.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3633: David Duke's Duplicity & The US Senate - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

David Duke is an "American white nationalist, antisemitic conspiracy theorist, Holocaust denier, politician, and former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan"(Wikipedia). On Friday, 22 July 2016, Duke announced he is running for the republican nomination for the US Senate for the State of Louisiana.

The video above is Duke's YouTube announcement. There are several significant nonverbal signals in this ad, however one in particular stands out and is discussed below.

The above video ad of David Duke's ends with this expression (which appears on the video from 2:22 - 2:25). Note how the right side his mouth is down-turned in what many would label a slight frown (yet it's not), while his left side is up-turned in an attempt at a "social smile". This mouth configuration is in no way indicative of a sincere smile. This "smiling out of one side of the mouth while frowning out of the other" (aka a "Twisted Smile") is highly characteristic of duplicity and deceit and thus a profoundly valuable red flag.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3462: Donald Trump calls Ted Cruz a "Pussy" - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTO)

On Monday night, after mentioning that Sen. Ted Cruz had hesitated regarding a question on the use of waterboarding for prisoners of war,  GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump called Ted Cruz a “pussy”.

Trump used this highly derogatory and misogynist term while echoing a supporter who shouted the slang during a rally the night before the New Hampshire Primary. He immediately stopped his speech, pointed [index finger, palm down] toward the woman and said,

"She just said a terrible thing. You know what she said? Shout it out, because I don’t want to s- [woman in the audience again, yells 'Pussy!', Donald Trump laughs]... Okay. You're not allowed to say - I never expect to hear that from you again. She said - I never expect to hear that from you again! - That he's a pussy. That's terrible. Terrible!"

He then turns away, rotating his whole body to his right, walks a few steps away from lectern, throw his hands up, displays a duplicitous smile and then walks back to lectern. Shaking his head with another duplicitous smile.

While almost everyone can see Trumps behavior is performed in a completely false and mocking disapproval, from a body language teaching point of view, the moment is worth dissecting - for at most other times, with Trump or with anyone else, this behavior is not so obvious.

At the moment he understands what the woman shouted, Trump displays a very subtle, suppressed sincere smile. This smiling out of context behavior can be thought of as a form of "Duping Delight".

Please watch the video to fully appreciate this subtle nonverbal signal.

We see Mr. Trump display a classic form of a duplicitous smile. Note that the left corner of his mouth is "smiling" - up-turned (still suppressed though) while its left side is down-turned.

1:32

After turning away from the lectern, then returning, we see another example of Trump smiling out of the left side of his mouth while his right side is frowning.

Trump is trying to suppress his glee, yet he cannot. This is another variation on the phenomenon of Duping Delight.
