Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3305: Weatherman Liam Dutton nails pronouncing Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch - Body Language Tell (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

How many people can pronounce "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch" properly? .... And how could you tell if they got it wrong?

In this recently viral video, Meteorologist Liam Dutton nails a most difficult pronunciation of a Welsh village - and to the observant among us - we can also see an interesting and valuable body language display.

Just as the weatherman says the last syllable of the lengthy town, you can see Mr. Dutton elevate subtly (0:14 second mark) and once again with greater height during 0:15 (as he says, " ... temperature got to 21 Celsius ..."). Although we can't see them directly, we know he's elevating up on his toes. This nonverbal display is often seen during times of anxiety - yet most of the time this is of a positive variety, e.g. with excitement, pride, joy, optimism, etc. Dutton is very pleased with himself that he pulled this off - and of course he doesn't say so with words - yet his body language tells us he's proud.

This act of this toe elevation is subconsciously initiated and is one example of an "energy bleeder" which helps to dampen the expression of other nonverbal signals which he may not want to display.

What other subtle nonverbal tells us Liam Dutton is happy with his performance?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3304: Jeb Bush on Stephen Colbert's Late Show Premier - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last night Jeb Bush was a guest on Stephen Colbert's premier of the Late Show. When Colbert tried to help him "prepare" for the upcoming Republican debate, Stephen changed it up a bit wherein Gov. Bush had to read off a teleprompter with "Trumpier" comedic answers (à la Donald Trump). When Bush heard this game-change he responded with, "Oh, this could be dangerous ..."

Immediately after saying "dangerous" during 1:04 - 1:05, Jeb displays what is known as a "Jaw Confessional". This very telling and under-appreciated nonverbal signal is brief. In this example it lasts slightly less than a second and thus here is classified as a "near-microexpression" (although jaw confessionals can be even shorter in duration - and therefore a classic microexpression).

A jaw confessional is a short-lived and subconsciously initiated sideways (lateral) movement of the jaw which accompanies the emotion of embarrassment. Here his embarrassment is not for something he did - but for an anticipated action. Therefore in this scenario, Mr. Bush's verbal and nonverbal messages are highly congruent - and thus very sincere.

Yet in many day-to-day settings you may very well see this body language displayed with confident (contradicting) verbals - and in such a scenario it would indicate deception. Often the jaw confessional is seen with no accompanying verbal language at all. It's profoundly important to note, whenever the verbal and the nonverbal messages are disparate - it's the nonverbal which is always telling the truth.

Take heed though - for significantly slower and longer lateral duration jaw movements have a completely different meaning (What do these indicate and can what other accompanying nonverbals help to differentiate it?).

Of course another very common signal of embarrassment and more recognizable by most people seen in this moment is Jeb Bush Blushing.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3303: Gorilla watching pics of other gorillas on Man's Phone at Zoo - Body Orientation, Personal Space and Emotional Comfort (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This is a very intriguing and entertaining video uploaded to YouTube two days ago. In it we can see a man at the Louisville Zoo showing pictures of other gorillas to a live gorilla (Jelani). It would have been better, of course, to have seen the initial encounter between man and ape and how it progressed. And although this is a cross-species interaction, we can certainly glean some valuable nonverbal lessons very applicable in human-to-human communication.

Initially (at least with respect to this edited video) Jelani keeps his body oriented roughly perpendicular to the man showing him the pics.

If we had been there and seen this encounter a few moments earlier, their faces, torsos, hips and probably even their feet - would have most likely been more parallel (pointing more directly at each other - roughly mirror images).

As the Jelani's emotional comfort increases, he orients his body in a more relaxed manner - getting closer (further into the man's personals space [intimate space] and oriented perpendicular to the man).

As his emotional comfort increase still further, Jelani leans his torso as well as his head-neck unit towards the man. The man of course is doing the same thing - they are mirroring each other. Again, who initiated this? - It would be valuable to know. With respect to human behavior, this touching of the heads and shoulders (of course this is not quite occurring here because of the thick glass) during similar moments will amplify any rapport already established (thus it's one example of what is known as a "Rapport Amplifier").

It's of profound importance that at least some modestly significant level of rapport must have existed prior to this moment - otherwise if one person attempts such nonverbal behavior it will be interpreted as a form of aggression or at the very least "false intimacy" (asymmetrical intimacy) by most everyone (and certainly animals).

Head-neck tilting (particularly toward each other during a shared experience) indicates a level of friendly, emotional-vulnerability (e.g., "I'm don't feel threatened by you.", "I trust you", "I feel comfortable with you", "I'm letting you into my world."). And while the thick glass certainly facilitates feelings of safety and protection for both primates, such head-neck tilting towards another never occurs when a person/animal feels threatened.

If you watch Jelani's left hand/arm, he appears to gesture several times. Some people have interpreted this movement (including a woman heard describing this to another onlooker) as a signal for the man to advance to the next photo. This may indeed be true, however we would need to see a longer duration sample (with a better view) as well as other examples of Jelani's behavior to be sure.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3302: Hillary Clinton, the Recent MSNBC Interview, Low Likability and Diminished Trustworthiness (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Hillary Clinton recently gave an interview with Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC. It was just her third national interview since announcing her candidacy for President.

Mrs. Clinton has a lifetime of political experience. And despite the fact she didn't win the democratic nomination for President in 2008, Hillary has had a lot of victories. Much like a successful attorney, physician, teaching or corporate professional, etc. - very often once a person has fairly high level of political success, their behavior up to that point becomes validating - even thought a fair amount of is not necessarily good. Thus it also becomes significantly solidified and difficult to change (e.g., What will get me further is just more of what got me to this level - right? Wrong.).

With respect to increasing her chances of winning the Oval Office - this of course doesn't mean that Mrs. Clinton needs to change everything, but she does very much fall into this success-habit-validation trap. We all do it to some degree. This phenomenon may prevent us from improving - and even seeing our weaknesses. Moreover when you're high in any given food-chain, your subordinates become very hesitant in speaking truth to power - and like you - they largely won't even see these faults.

It's no secret that Mrs. Clinton has problems with her likability and trustworthiness. She's hit a plateau here and has even experienced declines.

One (of many) nonverbal faux pas that Hillary (and many others) commits is opening their eyelids too widely during conversation, interviews and speeches. It's extremely crucial to note that she displays this illustrator chronically. Nearly every time she's trying to emphasize an issue - Mrs. Clinton's eyes open wide. This is NOT natural and leaves people emotionally uncomfortable. It's somewhat analogous to, when with the written language - a person places multiple exclamation marks at the end of a sentence. They do so when they feel their words lack sincerity. Simultaneous with the widely opened eyes, we also see elevated eyebrows and forehead musculature (the entire width of forehead).

Note: we all make this same expression from time to time, but it's the chronic nature here that is important.

The over-use of this eyelid-eyebrow-forehead nonverbal cluster backfires - and will be interpreted as patronizing, condescending and even arrogant. While certainly not the only influencing factor, Mrs. Clinton must absolutely stop this if she is to improve her likability and perception of honesty with the electorate. No healthy person wants to feel as if someone is talking-down to them. Mrs. Clinton or any politician/"leader" need to be extremely aware of when they're sending such signals - and Hillary is not.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3301: Sarah Palin re: Bush vs. Trump regarding speaking Spanish - "When you're here, let's Speak American!" - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Recently Sarah Palin was asked about Donald Trump's condemnation of Jeb Bush's use of Spanish - as well as Governor Bush's response. What follows is an analysis of two key moments of Gov. Palin's nonverbal behavior which tell us her true emotions on this issue.

Jake Tapper asks Sarah Palin, "Donald Trump said this week that, 'Jeb Bush should speak English and not Spanish, ah, when he's campaigning in the U.S.' Ah, Jeb Bush's response was that Trump doesn't value Tolerance. What do you make of that debate?"

Gov. Palin answers, "I, I don't with ya, you know, choosing to speak, ah, English or Spanish in a, a conversation - what that would have to do with, ah, somebody opposing it with tolerance or not, um ...."

In this moment (captured above at 0:13), as the former V.P. Candidate says, "I, I don't..." - she displays a great example of a microexpression of contempt.

Later in this same sentence (0:23) as she says, "... with tolerance ...", Mrs. Palin displays a less dramatic yet still highly characteristic display of disgust.

Disgust and Contempt are similar and very significant emotions. In most contexts these are considered negative. Contempt however is considered by many to be a more damaging emotion and it can only be directed at person or group of people - while we may feel disgust at people or nonliving objects

In summary, although Sarah Palin praises Jeb Bush verbally, her nonverbal cues tells us her true feelings - that she feels both contempt and disgust for Mr. Bush and his bilingual practice. What other body language behaviors of Mrs. Palin's tell us her true emotions towards immigrants?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3300: Vladimir Putin, Narcissism and Body Language (PHOTOS)

Vladimir Putin met with Dmitry Medvedev a few days ago at Putin's summer residence near Sochi. It is reported they discussed the strategics of Russia maintaining and increasing its dominance in the Arctic.

The Russian President never passes up an opportunity for a photo session which casts him in good light - yet can you name a politician who doesn't? Putin often takes it further though - for many of these photos also show him in particularly masculine, adventurous and athletic scenarios. He is shown playing hockey, riding in submarines, riding horses bare-chested, hunting tigers, etc. And although many poke fun at him the World over for this, he continues to orchestrate these photo opportunities.

A detail which escapes most people however - are the nonverbal messages that these images project. In the first image Vladimir's arms and legs are spread wide. Of course a person can't operate this particular weight-lifting apparatus without moving their arms and legs in such a manner. Yet it was this image the Kremlin chose to release. The same is true with the second photo - Mr. Putin is swimming the butterfly, and despite its delicate name it's probably the most difficult stroke. It also carries significant machismo - with arms spread to their maximum wingspan.

Whether posed, spontaneous or somewhere in between - Vladimir Putin tends to take up more room than most men 5'7" (1.70 meters). But most men don't lead Russia.

A person who chronically defaults with arms and legs positioned further from mid-line, who tends to take up more room - also has a strong predilection towards Narcissistic Personality Disorder. What are some other body language signals associated with Narcissism?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3299: Kim Davis, Contempt-of-Court, Same-Sex Marriages and Body Language (PHOTOS)

Yesterday Kim Davis was jailed for contempt of court. As the Rowan County, Kentucky Clerk - she's an elected government official. One of her duties is to issue marriage licenses. On 26 June 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court (Obergefell v. Hodges) legalized same-sex marriage throughout the country - yet Ms. Davis refused to issue marriage licenses. She then filed an emergency application with the Supreme Court seeking to put the court's order on hold while she sought an appeal. After the Supreme Court denied her application, Ms. Davis continued to deny the marriage licenses. When asked under whose authority she was acting, she responded, "Under God's authority".

The above image of Kim Davis is instructive from a body language point-of-view - particularly because she's projecting emotional dissonance.

Davis's face is primarily signaling disgust. She also has a component of contempt - and although these two emotions are related, her contempt is secondary. Note the subtleties of her mid-facial tension - particularly below the nose and above her upper lip. Her nostrils are also flared. What is the third emotion she is feeling? What does the configuration of her mouth tell you?

Don't interpret her interlaced fingers in isolation - rather look at the whole person and the whole moment. In this context, her fingers tell us she is frustrated and defensive. Tighter variations of this hand nonverbal indicate an element of anger. This also tells us that she feels she is the alpha personality in the room. She believes everyone else present is beta to her alpha.

Another valuable component to this nonverbal cluster is Ms. Davis's use of the chair as a MAP surrogate (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier). Despite the fact that there is a counter between herself and others with whom she's disagreeing - she still feels the need for another barrier to insulate and protect her.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3298: Aylan Kurdi, a three year-old Syrian refugee drowns and the image of his body moves the World - a Body Language Empathy Self-Assessment

This is an image of a joyful three year-old, Aylan Kurdi (left) and his five year-old brother Galip. As refugees, escaping the wars in Syria along with their parents, they were fleeing to Europe. These two precious little boys and their mother (Rehan) drowned off the coast of Turkey. Only their father survived. An image of Aylan's body - washed up on a beach has been seen the World over. That photo - and more specifically the powerful emotions it has evoked, has moved many, including European leaders, to action. The picture is deliberately not included here - yet, if you've not done so already, give some thought to googling the photo and viewing it in private.

What did you feel when you first viewed the image Aylan's body? It may strike you as odd, yet some people did not feel very much emotion. Those with high empathy quotients however will manifest most or all of the following nonverbal changes.

Many people upon seeing such an image immediately bring their hands up to their face and cover their:
  • mouth,
  • mouth and nose or
  • mouth, nose, cheeks and with fingers usually covering parts of their eyes
Beneath your hands your mouth is usually opened - with tightened lips covering your teeth. Your eyes will also open widely. This nonverbal cluster is indicative of shock-surprise with a high empathy quotient.

The above emotional moment virtually always transitions fairly rapidly to that of grief-sadness - which is nonverbally manifested by an elevated central forehead contraction (elevated CFC) along with a mouth of sadness with its characteristic down-turned corners - while at the same time the cheeks are pulled upwards. The upper eyelids droop significantly and the lower eyelids partially close too. Grief-Sadness is typically the longest lasting emotion.

You may initially feel nausea along with your grief and may clench your jaw as your tongue bunches-up and contract backwards.

Sometimes a classic of partial mouth of fear expression will manifest, although this is typically brief and replaced my grief-sadness.

Your head-neck-torso complex will typically retract away from the computer/T.V. screen. You may even step backwards or pull your chair in the opposite direction. Your legs and feet will often retract together. The knees and the ankles will bend. Your arms will typically cross over your chest with the hands and fingers contracting/clenching as the psyche goes into a protective mode. The hands will very often move over the heart. Simultaneous with the hands-over-heart dynamic - the tears will often begin to flow. Along with extreme grief, this cluster-complex is a form of emotionally holding the little Alyan from a distance. A part of us (many of us) instinctively want to comfort him and protect him even though he has passed. For with those of higher empathy at this moment, the miles disappear - as well as the fact that we've never seen or heard of this innocent little boy before.

My deepest condolences to Aylan's and Galip's Father and Rehan's husband - Abdullah Kurdi, their family and loved-ones.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3297: 70th Anniversary of the End of World War II - Height, Intimidation and Surrender on the Mighty Mo' (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Most people are intuitively aware that height often confers a significant advantage - yet some would be surprised to discover the specifics. Taller individuals, particularly men, get hired easier, win elections more often, get promoted more readily, have higher incomes and even longer life-spans. Intriguingly we interrupt taller people less frequently. Taller men also enjoy a significant advantage in the realm of romance.

While there is nothing a person can do to increase their absolute height - factors such as posture, standing while others are sitting (although this must be strategic and only in select scenarios), stages/podiums, camera angles and high/higher heels (even shoe lifts with men) artificially lend significant height.

Seventy years ago today, 2 September 1945, on the deck of "The Mighty Mo' " - World War II came to an end with the Japanese surrender. It was the duty of James L. Starnes, the navigator on the U.S.S. Missouri, to ensure the success of the short but highly choreographed ceremony.

A little known nonverbal nugget of history: Lieutenant Commander Starnes picked out eight seamen, all over 6 feet tall to form a very deliberate gauntlet of intimation in an effort to project the military superiority of the Allies as the Japanese delegation came on board.

After just 23 minutes it was all over. General Douglas MacArthur then spoke the last words of WWII, "These proceedings are closed" - and humanity's bloodiest war came to an end.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3295: Jim Harbaugh, Michigan Football and Predicting Violent Behavior (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The University of Michigan made a mistake in hiring Jim Harbaugh. However this judgement is not based on his ability to coach football.

It's not surprising that during his first Michigan Media day as a head coach, Harbaugh would be a bit nervous (an excerpt included in the above video). Yet he's been in such spotlights before many times. Harbaugh was of course a starting quarterback for Michigan as well as the Chicago bears. Later he became head coach for the University of San Diego and then Stanford. In the NFL he coached the San Francisco 49ers all the way to Super Bowl XLVII.

And it's no secret that some of Harbaugh's previous players have complained about his temper - while other's have come to his defense. From a strictly nonverbal perspective, Harbaugh displays several warning signals of poor impulse control - one of which is discussed here.

When a person chronically displays widely open eyelids (barring a medical condition such as thyroid eye disease [Graves' disease], injury, botched surgery, side effects from Botox injections, etc.) - there will virtually always be accompanying behavioral problems. Jim Harbaugh's eyelids are indeed chronically opened very widely - and very significantly, in settings of where they are emotionally out of context. This disparity is a huge red flag. Although there are other associated disorders, very often this chronic "white and wide" expression indicates an impulse control disorder. There is a very high likelihood Jim Harbaugh will lose his temper in a highly significant manner. It could be tomorrow, it may be next month or five years from now. Most likely this will occur in preparation for a big game or in the midst of Michigan having a particularly bad losing season.

Jim Harbaugh was not well vetted psychologically/behaviorally. Michigan's desire to recapture the glory of their past will come back to bite them.

Note: This is not the only nonverbal signal of impulse control disorder and there are people with this condition who do not exhibit this body language sign. Also, as stated above, this chronic widely open eyelid configuration can also be indicative of other behavioral disorders.
