Body Language Analysis No. 4382: Why is Donald Trump Leaning Forward? - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

In the past several days, it's been reported that Donald Trump has been "standing weird". Although the President's leaning-forward posture has been displayed in the past, recently this stance has been used more consistently. Why? What are the body language ramifications?

Donald Trump is standing with this posture - primarily because he has specially crafted, 'lift shoes'. His added 2.5 - 3.5 inch heel-height causes him to lean forward. This configuration is accentuated by his obesity.

Trump is quite self-conscious about his height. President Trump's claimed height is 6'3" - yet, this is demonstrably false. In the above photo, taken on the morning of his inauguration, Trump is clearly approximately 0.5 inch shorter than President Obama (Obama's feet are further apart, which effectively lowers his height a bit, relative to Trump).

It's notable that Ronny Jackson, M.D. - Trump's White House physician for the first 15 months of his administration - also served the same role for Barack Obama. President Obama's height, per Jackson's medical reports, was listed at 6'1".

Both Trump and Obama have been routinely photographed standing next to many athletes - thus, we can use these others' registered height's as cross-checks. Here's an image of Trump standing next to Tiger Woods (presumably, both men are wearing golf shoes). Woods' reported height is 6'1".

Here's another photo Donald Trump leaning forward during a political rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin on 27 April 2019. Take note of how his arms hang with a forward angle, relative to his torso, rather than along side of his body.

Trump was leaning forward in this same style while greeting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during his visit to the White House on 11 October 2017.

Notice also the knee-wrinkle on each man's pants. Trudeau is listed as 6'2", but his knee-wrinkle is much higher than Trump's (by approximately 6-8 inches). While there exists slight variations of extremity proportions from person-to-person, Trump's knee-wrinkle corresponds to someone of considerably shorter stature.


SUMMARY: Donald Trump's forward-leaning posture is caused by his use of lift-shoes. This odd stature is further exacerbated by his obesity.

Such forward-leaning posture has the secondary body language effect of encroaching into others' personal space (intimate space) during greetings and other interactions. In addition to him being physically closer, we also feel emotionally uncomfortable whenever we think something/someone may fall over onto us.

This narcissistic stance amplifies any similar nonverbal behavior already present - e.g., pulling/yanking-style handshakes, the false intimacy of patting others' shoulders, touching others' backs/falsely guiding, feigned embracing, etc.

Thus, while Donald Trump uses shoe lifts because he feels self-conscious about his height, they have the secondary body language effect of physical intimidation.

Body Language Analysis No. 4270: Donald Trump Brushes Dandruff off Emmanuel Macron - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Donald Trump is hosting Emmanuel Macron in the first State visit of the American's President's Administration. On Tuesday, while with his French counterpart, President Trump displayed multiple nonverbal faux pas - one of which is analyzed here.

Beginning at 0:00, President Trump says, "Mr. President, they're all saying what a great relationship we have and they're actually correct, it's not fake news - finally it's not fake news - so, it's a great honor - great honor that you're here. But we do have a very special relationship - in fact, I'll get that little piece of dandruff off [mumble, laugh] little piece - We have to make him perfect. He is perfect. So it is really, ah - it is really great to be with you and you are a special friend. Thank you. Thank you."

During 0:16 - 0:18, President Trump brushes an alleged piece of dandruff off of Macon's left lapel - three times with his right index finger - and then his with the rest of his hand off of his left shoulder - and follows it up with a touch on Macron's left elbow (0:20).

This short display is rife with body language blunders - and messages.

• The act of brushing dandruff, lint, dirt, etc. off another person is called "grooming" - and the vast majority of the time, such an act between adults (non-relatives) signals affection and/or physical attraction. This is particularly true when this violation of personal/intimate space is performed without permission - which is exactly what Trump did here.

Yet, it's not that simple ...

• It's highly doubtfully there was dandruff on Macron. Trump most likely fabricated this flaw in order to rationalize violating the French President's personal/intimate space.

• If there truly was dandruff on Macron's lapel, why call attention to it? Even if you were alone with another person - doing so would very often be ill-advised. And this act is particularly true - with a Head of State - in the Oval Office - in front of reporters - on live television.

So why did President Trump do this?

• To verbally embarrass Macron
• To physically violate Macron's personal space/intimate space
• To exert dominance over him
• It's a symptom of Narcissistic Personality Disorder

But most importantly:

• This violation of Emmanuel Macron's personal/intimate space, in large measure, is yet another manifestation of Donald Trump's Impulse Control Disorder. Although in this example it's not sexually-motivated, this behavior is very similar to what then Candidate Trump exemplified when, captured on the Access Hollywood tape, he said:

"I better use some Tic Tacs just in case I start kissing her. You know I'm automatically attracted to beautiful—I just start kissing them. It's like a magnet. Just kiss. I don't even wait. And when you're a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab 'em by the pussy. You can do anything."


Summary: While such a public display of grooming is typically a sign of affection and/or sexual attraction - whether the dandruff was fictitious or real, Donald Trump's grooming of Emmanuel Macron was motivated by Trump's desire to embarrass, dominate, and belittle him. The American feels threatened by the French leader. It's also indicative of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Although some people may find Trump's action amusing, it's of profound importance - for this violation of Macron's personal/intimate space is one more glaring symptom of Trump's impulse control disorder.

Body Language Analysis No. 3399 (REPOSTING): Donald Trump, a Bald Eagle, and Fear - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Multiple requests for a re-posting of this article (from 2015) have been made in the last 24 hours. It's included here in its entirety (with updated cross-reference links at the end of the article).

The latest Donald Trump video is obviously not to his liking - and understandably so. Although far from Daniel Day-Lewis, the businessman-turned-politician normally has a somewhat better control of his facial expressions compared with most candidates. This video, however, shows us a very candid exception.

In August 2015, when the Republican was posing with a bald eagle (named "Uncle Sam") for a Time magazine cover, Trump demonstrated several key, but non-flattering nonverbal faux pas.

In this split second, we can see Trump invading the personal (intimate) space of Uncle Sam. Yet the raptor, it seems, is much quicker than the republican.




Animals, of course, are no different than people when it comes to proxemic principles - if they don't know you well AND if you don't share a good rapport - they will NOT welcome you into their intimate space.

This morning during a phone interview on "Fox & Friends", Steve Doocy asked Mr. Trump, "Were you a little frightened by that bird?". Trump replied, "No, not really."

Note the expression on Mr. Trump - particularly his mouth. His sudden, tightening and lateral vectoring (with down-turned corners) of his mouth is a classic "mouth of fear".

A split second later we see Trump's "fear mouth" become even more extreme.










Body Language take-home points:

1. Only enter the personal/intimate space of another if:
    A. They know you, AND
    B.  You have good mutual-rapport

2. Although there are certainly human, cultural variations with regards to personal space (proxemics)
    tolerances, it is a deeply ingrained and highly physiologic phenomenon which is exhibited
    cross-species.

3. Donald Trump Lied. He was indeed quite frightened by Uncle Sam the Bald Eagle.

Body Language Analysis No. 4163: Donald Trump and Xi Jinping - (Relatively) Beta and Alpha - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

In April 2017, President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping met at Mar-a-Lago.

In the image above, Trump is sitting - in what for him - is a very rare configuration. His right leg is crossing over his left knee/distal thigh in a "European Style". Although we can't see his right foot - from the angle of his leg, we know it's probably pointing at the Chinese President. In this context, such a foot angle projects respect and/or deference.

Note that President Xi has both feet flat on the floor. This body language transmits his greater levels of confidence and strength. The angle of his legs are also not excessively splayed. In addition, although his head/face are turned toward President Trump, President Xi's torso, hips, legs - and probably his feet - are pointed straight forward. This conveys relatively less respect of Xi toward Trump.

President Xi also is seated in his own chair - which gives him a significant advantage. The Chinese leader's personal space is protected - whereas President Trump is seated in a less protected - and more "public" space.

Contrast Trump's meeting with Xi vs. this second image from a 60 minutes interview (September 2015). Note how then-candidate Trump is sitting with legs very widely spread in an extreme example of a "Seated Crotch Display" (colloquially known as "Manspreading"). He's also leaning forward with his torso - and with his hands in a "Low Steeple" (Conventional Low Steeple). This is President Trump's primary default seated display - it's overly-dominant, aggressive, and not recommended.

Summary: President Trump's nonverbal behavior in the first image (with President Xi Jinping), although not beta in an absolute sense - is relatively beta when placed in dynamic context with Xi's alpha body language. Although he was on his home turf, Trump committed the tactical error of not planning ahead by not controlling the physical space of the meeting. In this moment, Xi is projecting more power and less respect toward Trump. Most notably, President Trump's deviation from his normal hyper-alpha seating position demonstrates Trump was considerably off his game with President Xi.

Body Language Analysis No. 4144: Donald Trump Touching Mike Pence on the Knee in the Oval Office - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

President Trump met with the leaders from both parties in both Chambers of Congress today - in an effort to avert a government shutdown. Along with Vice President Pence - Senators Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer - as well as Representatives Paul Ryan and Nancy Pelosi in the Oval Office. Secretary of Defense, Jim Mattis was also present. Later in the day, the House and the Senate voted to keep the Federal government running for another two weeks.

During the 1:04 mark in the above video, President Trump touches/pats Vice President Trump on his left lower thigh and knee.

In the vast majority of cultures on Earth, including the United States, outside the context of:

• Sports
• Acting
• Medical Examinations
• Intimate Relationships

Whenever a man touches another man on the leg, particularly the thigh, the causes and/or motivations include:

• Power Display/Intimidation Tactic
• Sexual
• Dis-inhibition arising from the use of Drugs or Alcohol
• Central Nervous System disorders, e.g., Frontotemporal Dementia
• Autism Spectrum Disorder

The President is not gay and he's also not recognized as being on the Autism spectrum. Of the three remaining causes, statistically, the most probable cause one man would violate another man's personal (intimate space) with the touching of their thigh/knee - particularly in so public a manner - would as a power/dominance display - with the intent to intimidate and "remind" them - and to others watching, who is boss.

And yet, with the recent social and political changes associated with the Me Too movement - as well as the past accusations of sexual misconduct made against him, there remains one other potential explanation: If a person anticipated they were about to be accused of a similar inappropriate physical contact, they may plan to touch another person in that same manner - and doing so publicly - thereby creating the premise for a defense, such as, "See, I touch everyone's leg like that" or "I always do that".

Summary: The most likely explanation for Trump touching Pence on the thigh-knee - is that he's displaying dominance in a moment of dis-inhibition. That begs the question: Why is he dis-inhibited?

Body Language Analysis No. 3628 (REPOSTING): Donald & Melania Trump's interview with Matt Lauer Prior to Her Speech at Republican Convention - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In the light of Matt Lauer's recent firing and with the news of his long-standing behavior recently made public, multiple requests for the re-posting of this article (from 2016) have been made in the last several days. It's included here in its entirety (with updated cross-reference links at the end of the article).

Last night at the Republican Convention did Melania Trump know she was reading a speech which, in part, was plagiarized from Michelle Obama's speech at the 2008 Democratic Convention? Did she write the speech or did she have help? If so, was that a little help or was it a considerable amount?

What follows is a partial body language analysis of Melania Trump and Donald Trump in an interview with Matt Lauer yesterday morning.

At 0:59 in the above video MATT LAUER continues: One part of that campaign ends in that hall tonight - another part begins. Your wife is going to get to speak to the delegates ...

DONALD TRUMP: Right.

MATT LAUER: About you. Has she gone over the speech with you? Did you practice it on the plane?

MELANIA TRUMP: I read once over it, and that's all - because I wrote it and ah, li- [stutter], with a little help - as possible soooooo ....

MATT LAUER: Are you nervous? 

MELANIA TRUMP: No-

MATT LAUER [over-talking]: It would be okay to be nervous.

MELANIA TRUMP: I'm excited.

MATT LAUER: Yeah?

MELANIA TRUMP: Yeah. It's exciting night.

MATT LAUER: What do you want to tell the delegates, Mrs. Trump, about your husband, that they haven't learned in the last year?

MELANIA TRUMP: Well I will tell it in the speech - and, ahhh, he's ah, an amazing -

DONALD TRUMP: Yeah

MATT LAUER: Yeah, she looks good, she's learned a lot from you. That was really good. Go ahead, continue.

MELANIA TRUMP [over-talking]: Soooo, he's an amazing guy, and ah, he really wants to bring ah, America to the next level.

Matt Lauer touching Melania Trump on the arm (during 1:10 as he says, "... practice ...) is an invasion of her personal (intimate space) and is one signal of false affection. It also is highly consistent with narcissism.

Note that on multiple occasions, Lauer refers to Mrs. Trump as if she wasn't there - in the third person:

"... Your wife is going to get to speak to the delegates ..."

"... Has she gone over the speech with you?"

"... Yeah, she looks good ..."

"... she's learned a lot from you ..."

This last example is also particularly patronizing.

Notice too, Lauer interrupts Mrs. Trump on multiple occasions.

Now flash back to the very beginning of Lauer's interview - he's leaning on the back of a seat. While this may appear to be an attempt at being casual - this dynamic is Lauer's baseline behavior of trying to assert dominance when it's out-of-context.

Focusing on Melania, during 1:14, she shrugs her left shoulder and rotates her torso toward Donald as she says, "... that's all  ..."

A shoulder shrug indicates, "I don't care"/"What does it matter?", "I don't know",  or "What could I do?/What choice did I have?" 

During 1:15 as she says, "... because I wrote it and ...", Melania looks to her right, blinks, and looks slightly down. Looking in this quadrant in right-hand dominant individuals is very often correlated with emotional overtones of sadness, regret and other forms of emotional discomfort. For her to look in this direction (and AWAY from Lauer) the instant she says "... I ...", strongly implies deception.

Just as she says, "... and ah, li- [stutter], with ...", Melania looks down to her left. Gaze in this direction in most right-handed people is very often associated with "internal dialog" (e.g., here deciding how to phrase an answer).

Importantly, Melania is also stuttering and again, she's looking away from Lauer.

Also of profound significance here is Donald Trump's body language. The instant after Melania says, "... because I wrote it ..." - HE TURNS AWAY. Donald Trump knew his wife was lying. Note he keeps his same facial expression - but we see a change manifested elsewhere on his body. This is an excellent example of what in nonverbal parlance is termed "Leakage".

As Melania says, "... with as little help as possible soooooo ....", both the pitch and volume of her voice increase, she leans forward with her head, neck, and torso (a "Neck Stretch"), with a Self-Righteous Head Wiggle display, her eyebrows elevate and her forehead contracts across its entire width and also elevates. In addition, she ends her sentence with the stretched-out word, "... soooooo ...". This nonverbal-verbal-paralanguage cluster is highly consistent with deception. She is emotionally uncomfortable talking about her upcoming speech and wants Lauer to change the subject.

Summary: While this analysis cannot directly discern any intent of plagiarism on her part (or her speech writer's), Melania Trump did lie when she said she had "... as little help as possible ..." writing her speech - and Donald Trump knew she was lying.

Matt Lauer's verbal, nonverbal, and paralanguage behavior are not only rude - these are classic manifestations of narcissism, invasion of personal (intimate) space/false affection, and misogyny.

Body Language Analysis No. 4138: Matt Lauer, Intimidation, and Aggression - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Anyone who has even casually observed Matt Lauer's behavior over the past twenty years should in no way be surprised by some of his female colleague's allegations of "inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace".

Examine carefully each of these five photographs.
 
Anne Hathaway was on the Today Show in 2012 promoting her then recent film,  Les Miserables (for which she would go on to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress). Lauer initiated the interview bringing up the subject of an extremely embarrassing wardrobe malfunction. Moreover, he did so in a sexual manner, saying, "seen a lot of you lately".

But he didn't stop there, Lauer went on to say, "Let’s just get it out of the way. You had a little wardrobe malfunction the other night. What’s the lesson learned from something like that?" One has difficulty imagining how he could he possibly get any more patronizing.

Note the manner in which Lauer is sitting - with his legs crossed (European style). Sitting this close to any guest - regardless of their gender is out of context behavior for an interview. If space was limited - and he had to be this close - he should not have crossed his legs. And if he still felt the need to cross them in such close quarters, he should have pointed his leg/foot away from Anne Hathaway - yet he invades her space.

He does the same with most all of his guests - particularly the women. Included here are other examples of this same behavior with Jennifer Lopez and Katie Holmes.

Lauer goes out of his way to encroach on each woman's personal space - more specifically, their intimate space. With the ample area available in a major television studio - and when this behavior is of a chronic nature - it strongly signals the presence of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (however this is only one of many narcissist behaviors).

Narcissists routinely enter into other's personal/intimate space in order to intimidate and exert dominance.

Moreover, this and similar nonverbal signs can carry the additional significance of sexual displays and sexual intimidation.

But note how Lauer sits when interviewing Donald Trump. He points his torso, legs, and feet away from the President (at an angle of about 80˚ - 90)˚- and in so doing affords his guest much more space.

The fact that Trump is an even greater narcissist than Lauer is not lost on us, however. The President routinely sits (regardless of the gender of his interviewer) in an extreme example of a "Seated crotch display" (colloquially known as "Manspreading"). He also, with high frequency, sits forward in his chair (with his butt away from the back of the chair) - in addition to leaning forward with his torso. This is an example of another hyper-alpha sitting posture. The President's status and his body language intimidates Lauer - making the hunter momentarily the hunted.

In this last image of Lauer interviewing Pete Carroll, the Seattle Seahawk's coach is sitting with his legs essentially parallel. Lauer again returns to his narcissist default position. While Carroll is not, in an absolute sense, in any way beta in this moment - he becomes a relative beta because of Lauer's hyper-alpha, invasion of Carroll's personal space.

Summary: Chronic invasion of another person's personal/intimate space signals their poor emotional intelligence and is a routine behavior of narcissists. Depending on the other accompanying nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behavior - it can also be a type of a sexual overture/display and a form of sexual intimidation and harassment.

These individuals will say, "I'm just comfortable this way" (or similar) - keep in mind this is only partially true. Translated, this really means that they're more emotionally comfortable only when they're asserting dominance, behaving aggressively, sometimes sexually (out of context) - and intimidating others.

Body Language Analysis No. 4011: Anthony Scaramucci's First UK Interview - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Some say Anthony Scaramocci is simply acting under Donald Trump's instruction. Other's say that his personality has naturally become more Trump-like (by design) - or even perhaps it's his baseline personality. Which ever the reason, the new White House Communications Director needs a remedial course in body language.

The video above is Mr. Scaramocci's first interview with the BBC (with Journalist Emily Maitlis). There's a myriad of nonverbal tells in this eleven-minute video. The images below capture only those demonstrating the Communication Director's multiple personal space (intimate space) infractions.
 

1:22 - It's offensive to direct a palm towards another person, particularly in such close quarters.

1:56 - Palm-down gestures - especially so close to another person is hyper-alpha signal and universally offensive.

Note also the near-full extension of Scaramucci's arm. The further the arm is extended (elbow, shoulder, and wrist) this amplifies to the overall alpha-tone of the hand gesture.

2:11 - On multiple occasions, Mr. Scaramucci uses an index finger point - which is offensive in every culture on the planet.

2:38 - Another index finger point in intimate space. This has a wag-variation, which adds an element of a patronizing emotional tone.

2:40 - This is an example of touching a person out of context and without permission. This does not build rapport - rather it destroys it.

3:45 - More touching out of social context.

4:32 - Palm-down gesture - hyper alpha and much too close.

5:41 - More touching without permission. Emily Maitlis' mouth is configured in a thinned-lipped manner. Her nostrils are flared. She's angry - and she reflexively crosses her arms across her upper abdomen/lower chest.

5:59 - Repeated index finger pointing - universally offensive.

6:11 - Another touch - this "feels" a bit less offensive because it involves two fingers and is vertical rather than palm-down.

6:13 - Two seconds later, a repeat performance.

6:16 - This palm-finger forward gesture is hyper-aggressive, very offensive, and particularly discouraged when directed at a woman's breasts.

7:08 - More Palm-down touching.

7:33 - A double index-finger point is especially contemptuous. This is a tremendous rapport destroyer and an illustrator which is never recommended.

7:34 - Mr. Scaramucci tells Emily Maitlis she is a bit of an elitist (with a very elitist gesture)

8:11 - Right hand with an index finger point with the left hand in a tight fist. This is not how a gentleman behaves - and, crucially, it's indicative of a significant adrenaline surge. It's dramatically out of proportion to context - and is a profound warning sign.

8:14 - Ungentlemanly redux

8:53 - Yet another palm down infraction

9:02 - May I touch you? (No, you may not!)

9:06 - More is better? (NOT!)

9:16 - Mum always told you not to point.

9:37 - Especially not with both hands ...

11:00 - Additional touching without permission (Ms. Maitlis' mid-back)

11:02 - One last index finger point in intimate space


Summary: Anthony Scaramucci's multiple violations of Emily Maitlis' personal and intimate space is certainly not diplomatic - nor is it consistent with even a rudimentary understanding of body language (particularly ironic given he is the White House Communications Director). This behavior is universally offensive, rapport destroying, and narcissistic.
