Body Language Analysis No. 4352: Donald Trump, Mohammed bin Salman, and Journalist Jamal Khashoggi - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

On 2 October 2018, journalist Jamal Khashoggi walked into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and he never walked out alive. He traveled there to obtain a document that would verify his divorce in order to marry his Turkish fiancée. The Turkish government has reported he was tortured and killed inside.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has publicly stated that the burden is on Saudi Arabia to prove that Khashoggi had indeed left the consulate alive as the Saudi's have claimed.

Donald Trump has many financial ties with Saudi Arabia. It was also the first country he visited as President. On Monday 15 October 2018, Donald Trump made a statement about Jamal Khashoggi's murder, saying maybe it was perpetrated by "Rouge Killers". Some have interpreted this as the President sending up a trial balloon for the Saudi's spin.

The image above shows Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince and First Deputy Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, in the Oval Office with President Trump during his visit on 14 March 2017.  From a body language perspective, one thing jumps out. Red lights flashing, sirens blaring. Anyone who has paid even casual attention to Donald Trump since he announced his candidacy, would notice his constant seated crotch display - wherein his legs are spread very wide. This is often colloquially referred to as Manspreading.

No one out-manspreads Donald Trump (well.... almost no one).

In this image, note how Mohammed bin Salman's manspreading (the angle of his legs, particularly his thighs) is considerably more pronounced than Trump's. This is of profound importance - for this is in the Oval Office. They're meeting on Donald Trump's home turf. And yet Mohammed bin Salman is displaying much more dominance and a considerably higher alpha emotional tone than the President.

It's important to point out that not only is Mohammed bin Salman's manspreading more extreme, but the President's is considerably less alpha than his typical seated display. To nuance this nonverbal even further, notice the angle of each man's feet - Trump's are pointed more straight ahead (beta), while Mohammed bin Salman's feet are pointed considerably more outwardly (higher alpha).

Since he's been President, Trump has not met in the Oval Office with any other leader, foreign or domestic while defaulting to this acquiescing configuration - only Mohammed bin Salman. Although retrospectively it may not surprise many people, astute observers may remember that shortly after the 2016 Presidential election, when Donald Trump met with President Obama in the Oval Office, he also assumed this beta role.

SUMMARY: Donald Trump feels a significant beta emotional tone when the presence of Mohammed bin Salman. The fact that he adopts this subordinate mindset while on his home soil, in the Oval Office, cannot be over-emphasized.

Body Language Analysis No. 4259: Vladimir Putin and Bashar al-Assad - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (Photo)

It's no secret that Bashar al-Assad is beholden to Vladimir Putin - and we don't need nonverbal skills to figure this out. Yet this image provides us an utterly classic display of the Syrian President's beta body language bowing to the Russian President's alpha status.

What's most obvious in this moment is the angle formed by Assad's legs - his entire legs are held almost straight, with his knees slightly closer together than his hips. His feet are also parallel (even slightly toed-in). He looks quite uncomfortable.

Now look at Vladimir's legs - his upper legs are angled outward. Even though he is 7 inches (17.8 cm) shorter than Assad, Putin's knees are about 50% further apart than his Syrian subordinate. His lower legs are angled even further apart - with Putin's feet about 2.5x further than Assad's. Moreover, his feet are not pointed straight, but splayed outward. Putin's seated crotch display ("manspreading") is an overt dominance display.

Bashar al-Assad's hands are configured in what is known as a Seated Fig-Leaf. In this context, such genital guarding is a profound display the low confidence and vulnerability he feels in Putin's presence. But former KGB officer's hands are not in protection-mode. Specifically, note that Putin's wrists are flexible and laid-back - while Assad's nervousness doesn't allow him this luxury.

Bashar's feeling of beta-ness is further exemplified by the position of his upper arms - for, along with his elbows, they are drawn in, touching his torso. He's not using his armrests - not even touching them. In contrast, President Putin's arms are relaxed. Unlike Assad, his right elbow is taking up much more space - leaning on his armrest.

Summary: Assad's nonverbal behavior is nervous, weak, and acquiescing - while Putin, the puppet-master, is relaxed, projecting his power.

Body Language Analysis No. 4163: Donald Trump and Xi Jinping - (Relatively) Beta and Alpha - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

In April 2017, President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping met at Mar-a-Lago.

In the image above, Trump is sitting - in what for him - is a very rare configuration. His right leg is crossing over his left knee/distal thigh in a "European Style". Although we can't see his right foot - from the angle of his leg, we know it's probably pointing at the Chinese President. In this context, such a foot angle projects respect and/or deference.

Note that President Xi has both feet flat on the floor. This body language transmits his greater levels of confidence and strength. The angle of his legs are also not excessively splayed. In addition, although his head/face are turned toward President Trump, President Xi's torso, hips, legs - and probably his feet - are pointed straight forward. This conveys relatively less respect of Xi toward Trump.

President Xi also is seated in his own chair - which gives him a significant advantage. The Chinese leader's personal space is protected - whereas President Trump is seated in a less protected - and more "public" space.

Contrast Trump's meeting with Xi vs. this second image from a 60 minutes interview (September 2015). Note how then-candidate Trump is sitting with legs very widely spread in an extreme example of a "Seated Crotch Display" (colloquially known as "Manspreading"). He's also leaning forward with his torso - and with his hands in a "Low Steeple" (Conventional Low Steeple). This is President Trump's primary default seated display - it's overly-dominant, aggressive, and not recommended.

Summary: President Trump's nonverbal behavior in the first image (with President Xi Jinping), although not beta in an absolute sense - is relatively beta when placed in dynamic context with Xi's alpha body language. Although he was on his home turf, Trump committed the tactical error of not planning ahead by not controlling the physical space of the meeting. In this moment, Xi is projecting more power and less respect toward Trump. Most notably, President Trump's deviation from his normal hyper-alpha seating position demonstrates Trump was considerably off his game with President Xi.

Body Language Analysis No. 3965: Manspreading, Madrid, and a Business Faux Pas - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Recently the city of Madrid has taken measures to limit "Manspreading" on public transportation. Manpreading is the colloquial term for the "Seated Crotch Display" wherein a person (almost always a man) sits with his legs spread wide - thus exposing his crotch. The feet are most frequently positioned sole-downward and the elbows are often protruding laterally in a "maximum space mode".

On a bus, subway, plane, or in other public areas - manspreading is done at the expense - often dramatically - of those seated adjacently.

In crowded public situations, we typically suspend our personal space (intimate space) norms which would never apply to other scenarios. For example, we may touch shoulders, elbows, and upper arms of those sitting next to us on a crowded airplane, because we have no choice and the idea of shared space takes over. But not everyone observes this in equal fashion.

Many men will often default into a manspreading configuration. And while it's certainly no excuse, some men will go a lifetime without realizing what they're doing makes those seated next to them emotionally (and physically) very uncomfortable.

Why do men do this? There are several reasons. In a public setting, the seated crotch display is a mode of asserting dominance - very much akin to young male gorillas beating on their chests. Manspreading in these crowed settings is a type of alpha/hyper-alpha, and often narcissistic behavior.

Men who are in straight, platonic relationships will often sit around a table in this manner. And provided they're relatively equal in the pecking order, men will also do this in a friendly professional/work setting.

Men who manspread frequently very likely have low empathy quotients.

Although most commonly exhibited by straight men, people of all sexual orientations will also sit in a seated crotch display fashion when sexually attracted to another person. In such cases they usually "crotch point" (and foot point) toward the desired individual.

A tremendous problem is created, however, when men use the seated crotch display in professional settings when women are present - or when a subordinate male sits in this manner in the presence of his superior (regardless of their gender). It's particularly common and extremely offensive in the case of male-female business settings. Many men won't ever realize just how often this, and similar actions, will evoke strong negative conditioned responses in women. This occurs to the point of creating other secondary problems, which on the surface don't seem to be related, yet will precipitate the killing of potential sales and negotiations. In such interactions, manspreading is very frequently accompanied by other alpha, hyper-alpha, and narcissistic verbal language, paralanguage, and body language behavior.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3775: Women Try 'Manspreading' For A Week - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The term "Manspreading" is a relatively recently coined colloquial for what, in more technical nonverbal terminology, is referred to as the "Seated Crotch Display". Manspreading usually describes, but is not limited to, relatively crowded public setting such as a subway, bus or airplane.

The seated crotch display is seen much more commonly in males for several reasons. The Shape of the human pelvis tends to favor a mildly larger angle of the thighs in men vs. women - although this is in no way explains the more extreme manspreading angles very commonly exampled by men. External genitalia is another reason for larger seated thigh angles with men - but again, only a mildly larger amount of thigh separation is necessary to accommodate this difference in anatomy.

When for example, several heterosexual men - who happen to be co-workers are seated around a table (if, say they're at lunch and exists good rapport and even friendship) - the vast majority of time, men will sit exhibiting a considerably wide-angle crotch display. This is very similar to a sub-troop of young, friendly chimpanzees or gorillas beating their chests while displaying dominance yet in the midst of playing. In this context, a seated crotch display is essentially a default normal setting in most men.

Intriguingly, during a business meeting, men will typically sit in a manspreading fashion in a (subconscious) effort to assert dominance - yet they'll be completely oblivious to the fact they're behaving offensively to their women co-workers.

Men (much more commonly than women) will also subconsciously sit in a seated crotch display when they are sexually attracted to someone in the immediate vicinity - or when they are feeling sexual while on camera, on stage, etc. Thus in these contexts, a seated crotch display serves as a subconscious signal of sexual readiness and for a potential partner to reciprocate advances - e.g., "I'm giving you a green light, please proceed in kind."

Women will tend to sit with their legs closer together because they have been strongly socialized and taught very specifically to do so - with at least one objective being the avoidance or at least minimization of any unwanted advances from men. Also, because the vast majority of human cultures are highly patriarchal - most societies consider the act of a seated crotch display in a girl or woman to be very "unladylike". Unfortunately, as one of the participants in this video said (beginning at 2:22), "Women are expected to be small, quiet and almost invisible - whereas men can be these boisterous slobs and it's all good." Such misogynistic beliefs certainly contribute to the gender disparity of this particular body language display.

High vs. low confidence levels (and Alpha vs. Beta personalities) also contribute to manspreading (or not). When we feel less confident we all tend to sit with our thighs a smaller angle and when we're feeling more confident this angle tends to increase. This dynamic is more obvious with men because of the extremes in leg position during times of confidence is high. Of course, there are many other nonverbal displays signaling relative confidence levels - this is but one.

Autism Spectrum Disorders occur at a significantly higher rate in men - thus a portion of those who manspread have this as a reason for their diminished sensitivity to the importance of others' personal (intimate) space.

A significant share of those who sit in a manspreading fashion can be classified as having Narcissistic Personality Disorder. They have relatively low (or perhaps nonexistent) empathy quotients - and therefore not only just don't care about the people sitting next to them, but they want to deliberately invade another person's personal and intimate spaces.

Summary: While Manspreading (aka Seated Crotch Display) is a behavior with many contributing factors - we would all be well-advised to dial up our empathy when seated in crowded areas.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3664: Benjamin Netanyahu, Viktor Yanukovych and Vladimir Putin - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

These two images demonstrate a stark contrast between a man who is beholden and another who is not.

The image above was taken shortly after Viktor Yanukovych was removed from power as the President of Ukraine. He then fled to Russia where this image was taken shortly thereafter. From a body language perspective note the angle of Yanukovych's upper legs and the relative distance between his knees and compare these to Vladimir Putin's. Moreover notice the toe-in configuration (aka pigeon-toe) of Mr. Yanukovych versus the relatively wide-splayed angle of Mr. Putin's feet.

Now compare these nonverbal clusters to the image below where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is meeting with President Putin - also on Russian Soil. Although the angle of Mr. Putin's thighs are also wider than Netanyahu's, the disparity between the two men is not nearly as dramatic as the above scenario. Notice as well the angle of Mr. Netanyahu's feet - for they are not toed-in as are Mr. Yanukovych's.

Summary: While there are other nonverbal signals being displayed in these images, we can say conclusively thatViktor Yanukovych's emotional tone is beta and submissive to Vladimir Putin. Mr. Yanukovych acquiesces to what he views as Mr. Putin's relative alpha status by the manner in which he's sitting. Benjamin Netanyahu however, does not concede status to President Putin and views himself to be Putin's equal. Yanukovych is projecting a low emotional comfort and lower confidence while Netanyahu is emotionally comfortable and of higher confidence.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3531: Helen Mirren, Subways, Sincerity, Empathy and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Helen Mirren is a fantastic actress. Yet when she's just being herself (not "in character" or without help from a director - or having the advantage of multiple takes) - she's no better at projecting false feelings than most anyone else. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of the above video.

Early in this video, when Jimmy Fallon holds up this image of Ms. Mirren riding on the NYC Subway, Helen points out the man next to him is

"Manspreading". This is a recent colloquial term for a "Seated Crotch Display". In crowed settings, such as a subway, this body language is very likely be a signal of narcissism. However depending on the context and the other nonverbals with which it is cluster, it can signal quite different emotional tones. Be warned against interpreting any body language in isolation.

When Ms. Mirren and Mr. Fallon point out members of The Roots (Mark Kelley, left and Kirk Douglas, right) configured in seated crotch displays - they are wrong to group this behavior with the same meaning as sitting next to someone in a subway, a plane, etc.

Here each man is playing an instrument (mechanically, this requires differences compared with sitting/resting/riding passively in a subway - and their comfort is crucial to make music), it's a dramatically different context (vs. a subway), playing an instrument (particularly on national TV) is a considerably alpha behavior - and the men are sitting much further apart (thus not encroaching on each others personal or intimate space). So while this is an alpha display (and also very helpful in playing the guitar or bass) - the band members sitting in this manner and in this context is not indicative of Narcissism.

When Helen Mirren begins to tell her story, she wraps both hands around her lower torso (1:58) and abdomen in a self-hugging MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier). This is one type of self-soothing nonverbal very commonly seen associated with anxiety and lower levels of emotional comfort.

During 2:07 we see Ms. Mirren display an elevated Central Forehead Contraction (CFC) with components of a mouth frown. In addition her palms are directed upwards (oblique) with open fingers. This nonverbal cluster is highly congruent with her verbal messaging as well as her paralanguage - thus revealing this to be a high sincerity quotient moment.

This image captured during 3:21 - with both palms to her face indicates elevated anxiety, with high levels of both empathy and sincerity. People with low empathy almost never use this nonverbal illustrator.

3:33

This head down, face covered posture although similar to the moment above, has the additional emotional meanings of

shame and embarrassment.

Hands held to the face as shown in these two moments is also indicative of the emotional brain attempting to process what the logical brain already knows.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3326: Donald Trump on 60 Minutes - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last Sunday on 60 Minutes Scott Pelley interviewed Donald Trump. Mr. Pelley asked Mr. Trump about the anti-Muslim comments and a question by an audience member - and why Trump "let that pass". During Trump's explanation he adopted the body language shown in the first image below (captured during 0:59).

Ignoring Mr. Trump's face for a moment, we can see three very clear nonverbal signals which are alpha to hyper-alpha in nature.

Leaning forward toward Pelley with his back away from the chair - taken in isolation - shows mental engagement, concentration and assertiveness. Too few politicians adopt a leaning forward posture - rather they sit back and cross their legs during very crucial discussions (projecting emotional dissonance, aloofness and a feigned relax mindset). This component of Trump's body language is alpha and recommended.

Upon further evaluation though, we notice how far Mr. Trump's legs are spread very far apart. This is a fairly extreme example of what is termed "Man-Spreading" or the "Seated Crotch Display". Almost exclusively displayed by men, this nonverbal is hyper-alpha in amplitude and projects dominance or, with other co-existing signals (not present here) sexual attraction. While no one should want a shrinking violet or beta personality for their president (or similarly frequent acquiescing body language), the vast majority of the time such man-spreading is strongly discouraged.

Additionally Trump's hands are adopting a conventional steeple position (more specifically, a low, conventional steeple). This is also a hyper-alpha nonverbal. And as with most alpha displays - most people who use them - end up over using them. The projection of arrogance and condescending emotions are especially strong.

Donald Trump's body language is always "screaming". Said another way, he uses so many alpha signals and on such a constant basis (including of course his face which is discussed some below) - that his nonverbal signals are truly yelling at the audience. This constant hyper-alpha behavior is very polarizing - thus people who like him will be galvanized with him and those in middle and the left will be repelled (as with any politician).

Trump's nonverbal behavior is highly congruent with his polarizing words and statements. A very telling paralanguage phenomenon is exemplified here when Trump says, "... the Muslims ..." (rather than simply "Muslims"). He has also has said on multiple occasions, "... the Blacks ..." and "... the Hispanics ...". The use of the word "the" prior to another group, ethnicity, religion, etc. is an extremely classic paralanguage tell of distancing behavior and prejudice. And although the image immediately below is blurry, the instant Trump begins the word "Muslim" (at 1:11 when he says, "... I love the Muslims ...") he shows a clear microexpression of contempt. Donald Trump is telling a blatant lie (This should remind anyone who has studied history of Pre-WWII Nazi propaganda - e.g. "The Jews").

A second later (during 1:12, captured below) as Trump says, "... I have many, many friends - people living in this building - Muslims ... " - yet his facial expression tells us he feels both anger and contempt toward people who are also Muslim.

Below he continues, "... they're phenomenal people ...." (1:15) - where he displays a combination of both anger and disgust. Again, this nonverbal cluster display betrays Trump's true emotions.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3045: How Vladimir Sits - Body Language Tells (PHOTOS)

Vladimir Putin often sits with his legs widely splayed - particularly when sitting with other heads-of-state, and these recent meetings with Barack Obama and David Cameron are no exception. In body language parlance this is known as the "Seated Crotch Display".

Men will often sit in this manner for two primary reasons: sexual attraction (which of course is NOT applicable here) and to assert their dominance. Mr. Putin is very interested in projecting his alpha qualities - and the seated crotch display is one of many nonverbal modes of sending signals of such hyper-assertiveness.

Many men make the huge mistake of sitting in this configuration around women in a business context. And while the vast majority of them are unaware of it, in such a setting this body language is offensive.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2430:
Dolph Lundgren is an Alpha Male and
He Wants Everyone to Know It -
Seated Crotch Display
(Video, Photo)

In the video featured above, Dolph Lundgren is shown in the "Seated Crotch Display" configuration. This nonverbal is an alpha body language display and is seen almost exclusively in men. Male co-workers, friends or adversaries will often sit around a table in this manner (legs very widely splayed) in what is one type of a subconscious display of relative dominance. When in a professional setting of mixed company, men who use the seated crotch display will lose rapport and very often offend women (and most men are completely unaware of this turn-off).

Depending on the other nonverbals with which it is clustered, the seated crotch display (SCD) can also be a sign of sexual interest and/or sexual display in both men and women (Think of a male peacock, ruffed grouse, etc.) Although a considerably less common body language of females - when the SCD is used by women, it is much more indicative of sexual interest as opposed to a dominance display.

Tom Cruise, Gerard Butler & Olga Kurylenko on
The Graham Norton Show
Alpha Body Language Behavior -
on The Phone and on the Couch
(Video) (Pictures)

Tom Cruise was recently on the Graham Norton along with the Olga Kurylenko to promote his recent movie, "Oblivion". Gerard Butler was pitching his as well - "Olympus has Fallen". As are most talk shows, this was full of great examples of nonverbal behavior. Some of these are described below.

When speaking on a mobile phone, the further the elbow goes out - the higher our internal alpha emotional tone. For the vast majority of time (>99%) the vast majority of people will speak with their elbows close to the side of their torso (see below). Whenever our subconscious feels the need to "dial up our alpha" or we're feeling a need to increase our dominance, the elbow elevates out to the side further. Say you heard you just got a raise, just got a date with Olga Kurylenko or if you have to reprimand a subordinate - your elbow will often elevate out to the side. Here Tom Cruise is speaking to audience member's family on the Graham Norton - and very much in the spotlight - so he is feeling the need to elevate his alpha and his arm & elbow follows. This nonverbal is much more common in men and is indeed relatively rare in women. In this example Cruise's arm is at about a 45 or 50 degree angle to the side of his body. When displayed at "full sail" the arm is elevated higher and parallel with the floor (thus 90 degrees to the side of the torso) or sometimes even higher. An interesting detail that goes along with this - is the position of the index finger (forefinger). The index finger is held alone on the back of the phone with the thumb and the remaining fingers on the sides of the phone (see below).

If a person speaks constantly (or nearly so) with their elbow out and arm raised (especially in public and in relatively crowded areas), this is a sign of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (although certainly not the only one). Again, we ALL display this nonverbal once in a while.

Here Gerard Butler's arm is only slightly elevated. This configuration (or even with less arm elevation) is much more typical. Note the position of Gerard's fingers too - they're all on the same side of the phone with his thumb on the opposite side - unlike Mr. Cruise's alpha forefinger position. Therefor both his elbow and his fingers signify significantly less alpha (less ego) and more beta behavior present in this moment. This is similar to the way most of us hold our phones the vast majority of the time.

In this image Tom Cruise's legs are widely splayed in a configuration known as the "Seated Crotch Display". This is another alpha nonverbal and although it is also much more common in men, occasionally women will use this body language as well. In some settings and depending on the other nonverbals with which it is clustered, the seated crotch display signals sexual attraction. Men will sit in such a manner around women all too often and particularly in a business setting it routinely offends female clients/colleagues. Also on the first date it will come off as overbearing - and most women will read it like a neon sign.
