Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3860: Ian McKellen, The Oscars and a spot-on Maggie Smith Impression - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During his recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Sir Ian McKellen recounted a story involving Dame Maggie Smith at the 2002 Oscars. That year, he had been nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Gandalf in the 2001 film, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

As Norton was asking - and McKellan was anticipating his question (seen during the 0:09 - 0:10 portion of the video), the actor displayed a particular facial expression known as a "Lateral Lip Purse". Although extremely common, it's very rarely discussed in the nonverbal literature.

It's crucial to note that the remainder of his face is relaxed and neutral. For if there are other nonverbal signals accompanying the lateral lip purse - especially involving the eyes/eyelids - it has an entirely different meaning.

Moreover, be careful not to confuse this with a "Forward Lip Purse" (as the name suggests, with the lips protruding forward, rather to one side) - as it too projects a very distinctive and different set of thought-emotions.

This example of a lateral lip purse is quite classic, however, the camera angle does not afford an optimal view. If McKellan were looking straight at the camera it would have been better for teaching purposes - yet after careful observation one can discern his lips are vectored strongly to his right.

A lateral lip purse (with the remainder of the face neutral) is a signal of open, non-secretive decision making. The easiest place to see this expression is at a restaurant - while the patrons are perusing their menus'.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3439: Ted Cruz and the Lateral Lip Purse - Body Language (PHOTOS)

This image of Ted Cruz was captured on 16 January 2016 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at a Tea Party event. Senator Cruz's facial expression in this moment is displaying what is known as a "Lateral Lip Purse". It's crucial to not confuse this with a "Forward Lip Purse". Although there are nonverbal modifiers which, if coexisting, will alter its meaning, when the rest of the face is neutrally configured, the lateral lip purse is indicative of an, open (non-secretive) decision making thought-emotion.

This particular expression is very prevalent in restaurants as people peruse their menus'.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3415: David Beckham, John Boyega, Star Wars, Lightsabers and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

David Beckham, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Kylie Minogue and Carrie Fisher were all guests last week on The Graham Norton Show.

When Beckham and Boyega briefly squared off with lightsabers, it led to Beckham displaying an evanescent facial expression - one that is very often misinterpreted or simply not even seen.

During 1:01 - 1:02, David Beckham is show with a "Lateral Lip Purse". A lateral lip purse is a signal of an open, non-secretive decision-making thought process. It's important to never confuse this with a forward lip purse, (which has a strong element of clandestine decision-making).

If you want to see a lateral lip purse - the next time you're at a restaurant, pay attention to others perusing their menus'.

This lateral lip purse (during 1:01 and to Beckham's left) is somewhat difficult to see because of the camera angle.

Close-up of above screen capture.

Mr. Beckham was very probably briefly considering precisely how to show his athletic prowess - but decided against it.

Nonverbal Communication No. 3201: Nazi War Criminal Oskar Gröning - Dissecting Body Language in Court (PHOTO)

Oskar Gröning is currently in the midst of a trial for war crimes. He was a former Nazi and SS junior squad leader at Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. Please read further about his background - yet not until you've evaluated the photo for its nonverbal behavior content - what follows is this analysis.

Asymmetric Forehead: At first glance we see that Gröning's left forehead is contracted - but upon a more careful inspection - and comparison with multiple crossed-referenced images - we see it's the his right side of face (including his forehead) that has suffered a facial nerve (peripheral cranial nerve VII) palsy. Thus his left side is not contracted so much as the right side of his face is considerably hypo-functional. This asymmetry gives the false-appearance of a nonverbal signal of disbelief. Can you name any politicians who have this same phenomenon - and therefore are chronically projecting incredulity (and losing votes with their electorates and influence with their colleagues)?

Lateral Lip Purse: This facial configuration displays an open (non-secretive) choice contemplation. This is usually expressing a dichotomous thought-process (e.g., Should I choose A or B? Is he right or wrong?, etc.).

Elevated Central Forehead Contraction (along with inner eyebrows): - This indicates emotional pain or physical pain experience directly for oneself - or for another via empathy. It's extremely important that these interpretations must have congruent mouth expressions - with this in mind, is Gröning's mouth consistent with his central forehead display and any of these types of pain? If you believe the allegations of WWII Nazi war crimes, does this change the way you interpret this particular nonverbal signal cluster? Do sociopaths feel emotion pain for themselves? Do they feel it for others?

Eyes fixated on a person without a corresponding head-turn/rotation: We do not tend to fully turn towards something/someone that/whom we do not like, do not respect or do not believe.

This particular hand configuration clustered with the other nonverbal signs indicates a critical evaluation.

In summary Oskar Gröning has evaluated someone/their testimony/statement/behavior, etc. during his trial for WWII war crimes, weighed what they had to say or do - and is in sharp disagreement with it or its ramifications/consequences. This brings him emotional pain (almost surely for himself, not for another person/persons).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3175: Box of Lies with Scarlett Johansson - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Always entertaining - AND a great laboratory for nonverbal communication - Jimmy Fallon's and his "Box of Lies" - recently showcased his deceptive ability against the very talented Scarlett Johansson. What follows is a partial body language analysis.

2:14

Unilateral Eyebrow and forehead elevation

This nonverbal sign telegraphs that Fallon does not believe Johansson. While not the only indicator of incredulity, it is often quite subtle and commonly presents in a microexpression or near-microexpression.

3:14

Lateral Lip Purse

A highly under-appreciated body language sign, the lateral lip purse tells us that Honest Consideration is taking place (e.g., "What should I choose, A or B?" - with no deception).

What facial, nonverbal modifier of the lateral lip purse completely changes its meaning?

6:45

Self-Righteous Head Wiggle (This body language cannot be appreciated in a still photo, please watch the video to view the dynamics of this nonverbal).

The Self-Righteous Head Wiggle (SRHW) is a high frequency (subtle in this example), side-to-side movement of the head (often accompanied by similar jaw and torso movements) indicative of High Confidence and Alpha Emotional Tones.

7:09

What nonverbal signals does Jimmy Fallon display in this moment (as well as just after & just prior) which tell us that he's figured out Scarlett Johansson's deception - AND (like a good host) makes the decision to lose this round?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2900: Lionel Messi and the Lateral Lip Purse - Body Language Tells (PHOTOS)

Captain of the 2014 Argentine Football Team as well as a forward for FC Barcelona, Lionel Messi is shown here in an often misunderstood nonverbal display - that of the "Lateral Lip Purse".

A lateral lip purse is a sign of an open decision making process. In distinction to the forward lip purse - (which has a clandestine nature to it) - when the lips are pursed to one side, it conveys an honest, open and non-secretive emotional tone. A lateral lip purse is very commonly seen in a grocery store when a person is deciding between two brands or flavors.

An additional component to Messi's expression here is seen in the configuration of his eyebrows - as they are drawn together and lowered. Lionel is a few seconds (or less) into his negative judgment of what he sees is transpiring - and what he BELIEVES should have occurred. He is still open about this judgement however - which is a very significant distinction.

If someone disagrees with you, very often their words will be in agreement. Can you tell the difference? What other signs of open vs. clandestine disagreement can you name?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2837: Of Spelling Bees, Alpha Posture, Decision Making and Visualizing - Body Language Tells (PHOTOS)

Jennifer Tenant of Hollywood, Maryland was in the 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee last week along with many other students. There were two winners this year - Sriram Hathwar and Ansun Sujoe (the last time this occurred was 1962). In this image of Ms. Tenant from the second round there are several classic body language tells.

One obvious signal is her "Fingers Forward Arms Akimbo" (aka Thumbs Backward Arms Akimbo). This is a common alpha signal and can also indicate a confident readiness. Her elbows vectored even more forward than typical here is a nonverbal modifier which dials-up her alpha display even further. Ms. Tenant feels very confident in her ability to spell the word correctly. What does Fingers Backward Arms Akimbo indicate?

Note also her slight mouth asymmetry with her lips pushed subtly to her left (with accompanying chin dimpling). This nonverbal sign is an example of a "Lateral Lip Purse" indicating open (non-clandestine) decision making (Don't confuse this with a Forward Lip Purse).

In addition, this spelling bee participant is "Looking Up to her Right". This is a very common (~95% of right hand dominant individuals) field of gaze momentarily looked to when visually constructing something in the mind's eye. This could something in the future, events of past not witnessed - or as she is here she - constructing a word.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2321:
Cardinal Timothy Dolan on "Face the Nation"
Problems in Catholic Church & Electing a New Pope
Clergy are Not Exempt from Body Language Tells ...

Father Timothy Dolan, a Cardinal in the Catholic Church (and the current Archbishop of New York) was interviewed today on "Face the Nation" with Bob Schieffer. Mr. Schieffer did a good job holding the Cardinal's feet to the fire. This interview is extremely full of body language - and it would take many pages to completely dissect it all - a few of the highlights follow.

A reminder: This website serves as an objective reference source for the science and art of Body Language/Nonverbal Communication. In an effort to be both practical and academic, many examples from/of varied cultures, politicians, professional athletes, legal cases, public figures, etc. are cited in order to teach and illustrate both the interpretation of others’ body language as well as the projection of one’s own nonverbal skills in many different contexts – not to advance any political or religious agenda.

Scheiffer: "Well there is also, ah, your Eminence, things like the cover-up of sexual, ah, crimes, pedophiles. You got the Cardinal from California, ah, who was accused of, ah, of not being candid about things out there on that front. Are we going to hear something about that because, I take your point about all of the points that you just made, I, I understand that - but what we read about and what we hear about are some of these very unsavory, ah, things that have come to light. How, how seriously do the cardinals take these things your Eminence?"

Dolan: "We have to take with the utmost seriousness, and we have to have a sense of contrition (microexpression of contempt on Dolan's left at 5:19), realism, ahhh, about, about confronting that (another microexpression of contempt, this one more prominent at 5:22). You're dead right. There's no ca..., there's no cardinal with ah, (another microexpression of contempt at 5:25) his head in the sand when it comes to these issues."

With respect to (some of the) paralanguage and statement analysis here, it is particularly telling that Dolan uses a double negative - "...there's no cardinal with ah, his head in the sand ...." rather than saying something such as "...we are fully aware..." or we're all cognizant of what's transpiring", etc. There are other statement analysis tells here as well. Can you spot them?

Microexpressions are very evanescent and subtle and thus are best appreciated by watching the video.

Dolan continues later, "...So it shouldn't, it shouldn't surprise us that the afflictions of the World, and you just named some of them -  sexual immorality, perversion, abuse of children - that affects all elements of society - are particularly hideous when it comes to The Church - and that that will be an issue? - I predict it will". During the last segment of this statement (5:46 - 5:47), Dolan displays the "Double okay sign". Emblems such as this one exemplified here, have different meaning in different cultures. Throughout most of North America and parts of Europe, holding the tip of one's index finger (forefinger) to the tip of the thumb (on the same hand) while making a circle or oval signifies "okay". In much of the Northern Mediterranean region, such as Greece, Italy and Vatican City (the smallest country in the World, landlocked within Rome) as well as Brazil, much of Russia and Turkey (other countries as well) - this same emblem indicates a sexual insult or an orifice. Just across the Mediterranean - in Tunisia (and in France and Belgium too) it means worthless or zero.

Cardinal Dolan should be very aware of any cultural variations of body language/gestures he is using - particularly this one - since a dramatic disproportion of the Catholic Cardinals are from Europe and Italy is represented more than any other country by far. He is surrounded by people who will take this body language derogatorily. Some politicians, most of them American, use the "okay sign" as a more friendly way of pointing (many often over-use it and thus appear insincere and its excessive use may be interpreted as patronizing). Initially it is learned and thus forced until it becomes habit - thus the subconscious slowly takes over the initiation and use of this political point. However, outside traditional politics, it is significantly rare to see this gesture used in this fashion. And although such political pointing is probably the context here, Cardinal Dolan's use of a nonverbal - in what in his native land indicates "okay" when he says, "...are particularly hideous when it comes to The Church..." is very significant.

After Cardinal Dolan says, "...I predict it will.", his lips take on the configuration of a forward pointing Lip Purse (at 5:52 mark, below). This contradicts his verbal prediction. Said another way, Dolan does not believe that sexual abuse scandal within the Church will be addressed in the next several days as part of picking a new pope. A forward lip purse is a highly reliable signal of clandestine disagreement - a significant disparity between what is spoken and what is emotionally being felt and thought.

Some other significant nonverbal signals:

When asked, "...Should priests be allowed to marry?" Cardinal Dolan bites his left lower lip (at 6:02) signaling significant anxiety.

When asked, "Should women be allowed to become priests?", The Archbishop of New York displays an inward lip roll (6:04 - 6:07) - significant of anxiety and the attempt to suppress a display of strong emotions - here (as evidenced by his clenched jaw and tightened "mustache area") the emotion he's suppressing is anger.

The double index finger (forefinger) point is seen at 6:46. This is a hyper-alpha, hyper dominant display. A single index finger point is a very negative gesture across virtually every culture on the planet. A double display is over-the-top. Politicians will use this (subconsciously) in front of politically friendly crowds to stir up their political base when they are running for office - however that is relatively unusual and ill-advised. Heads of state rarely use this. It shows cultural insensitivity - regardless of the country or region in question. And while we all - occasionally to rarely - use this negative gesture - we should not. When it's used often - it's highly consistent with narcissism.
